Where does the belly button lead to? Answered

I know it scars over after birth, but what if you opened it back up? Would it still lead somewhere? Could it be used again as a 'feeding port' if opened? Sorry for not picking a best answer to my last question about snow. I wasn't convinced there was a best answer but I did learn a lot.

Full Belly Project

GUESS WHAT!It turns out that Full Belly Project has their headquarters in my town!!!!!!!!!I already met Mr.Jack(the creator, i forgot his last name) and his wife at their lovely used book store and i get to volunteer this saturday at the headquarters inventing new shelling devices and helping others with their projects!!!!Im soooo excited to be part of Full Belly!!!!and Mr.Jack mentioned an MIT student coming down in the near future(i cant remember when he said so) and i was wondering if its any of you guys on this site.

Full Belly Project, The Olympics and Me

The Olympics are supposed to be the "green" Olympics this year.Since they are going to be held in Beijing they are going to have a fun time making it green.One way they are doing this is all the aircraft that will be flying the athletes will be powed by bio-fuel derived from the jatropha tree.The people in charge of the commercials and filming it wanted to make a way to inform the people watching about this.At Full Belly(who has their headquarters in Wilmington NC) they make various machines designed to shell nuts.Jock Brandis(head-honcho, inventor of the nut sheller) was contacted and asked to make an electric Jatropha sheller. This sheller is going to be shipped down to Miami and will shell Jatropha nuts at a Jatropha farm while being filmed and a commercial will be born.I am helping make this sheller at the headquarters! So my finger prints(and a little tiny bit of blood) will be in the Olympics! (not really, just in a commercial during the Olympics)So, if you do nothing at all with your life, make sure you at least watch the Olympics to see the commercial!

Of all the engines I am surprised not to have seen made here, the valveless pulse-jet is it. Sure, they're inefficient and relatively low-powered (compared to a "normal" turbine-based jet), but they are astoundingly simple.At heart, it's a swollen pipe with a fuel supply and no consideration for the neighbours.These suckers are loud.So maybe you want to ?Or just look at the way this engine is mounted, imagine riding it, and shuddering in anticipatory panic.

It is my cousin's wedding soon. It's an indian wedding so many 'events' and lots of food (yes, it is indian). But what I really need is a bigger stomach to fit it all in. How do you do this??

Has anyone ever created a "belly bra" for fat people?

I'm fat myself, so I can't see how this could offend anyone. That said, the design I was thinking of would be similar to the back support brace/slings that pregnant women wear. It would also have velcro attachments for additional things like an absorbant pad for "underneath." Are there any designs/projects here on this site for similar items? Any help would be appreciated.

My kid, Shelia Porkita, hates to even have her hooves touched and they are so long they are curling up. i can't pay a vet to do it and i will probably have no assistance from anyone. Please help!

Universal Nut Sheller

Help with Geomate Jr. ?

My first instructable would be to turn my Geomate jr. into a paper weight or door stop as the company (Apishere)has gone belly up! Does anyone know how to put geocache coordinates into the device. The software they provided doesn't work. I guess the problem I'm having is to get LOC files off of geocaching.com and into the device. I can use either chrome or MS Internet explorer. or Are there any tech savvy makers that can hack this device in other ways?

How do I add on fiber optic bundles to the end of a large single Fiber optic strand/LED?

I would like to create a lighted and animated cuttle fish sculpture and I want to know how I would be able to get the most amount of small single dots of light from a single LED. Rc airplane.

I am starting to design the rc airplane I will build for my senior project. I need help on wing loading and how wide I should make the wing (not wingspan) here's what I have so far: 1. at least a five foot wingspan 2. Twin engine (electric) 3. The estimated weight of the electronics is two kilograms. 4. The estimated weight of the fiberglass for the whole plane should be around four kilograms. 5. Plane will have twin rudders as well and most likely be a belly landed. I also need help on props, engine power, and wing diameter. if I need to specify anything please ask. many thanks    Zach

Want to put 12 different voice instructions into a stuffed lamb. Button pressed; voice begins. Where is this technology?

LambieAnn is a lamb who sees lambs skating on TV and wants to learn to skate. She is the main character in a children's book. I would like to put a voice into her stuffed animal character. When the button would be pressed, it would activate her voice. She would give educational cues that would help all skaters become better i.e keep your head up. There would be a few fun comments too. I would like to know where I can find this technology so the button can be put into the lamb's ear or belly when the stuffed animal is manufacturered.

Looking to buy a Ariakon Overlord Painball pistol

Hey everyone, Ever since I saw the Ariakon Overlord I wanted one. The problem at the time was that had no money. Now I have some disposable income but Ariakon seems to have gone belly up and I cannot find an Overlord anywhere. I have tried google, ebay, online market places and real world market places but I have had no luck. This brings me to my question: Is anybody selling an Ariakon Overlord or know anybody who is? Cow USB HUB

I have been needing a usb hub for a while now, and I went on instructables to see if anyone had good ideas for usb hubs, and i found this and i got the idea to make a usb hub cow(7 port), using a can for teh body, and the hub would sit inside the can, and i would use usb extension cords, 6", to go from the hub to certain parts of teh body. The cow would be standing on its hind legs, and on its belly, the utters, would be 4 usb ports, then the arms would be sticking staright out, but i might have it so i can move them freely, and for each hand would be a usb port, then on the head, the mouth would be the otehr usb port, and i could use fiberoptics or somthing for the eyes to go to the LEDs on the usb hub if it had any, but thats my idea, if anyone has suggestions, they are appriciated, im probably going to make it in a couple weeks, and i will put it on here

Oops - I slightly broke the website. Just a little bit.The thread "...bigger than its belly can" has too many full stops in the title, which confuses computers, apparently.Anyhoo...I was just pointing out that, of all the engines you'd expect to see here, nobody has made a pulse jet engine. Yes, I made a jam jar version, but nobody has made a real one.I don't know why, they're very easy (basically a big pipe with a fuel supply and no consideration for the neighbours).Maybe you'd just like to buy one off ebay, or maybe you'd like to look at the pictures of the jet mounted on a scooter, imagine what the ride would be like, and tremble slightly in anticipatory panic...I got a message from the seller:I have a video of it doing approx 70mph down Croft start/finish straight,the moped has now gone as the plastic wheels did not last long !!.

