Hi Everybody, I have made a series of LED lights on my bicycle spokes, for driving at night. I use a 9 volt battery with 9 pieces of white LED 3.3 volts, which I connect each with a 330 ohm resistor 9 pieces 1/4 watt. its durability is approximately 30 hours later the lights dimmed, is there any way to be more durable ?

I name my bikes, usually for something wrong with them. Rusty, well, obvious. Lefty, it pulls to the left. Tiny, well, it's tiny. Some have more thoughtful names, like Phoenix, a bike I found in a ditch that was apparently thrown from a moving pickup. The fourth definition of the word Phoenix at this dictionary is a person or thing that has become renewed or restored after suffering calamity or apparent annihilation. Do you name your bikes?

Hello there, people. First post here, been a member for a long time but only used to read instructables, but now im in need of help with a project. Im making a mudguard for my bicycle and im using a plastic folder. I know it sounds a little strange, but ive seen a lot of tutorials for mudguards made from some type of plastic, soft or hard. For example the ones made from a plastic cutting board. The first photo is of the folder and my question to you guys is, how do i make creases on the folder like the ones shown in picture 2. creases that help you fold the folder in those certain places.

Ok, i wanna take a old bike and put an electric motor on it, with a solar charged battery. what i wanna know is, what are my options on motors if i wanna use recycled components? can i use a motor from a; washer, dryer, blower fan, ect? i would like to be able to have something i can get around town with(not assisted)

With my customization of my bike, I just have to have a speedometer. But, I haven't found a single place on the Internet showing how to make one, just how to buy one.I know that speed = distance/time. I was thinking, since this is going on my bike, I could measure the circumference of the rim and hook up a circuit that would have a something (motion detector?) on the front brakes and another something on the rim, the one on the brakes counting the number of RPMs. I could have it hooked up to a timer, and it would have a digital read-out, which would calculate the speed, that updates every certain number of RPMs.Has anyone ever built a speedometer, or if not, do you think something like that would work?Thanks!

Hey hey, so the other day i came up with a way that i thought might work well for a bicycle security...thing. anyways, since just about all bikes are made of metal, except the carbon ones, and metal conducts electricity, what if you had some way of making your bike, electrically charged? i guess (i dont know all the proper words heh) so if a person comes up to your bike and wants to take it, at some point in the process of taking your bike, he would come in contact with some metal part and get shocked. i thought if you made it properly, and made the shock strong enough, it would be a great way to keep your bike safe...cause i know if i went to take someones bike, and all of a sudden i get zapped all of a sudden every time i touch the bike, i would not want that bike! i figured you'd need some batteries with enough voltage to give him a good shock, enough to make him not want to take the bike, but not so much that you would kill him...that obviously would not be good. but i'd imagine that more powerful batteries might be to big, and not fit anywhere on your bike. i thought that maybe you could hide everything in the seat tube after you take the seat post out, and maybe have a hidden switch somewhere on the bike so you could turn it off. im sure there's more issues i havent thought over, just an idea, and im far from an electrical expert, so i dont know how rubber shoes might ground the person, or how you would go about wiring it, and other stuff like that. i just wanted to see what some people here thought about it, and if it is even possible for me to do

I want ot make a moped, but theres NO WAY im buying those expensive mofo, kits for $200 when i could just as easily build one, i figure all it needs is a motor of 50cc or less(state law says)i figure, a weed wacker is usually ranged from 20CC to 50cc ill try that but so far the most i have found is 32cc, i also figure it will require a chain and a drive train which i can fabricate from another bike. i hear chainsaws are very powerful like 40CC + range which sounds good but im just not sure about de-constructing one of those, if anybody has had any experience with motor bicycle please help

I ride in the San Jose Bike Party. One of the things that I like is the music. People with all sorts of boom boxes, dj systems, and lighting mounted all over their bikes or trailers. I would like to build something like that and I am checking out the many interesting projects listed here. I am wondering though, is it possible to speed the music up or down to match the bike speed, maybe with a magnet on the wheel and a sensor on the frame? I don't know if it would be a good idea, but the thought of a dirge when we are slow and chipmunks when we are fast is just funny to me.

For a million dollars you can get a bike with the lowest air resistance in the world and hopefully get a better shot at the Olympics. That's what bike manufacturer Koga is claiming for this custom ride designed for Dutch rider Theo Bos. Oddly enough, they make the claim that since it has only one speed and no brakes it is one of the most difficult bikes to ride. Whatever. That style of bike is called a track bike and if you're in a city you've likely seen people riding them around. It's not that tough. Link

I am looking for an old bicycle for a project I am working on. Preferably fixed gear, but I would take multi-speed also. I am planning to make a unicycle that would be better for commuting. The one I have now is only a 20 inch wheel and I am looking for anything bigger than that, maybe 24 or 26. Let me know if you are interested in contributing a bicycle to my project. Thanks.

