I've been thinking for a bit, and I have some questions on magnetism. Question 1: Is molten metal magnetic? If you place a magnet over a molten metal like iron for example, will it be attracted to the magnet? Question 2: If diamagnetism can be used to repel water, can you use nagnets to slow down or even stop the speed of drainage if the magnet is strong enough? That is all. Thank you.

Everyone hates the bugs that gather around lamps and other lights. Everyone loves LEDs. Apparently LED light bulbs don't attract the bugs the same way as incandescent and fluorescent bulbs do, as they don't put out UV light.Check it out:http://energycircle.com/blog/2009/06/16/newsflash-leds-dont-attract-bugs/

I'm looking to make a "floating" model by insetting NdFeB rare-earth magnets with same poles facing so they repel. Now, magnet selling places specify the "pull" a magnet might have, say 1.2kg. What I would like to know is if the repel is equal in magnitude as the pull if two similar magnets are placed with same poles facing, is the force exerted 1.2kg and so I could float 1.2kg of stuff? Also, does stacking magnets double the attractive or repelling force, i.e. do two 1.2kg magnets stuck together lift 2.4kg of stuff, negating the small difference in distance of one magnet from the object? Is there a way to calculate the distance between two opposing magnets with a force applied. Does it follow the inverse cube rule? And if the stacking does work, do I also need an equal number of magnets on the other side for repelling, i.e. a stack of two 1.2kg magnets repels 2.4kg with one 1.2kg on the other side, or not? Does the magnet on the other side have to be the same force? Lots of questions but hoping someone can shed some light on this as I've not been able to find anything about it :-(

I live in city usually (not my house), but on holidays in my village (something like mountain). I readed a lot off books at home about animals, and i love animals. I like to watch them, play with them, take photo of them...) and because i am living in village with my old parents both more than 60 years :P and my brother I cant play with anyone expect animals. My brother is lazy and just plays some games like CS and Tetris on laptop and doesn't like experiments and animals. I am 16 years old. I have seen lot off animals in my mini forest at my property and at forest near my property lot off animals like: birds, bats, frogs, bugs and i rarely i have seen: rabbit, wolf, wild pig, squirrel... So how to attract and catch any animal easy with 100% success without buying any trap expect buying something really cheap under 3$ or using something found in forest? (BUT SOMETHING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE SO THAT MY FATHER WONT RECOGNIZE TRAP, I WANT TO CATCH ANY ANIMAL EXPECT BUGS, SPIDERS, FROGS).AT LEAST A BIRD EVEN IN WINTER HOW TO CATCH? I DONT WANT THE TRAP SEEN BY MY FATHER NOT BIGGER THAN BALL. I WILL NOT HURT BIRDS BUT JUST WANT TO PICTURE WITH THEM AND I WILL RLEASE IT AFTER SOME PLAYING AND TAKING A PICTURE. SO IF YOU DONT KNOW ANSWER DONT SAY ANY COMPLIMENTS!!! I DONT HAVE PLANT FOR MAKING BIRD LIME AND I THINK MOUSE TRAP IS TOO EXPENSIVE!

I have recently heard things about using Phytoplankton/Zooplankton to attract minnows and other small fish. Can anyone explain how one would go about doing this and how long would the process take? Would this be a practical way of attracting minnows to catch and use as fishing bait?

I'm building a secret project, but I need a chemical that can attract electrons. It has to be easily attainable, relatively cheap, and it can't easily hurt me. I think that my question, is (if possible), which safe chemical is the best at attracting electrons? If one wouldn't have a noticeable effect under those parameters, is there one that would be noticeable at all?

Instead of using compressing of gas using combustion and passing gas and using spark plugs ..... shall we use a dipole magnet in the place of spark plug and and a magnetic piston with a pole on top side.if we rotate the magnet at the spark plug place ,when the opposite pole comes down .......the piston due to attractive force goes up and when like pole comes up it will get repulsed and goes down by this crank can be rotated.this is basically based on the principle of magnetic attraction and repulsion........ i am just a college student its just an idea that came into my mind......please say whether it is possible or not...

A friend of mine MUSAB said that two bodies attract each other because the electrons and protons of both their atoms attract each other, however, I don't think this is the case, I have heard from some where else that it is due to distortion in space time created by a mass and geodesics are formed and they bend towards the center of the mass due to which every other body which comes in its gravitational field tends to move towards its center and all that stuff I have studied in detail. So who is right? If he is wrong, then please also specify where is he wrong, I think that individual atoms can not attract each other because of charge because an atom, as a whole, is a neutral particle. Thanks in advance.

Please don't tell me to "turn the roll around" or to lock the cats out of the bathroom. These are not feasible. The kitties shread the roll no matter position it is in, and we've got one litter box that MUST be in the bathroom. I have 7 cats, and they need a box in almost every room in the house. I've been keeping the current roll in the cabinet, but I'm getting pretty sick of having to hide the roll every time I go to the bathroom. There has to be a better way. I want ideas on how to make a simple, attractive, and durable cover for the toilet paper roll. I'm almost ready to go out and buy a commercial cover, but I think they are hideous -- great gargantuan hunks of plastic. Much thanks for ideas... I have a 3 month old Pharaoh Hound who can (when she's an adult) jump up to 6' high. We live in a wooded area with lots of little animals like squirrels and rabbits. I'm afraid she'll catch sight of something and hop over the fence and take off into the woods. I don't really want to do an electric fence unless it's a last resort. She doesn't stay out for long periods, mostly just to go to the bathroom and when we're hanging out. Bushes are also not an option because A) I don't have the money to buy ones that are tall enough and fill the entire length (about 120') and B) There's gravel around the fence and not good for planting. What do you think?

