Smash atoms with Lego!

... or at least detect the debris of smashed particles with Lego: The LHC scientists do not yet have enough data to claim a discovery. But in the meantime, at home in Copenhagen, one physicist Sascha Mehlhase from the Niels Bohr Institute has made a part of the collider, the Atlas detector, out of LEGO toy bricks. »It took me about 48 hours to build the 3D model on my laptop and another 33 hours to actually put together all the pieces, this whole process spread out over several weeks,« explains Sascha. The model is made of 9,500 lego bricks and is about 1:50 in scale. There is no construction manual yet, but there will soon be one, he says on his website. The model is very intricate, even showing the innermost pixel detector. University Post article. Gallery of images.

What are the steps in processing uranium into fuel for reactors?

I am programming a realistic nuclear reactor program. just kinda to mess around with because this subject interests me greatly. i need to know in very detailed steps the processing of uranium ores into yellowcake then to UF6 ect. you get the idea. the whole process. i also need to know the machines and chemicals used in the process. and if you're dumb enough to think any information given to me in this question could be used to build a bomb; think again. i have neither the resources of a country to gather the uranium needed nor do i have 1000's of centrifuges to separate U238 and U235.

My chemistry textbook was right all along!

As reported in Physics World today, a team of Swiss and Dutch physicists have developed a novel tip for an atomic force microscope (AFM) using a single carbon monoxide molecule. The tip is stable enough to image individual atoms and bonds within molecules. The first image below is from the group's AFM of a single pentacene (C22H14) molecule on a copper (Cu(111)) substrate. The second picture shows the conventional chemical structure diagram (the vertices are carbon, and one hydrogen hangs off of each exterior corner), and the third is a "ball" model, with carbon atoms in black and hydrogen in white. As discussed in the article, the whole molecule is just 1.4 nm long, with a spacing of 0.14 nm between adjacent carbon atoms. The paper is out in today's Science, but it's pay-per-view.

Quantum random-walk puts single atom into observable superposition of states

Http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/39802Single atoms have been spotted doing the quantum version of the random walk by physicists in Germany. This sighting of a "quantum walk" could help in the design of quantum search algorithms, or in the understanding of the transition from the quantum, microscopic world to the classical, macroscopic world.Update 15 July 2009: The actual paper appears in this week's Science (pay-per-view, unfortunately). Here's a nice diagram from the article, contrasting (left) the quantum superposition with (right) one of the classicial random walks. The histograms below show their actual measurements in the two situations.

do you think we could produce energy with a crystal by using knowledge of atoms and compounds and reactions???

I remmember seeing something on T.V. about an ancient civilization using crystals to power thier technology which happened to be very advanced (maybe atlantis?). i was wondering if it would be possible by studying reactions of atoms and molecules withing crystals to find one that if large enough could power something such as a levitaion device (perhaps create a crystal using certain compounds and manipulating atoms and molecules.) perhaps study the reaction of humans and crystals (we conduct arua and other things) i dunno. i wanted to see what other minds would think of how crystals could conduct energy to power a certain technology. please don't worry about critisism and let your mind flow free.

DIY scanning tunnelling microscope

I caught this on the MAKE blog; the full article is at ChemHacker. Sacha De'Angeli has announced the release of "version 0.1" (proof of concept) for a do-it-yourself scanning tunnelling microscope. If you already know what an STM is, my work here is done. For the rest of you, a scanning tunnelling microscope moves a very fine ("single atom sharp") tip across a surface.Electrons can jump between the surface and tip, leading to a varying electric current which can be amplified and measured. How well the electrons can jump depends exponentially on the width of the gap. Near an atom is closer than between atoms, so by moving the tip in very small (nanometer) increments, you can image the atomic structure of the surface. With a less sharp tip, or coarser position control, you can still image surface structure, steps, defects, etc. UPDATE: Instructables user Fabio M had posted a different STM project last December.

What is the cause of gravity?

A friend of mine MUSAB said that  two bodies attract each other because the electrons and protons of both their atoms attract each other, however, I don't think this is the case, I have heard from some where else that it is due to distortion in space time created by a mass and geodesics are formed and they bend towards the center of the mass due to which every other body which comes in its gravitational field tends to move towards its center and all that stuff I have studied in detail. So who is right? If he is wrong, then please also specify where is he wrong, I think that individual atoms can not attract each other because of charge because an atom, as a whole, is a neutral particle. Thanks in advance.