Hello all! I'm going to be shopping for a bicycle here in a week or two, and based on a conversation I had with someone I'd like to know if anyone has done this, or if it's even possible: Making a key fob for a bicycle. Even though having a locking mechanism on a bike itself is a dumb idea I'd just like it for kicks. Y'know, after I've chained up my bike somewhere outside a store, turn around and "lock" it like a car as I'm walking away. Seems possible, but I just don't know how to go about this. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your time and effort!

So here's my idea: I'm restoring an old bike and there's a spot for a fake gas tank to go. I will build this tank, but one side will open up and hold within it an iPod dock. At least, I'd like it to. I'm thinking of using the pedals as a dynamo crank which would power the iPod and play music through speakers mounted on the handlebars. I've been doing a lot of research and it seems possible, however, I've not done something like this before and I was wondering if anyone would have any pointers on how to make this work well. P.S. A separate USB port would be cool as well, so that a phone could be charged while riding the bike. Thanks for your suggestions!

Does anyone know of a good way to remove the decals from a bicycle, specifically a Mongoose Montana? On the Interweb, a lot of people say you can, but just as many others say that doing so will ruin the paint and mess up the clearcoat that is applied over the decals. Is there a way to tell if my bike has a clearcoat above the decals? If I can remove them, would heating them with a hairdryer aid the removal process? And the sticky residue - what's the best thing to get rid of it? Lighter fluid? Thanks!

I want to make an attachment for my bike that generates and stores power when I ride it. I'm thinking of using and old car's alternator, but I don't know much about electricity, so I'm asking for help. Also, how can I store the power? In a battery? I'm planning on hooking up a plug outlet, which might be removable to save space. Thanks!

Im looking to make a gas/petrol push bike i have access to all tools exempt welder i have multiple weed eater engines and money is not a problem i am 18 and looking to put a motor on a 12inch bicycle i would pefer chain drive so a gear ratio? i would pefer it to go fast and be rear weel drive the motors dont have a clutch i have seen the one here but there friction drive somone help me out? thanks in advance

I'm looking for some help in constructing a portable mechanism to attach to a manual wheelchair and to the front of a bicycle while still using the wheelchair handles to manouvre the wheelchair. The front wheel would have to be removed in order to utilize the wheel chair handles to steer. This attachment would be for two elderly people able to get out but not able to walk far. Using this converted mode of transportation would make life so much easier. The wheel chair is presently folded in the trunk of a car and the bike could be attached onto a bick rack for sightseeing purposes. Any ideas out there?? Thank you,

So here it is:Here is a link to my upublished instructable:Magnetically Propelled BicycleI came up with this two weeks ago while I was day dreaming about levitation and magnets.The idea is that one stationary magnet set up on the middle of a bicycle negative facing front, can push two magnets bolted together, each facing negative, with an axle running through them and wheels on opposite sides. So when the stationary magnet'ss power is increased, the two magnets in front will be pushed, thus rotating the axle where the wheels are attached, adn obviously the wheels are turned.I say "when the power is increased" because hopefully an electro magnet can be used. I am not sure, but I think an electromagnet can be hooked up to a car battery, and then with some control device, more electricity can be sent to the magnet, possibly increasing the power ( I don't know much about this stuff so help me out here.Look at the schematics for all of the anatomy.I have not figured the turning system out completely, in the intro picture you may see that the turning wheel is connected to the rear by a bar ( In the way I believe it may work there will be two bars side by side, I can't really explain it yet). That is how I plan the turning to the controlled.If you have any ideas for this project, add a comment. I have not made this yet and am still creating it.Please, do not steal my idea, I am only 14 and just started inventing. I have no idea how the patenting system works and I do not have the money for it.I would also like to know more about electromagnets, how they work and where to buy them. Right now I have a 12 volt 5 amp Werker lead acid battery powering lights, cell chargers, gps, and a few other gadgets. When I go on long trips I take the batter charger with me to charge the battery with a wall charger. The wall charger is heavy and unnecessary if i could find a way to harness the power I generate when I pedal. i have seen plenty of generators which generate electricity by physically touching a dynamo to the tire but there must be a way to do it inductively, with no friction. What if I covered the wheel with hard drive magnets and ran them all past a coil on the frame? I know magnets going past coils will make electricity but not about rectifiers and capacitors and etc. How could I make this? Thank you

