Mystery of the CO2 Balloons!

Filled some balloons w co2 from dry ice in a soda bottle. As expected, they act like a lens, a magnifier of sound. No mystery there. Just as a dense glass refracts light, the denser gas refracts sound. The mystery is why balloons filled with co2 leak down faster than identical balloons filled by mouth. Yes, there is some co2 in my exhaled breath, but it is mostly n2, and o2. I would hav expected the n2 and o2 to leak out more quickly, being smaller molecules. So whatzup wit dat?

Where are the vacuum balloons?

I am interested in making a vacuum balloon. I have been looking around and I can't find a single vacuum balloon that floated. If anyone has any links, pictures, videos, or suggestions they would be very helpful. The closest I found is this and it collapsed just before it floated.http://s113.photobucket.com/albums/n219/coreview2/?action=view¤t;=VB03.jpg

Weather balloon photography

I have been thinking about launching a balloon for a while now, but was concerned with a few problems. I just found this: https://www.instructables.com/id/Low-cost-Near-Space-Without-HAM-Radios-or-Cellphon/ Which is good, because most of the other tutorials I've seen require one or the other. Other than this, does anyone have any tips about what kind of balloon/chute/tracking system I should use? What about the payload, what is it usually made out of?

Self-Flying Balloon

I have an idea to make a bunch of smallish balloons that have a LED sinside and small circuits that would control small heating elements to randomly change the density of the air inside the balloons, making them rise or fall. Just as a fun art project, making a bunch of them and letting them into a room for a party or something. A couple of issues I have: I'm having a hard time figuring out how to calculate the buoyancy, though that may have to come later once I decide on all the components. I don't want to use any lighter-than-air materials like Helium, just regular air heated up. I've been trying to find some small ceramic heaters, but I haven't had much luck. Ideally, something like this seems like it would work perfectly, but I need to find some that I can buy in quantities less than 20,000: http://cdsk.manufacturer.globalsources.com/si/6008801115398/pdtl/Heating-element/1070197186/Surface-Heating-Elements.htm Whatever I choose would also need to heat up and cool down pretty quickly so the rising/falling would have a stronger effect. I might be asking too much here. I'd need the whole circuit to be pretty small and lightweight. If I use an Arduino Uno, could I just transplant the ATmega328 into the balloon? If I used a small watch battery, would that even provide enough juice to operate an LED and a heating element? Anything bigger seems like it would be too heavy. As for the casing, I plan on whipping something up in Blender and printing it out in lightweight plastic. It would have to hold the circuitry and be airtight to keep the balloon sealed. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Water pump for filling balloon

Hi, Everyone. I am building a carnival game, and I need to know what kind of pump I need to pump water from a 5 gallon bucket into a balloon that is about 4 feet above the bottom of the bucket. The object of the game is to squirt water into a hole that has a pipe connected to it going into the bucket. The water than will get pumped up out of the bucket into a baloon that will end up popping from being overfilled, splashing water everywhere. I was thinking that some kind of submersible pump like this- along with a float switch to turn the pump on when some water goes in it, but I was not sure if this pump would have enough pressure to fill and pop a baloon. Thanks.

Can a vacuum balloon be built with current material technologies? Answered

A balloon's bouyancy (lifting force) is a function of how much air it displaces. Today's balloons use hot air, hydrogen, helium and other lighter than air gases for lift. In 1670 Franceso de Lana, an italian monk, proposed the use of a vacuum. One major problem is how to make the structure light enough to support a vacuum without collapsing in on itself due to the outside pressure.

Robotic Gripper Runs on Coffee and Balloons - Updated with video

I'm just on FIAH with these Topics. But this one's cool too. Via ScienceDaily: A collaboration between researchers from Cornell, University of Chicago, and iRobot has resulted in a robot gripper that conforms to practically any object. From the article: Here's how it works: An everyday party balloon filled with ground coffee -- any variety will do -- is attached to a robotic arm. The coffee-filled balloon presses down and deforms around the desired object, and then a vacuum sucks the air out of the balloon, solidifying its grip. When the vacuum is released, the balloon becomes soft again, and the gripper lets go. This sounds like another hi-tech device that could easily be duplicated by a DIYer. All you need is a balloon, coffee grounds, and a vacuum pump. Update 2 November: Found the video! It gives a much better idea of how the thing works. Via, image from same.