How to make a DIY 'Tickle Me Elmo' style plush toy?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on how to build a 'Tickle Me Elmo' style plush toy, as I am a bit of a newbie.  The concept is that there will be three spots on the plush monster with pressure sensors (or buttons?), namely on his head, belly and nose.  Each of these should have their own set of sounds, about 3 to 5 variations (depending on memory) each.  My aim is that if you press for example the nose, one of the 5 programmed sounds will play.  So basically I need to be able to: * Record up to 15 different sounds, grouped in three categories, and connect them to the appropriate sensor.  * Play one of 5 random sounds in the appropriate category when the sensor is activated  I would prefer if this was 'portable', so I can hide all of the electronics, parts and battery in the plush monster. Is this possible and how big should my power source be?  So, I'm hoping you guys can suggest some electronics, microcontroller and parts for me. Then I can start experimenting! Anyone want to do peer review? Open source product devellopment

I made the pulser pump 20 years ago. (A low tech trompe airlfit pump combination to use low grade water power.It never attracted scientific research funding and never got tested because it is simple and doesn't produce electiricity.I put up an instructable about how to make a model but nobody has made one.Last year I made the "mechanical mathematician" which is a new simple device to allow people to make moulds for parabolic dishes from cob or mud.The same constraints apply and official science will never check it out.This year, there is the tracking solar accumulator, the clock based dripper tracker and the 2 bucket dripper tracker. (Guess I am on a bit of a roll because I needed solutions to make the solar tracking accumulating barbecue a reality.)Official science will not be interested in this either.It is all very low tech stuff. Cheap simple trackers have been identified by solarcooking.org as an important part of getting solar cooking widely introduced. The clock based tracker especially could change things a whole lot for many people. It can be cheap and accurate enough to provide all day semi-automatic solar cooking. I have adapted a few clocks for this but there are probably many models on the market and you might find the ideal one or a better way of adapting one to help make better trackers for solar cookers.It takes years for new (even appropriate technology) to be introduced.Please help these things get introduced much faster by making some of them yourselves.And if you already have made some, please post them! Do not be afraid of doing a bad job. Places like the full belly group would be good to post your stuff or video or text responses to my utube videos.I will happily take down my instructables if someone posts better versions! Talking about my Summer

I have to admit that I was skeptical before starting my Residency at Instructables. I never felt comfortable calling myself a "Maker" and here I was, walking into the belly of the beast at Pier 9. I felt like the term "Maker" was starting to read as cold, technical, robotic and...frankly...stuff really geared towards young boys. I felt as though I was coming into the program as a spy, an outsider looking to infiltrate and be critical of the hype around 3D printing. My project was really my attempt to talk openly about how I felt about these things in a way that people who design and use these machines might take notice. I was expecting to walk into an office full of dudes that wanted to make crazy things just because they could but I was created by quite another experience. The other AiRs were all interesting, questioning, infiltrating. The entire company was full of creative, open-minded, artsty folk and I can't tell you how good it felt to be in the electronics lab one day with all these different amazing and creative women coming in and out. I end my residency (the full-time part anyway) with a different attitude and the realization that people are pretty open-minded, excited and down-right nice! I never imagined people would go to the lengths they did just to help see the project along and it felt great to help and encourage others to see their ideas though. I think I leave the summer with a few new friends. On my presentation day, I felt like I wanted people to sign my year-book - it's that kind of place.   My favorite thing about the residency was also made the residency difficult. The space and people are so interesting and engaging that conversations start all the time. It's so great, but also makes it really hard to get work done! There is so much going on that its hard to stay on top of what people are working on - especially with the residents that aren't around everyday. It would be interesting to find ways to facilitate feedback and collaboration in different ways. We do an exercise in a class I help with at Berkeley where people put their projects on the wall and the other students add post-its with feedback. Maybe if we had a wall like that in the Air-ea it could be a way to keep tabs of all the work and also give short snippets of feedback without interrupting someone's flow. It wouldn't be a way to replace other ways of sharing what we're working on, but a sounding board for just quick, "have you seen X" kind of ideas.  I can't say thank you enough. I had a great, productive summer and I'm excited to be sticking around for a bit longer and seeing the new AiRs that come in and out. I would (and have) recommend the program to anyone - it was a really wonderful experience!

Help Build a Giant Inflatable Instructables Robot

Can you keep a secret?For the Austin Maker Faire in October, I'm hoping to build an 8-foot tall inflatable Instructables Robot. I want it to be easy to find the Instructables booth.For his wedding, Saul, built an inflatable elephant using many of the techniques from inflatable kite design and papercraft. There's a lot of CAD work required, and since I know there are some people here much better at Rhino and Blender than me, I'm asking for help. If we can pull it off, you'll get the joy of having something you designed be made very large.Here's the process and where you can help: 1) creating a model of the robot that is appropriate for cutting in fabric, sewing together, and inflating. chooseausername did a brilliant job here, but the model has too many polygons, and just reducing the number of polygons in his model results in something that doesn't quite work.So first, I need a model of the robot that is less than 1000 polygons while still retaining the robot's personality. Also, since it will be inflated, the robot's wheels should be retracted (its legs should just be cylinders of the same height as its legs plus wheels). We can print on the fabric, so the line on its belly doesn't need to be physical, but its buttons, eyes, ears, and antennae should stick out as they normally do; no need for individual fingers. Make sure all the normals point outward in the model.Saul isn't quite ready to share his CAD files, so I've included screenshots of his elephant as an example. The full grey elephant has 1000 polygons. 2) modifying the model to account for real-world limitations and to make it easy to import into Pepakura Designer. As the elephant is symmetrical, Saul cut it in half, split out various body parts -- ensuring that they exactly fit back together on the vertices of the polygons (seam lines for sewing), -- and made some part of the ears a single piece of fabric which would not inflate. In the robot's case, we would probably split the legs, body, head, and ear-and-antennae assemblies. The antennae will probably need to be a slight larger diameter than they normally are. Since the robot isn't symmetric, we'll keep it whole. 3) using Pepekura to create panels4) arranging the panels, adding seam allowances, and sewing instructions.5) repeating steps 1 - 4 to create the bladders for inflation with a model that's slightly bigger than the skin.6) getting a factory to cut and sew everything together.As you can see, step 1 is the most important part. Instructables Pizza Off 2008

I turned 25 this past week and celebrated my Birthday by organizing something that I've wanted to do for a long long time - a Pizza Off! A Pizza Off is an event where the participants order as many pizza pies as possible from as many different pizzerias as possible, bring them all to a central location at the same time, (Instructables HQ of course) and then eat them all and test which ones they like best! It's not something that you can do on your own, do to limitations of space, time and belly, so I was grateful when the entire Squid Labs community decided that this sounded like an awesome idea to them as well.The rules were simple (taken from the original email announcement):You must bring a pie with you. Think of it as a ticket for entry - if you plan on partaking, you've got to have a pie. We (as in the royal I) will allow sharing of one pie per two people. Ideally each person would bring their own pie, but I'm no tyrant.Your pizza must be from your favorite SF pizza joint. The pie you bring says something about who you are, so drive the extra mile to the place that's a little further, but twice as good. Each and every person in this building is beautiful, and your pizza should be too.You and your pie must arrive promptly at Instructables HQ at 1:00.You can bring whatever type of pizza you like, from whatever pizza joint you think is best. Ideally we'd all get plain cheese pies so we could truly compare, but if you've got to have something fancy on your pie, rock out.This event is all about two things: pizza and excess, so if you're thinking, oh I don't really need to bring a pie, it will be too much food...I'll just eat some pizza and stand around the table - you're wrong. This event only works if we hit critical pizza mass, so I'm counting on each and every one of you to help.When Tuesday rolled around, we ended up having 15 different pies from 13 different pizzerias! There were gourmet pizza pies from local worker owned bakery Arizmendi, traditional Italian cheese pies from North Beach, deep dish pies from San Francisco and East Bay favorite Zachary's, thin crust brick oven pies from Pizzeria Delfina and even Indian food pizza - which actually turned out to be an awesome flavor explosion!I almost made it "round the pizza world", but then some late entries showed up and the crusts caught up with me. There was a huge happy turnout, plenty of ravenous mouths, delicious pizza of all kinds and we all lived to tell the story of the first ever Pizza Off - all in all I'd call it a huge success!For anyone who doesn't already know, I love NY style pizza, and in my opinion, the best NY slices in San Francisco are from Arinell's on Valencia, so that's where I got my pie from. Everyone had their own favorites though, so I won't presume to report on any definitive results from the testing. I will say though that there's a pizza type for everyone, and I am never ceased to be amazed by the magic and wonder of Pizza.We're planning on having future Food Offs testing out other ubiquitous tasty foods. Can you make this game?

