Bases

Here we discuss the optional idea of using bases in water wars. In this forum, we talk about designing/building them as well as other things like windows, roof coverings, turrets, and the protection of the base itself.

Bamboo 'stanchions' base...?

I'm working on a set of stanchions for a 'Green' event, as we are expecting quite a few people lining up out front of our booth. I'm thinking about bamboo canes for the poles, with holes drilled near the top to allow 1" manila rope (or similar) through, but I'm not sure how to make them stand up, what to use for a base. Ideally it should be enviro-friendly, cheap, light and durable. That's not too much to ask, is it.....?

Portfolio Based Contest

As I was browsing the past winners of the Epilog contest, I was struck by the fact that not a single grand prize winner has posted an instructable using the laser cutter they won! I assume one of the goals of contests is to keep members making. So, how can Instructables help ensure those once a year, high dollar, innaccessible prizes find their way into the hands of makers that will use them to further contribute to the community? I'd like to see a contest where members could submit a collection of their best instructables along with a statement as to why they deserve to win. Members, judges and/or staff could consider the member's entire portfolio, community participation, achievements, site loyalty, and future goals when choosing a winner. I imagine it could be similar to the IoT giveaways, but on a more grand scale, like the Makerspace contest.

Mount a Dell ST2420L Flat-Panel Monitor on 2405FPW Base?

Hi Everybody.  I just bought a Dell ST2420L flat-panel monitor to replace my old 2405FPW.  It's a better monitor, but its base is terrible.  The old monitor's base could be raised and lowered by several inches, the screen could be rotated 90 degrees, and it tilted farther.  The new base isn't adjustable vertically, won't rotate, and tilts only a few degrees.  I was hoping I could mount the new monitor on the old base, but the mounting hardware is all different.  The attached pictures show (1) the 2405's base with mounting bracket removed, (2) the 2405's mounting bracket, which bolts onto the base, (3) the place on the back of the monitor into which the mounting bracket slots, and (4) how the ST2420L connects to its stand (I'd rather not take mine apart to photograph, but I'll do it if anybody who wants to help needs to see the hardware more clearly). I wonder if anybody has successfully adapted the base of a 2405FPW to mount an ST2420L or similar, recent monitor, or anything similar?  Or would be interested in taking on the project?  Thanks for any help or ideas. Regards, Jim Crutchfield Long Island City, NY

Resistor for NPN Transistor Base? Answered

Hey all, I need help identifying the value of the resistor I would need for the base of a 2n2222a transistor in this circuit. If you need any additional information, ask and ill try to answer asap. The resistance of the relay coil is 106 ohms and its rated for 6v but I operate it at 5v. The 3.3v is supplied by a step down circuit connected to the same power supply as the 5v used to operate the relay. If you can, please also list the steps you took to calculate the value of the resistor so that it can be useful for future use, I couldn't find a simple answer online. Ty,

Plexi-Project Help

Hello everyone, I've been looking at LED projects and devising my own for quite some time now. What i finally decided on was a Plexi glass tube containing a bonsai tree, with an LED array above to give it light. My plan for the LED array is squared away. and i have selected my tube (diameter of 8in). My hold up is the base and the roof of the tube. I want a fairly heavy material which can be machined to yield a snug fit. Does anyone one have any suggestions for the material or a possible source? if at all possible i would like this component to be less than 30$.

The possibility of crane-based railguns

It's just a curiosity. Anyway, so there I was, reading up on railguns (just for the heck of it), and after reading the part mentioning "millions of amps", it got me thinking, "What power source can provide millions of amps?" Then and there, I thought, "Lightning!", but how I could I use it? Wait... Oh, cranes! I could stick the railgun on a crane, then whenever the crane gets hit by lightning, it would fire a projectile! Now, who's willing to risk their lives to load a piece of metal up there? :D Nah, just joking. Anyway, I was just wondering if this idea would be feasible in the first place, and what would it take to implement.

When electricity is passed through a copper wire it becomes magnet.let be the matter ,electricity be  energy and the copper being magnetized be the result.now if we pass magnet through copper wire then it produces electricity.we can say that matter+energy=result again result +matter =that energy.again if we see other examples like if we apply electricity to led light then it produces light again if we apply light to led light it produces electricity.again if we apply electricity to speakers then it produces sound but again if we apply sound to it then it produces electricity.so is the thing that: matter +energy =result and again matter +result=energy is right?has any scientist proved this or it is incorrect? thanks for viewing and further answering

Microcontroller based inductor winder? Answered

Is there any way, and I'm sure there is but I don't know how to do it, to make an inductor winder that is programable. Any type of microcontroller brand would work, be it arduino, parallax, pickaxe, whatever. Basically what I would need is a code, and a schematic that would drive two servos, one continuos rotation to do the actual winding and one to move the inductor back and forth, to keep an even winding going. The code would have to dictate how many turns the servo does in order to get the desired number of windings. It can even have to be reprogramed for every inductor from the PC, to keep it more simple. --Thanks         P.S. Sorry if this question was difficult to understand, I didn't know how to put into words what I                           had pictured in my mind...

xmega event-based IRCOM?