How do I make custom balloon art? (Not balloon animals)

Hi I was interested in making balloons in different shapes. Similar in make to beach toys or those inflatable chairs. I'm having trouble finding information on how to make them from scratch. I'm assuming they're made of vinyl sheets but I'm not sure of the method to cut and connect them together, or where to obtain those air valves common on all inflatable balloons. Any information would be great. Thanks!

I want a balloon to "pop" at the touch of a sharp knife. Storing a ballon to optimum stretch inside a cake?

I made 1 excellent exploding cake with a balloon. I haven't been able to replicate the event as successfully. I need the balloon to be maximally inflated, to the point it will go "pop"! when the merest touch of a sharp blade touches it. Also if the balloon is concealed inside a whip cream, cake combo, does hot or cold temperature affect the expansion of the balloon? Is there anyone out there who has experience, or can solve this dilemma for me?

painting 7' latex balloon to look like the moon

Hello out there curious and creative Instructables! I am planning on turning a 7' white latex balloon into the Moon. I plan on painting it after it is inflated. I wondered if anyone has had any experience painting on balloons. What kind of paint will adhere and flex with the balloon? I also intend to light it from inside so the it will "glow". I don't know how to determine what kind/how many LED's to use to create the right amount of glow. Since the balloon will be large, do I need to worry about the heat from the LED's? I can keep the battery or AC connection on the outside of the balloon and above it on the ceiling so that it will not show. Put your thinking caps on and help me out once again. Thanks!'

How to build a strongbox for a video camera?

I guess that is what I want to build. I basically need a box to hold a camera and a GPS that can also withstand a lot of damage. It would probably be a lot like the rigs they use to send cameras up with weather balloons. Any recommendations for materials? I can build it well enough, however, I don't know what can take damage and protect the electronics at the same time.

holiday inflatable - giant floating (indoor) balloon

We have a Gemmy inflatable at work (a giant Homer Simpson -- about 8 feet tall) and we were wondering if we could somehow fill it with helium and float it on the ceiling. We're concerned that it's too permeable (when the fan is not going, it deflates FAST). One idea was to coat the inside with polyurethane (turning the fan on to blow it throughout the balloon) but that seems like it wouldn't work very well (too patchy), and could make it too heavy. Another option would be to take a bunch of balloons, insert them into the Homer, and then inflate the smaller balloons (and tie them off). Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Priest on party-balloons flight goes missing

"A Roman Catholic priest who floated off under hundreds of helium party balloons was missing Monday off the southern coast of Brazil."Link via CNNIt is hard to tell if this is funny or sad. -On one hand, anyone who attempts to break the record for longest party balloon flight is knowingly risking their life, and therefore open to be criticized / mocked when the likely outcome occurs.-On the other hand, this was a priest trying to raise money for a cause.-But back on the other hand, the cause he was trying to raise money for was a trucker's rest stop.It is a close call, but that is two in favor in puns, and one against. The puns have it!

i'm looking for an idea to make and float ghost props on Halloween.

I've seen a couple instructables on ghosts in here, but not one that fit the bill. This year I tried a helium filled balloon with white material on it. The idea was to use an LED inside the white balloon, drape the material over the balloon and let it float in my front yard. Secure it with fishing string. But the lightest material I found was still too heavy for the balloon. The material wasn't cheesecloth, but as close to it as i could find. Any ideas or recommendations?

Teens take pics from edge of space with a balloon

With a latex balloon, a camera, and some home-built electronics, four teens in Spain managed to get pictures from 20 miles up! The balloon was inflated with helium, the camera and electronics were attached and away it went up to 100,000 feet before it popped and returned to earth. The camera was still snapping away when the students picked it up 10km from the launch site.Team leader Gerard Marull, 18, said: "We were overwhelmed at our results, especially the photographs, to send our handmade craft to the edge of space is incredible."Completing their landmark experiment on February, the Meteotek team had to account for a wide variety of variables and rely on a lot of luck."The balloon we chose was inflated with helium to just over two metres and weighed just 1500 grams," said Gerard. "It was able to carry the sensor equipment and digital Nikon camera which weighed 1.5kg. Link