I am working on a game last 7 years. I need coders for making this game. I will just give you game idea, you will do the job and you will gain the money. I am played all of games and watching game videos everyday. So game designing is my job, you just read my idea. This game will be a turn based strategy, MMO, open world, crafting, starving, pvp, pve, dungeon blah blah game. I cant make this game as a board game bcause it is too complex and requires calculations. So it cant be funny as a board game bcause causes headache. This game has an unique combat system and strange classes and races like turtle, rhino, ninja, runner, mantis...... So you can play as everything. Some characters can fly, swim, run; depends on what you are playing as. Every turn everybody moves at same time. After that everybody attacks to each other at same time. And cycle repeats. You can order to your character "be that much near to target" and it always tries to be that much near to enemy. Server does this calculation automaticly. Lets see what i designed: CYBER Cyber is a robot looks like human but its made all of steel. So its metalic gray colored. Its dark. It is a serial killer. Hates everything, even itself. He is male but he have no gender. His strongest attack is COMET CANNON. Causes a explosion which will kill the target and damage the who arounds it. Cyber can kill its friends while shooting stuff. ZERO POINT is stronger than Comet Cannon and if you shoot it you will lose all of your HP so this spell consumes HP; its deals same damage to everyone in explosion and this spell always deals damage but enemies will divide damage with their FLE so enemies with high FLE will take less damage. After Zero Point; damaged tiles will damage to who stay on them with heat. GATLING GUN spell deals damage with bullets. Damage will be increased every turn but its MP cost will also increase. You cant move while shooting with Gatling Gun. Also nothing will miss you while you using this spell but %100 of your FLE will become DMG. And your movespeed will become your HIT but only half of it. Also while using this noisy spells your hiding will decrease so enemies can see you from even more faraway. Cyber uses bullets and rockets while using its spells and it gets out of ammo. Ammo will refill 10 turns after an empty turn(nothing attacks you and you attack to nothing). Gatling Gun deals area damage so you can shoot many targets at same time. PAILDRAMON GUNS: If you still didnt mention all of Cyber spells are stolen from digimon and gunslinger of Ragnarök online so this skill is same. So he takes rifles from inside of his calfs and shoot the enemy. You cant use this spell if you moved this turn so you cant move. You can shoot the target until miss it so this spell can be used again after you used it if it hits target. It has more hit than Gatling Gun and it can only shoot 1 target. TWIN STINGERS: you shoot 2 stingers from your nipples. Its a divided attack but stingers must be locked to same target. If they miss target, next turn they will try to hit it again. Enemy can attack to stingers for destroying them but stingers have 0 HP and %500 of your FLE also you must destroy stingers 1 by 1. ROCKET RAIN: using this spell causes you to use all of your ammo. You release all of your firepower as mini stingers. They will randomly attack every enemy they can reach. Missed stingers will hit each other and get destroyed. This attack have high HIT but low DMG. ROCKET STRIKE: you shoot a giant rocket from your arm. Its most basic attack of cyber but it costs too much MP and ammo and have low HIT, but still great for dealing damage to 1 enemy and killing full damage build noobies. PUNCH CANNON: cyber can longer his arms for punching enemy. Really stupid but requires no ammo; also it is ranged. JET BLOW: cyber flies really fast by using his jets and punches enemy from its belly. Bcause of he is so badass, blood comes out from enemy’s body. This spell gets used for reaching enemy and starts melee fight. PUNCH: you punch the enemy. If you dont miss, you can punch next turn. You can only punch three times in a combo, so after that Punch goes cooldown. Bcause of his Punches reducing targets FLE for next turn and dealing massive damage and also dealing damage to targets MP; its Punches consumes too much MP. If you can Punch enemy 3 times after each other; 3rd punch will make enemy unable to move. ENERGY SHIELD: the robot creates an energy field like every mechs doing in Sci-Fi movies so why not? When enemy attacks you it will hit your MP with multiplied by %150 damage. If you turn off your shield you will lose all of your MP and MPR, HPR for next turn and you will gain +%50 HIT, +%50 FLE. The turn after that turn your MP will comeback so you can use your spells again. Also shield will turn off when you reach 0 MP. Than next 2 turns you cant turn on your shield. LIGHTNING JOLT: if you use this spell after turning off Energy Shield you will deal +%50 more damage. And your unexist mana can be consumed for this skill. You shoot lightning which one deals damage to all enemies. If there is less enemy it will deal more damage. This lightning will firstly damage enemy’s FLE for next turn and if it can make FLE 0, than will deal damage HP. LIGHTNING CHARGE: It can only destroy both players MP when it used turn after when Energy Shield turned off manually. You rush to the enemy and punch it. Punch throws enemy to back based on your base speed. If you use same spell after shield off, it will not push enemy but will destroy enemy’s MP by destroying your MP. When one of you reach 0 MP, that event ends. This spell also will deal damage. METAL FORM: you already made of metal but you still want to go in metal form. Metal form is a buff will affect you for next many turns. That buff increases your AMR. Its just that. Increases your AMR for many turns. WASTE: when you die, your remaining ammo will deal damage to enemies in range. All of enemies will take random amount of damage but total damage is always same. BURST SHOOT: you shoot the target with a flamming bullet. Its just that. ARM CANNON: You shoot something unkown but also this attack always missing. When it hits, it deals too much damage for its mana cost. It may hit another random target. Sometimes it causes an explosion and hits many targets. RAINBOW CANNON: you shoot your strongest cannon three times for shooting targets. If three of them hit, it is better than Comet but mostly 1 of them miss. Base values of Cyber(elements will be added when game ends): 3 DMG 1 HIT 0,5 FLE 3 AMR 15 HP 0,5 HPR 10 MP 1 MPR What elements Cyber use? Melee(MLE), Ranged(RNG), MAGnetic, EXPlosive, BuLLet, PLAsma BLoW, WAVe, WiND, HOT, FiRE Sense’s of Cyber: %100 SEE %200 hEAR %200 HEaT %200 MAGnetic Cyber cant fly or swim, bcause of that he has 4 times more attack range than his movement. Also machines are really great ranged units. But Cyber have no ability for escaping. Cyber’s hiding values are: %50 SML %50 MAG %50 HET %0 EAR %150 SEE %200 IDE %200 SUL Cyber is good for killing low FLE and high AMR and low speed units. Cyber is strong against high DMG units.