Trying to see how I can upgrade my magnetic glove by increasing the strength of the electromagnetic field around it presently I can attract objects just 2-3 inches and by calculation if I increase the voltage to 18v from 9v but it would result into I^2R loss besides if I can successfully increase the strength then I would be talking of how to regulate the field using muscle sensors and an arduino board .

A few years ago I was attending a Halloween attraction where a conversation started about seeing a red skull. We asked a few of the actors and I got the name of the attraction's special effects person. What we were seeing was a programmable sheet of red LEDs that would flash so fast that you could only see the after image. The F/X guy called it Vertigo Lights. I understand the concept, but wondered if anyone has come across anything like this. Could this be controlled by an arduino, or would a program need to be written to control all of the lights simultaneously? I haven't been able to find anything like it in any of my searches. Any clues would be great!

Here is a free idea for the glowing contest. I don't have the time or inclination to make it, so y'all can fight over who does it if you want.Basically, the idea is just a yellow or pale green led or series of leds that glow in the same pattern as female fireflies, in the theory that this will attract males to your garden or whatever. I know that you are supposed to get rid of extraneous light sources to attract fireflies, but this sounds like it could work to me. Feel free to do it, so long as you give me credit for the original idea in the first line of the ible.Doesn't anybody like it...even a little bit...?

I am working on a project in which I have to control a small setup at the end of a motor shaft using an electromagnet. The electromagnet needs to be around the shaft inbetween the setup and the motor. So I have used a metallic ferromagnetic spool(image attached) and wound 32 gauge wire on it to make it an electromagnet and put the shaft through it. Since this core made out of spool is hollow, I'm not sure how the magnetic field will behave. I tried powering up the one I made and it' seems to be both attracting and repelling a magnet's pole (edges attract while centre somewhat repels). Anyone got any idea about this?

Hi Everyone, I've been searching for a small (20 to 30mm Dia) disc shaped EM lock for a project I'm working on but can't find any. This type of lock's function, where when the electrical power is turned on the magnet activates, attracting a pin or plate, is what I need it to do but I can't find them small and flat enough. I then found some 24V EM brakes for a "Duplicator" (copy machine?) on Ebay where the size may be ok but if they were flatter it would be better. From what I understand these work the opposite way. The brake pad is normally engaged ("locked") to the hub by a spring, then when electrical power is turned on, the brake pad separates from the hub allowing it to rotate. Is this correct? Would it be possible to convert the brake into a lock merely by reversing the wiring or would I need to reverse the direction of the winding? Would that work to then attract a plate when it is turned on? Also, how much could I reduce the voltage and have it still attract a metal plate with a decent strength - say from 1/4" away? Thanks for you help! :)

It was in a contest and it seems you cannot delete stuff that was entered in a contest. I made the instructable to attract smarter people than me to the problem of unattended concentrated solar cooking by combining 2 reflective troughs (to mimic a dish). (Troughs are easy to make (bent in one direction). while dishes are bent in 2 planes so they really hard to make without wrinkles on the reflector material. Nobody got attracted so I guess the idea is dead. Anyway, for me personally, it was a stepping stone on the way to the clam shaped solar reflector. So it was useful but it is history now. So is there any way to delete it or substitute another thing in its place? Thank you Brian White

Right so my bestfriend is jealous of what my boyfriend and I have, or what I have with him... She told me yesterday that I am a completely different person when I'm around him and that it makes him not right for me... With her I try to have actual conversations but it just turns in to he's saying how cute Kyle Busch looks, or Carl Edwards without a shirt, or her talking about finding her teachers attractive, I always know what Mr, D is wearing, McGee from NCIS (I personally find DiNozzo more attractive). With him though I don't have to worry about hearing how good Mr.Alex looked in his new black shirt and out of style glasses... He and I have talked politics, hunting, and movies that she refuses to watch because she thinks they'll be boring, like, "Shooter" with Mark Whalberg... Is it that my personality is different or just that with my boyfriend I am able to explore my mind more and talk about things other than attractive men and Kevin Harvick in tight pants... I'm obviously not good at having a best friend and a boyfriend, I need some serious help on this subject...

Hi- I'm trying to figure out our shade options for a casual wedding. I'm hoping to find something fairly cheap, easy to build/take down, and made with reusable materials. Am I dreaming? We have tools and the like, but the solution has to be pretty easy. The event will be stressful enough. There might be a breeze (probably not too heavy) and it has to look okay for the older and more judgemental guests. Preferably it would fit 10 chairs and a couple of small tables. Do you have any good diy links? Vendors for parachute material? Thanks in advance!
The offer baseball, jersey display cases and flag cases at very attractive prices. Would like to hear from anyone who bought from them. http://www.displaygifts.com/