Interesting article from the BBC website :- A particle accelerator in the US has shown compelling hints of a never-before-seen particle, researchers say.  The find must be more fully confirmed, but researchers at the Tevatron are racing to work through existing data.  If proved, it will be a completely new, unanticipated particle; researchers say it cannot be the much sought-after Higgs boson.  It could also signal a new fundamental force of nature, and the most radical change in physics for decades. POWERING ATOMIC REACTOR CLOCKS:LASER SOLAR PANELS:USE LASER LIGHT NOT SUN

USING LASER SOLAR PANELS(NOT SUN LIGHT LASER LIGHT) INSIDE ATOMIC REACTOR COULD MAKE REACTOR FIRE SAFETY WITH USING FIBER OPTICS THAT HOLD LIGHT ENERGY TO TRANSFER ENERGY IN AND OUT OF ANY ATOMIC CLOCK: FIBER OPTICS CAN MOVE LIGHT THROUGH ANY BEND OR SMALL TO REACH PLACES AND THEN TRANSFER ITS LIGHT TO ENERGY WITH THE FOLLOWING IDEA. BY SHINING LASERS ON SOLAR PANELS THAT ARE INSIDE ATOMIC AREA DEVICES TO GIVE THE PANELS ELECTRICITY FOR REACTOR CLOCK AND REPLACING ALL DANGEROUS WIRES THAT SEND ELECTRICITY TO ATOMIC PARTS OF NUCLEAR PLANT. WITH NEW FIBEROPTIC WIRES TO SEND PHOTOVOLTAIC WIRES THAT SEND ELECTRICITY WITH LASER LIGHT. VERY SAFE COMPARED TO WIRES THAT WHEN CUT MAKE SPARKS OR FIRE. FIBEROPTIC WIRES ARE SAFE IF CUT ONLY NON DANGEROUS LIGHT WILL BE LOST. AND COULD REDUCE RADIATION FROM CROSSTALK THAT COME FROM REGULAR COPPER WIRES. One more idea can you charge a solar panel battery recharger by shinning laser beam on the solar panel cells in places were there is no sun light using laser light which can charge a device from a range of up to a football field if needed. This might be used in caves or evenin drilling for in off shore oil rigs were there really is no light in deeper water. And all other light sources of light would be distortedby reflection from the water. Only a laser beam could recharge aelectronic device by using photovoltaic in deep water where sundon't shine and only a laser will not have all of its light reflectedbecause of the water's reflection property, you would only be able touse laser light properties has less water reflection than normal light. BY HUME SCIENCE INTERNSHIP FIBER OPTICS TO SEND LIGHT INSIDE ANY TYPE OF ATOMIC AREA AND CONVERT IT ONCE INSIDE CORE INTO ELECTRIC POWER AND SAFELY DECREASING RADIATION PROBLEMS. THIS IS GOOD BECAUSE LESS COPPER WIRES ARE NEEDED.(ONLY LIGHT WOULD BE TRANSFERED IN CASE OF WIRE IS CUT ONLY LIGHT WILL ESCAPE MUCH LESS DANGER. USING FIBER OPTICS TO SEND LIGHT ENERGY ONTO SOLAR CELLS INSIDE REACTOR/THIS IS A GOOD SAFETY TOOL BECAUSE IF FIBER OPTICS ARE CUT ONLY LIGHT WILL BE EXPOSED AND NOT DANGEROUS ELECTRICITY WHICH WILL CAUSE RADIATION PROBLEMS. TO SEND ELECTRICITY INSIDE THROUGH OUT REACTOR//: INSIDE ATOMIC RADIATION AREAS. THERE ARE NO NEED FOR ELECTRIC WIRES. IF ELECTRICITY IS MADE INSIDE REACTOR CORE, BY SHINING INFARED ON SOLAR CELLS OBJECT NOT SUN LIGHT ONLY INFARED LIGHT ON THEM PANELS. THIS LIGHT HAS TO BE LASER OR INFARED BECAUSE IT CAN BE CONTROLLED USING INFARED LIGHT THIS ALLOWS IT TO BE MORE CENTERED THAN SUN LIGHT CAN. REDUCING ATOMIC RADIATION IN ATOMIC REACTOR CLOCKS. AND NOT USING WIRES. A ATOMIC REACTORS CORE CLOCK HAS TO GET ELECTRICITY. THIS CAN BE DONE WITH SOLAR PANEL CELLS PLACED AND CONNECTED TO THE CORE'S CLOCK. THEN BY SHINING LASER LIGHT OR INFARED LIGHT ON SOLAR PANELS THAT ARE INSIDE THE CORE CAN GIVE AND GET THE LIGHT ENERGY POWER IT NEEDS TO RUN TRANSISTERS AND COMPUTER CHIPS. FROM SOLAR PANELS THAT ARE CONNECTED TO THE CLOCK INSIDE THE CORE. AND ARE BEING GENERATED BY CONTROLLED LASERS THAT ARE ALLOWED TO BE AT VARIABLE DISTANCES. CAN ELECTRICAL ENERGY BE TRANSPORTED BY A LASER. SURE JUST SHINE IT ON THE SOLAR PANEL AT NIGHT AND YOU WILL GET A LITTLE ENERGY, SURE IT WORKS. CAN A ATOMIC REACTOR GET ITS ENERGY VIA LASER LIGHT INSTEAD OF WIRES DOING THE TRICK. NOW WITH LASER OR FIBER OPTICS. WIRELESS ELECTRICITY CAN BE SENT WITHOUT WIRES.ELECTRICAL WIRES COULD BE THE PRODUCER OF STATIC RADIATION. WIRES DO SEND ENERGY INSIDE THE CORE AND GIVES ENERGY FOR THE CORE'S REACTOR. CAN THIS IS ALL DONE WITH NO WIRES INSIDE THE CORE; IF WE ALLOW ENERGY TO BE SENT VIA LASER LIGHT TO A CONVERTER OF SOLAR PANELS COULD CREATE ELECTRICITY IF THOSE SOLAR PANELS WERE DIRECTLY SHINED ON TO BY LASERS. A GREAT DEAL OF WIRES COULD NOT BE NEEDED. SENDING POWER TO CORES WATCH OR CIRCUITS IS POSSIBLE. BY SHINING A CONTROLLED LASER ON THE INSIDE OF A CORE'S SOLAR PANEL CAN BE ACHIEVED BY FEEDING THE SOLAR CELLS INSIDE THE REACTOR WITH LASER PHOTO ENERGY LASERS WOULD SIMPLY SHINE ON INTERIOR REACTOR SOLAR CELL COMPONENTS. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS INSTEAD OF SUN LIGHT CREATING THE ENERGY IT WILL BE A HIGH POWERED LASER SHINING ON THE PANEL SOLAR CELLS. USE LASER LIGHT WHICH IS MORE DIRECT AND IS MORE FOCUSED OVER A LONG DISTANCE. LESS RADIATION AND LESS WIRE WASTE IS THE FINAL RESULT. HAVE A GOOD CLEAN DAY. THIS IS A NEW FORM OF TRANSFERING ELECTRICITY TO EXTERNAL LOCATION. USING FIBER OPTIC LIGHT AND SENDING IT AND THEN RECIEVING IT ACROSS A DISTANCE WITHOUT WIRES. THIS SEEMS SAFER TO ME BY USING THIS METHOD. REMEMBER THIS; WE ARE NOT USING SUN LIGHT IN ANY OF THESE METHODS ONLY LASERS OR FIBER OPTICS. THIS IS INFORMATION FROM A SCHOOL PROJECT OF MINE AND IF YOU CAN GIVE MORE ON THIS SUBJECT PLEASE DO. PLACING SOLAR PANELS INSIDE BUILDINGS NOT JUST OUTSIDE, AND CAPTURING OFFICE LIGHT 24 HRS MORE PROJECTS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO EXPERIMENT A INTERNSHIP WITH! PLACING SOLAR PANELS INSIDE BUILDINGS NOT JUST OUTSIDE, AND CAPTURING OFFICE LIGHT 24 HRS