Is my book good ?

Well i hate to bother anyone but can you please take some time to read this book i worked hard on ? i spent  countless hours of my free time over the weekend developing the plot and creatures so can you please take some time out to read the whole thing tell me what it needs or what would be good i already am 16 pages into the sequel so tell me if this is good so i can post the sequel ! enjoy Times come by Alby Chapter 1- beginning It was the night I would never forget,the night.......i....the......the last night I would enjoy life. It was spring of 2017 the night air was heavy in my lungs and you could faintly smell the BBQ and charcoal smoke from cookouts that died down hours ago I could here people talking and having a good time but I think my drink I grabbed the wrong beer it was Sarah's it was spiked I never would have noticed who did it at least it wasn't her to drink it. I simply enjoyed the sky line of Chicago filled with sky scrapers and mirror like office buildings it all seemed like a Bokeh picture to me the drug is taking affect on my body I feel dizzy . I hopped on the train, it was empty as for the weather gave a good reason to walk but I needed to get home safely. In about 30 minutes I was home. I clumsily walked up the stairs and almost fell it took about ten minutes before I opened the door, I then plopped down on my bed and ran to the bathroom and regurgitated everything I ate that night. i starred at the ceiling. I saw every detail to the nearest centimeter and then blurry the specks the marks swirled in my vision and I felt weightless for a while. I starred at the clock and noticed it was about 4:00 am and cursed myself for going to that bar with Sarah I threw up all over my bed. I tried to grab the phone to call the paramedics but I fell and hit my head on my night stand. I passed out from the concussion i fell into a deep sleep a very deep sleep. Chapter 2 Change I wiped the crust out of my eyes and felt my head a sharp pain rippled thru my scalp it was a Gash about two inches in length. i walked into the bathroom I pulled the faucet but all that came out was a wisp of air. I snatched a baby wipe and cleaned off my face I cleaned my wound with alcohol the sting ive gotten used to I used to get hurt pretty bad in the army, I got shrapnel in my knee and they sent me home the first year. I noticed a dead silence on the street I thought they probably closed it off for some type of repair. I put on my white tee shirt and noticed its softness and how it fit snug on my semi-muscular figure I was in good shape for a twenty-four year old, my mom would always tell me most of the people in America are fat but I guess she loves to tell stereotypes for what they are. I put on my jeans and not forgetting the belt this time either. I snatched my keys off the kitchen counter and headed for the door. I walked outside and paused too look at the empty streets filled with litter and carnage . My mouth wide open in amazement I asked myself what happened and pondered the different reasons riot,panic,fire what could cause such a mess, I walked towards a police squad car and smelled something rancid I slowly proceeded, I instantly veered back in panic I could not believe what I saw a dead police officer lying face down with half a chunk blown clean off his head. There were pieces of it every where splattered on the windshield and door of the police car and some on the concrete. I instinctively inched towards him and thought to myself that something bad is happening and I need protection. I unhooked his holster off his waist and placed it on mine I pulled off his Kevlar vest and put it on weirdly enough it barely was messy or smelled bad. I checked the pockets of the vest and took out a pair of keys I knew it belonged to his squad car. I first popped open the trunk and saw it glistening in the sun a Ar-15 assault rifle. I picked it up and the memories of my army training it just instantly popped into my mind. I guess it applied the same here, I slung it around my back and walked into the silence. I took out the pistol put in the clip pulled the slide back and switched the safety off and cautiously held it. I believe the gun made me more nervous than whats in the shadows, I walked down the narrow street and saw it the skyline of the city filled with smoke and fire. I stood in anger and confusion my home town ravaged broken and charred blood stained the streets and walls, but why.....why....how could this... I mean what could....d..do such a thing. I walked away in the opposite direction and then cut into an alley way to piss and paused as I heard a roar I looked up and saw a quick glance of the belly of a apache attack craft it quickly zoom by and then another. I looked away and ran out of the alley and then down the street to see what direction they were heading. They sped towards the lake area and then I saw a tiny black object fall horizontally from the choppers belly and it slowly fell, then a explosion. I could feel the vibrations. the explosion ripped the lake area into nothing....nothing..but....but...smoke. My heart skipped a few beats thinking what if the next one falls in this area I quickly broke my daydream and bolted as fast as I could as far as I could until I saw a woman crawling on the concrete she was Moaning and holding her stomach. I came up behind her and asked for help. She turned on her back “ Sarah? Ohh my god sarah are you okay ?” and she held a gun in her hand a Glock 22 model the slide locked all the way back and no clip in the gun. I kicked it out of her and and sprung on her she begged for mercy “albert you have to stay away from me im turning” she saw that I was armed and quickly told me the gun was unloaded and that she was sorry she told me she would do anything just get away from her . I told her “Im not here to hurt anyone I just want to help” I starred at her beautiful figure her perfect face and thin hourglass body but ragged cloths and red eyes from crying. How and what did she go thru that could turn her into such a wreck. She got up and put her arm around my shoulder kissed me on the cheek and passed out. I dragged her to an fenced off alley where there was a mattress I put her down and sat next to her .she hugged me and began to cry she than jumped on top of me “Sarah what are you doing no we cant do this now no!” I told her I will help her but I dont think she understood a word I said. She looked at me in my eyes I could feel her touch my soul, her blue eyes glared in the sun. “i dont want to die alone please” I stood up nervously, I was concerned for her health when suddenly I heard a bang then felt a sharp pain in my leg. I collapsed in agony and saw the cause of my pain a bean bag round I looked up and saw a gas mask wearing figure he shot me with another bean bag round in the knee, from his shot gun he then walked over my numb body and. picked up both bean bag's and threw it aside two people in hazmat gear grabbed Sarah and took off her clothing I screamed “what are you doing to her!!!” they did not acknowledge me they looked at her body like they where searching for something. Her passed out figure limp as a rag doll they removed her pants then her underwear I screamed “No!! you son of a bitch don't do it ill kill you” they studied a bite mark on her upper thigh they made some type of hand signal and left. the soldiers then they came and started pouring gasoline on the mattress and her body. the one with the kriss super V took his cigarette out of his mouth and then flicked it at her it rolled of of her shapely belly and hit the mattress her body bursted into flames and she spasmed and kicked wildly. Then the man pointed it me and said in a British accent “ knock that fuckin Yankee an put em in da ACP double time, thoes hungry