The IRCOM module has a capability of connecting to the uart not through a standard pin, but through the event system. This should make it possible to get IrDA input data for the IRCOM module from a pin other than standard or alternate RX pin for that uart.  But I haven't had much luck getting this facility working.  Has anybody used it?  Google shows nothing. I am actually getting data, but it's not the data that is being sent via IrDA. I think my problem may be that I don't know which events to configure the event system for.  I've tried the following: low level high level (i.e., low level + invert pin) rising and falling edges rising and falling edges with inverted pin With each of these, the IRCOM system does get data to the uart, but the data is not correct (and it's not consistent, either--the same IrDA packet generates different outputs at different times). Is a clock needed? Any thoughts?

Need help with a lotion base recipe.

Hello, wasn't sure where to put this, and I didn't see a beauty forum.  Well. first of all. here is a formula for a lotion base that I tweaked. 8 oz distilled water 1 oz fresh aloe vera gel 1 oz floral water   1 tsp citric acid 2 oz glycerin 1 oz emulsifying wax 1 oz beeswax 1 oz shea butter 1 oz coconut oil 1 oz almond oil 1 oz avocado oil tsp essential oil 1/2 oz stearic acid I heard that 1 oz is about 2 Tbsp (tablespoons), but still not sure on this. It came out a bit thicker than I would like it.  I dunno if I should add more emulsifying wax, take out the beeswax, or both.  I need help making it less greasy feeling and a little thinner.  I made a batch I'm not sure what to do with.  I might just use it to repair those cases of dried out skin that appear around the winter season.  Any suggestions?

DIY DSLR/Mirorless camera power base/grip

Hi. I'm looking for a way to build my own powerbase/grip for my lumix g85 camera by using a power adaptor, long charge battery cells and something that can allow the user to see the remaining charge (because on the g85, whenever you use the power adapter, the power/battery level isn't showing on the LCD screen since it's no longer in the cam). I'm inspired mostly by those two youtube videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL_U_tl3Q20&t;=903s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYvf77SRUQ0 The reason why I would like battery cells instead of an attached small power bank or even Canon batteries is because I want to house everything safely in the base (no loose wire/cable anywhere on the cam and solidity in the base so nothing can break and fell  by accidend). Although, I don't know if it's going to require a power regulator and/or converter. My knowledge on electronic is very limited, which is the reason why I'm asking for some help & advices on how the proceed.  Anybody who's interested & with the required knowledge here would like to help ? Please let me know. Thank you

1 year pro membership to whoever figures this out first! I'm trying to remember the name of an old 80's or 90's toy. Answered

Okay everyone, I have been trying to remember what these toys were called for the last couple of years.  They were in the 80's or 90's and could change from a vehicle into a base/battle station. I know I had a few of them.  The two that I remember are a tank that changed into a large base and a three-wheeled vehicle that changed into a gun turret thing (if memory serves me correctly). There was normally a switch or button to press and you would hear a loud gear/spring noise when they changed.  I know it was not a Transformer or GI Joe toy. They had small scaled human figures that were tan in color and a little larger than the figures that came with Technozoids (if anyone remembers those).  The figures were in the same "seated position" (for lack of a better way to describe it) as the Technozoid ones. As I said in the title, there will be a 1 year pro membership to whoever figures this out first!

Repair of a bi-pin light base

I'm trying to repair my outdoor post light.  The bi-pin bases have rusted.  I purchased new bases and went to rewire the light, but there are some difficulties in doing this.  It would be incredibly easy if I was able to remove the wires from the new bases, connect them to the power wires, then reattach the base.  The pin slots don't appear readily removable, however, and the piece is put together with rivets, so taking it apart and reassembling it would be...  not so easy. I was just wondering if anyone has attempted this and has any tips. Thanks!

Intel Edison Base Shield compatibility

Hi everyone, I was selected for the IoT invitational of Intel + Instructables and I as I was going to start testing the sensors I received, I noticed that there was no base shield for the sensor connections included in the package. I suppose the rest of the chosen participants didn't receive the base shield as well. Since the local stores near me do not have that shield (http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/Grove_-_Base_shield_v2) I wonder if other Arduino compatible sensor shields can be used on the Intel Edison expansion board, since it operates at 1.8V and I don't want to fry it. Thanks in advance!