Does 1.01 grams of hydrogen have a mass equal to 12 grams of carbon?

Hydrogen has a molar mass of 1.01g/mol . A mole is defined as the amount of substance that contains as many entities as exactly 12g of carbon-12. Carbon has a molar mass of 12.01 g/mol. Also: In my textbook it states that "1.01 grams of hydrogen contain 6.02214199 X 10^23 atoms of hydrogen." Does this mean that 12 grams of carbon contain 6.02214199 X 10^23 atoms of carbon?

Ionized air principles? Answered

I've looked throughout the internet, but I still haven't been able to figure out this one When air conducts electricity, say when lightning strikes, the electrical field breaks down air molecules... So, it breaks the intramolecular bonds between gas atoms in nitrogen molecules, oxygen molecules, etc. The atoms are then ionised. But then somewhere, I got the information that ionised air contains BOTH positive AND negative ions. How is this possible if the gases are non-metal elements and only form negative ions?? When an electrical current does flow, what carries the charge? The negative air ions? or electrons?  I've found sites that say one, and sites that say another. Thanks in advance

Free Energy... NOT From Saltwater!

This one's for Kiteman. Right after an independent cancer cure researcher in Ohio discovers that he can make saltwater burn, we get a story from the UK about a water heater with an efficiency of 250%-300%.The device seems to break the fundamental physical law that energy cannot be created from nothing - but researchers believe it taps into a previously unrecognised source of energy, stored at a sub-atomic level within the hydrogen atoms in water. The system - developed by scientists at a firm called Ecowatts in a nondescript laboratory on an industrial estate at Lancing, West Sussex - involves passing an electrical current through a mixture of water, potassium carbonate (otherwise known as potash) and a secret liquid catalyst, based on chrome. full story

A new (and potentially real) way to produce hydrogen from water

A report in Science News today describes the results of an extremely detailed molecular simulation (full non-relativistic quantum mechanics) which shows how small clusters of (less than two dozen!) aluminum atoms can catalyze the dissociation of water into hydrogen with very high efficiency.  The paper has apparently been accepted by Physical Review Letters, but there's nothing up on arXiv :-( Before the alternative-energy fringe starts jumping up and down, the big roadblock to this mechanism is how to fabricate and distribute aluminum atomic clusters (called "superatoms" in the report; sigh...).  Making "nanoscale" (another annoying word...) clusters of atoms usually involves high temperatures and vacuum systems.   Together, those will consume substantially more energy than you recover from making and burning the hydrogen. However, if that roadblock can be overcome, then this does become a viable technology for fuel cells:  fill a tank with water, pour in a pouch (or bucket) of aluminum clusters (magic pixie dust :-), and hydrogen starts bubbling out.  It will be interesting to see how this shakes out Oh, and the simulation makes cool pictures, too!