bastards are comin” Chapter 3 world gone mad I awoke on a bed in clean clothes and a hair cut. I stood up and walked into the hallway and noticed that this was a hospital. Suddenly a hand grabbed me. “aey where do you think your going ya damn runner rapist” I starred at him & his arrogant look and heavily customized ACR bushmaster. “get the fuck away from me im leaving what ever the hell this place is” he then sprung up and pushed the barrel of his ACR into my neck. “look if you want to get devoured by those runners be my guest buddy but dont go exposing this place to the infection” I looked at him like he was retarded “infection what infection and why the hell is the army bombing populated areas” he looked at me the same way. “ where were you 2 days ago ? There was a virus it was originally H1N1 but it evolved up to 10 times now its got Chicago by the balls and its spreading across the world as we speak turning everyone into animals devouring and ripping people to shreds and then the virus takes over the dead body and brings it back as a runner also know as a fresh undead body that has the ability to run or sometimes sprint god forbid but after 2-4 weeks without food the tissue breaks down from constant use without fuel and they start to get slow and shuffle around” my mind felt overwhelmed I wondered how my parents were doing in Dallas. “so what am I supped to do here but be a waste of space” he grinned. “well you obviously know how to use a weapon and our records say you have been in the military. you cant take care of yourself out there so we will make you part of out kill squad. “kill squad ?” “ohh shit you mean you have never killed or seen any infected yet ? that means your fresh you can be put to good use in our kill team” he told me his name was henry the specialist of his team kill team Charlie-mike. He directed me to the staff sergeant who looked at me and said “well well well we got some fresh meat hope you ready for 3 months of hard core trainin cuz this wont be easy now get yo ass in the garage and clean every APC tire the armory I think the kill teams ran over a little too much runners” 3 Months later........ the training was more rigorous than the basic military stuff a the armory where there was at least a 100 others conversing and grabbing into boxes of gear. Henry took me to the gunny of the armory where he helped me choose my gear. I picked up dragon skin Kevlar with implanted ceramic & alloy inserts. I took some gloves which I cut the fingers of. My boots where the basic digital camo color probably a left over from the war in Iraq which ended several years ago when our president simply drew the troops out. And European troops and some Russians finished off the big time terrorists soon after we heard no more from any our genocidal efforts finally payed off. I went to the weapon stand where I had to fill out a ID sheet to make sure they knew I had training with combat rifles. I chose the ACR which was in stock by the thousands as a gift from the weapon companies to the American army. I pulled all the safety clips and then grabbed a eotech scope out of a box and locked it onto the rail system of the weapon. I attached a mag pull the every one of my carbon strength reinforced clips. The gunny looked at me with a grin and we left for briefing. Chapter 4 things get messy we met up in the garage of the hospital every runner hunter of this kill force a total of 300 men and women in the huge elevated parking complex of the hospital, a general arrived in the elevator his chrome glasses shined in the evening light so did the many badges pinned on his suit which fit his old figure rather awkwardly. he had two formally dressed men with him they both had desert eagles on there side holsters but the general had a FN 2000 slung around his back. it was worn and scratched its polymer body was embedded with and insignia that I did not see so well as it was obscured by the scuffs and grime he looked at us and smiled his mouth opened and he flung his cigar off the ledge of the building he then begun and explained in a dominant voice. “there are 40 spec op Humvee's set up in formation ready to patrol the streets of Chicago you all will be in sector 6 the most dangerous sector of Chicago but no need to worry we have full fledged firepower of 4 APC's which will Carrie your kill team to your objectives take as much time as needed the runners arent going any where. you will clear the sears tower area a hot spot for runners. look all you men and woman, its time to revolt and fight back. its time to say we will not be scared, we will not be intimidated, we will win back our freedom!!” the whole complex light up with cheer. As the two men in formal wear took out PDA's and started directing people to there kill teams the first man shouted “ Chavez,Williams,buck, and,Samson go to APC #1” I quickly advanced thru the crowd to APC 1 I slowed my pace and saw its matte paint job of digital camo and its pop up dillan machine gun turret mounted on top. I pounded on its steel behind and its back door unlatched I stood waiting for the rest of my team I saw all three walking in a line towards the door I saw him ,the man with the kriss super V he smiled at me and said “no fuckin way you tha yankee we picked up in tha alley way you mad cus we killed your little runner girlfriend” I sprung towards him and grabbed his collar and punched him in the stomach then elbowed him in the mouth all the color drained out of his face. “ if you wouldn't of shot me with a fucking bean bag I would of blown your brains out back at the alley” he looked at me and with blood dripping down his mouth “i was just doing my job. welcome to foxtrot 3 by my names john samson you can just call me hunter” I let him go and he limped into the APC then another walked towards me he wore a Grey baklava and tight fitting clothing and a vest that barely covered his chest which awkwardly bulged out he walked towards me and took off the mask. She looked at m surprised face and said “what ? a woman cant be in the military” “well I..I...I just did not expect to have such a high rank personnel on our team” she looked at me and frowend “were both specialists grade one my names Kelly williams” “a heavily armored male in a hijab walked towards me playfully he came up to me and pulled off his hijab he was a African American . “hey specialist now look Im basically here to keep the moral you catch me ? I was in the navy im Ricky buckman Just call me squid now what do you want to go by kid?” I smiled “echo” “nice choice” Albert “echo” chavez I thought in my head I figured that sounds good. We all jumped in the APC while a kill team of rangers in a heavy Humvee with a mounted sentry gun rolled behind us as the whole convoy of kill force 6 prepared for battle. I thought about all my training aim for the head,short controlled bursts a shot anywhere else just stunned them. They move fast so they have to be neutralized if you get bitten or infected kill yourself with the poison capsule that was given or a team mate would do it. I grabbed a Kukri blade off the weapon rack that was provided in the APC I looked at its razor sharp edge its brushed steel surface reflected no light I sheathed it and strapped it to my leg. I caught the eye of Kelly who was fiddling around with the UAV control panel she looked at me and smiled. The APC's lights blinked red prompting us that we are in a hot zone. The APC vibrated as the co pilot took out a pack of runners with the Dillon remote controlled mini gun. We all loaded our weapons and packed up some ammo. Hunter and squid looked at each other and they bumped fists. I put a clip in my ACR and cocked it I turned on the eotech scope and strapped on my helmet and then slid on a black baklava. The APC driver prompted a alarm which was