Beautiful reuse ideas

Inhabitat is in the middle of its Spring Greening Competition and now has a list of finalists up that can be voted on. There are lots of great ideas for inspiration here. I especially liked the pendant lamp made from poptabs and the inner tube bookshelf (big surprise, I know). Another design that looks good and oddly familiar is the vase made from a light bulb. But really, they're all worthy of a look. Spring Greening Competition

And now, for something completely different.....

During my early morning walk today I came across the following creature - it was a huge, about 9 inches (23 cm) across. It was the most beautiful gigantic moth I have ever seen in these parts. It is a Giant Silkworm Moth also known as a Saturnid Moth. This one is (for whatever reasons) called the Cyclops. I just had to share some pictures of one (not my pictures....I didn't have my camera with me).' Isn't he just gorgeous?

Beautiful Crystal Covered Apartment

Copper-sulfate crystals are lovely with their rich blue color. So lovely that artist Roger Hiorn completely covered the inside of an apartment in London with them. This was done by sealing it and pumping in 75,000 liters of supersaturated solution. After it had cooled and been drained off, the doors have been opened for visitors to come in two or three at a time. This can only be done since the apartment was set to be demolished. Stop by before it closes on Nov. 30 and gets destroyed. Link

Painting Video Portraits

My friend Marc Scheff is an accomplished digital painter, and recently came up with a new idea: when painting someone's portrait, why not give them both the finished product and the work as it was created? Thus were born Video Portraits. He's done a bunch, which you can find on his blog.I've included two, here. One of a woman named Polly Rose and another of Barack Obama (our next president-to-be!) Beautiful sculptures made from pencils

Jennifer Maestre makes some insanely cool stuff with colored pencils. The pencils aren't used to create the art, they are a part of it. Sea urchins and fantastical creatures get reimagined as colorful spiky sculptures and to think that she didn't even go to an art school until she was in her 30's. Check out the interview with Jennifer that has lots of cool new works as well as her own site that has lots of pieces from the past few years.See more pencil art here.via Neatorama

Is it possible to make your own business card? I'd like one for my tiny cleaning business. Answered

How can i make a cool business card that still looks professional?  I have a very small cleaning business, it's just me, my clients ask me for business cards quite often but I'm loathe to buy 500 at a time and have a boring old regular type of card. I know the talent on instructables is endless so is there anyone out there who has a cool idea for a business card that folks will actually want to keep? I'd like colourful, average size and fits in a wallet and preferably made with household stuff. the supplies I'd like to use include acrylic paints, printer paper, glue, maybe watercolour paper, etc. I don't have a printer :( Thanks

Make HID (human interface design) beautiful

There are few ubiquitous household items as ugly in form and function as a computer keyboard. They're everywhere. They're an inefficient and archaic visual distraction, barely suited to stamp ink on dead trees, as they were originally designed to do. Computer components need to be elegant, form well married to specific functionality needs, if computers are to fade into the background of life and thus best support it -  and that is nigh impossible with the keyboard hanging out. I'm a hci software guy. I spent almost three years writing a library of code to enable a new generation of input devices… beautiful, simple  and efficient… closer to playing a musical instrument than typing on a typewriter. I need designs for a piece or two of hardware that shows off how beautiful and/or hidden a computer input device can be when you completely minimize its form… If you are an industrial designer or a mid level maker or even a just a for the fun of it 2d or 3d CAD nerd, allowing for the device functionality will be a trivial concern, with 90% of your attention paid to the form of the device… and that's what I'm looking for… a beautiful replacement for the horrible and outdated keyboard and mouse that shows off the features of the software and blends in to people's lives. The designs will be 5-key and 10-key. The electronics area to allow for will be pretty simple -  probably just an HID chip - as tiny as possible - with ports to wire to buttons, etc -  a power source, wireless connector (preferably low power bluetooth), and wires to connect the chip to everything it needs to connect to. While the designs can be created as completely conceptual, we would prefer to be able to physically prototype them using something like 3d printing, laser cutting or other maker accessible options and electronics components that would also be maker accessible. Preferably, the file format will be solidworks compatible. For now, this is an unpaid gig, with the compensation mainly being in the form of some really sweet portfolio designs, hope for a better HID tomorrow, and maybe a makey makey type gift for those times when nothing but a banana piano will do. We do have investor meetings lined up and will credit any prototype designs used to show off the software during those, as well. If we decide to sell the software in various configurations packaged with hardware variations, and everyone feels like a good time was had by all in this trial run, then we can talk about a production partnership. If that were to be a possibility, industrial design related experience or strong enough to heavily research it type interest - sourcing, packaging, etc. - would be a big bonus. (As a note, while the  HCI is all key input based now, there will later be support for things like 3d tracking options - So, the project could get even more exciting on the HID side.) __________________________________________________ If you are interested in learning more, please use the PM system provided through Instructables as first contact. Further contact info will be provided should the initial contacts merit it. Thanks!

Time-Lapse shows the beauty of the galaxy we live in.

I recently purchased a Canon EOS DSLR.This video made it painfully obvious what I need to be doing with it!This gorgeous video is a compilation of shots taken with a Canon EOS-5D every 20 seconds over about nine hours at a star party in Fort Davis, Texas. It's a humbling sight. The Canon was equipped with a fisheye lens (an EF 15mm f/2.8 lens) and powered with an external battery to capture all that goodness. The more interesting part is the replacement anti-alias filter the photographer, William Castleman, used: The Canon's stock AA filter blocks out certain red wavelengths to achieve a "more desirable" skin tone, but if it's replaced with a filter that lets those wavelengths in, you've got yourself a camera capable of shooting a galaxy, as seen here, even if we can't see it with the naked eye.Its also great to know about the filter, I am off to google more into that now!Check it out on VimeoVia Gizmodo

I have some beautiful chairs that need some serious work. does anyone have any suggestions?

I recently received a set of 4 wooden table chairs from a friend. 3 of them are in pieces and are hardly salvageable. But there is one that I think I can work with. The wood has been severely warped as it has been sitting outside in the rain, and it looks like theres a little termite damage on one corner, but it is a beautiful chair and I'm really hoping that I can fix it up. I would love to do something really creative with it so let me know what YOU would do with this chair please. Thank you :)

Making an awesome chandelier - the cheap way?

Hello all I'm very into art and like beautiful things in life. However, beautiful things are typically very expensive. I've found this chandelier/loft lamp that i'm particularly into. It's the Jeremy Close Blossom. It dosen't seem very complicated (ok, it looks complicated, but many parts are exactly the same), but it is very beautiful and very, very expensive. It's a whopping $10,000! The leafs themselves are made out of ceramic and the skeleton is made out of steel/aluminium.  What struck me was: isn't this a project that would be easily accomplished using a mould and some sort of foam? - paint it black and there you go..? The skeleton itself, i imagine, would be constructed by a series of concentric rings suspended on a wire of some sort. The leafs would them be clamped somehow to the rings by some sort of  tightening mechanism.. Any ideas how to do this one? - how would one make the shape of the leafs to make a mould? - are there anything out there on the market that looks like it, but is a lot cheaper?
