2002 Blazer suddenly chokes and turns off?

When Im driving, usually on long trips, my blazer doesn't want to run as if suddenly it got shift to neutral...I have to pull over right away because soon after it will shut down. Other times when Im driving locally...if I turn off the car and want to turn it back on it won't turn on... once its off whether driving on long trips or locally, if i leave it for about a good hr or so, it will turn back on as if nothing was ever wrong...I've changed the fuel pump once and the fuel filter a couple of times...

automotive section

I think that instructables should have an automotive section  soo people can show upgrades to their cars  or how to solve problems and so on so forth. even if its just a subsection of workshop  a;though it would be better if it had its own place on instructables.

Plastics in the Automotive Industry

This isn't an in-depth tech article or anything but it's interesting to realize just how much the auto industry runs on plastic: http://www.paxonplastic.com/the-automotive-industry-welcomes-a-plastic-future/ I even read that a 3d printed car might be hitting the market as early as the end of this year. Not sure if that's just a rumor but it doesn't seem far off.

Automotive reindeer antlers

Every year at Christmas I put antlers on my car. (Don’t necessarily do the red nose... Rudolf isn’t the only reindeer...) The store-bought antlers were fine on my old Saturn, but they look too puny on the Jeep that replaced it. I’d like to make my own, but they can’t be so tall or so wide that they’re an inconvenience - or catch too much air and break (or break the windows). Any ideas on how to pursue this utterly frivolous project?

led driver automotive

Can I power an AC LED driver with DC voltage, from what I understand the driver controls voltage and current. I purchase an LED light 7 x 1watt , the driver was rated 85 - 265 volt ac input but the seller had written 12 volt DC with grease pen across the printed label. This light works fine so I ordered 7 more like it with same ratings from a differant seller and they only work on 115 - 230 volt. Now I need to find proper driver or ship back to Hong Kong( Grrrr) I have seen drivers rated at 12 volt AC, will these work on 12 volt DC voltage? Thank you in advance, Duncan.

Automotive Power Loss Annunciator

The photo shows what I'm dealing with: a sound module ($2.50 including shipping from China) and an automotive auxiliary power cord (cigarette lighter.) The sound module has a "play" button at the end of the yellow wires. The "black box" has two tasks:                 - detect loss of power on the 12V cord                 - momentarily connect the two yellow wires (as if the button switch had been pressed.) So far I’ve been told that some sort of relay and a timer could be involved, but since I’m not a Electrical Engineer, I don’t know the specifics. I know that in the automotive world, there are big, bulky relays, but I'm wondering if there are relays in the integrated circuit world? I really need specifics like part numbers and circuit diagrams. Thanking you in advance for your help.

D.I.Y. Automotive Black Box, DVR, OBDII

Friends, I am a noob that is considering building a Black Box for my car, I suspect that I am not the first so please if you know of discussions on developing an awesome Black Box please direct me to it. The Black Boxes being offered are Gold Dusted empty, expensive crapware. I want added protection from bad drivers, bad insurance companies and bad cops so I want six or more 1K or better cameras and DVR with the ability to store on any size SD card and/or SSD. I also want telemetry from many sources like GPS, speed, throttle and brake pedal positions, steering degrees, OBDII and more. Two problems I suspect will be power drain when the car is parked and chip cooling. I'd like to Stink Tank this idea with interested peeps (WOW! I always wanted to use Peeps, yeah, I know Late) I look forward to hearing from you Sincerely

Diy Automotive book recommendations for (vast majority of cars)?

I was wondering if anyone had any good automotive books that would help a novice diy mechanic be better at diagnosing problems and doing harder tasks.  I'm looking for a good book to teach a bit of background theory ("How car's work") and specific tasks and "How" to use tools to find out what the problem is. Or any special techniques required for less common diy/adv diy tasks. Example; how to do a valve job in a car, how to reset a car to TDC, best ways to do other things etc. Something a bit better than a Chiltons or Haynes, or even less specific. Perhaps something that could provide help with the ASE. I'm not going to actually go into automotive at the moment, but I would like to learn more of the guts.