the signal that the door was opening, the big metal door slowly lowered its platform to the ground and we all got out Kelly was the last one out she grabbed that control panel and slid it into her bag she ran out and flipped the close button on the APC. We met up with the four other teams in our sector who already exited there Humvee's. A black Humvee that I never knew was in the convoy rode up and a military adviser jumped out and barked orders like some scared little dog and then jumped back in glad that he wasn't us. He positioned eight snipers on the roof who where each divided into teams of four they zip lined up the roofs and soon each team where picked up by two little bird helicopters the rest of us where on the ground either Humvee calvary hit teams or long range grenade support foxtrot was positioned on the magnificent mile at least it was magnificent. We cautiously walked down the street with another team of 6 watching our back and little birds with snipers covering us and telling us where the nearest pack is. It was empty until we got a report a pack of twenty runners where heading straight for us about 3 blocks away we had about a minute to prepare, snipers took out some and only six broke there steady aim and where 5 feet away, I drew my weapon and just before I could fire a Humvee rammed half the pack of runners over my team shot at there heads to finish them off . I stunted back and fell startled by a runner with broken legs dragging its smelly corpse towards me, my team did not even notice as they where pre occupied with finishing off the pack it grabbed my boot and pulled itself onto my chest I pushed it back and hunter tackled it and shot it once it grazed its ear he then rad up to it and curb stomped its head in over and over, like an egg it crunched under his boot he then walked towards me and picked me up and then our comm's screeched with a danger code: sector red REPEAT SECTOR RED!! this is not a drill!! squid looked at Kelly “OH shit radio the APC radio the APC!!” Kelly hastily radioed the APC and it arrived around the corner ASAP she got in and took the panel out of her backpack all the rangers got back in there Humvee's and formed up a line of vehicle's and the APC was in front we all jumped in and squid popped open 3 of the four combat hatches. We took stance and poked our body's out of the hatches while Kelly was typing away at the panel. “Kelly get us that predator drone NOW!!” “on it Echo..about.....NOW!! get ready for some boom boom boys” she said over the comm a predator drone deployed from a building somewhere and roared across the city's night sky. The little birds shot flares into out immediate area and the military advisor said nervously over the comm “formation green zone ASAP make space for one more hummer!!” his hummer screeched into our circle formation at the middle of the block intersection. We all could hear the uproar and the screaming rage of the Runners it was 9:00 PM and my stomach dropped as runners came at us from every angle swarming in between all the vehicles as we took out as much as we can the advisor yelled. “Break formation head for lane 3 of sector 5 Kelly yelled “but thats a dead end we have no where to go !!” “exactly now MOVE !!” we hastily rammed out way thru the crowd of runners it was easily about 200 to 300 runners we reached the street which was a dead end it was blocked by a collapsed building from all the beach bombing runs. We waited for 5 minutes until we saw it our doom three times as much runners appeared and headed for the convoy. The driver looked bewildered “Get ready im breaking position” he advanced the APC towards the crowd its massive tires gripping the rubble and concrete so agile and quick. He opened fire the Dillon mini gun until there was not one round left. the APC swiveled madly like a dog chasing its tail, all the blood and body matter stuck to the tire made it impossible to control. The whole interior rocked forward on impact with the flipped car. suddenly a screech and the APC flipped over on its side. the runners ignored the APC and went for the group of Humvee's ripping the rangers out that had not locked there Humvee door and devouring them. We herd the screams despite layer after layer of Kevlar and Armour of the APC. My radio started to squawk. “ Pindad Panser down repeat,flipped on its side calling in little bird for support !! bring in UH-60 shadow for medivac ASAP!” I groaned in pain the impact was hard,i could taste blood in my mouth my world was spinning. my team mates did not move they where all laying face down. I soon passed out Chapter 5 delta crimson “Delta crimson GO GO GO !!” I awoke in a sweat, I felt normal again I wiped my blood crusted face off. I leaned up and saw them. “Squid Kelly Hunter Your all alive !” hunter smiled “the crowds not givin up. Hurry mate we got to get outta this APC or crimson is just gonna have to save us” Crimson was an elite rescue squad of some of the best rescue force members in the military marines,rangers,green berets, you name em they can save you. Suddenly we heard the roar of helicopters. Then the door of the APC light up and blew of its hinges a soldier in a crimson baklava shined a light me and my team he latched two metal hooks onto our APC and then the helicopter lifted us into the air, this vehicle the best attack helicopter crafted by the engineer crew over at Hudson base they called it the Shadow because thats all it was, a quick killer in the night. A man made machine manufactured to kill and thats what it was best at. I broke for the chopper and jumped in then squid then Kelly it started to take off right before it left ground hunter grabbed the bay door and climbed in. “forgetting something ?” He threw me my ACR bushmaster which started to look like the generals FN 2000 it was scuffed and marked in every crack and crease. A crimson medivac specialist handed us some refreshments and snacks he said he picked it up at his last raid. He gave me some meds, adrenalin shots use them as a last resort of energy he said. I looked at squid who was holding his dog tag “ man echo you see how that APC flipped on us I almost crapped my pant's” I laughed at the joke even if its not funny my team needs the moral. I looked it the pilot he caught my stare. “where going to the main objective” I sighed and looked away hunter looked at me and made some type of hand signal. “hey Kelly you think we could of died back there” “easily hunter luckily the runners did not find our APC interesting” I looked over at Kelly who was looking at the cracked screen of the control panel. “hey Kelly what all did you use that panel for” “i saved the whole platoon with this thing while you where taking a nap, now its gone and base is a long fly away. The screen broke when the APC flipped. And the predator drone crashed without me controlling it” “damn, nothing good ever lasts long does it” “well echo thats not true your still alive aren't you ?” I we both smiled and when the happiness broke it was back to work. chapter 6 Raid The shadow landed on the roof of a building about 3 blocks away from objective R.R.T.R (runner ruled territory raid) our forces had to kill all runners and take back the sears tower. Kelly was stationed on the roof with hundreds of other snipers .with her barret M82 which ripped into 2 to 3 runners at a time with its large caliber amour piercing rounds. Military advisors sent Ground troops they marched the streets for the main attack on the R.R.T (runner ruled territory). Soldiers of all pact creed and faction marched side by side. the ISF (Iraqi Security Forces) the IRA (Irish Republican Army) even the CIA and DEA forces were marching along with whole police precincts including the bulk of the U.S military. This battle was inevitable and we are going to win.

Damaged disc(s) in the lower back - what to do and what not ;)

I got diagnosed with a damaged L5 and L6 disc in my lower back about 8 years ago and I thought writing about my experience might helps others facing the same problems. Keeping your back straight when lifting or moving heavy things was a thing I already learned and followed during my school times and as you might have guessed it helped to keep my back healthy - at the expense of my knees... But the knees are a different story, today I want to help you understand lower back problems caused by damaged or bulging discs and how this will affect your life. For me it began with a little shock. One day I got out of bed, wanted to grab something I dropped and got stuck half way up. Knowing that there are some nerves that can cause the same issue and that a simple injection will fix me I called a cab to be dragged laying down on the back seat to my GP. As you might have guessed his diagnosis was a bit worse than what I wanted to hear... Many painful hours and some scans later it was confirmed that my L5 and L6 disk have collapsed on one side and started to push on the nerves next to it. Funny side not that I never really checked was that my doc said not everyone has a L6 disk... Anyways, as with most first "accidents" involving your lower back the so called recovery was long and painful. Sure the painkillers help to numb the worst, the anti inflammatory stuff covers some pain too but actually I did not want the full pain free package deal. Pain is the bodies way to let you know something is wrong, so I kept the pain medication at a level where I got that information when making a wrong move... The first 6 months I was literally confined to my bed, the shower and the toilet. I tried to keep a position with the least amount of pain for as long as possible and for obvious reasons was not too happy that my body not only required food intake but also the disposal of the waste products - getting out of bed and onto the toilet meant experiencing huge amounts of pain every time. But after those 6 months I started to adjust, to the pain as well as what my limited body was now capable of in terms of movement. Needless to say that all this time of not doing anything really meant my scale started to scream tripple digets at me one day... Luckily around the same time my pain levels went to a level that allowed my to walk around 500-600 at slightly slower speeds than normal before the pain got too much. My doctor also got quite concerned about my blood work and body weight recommending to loose a lot if I every intent to get back to a more normal life. So I started to walk several times a day, no matter how bad the weather was, just a bit up and down the street. The distance got longer, the fitness a bit better and the pain levels a bit lower too. Using my old weight lifting belt to keep the back supported helped me a lot during these times, especially when driving or doing housework. During those times I was still on 6-8 panedine forte tablets (paracetamol and codein) plus 2-4 tablets of 20mg oxicontin and not happy about the last anyway. Despite the added levels of pain I started to reduce the level of oxicontin and started to exercise more. My focus was getting the core muscles stronger and to get better support for my back. Also started riding my bike again, although I had to replace it for a bigger model to allow me a more upright position with less stress on the lower back. The kilos started to tumble very slowly but I was already quite proud when I got bak to 90kg. :( Good thing was that I got motivation to continue as every kg I lost and every little bit more on distance I got out of my walks and rides without getting too painful also meant that my average pain level went down too. Two years after it all happened I got rid of the oxicontin completely and reached the 80kg mark. My doc was happy too, my blood work looking good but of course he still suggested to loose a few more kg. Being able to move around again also meant being able to work again and with that came more food, less exercise and a lot more stress. I did manage to hold my 80kg but after about 6 months or working I noticed my back problems started to limit me again. My back belt covered for me and I was able to keep going a while longer but in the end I got hit by another attack on my back. The diagnosis was not good at all as now on top of the pain goind through the back and leg I also hab numbness and a feeling like ants crawl over the leg and chew on it every few mm. As with most lower back "revenges" this one only needed strong pain killers for a few weeks until I was back to something more normal in terms of pain and movability. Sadly the ongoing side effects did not go away the way they did the first time. This meant especiall finding the right position to sleep with the least amount of pain was becoming a nightmare on it's own. Either you got pins and needles keeping you awake, you lost your feeling in the leg to the point where it becomes useless or the pain in the back is just stabbing you all the time. Starting some projects here on Instructables kept my mind busy and gave me some welcome distraction from the daily routine. Eventually I manged to find a job again that allowed me to have enough different movements with only a bit of lifting so things started get back to normal. My doc put me on some amitriptyline to help with the pain at night and although it took some time to get used to the stuff it really started to help after about two weeks. The job was only for a fixed term but it gave me back some confidence that not all is bad or lost. Life went on and I actually manged to get down to just 75kg and only used some painkillers once or twice a week if it was really bad. Then, a few weeks back I started to notice that the top of my foot and the outside of my leg felt different to touch, especially in the shower with some brush or rough sponge. Not being happy already I agreed to some new scans to check if the discs started to cause problems or if the nerves are just inflamed. You might have guessed already, the scan confirmed that my two discs desintegrated further putting more pressure on the already suffering nerves. With the "help" of some quite strong anti inflammatory stuff, cortisone and other meds my doc managed to get me back to "normal" but he also informed me that this won't last forever. The current outcome (without surgery but more on that later on) I have two choices to keep going: a ) I continue with pain killers and other meds to keep the problems at bay. b ) I limit myself to basically not doing anything involving the movemnt of my lower back, keep to a strict calory intake and hope for the best. The first option won't do me any good in the long run except liver, kidney and digestive problems. The second option will allow me some sort of a normal life at the expense of never finding a job to support me again. So once again we soldier on knowing that it will only make things worse as giving up and relying on social services is no option for me. Hoping that you might just had your first encounter with lower back injuries and pain I will give some advise on the things that helped my most so that you might not have to suffer as much I did and still do. So read on please... Diagnosed with a damaged or bulged disc in the lower back - what does it acutally mean? If you check all the available images of the human skelleton you will quickly notice one thing: Our lower back is not really straight and not designed to carry a lot weight when it is put on the wrong way or direction. Noone with a sane mind would use a support beam shaped like that but the human body adapted to this problem caused by changing from using all four limbs to walking on just two legs. The muscles and tendons in our back work in such a way that they support the fragile construction of discs and bones that keep us upright. Sadly modern life, personal decisions and only too often a busy work shedule prevent us from using our body the wa we should. Be it too much lifting, being far too short for your weight or simply laziness the factors causing our muscle to degrade are too many to count. But once you are in the worst pain you ever felt and your doc tells you that there are damaged discs you suddenly wish you had it all done differently years ago - trust me, I have been there and I have done it ;) Or it might be like in my case that a healthy and fit person just cracks one or more discs for no obvious reason. Either way it means you have to change your life to be able to keep going. Pain killers help to ignore the problem and pretend all is good but they should be used with great care as most are highly addictive and the long term side effects are no fun either. The one thing you must never forget is although being a life sentence it must not mean you will be crippled forever! What can I do once it happened to help the pain and my sanity? Nerve pain is one of the worst pains there is and there are only two more or less working medications to deal with it. The first meds are opiates to literally numb the pain but due to source of the pain very high levels are required until the body adapted to deal with the wrong pain information. The second group of meds that offer help and that are often used together with pain killers are old sty anti depressants like the try-cyclic (was that right?) amitriptyline. Back in the days they were not really good for the advertised job but one of the common side effects was how they worked on the pain centers of the brain. In much lower dosages as used to treat depressions these meds help the brain to deal with the pain caused by the damaged or pinched nerves. As a long term solution they should be prefered over opiates so that the strong pain killers are only taken when really needed. If you are anything like me than not getting enough sleep over weeks on end will take a toll on your mood. So being able to sleep at least a few hours in one go is a real thing to aim for unless you prefer to harm your body with pain killers. What is there to help with the pain so you can sleep? I know that you now already think you tried it all and that nothing good comes out of here but keep reading as you might be surprised... The first thing that jumps into mind when it comes to sleeping is a bed - be it you by yourself or with a partner. And here also is the first point to improve! In many countries a bed for two persons has one bad feature: A single mattress! Any movement from the person next to you is transfered more or less onto your body - you don't want that! So if you own a big bid that you share with someone think about investing into a bed with seperated matresses and support frames. That brings us to the mattress itself. A lot of people think being soft and flexible is a prefered thing, not so much if you have back problems. You want enough support to keep the back straight without everything feeling like you sleep on wooden floorboards. Keep in mind though that when changing from soft matress to something much firmer you will need to adjust. Really the best option is to seek professional advise