Using AC to operate a automotive 12 VDC relay

My question is:  can a typical 12 vdc automotive relay be operated (voltage across terminals 85-86)? I am building a car from a riding lawn mower for our grandson.  I want to operate lights from the 12 VDC circuit but I need a signal voltage to actuate the relay across relay terminals 85-86.  I would like to use the existing AC powered light(s) voltage for this purpose?  Possible?

Automotive can bus read-only on hardware level

Need "Timer" help right away. Automotive 12VDC

I need a 12 vdc timer that will pass thru 12v once activated, BUT only for about 1 to 1.5 seconds. Then it has to stop passing the 12v even though it is still powered (12v is the still being supplied). Once the supply voltage is removed, it needs to reset so that it can pass thru again the next time supply voltage is introduced. I can solder & read. That is about my limit of electrical circuits. Would an IC 555 timer be able to do this somehow? Thanks STEVE.

request, 12vcd (automotive) to 12 vac power supply

Why?  So I can run a pile of 'pro' audio equipment on a parade float without resorting to a generator or an off the shelf 120vac (barely) inverter. The equipment I'm talking about is a pair of 4 channel wireless mike receivers (8 mikes total) and a 10 channel mixer.  Other input comes from an MP3 player or CD player.  We also have an AM/FM/HD radio on board for those long waits in parade linup.  The power amp is an automotive (12vdc) unit, 4 x 1000 watts.  Main power is a pair of deep-cycle NAPA (optima clone) spiral cell batteries topped-off from the tow vehicle via a charge isolator.  There is also an 35watt solar panel (again, for those long lineups) run through the charge isolator.  The solar panel maintains the batteries while the float is parked or in storage. Cracking open the gear we have, every single one of them uses a 10:1 step down transformer to drop 120 vac line to 12vac before dumping it into the mainboard. It looks like 12vac @ 3 amps will do it for the wireless mike receivers and mixer, but why not shoot for 5 amps to be safe? Ideally, there would be some serious filtering and regulation/protection on the output. In a Perfect & Ideal world, there would be multiple 12vac outputs each capable of 2 or 3 amps and isolated from each other. Too much for a request?  You never know if you don't ask. And, in advance, many thanks!

Use of IC Buck-Boost drivers in automotive LED lighting projects

I've been contemplating the use of high power amber or yellow LEDs in a low cost automotive warning system (think tow truck).  However, car electrical systems are not set at 12v.  They can range from 9 to 19v with spikes up to 70v.  To protect the components I would need more than just a current limiting resister.  Under those conditions they would need a buck-boost driver.  Unfortunately I'm new to ICs/power LEDa and not sure where to start.  I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with further guidance.  I Thanks! -Mike

can a automotive fuel filter be used to filter drinking water? Answered

I am working on an emergency water filtration system for when I go camping. This system would be used to manually filter out sediment before I purify the water. Automotive fuel filters are cheap and easy to connect to tubing, but I am afraid that the paper filter element might be coated in some sort of toxic chemical that will leech into the water as i filter it. I cannot find any information about this subject on the internet, so if you know anything please tell me. thank you.

Need help with designing a simple12 volt timer for an automotive application

Hello all, I have an idea to make a pre-oiler system for my car's engine.  The idea is to hook up a 12 volt oil pump  to bring oil from the pan up to the head to pre lube everything before I start the engine.  This is to hopefully help prevent unnecessary wear on the engine.  I want to have a timer to control the electric pump so that when the key is turned to the position just before "start" that it triggers the pump to start for  approximately 30-60 seconds.  The question is really, where do I start to look  for information and parts to build this simple circuit?  Also, would it need to be hooked up to constant power to store the timing program, or can it be just a simple mechanical/electrical trigger from the ignition to start the countdown? Thank you for your time in advance, -Mike