in a bedding studio or similar. And no, you don't have to go to the most expensive place to buy a mattress, you just try them out, get expert advise and use that new knowledge to find a suitable mattress to fit the budget. With no offence meant: If you are over the normal weight you really want to loose the excess and that means selecting a new matrress on your weight goal and not on your current weight! It is also good to have adjustable supports under the mattress itself, this way you choose a thinner and bit softer mattress but still get the firmness your back requires - again seeking proffessional advise on the right combinations is highly recommended here! Ok, your bed is sorted but still there is that nagging pain in certain positions or the tingling in your leg preventing you to go to sleep. Believe it or not but what you do before you go to bed affects how you feel when you hit the sack. So sitting like a bag full of water in front of your TV until just manage to crawl into bed won't do you any good. Same for having your dinner and hour or two before bedtime... What does help is to move your body and to burn a few kalories! If it helps you use a weight lifting belt but just a walk around the block with a little bit of bending and flexing will get the tension out of muscles. A nice partner giving you a proper massage might help too but I doubt you will get one every night ;) And before you start to complain: Yes, I know there are times where simply can't do any exersise as you will be happy to make it to the toilet or to make some dinner. For those times and especially during times of experiencing higher than normal pain level ther is something you can do to ease the pain. Some doctors will tell you but a lot of them wont: Cold actually helps to numb the pain and the symptoms like tingling, pins and needles or the constant stabbing when you made a slightly wrong move. But you need to apply the cold in the right way to get the benefit! The key here is timing. Using real ice in a suitable wrapper, so no vegetables or meat, you apply the cold where the damage is - not where the pain is! You want to cool down the area around the damaged discs for about 5 to max 10 minutes. Put the icepack back and repeat every hour! Nothing will happen after the first two or three round but then you will notice improvement - how much depends on the individual and extend of the damage of course. When I have bad days I usually start around mid-day and keep going every hour until either the pain is gone or it is time to drag myself to bed. The worst you can do is o apply heat! A warm (not hot!) bath can help to ease some muscular tension but hot packs or heat lamps will make your pain get worse quickly. Just imagine and inflammation somehwere else, the area is already hot and painful so you really don't want to add more heat, do you? ;) What can be done to keep mobile and improve? As said earlier the key is support for the damaged areas and of course a limitation in movements that put additional stress on the damaged dics - this includes weight, be it from your own body in terms of excess fat or simply be lifting things! You will have times of no pain and where you think you are 20 years younger again but never use that as an excuse to think your discs have improved! Once damaged they stay damaged and everything putting more stress on you dsic(s) will make things worse. A friend of mine loves to play golf - if you have back problems you want to find a different hobby! Coming from three digits I can tell you without being offensive in any way that being fat means having problems that you don't want to add to your list caused by a bad back! So like it or not you really need to loose all the excess you can find wobbling around your body! For me every single kg I lost was a step forward to being more fit and being able to more things for longer before my pain got too much. And no, there is no excuse for keeping those kilos if are able to leave the bed for more than a few hours. Turst me, you will feel better, need far less medication and like yourself much better once the benfits of less weight kick in! Exercise is the key to getting your life back to a more or less normal level! If you are a "first offender" than you have a good chance that a change of habbit and maybe job will make sure it stays a single incident and that you can have a pain free life after the initial recovery! Getting a higher core strenght and overall fitness level helps your body to heal but most importantly gives you the option to gain muscles where needed to support your back. You might think there is nothing you can do if you are in pain and can't really move anyway but if you do then you are wrong. I am not a personal trainer but I found a lot of ways to use my muscles without using my back for it... There is enough info on the web for exercise methods without any training gear and if you think "really hard" you might notice you can use a lot of positions to exercise your arms and legs without stressing you back ;) And even for the back you can do good without damage: If you lay flat on your belly you just slightly lift your arms and legs off the ground - this will need the support of the muscles in lower back! No need to actuall lift anything high, just enough to only slightly bend your back up - you might not even notice any bending at all. What you don't want is exercise like running, jogging or even contact sports, really nothing that might force your back to move more than what is possible without stressing your discs... Better fitness and more strenght means you will get better flexibility and movablity but never let that fool you into thinking the damage is gone! I can not stress enough than even if you don't need medication and feel fine a single wrong move can make all null and void! What are the options if despite loosing weight and excercise my pain is not going away or syptoms get worse? Well, we can ignore it, we can hope it all goes away but the sad reality for most is that sooner or later you reach the point where the damage is too much too handle. The first one to tell you that your lower back is now due for a pit stop is your foot. The pain might be more than what you ever experienced the pins and needles might drive you mad but as long as it just that you are fine, really :( For me it was during some light gradening when I got my "first hit" so to say. I brushed it off thinking I tripped over something that got kicked away while I struggled to keep my balance. A few days later I noticed that I had to put some extra efford to prevent my toes from scraping the floor while walking. It was there when I also realised that most of the feeling on top of my foot was gone. Same story for the outside of my calf by the way... For me, thanks to a non working medical system and no private health cover the story ends here... Since you might have more luck: Modern medicine has gone a long way when it comes to minimal invasive operations and they are the key to performing operations that otherwise would be impossible or require months of recovery. For the "treatment" of damaged discs in the lowest part of the spinal area the old conventional treatment was to fuse the bones together using some steel or titanium rods. To give the patient relief the dmaged disc was more or less mutilated to free the damaged nerve(s). Several weeks of bed rest and great loss in movement was the price to pay for less pain. Today we are much further and can use micro instruments to perform operations deemed impossible only a few years ago. One of the operations with the greatest and fastest recovery rates is actually quite smart if you think about it: A small portion of bone is removed to give more room for the nerve and to aid in the healing - without fusing the bones! The next step is remove the part of the disc that is bulging out - without removing the strong support layers around it, only the mashed up bits are taken away. The patient is literally pain free ( from the back pain) right after the operation. Healing takes about 2-3 weeks but by then even the pain from the cut bones will be gone. Some health insurers see these operations as a means to get a person back to work and into a normal life, so they support it. Others use simple math and decide pain killers are cheaper... In any case you should seek professional advice from your doc and health care provider before it is too late! Diagnosed and operated early can mean you get the option to have an almost normal life again, or at least a few years of being able to enjoy life much more than before the operation. There are of course risks involved and an opration might not be an option for every case but knowing your options and what form of treatment might be available for you can be reall life changing... Ok, but what's the worst that can happen to me if a simple operation is no longer an option? One of the first things you will notice after loosing control and feeling for your foot is a more or less contant need to go the toilet. Despite having an empty bladder or just using the toilet minutes ago you can develop the feeling that you really must go the toilet again. Sadly this is only the beginning... If things get worse you can loose control over your bladder and bowel. Simply put it means you no longer control the muscular tension required to keep you vital openings closed when required. Usually at this point your doctor will recommend to operate one way or the other. For you, if affected, this means you have to decide between the risk of an operation that might only last for a few months or years or wearing adult nappies... If you already had one or more operation or the damage to the disc(s) is too severe it can mean that there is no other option but to fuse the bones into place to prevent further damage and allow for some healing. But trust me, for your doc to even consider an operation you need to loose all the weight you can! What are my limitations after having my back bones fused together? Well, as it reads you will be fused together, meaning you level of movement will be severly limited. It also means you beep all the time at the airport security or when entering a court or other place with metal detectors - but that is the least of the worries I guess... The main problem after such operations is getting back to a life as normal as possible. You get a lot of help in rehab and will learn what you can and can't do, plus of course how to keep you fit despite these limits. Some people cope really good with the new limitations but others struggle a lot. This especially true if before the person was really active and doing a lot in terms of sport and outdoor activities. Learning to adapt to the changes allows you have many more years without too much pain or limitations. Sure, Golf is out of the question, playing soccer or riding a normal bike too but life goes on and being a part of it is always better than just looking at it through your bedroom window ;) In any case giving up should not be an option for you! No matter how bad it looks when the pain is too much, there are always more good days than bad days ahead of you!