I will try and get some photos but alas, I have only a web camera. We had a German guy live with us for a 14 months and he left me his bicycle, and for NZ$50 which was great it has 30 gears, he left us 2 months ago. I picked up a pram and a little thing like a hamper trolley with no basket on it from a rubbish pile during an inorganic rubbish collection and the pram had single hooked handles. I picked up some galvanized tubing from a rubbish bin...I asked the worksite foreman could I look through the rubbish bin 9 moonths ago...I think thieves dump stuff in worksite rubbish bins...um, I came to Instructibles after browsing computer forums for 4 years...yay, I am here...and I saw the articles about the bicycle trailers and realized I had a bicycle. I can add so put 2 and 2 together and came up with 1 1/2 so went to work and built a bicycle trailer. It took me 2 hours maybe 3 and it works great. I am so pleased, I have an idea to offer computer and computer peripherial cleaning as a local service and the bicycle trailer may come in hady for pickups and deliverys and I have already practiced using the trailer to transport repaired LCD monitors to the PostShop after I repaired them, and how lucky I was for to get them repaired, phew...I am so happy...and...Jesus loves me...or from what I remember of Him he loves me...

When I was much younger, I re-spoked two bicycle wheels off-center and put them on a bicycle for a parade. I don't recall how I did this except it wa s an article in pop. mech. or pop. science magazine, or similar mag. I do remember that I used 24" wheels on a 26" frame and that they must have been less than 2" off-center to fit the frame. It was fairly easy to ride at slow speeds, but terribly hard to go fast, as it would tend to throw you off. It was a lot of fun, though. I hope someone can tell me how to build one of these again. Right, so I want to build a bicycle trailer that will carry a kayak and also is used for something else, but that's for an iBle, and not the point. As we all know, bicycles are considered vehicles in all 50 states. But, trailers that are pulled by motor vehicles have to have registration and tags. Is it so with bicycles? I don't want to break any laws, so if anyone has an answer, I'd appreciate it!

The frame of my bike is too short for me so my back seriously hurts especially up slopes. is it because the frame is too short or the handlebar is too low? if i reposition the saddle backwards, the cycling is a bit better but not a lot. next idea is: i have is to buy longer stem 2nd idea is to buy saddle support (pipe) that is bended backwards.

I'm working on a [secret] project that involves a recumbent bicycle. I'm going to have to use a long, tandem bike chain. The problem is, the pedals are going to be mounted at approximately a 32-43 degree angle to the rear axle, with an obstruction (me and my seat) in the way. Is there a way to some how redirect the chain, so that it would go under me? Thanks!

I struck basically struck a curb (an unmarked road island really) going 17 mph roughly and blew out my front rim. I broke a collar bone because of the accident. Anyways I was wondering if the frame is okay I looked at it and there was no visible cracks anywhere. Its a cheap Schwinn frame and it got me wondering if it would be safe to put a new rim on and go. BTW this is a gas powered motorized bicycle not the cheap ones as shown BEFORE the crash.

I've been trying to find some DIY instructions on how to attach a folding shopping cart to a bicyle, but get no where. I once saw someone on a bike who did just that, but I didn't get a close look at it. Nor did I ask them how they did it. Both of us were on errands, so.... Anyone out there who can figure out how to do this, without welding & metal bar cutting, as I don't have such tools to do that. However, if a hacksaw will work for any cutting needed... Thanks

HI,I bought an Shimano HG-50 8 speed cassette.When fitted, I could see that it did not seem to be exactly true.For example, if I turn it backwards with my fingers and use a spoke as a reference point, it deviates by at least 1mmI took everything apart and tightened up the free-hub.The free-hub run perfectly true.It was still the same when reassembled.So I sent off for another HG-50 ( intending to send the defective one back).The newest HG-50 was the same.When I try I put on another new cassette ( an HG model but very old stock) it runs true ( it is a 7 speed with a spacer).Does anyone have any helpful input.Thank you

Here's the scenario and idea. Scenario: MY friends and I have taken up biking, however sometimes we get a little far from each other. My concern is that if one of us blows a tire or something like a chain falls off happens, there is no way to alert whoever is in front to stop. I've tried screaming but only look like a fool to anyone's house we ride by lol. My solution. I would like to build a remote light kit. I would like to have box with a small button (box size hopefully no bigger than 2x2 in) that could send a signal to another box on my friends bike that has a light attached to it so when I press the button (on my box) the light in the box on his bike lights up (therefore signaling him to stop). Dilemma: I know nothing about remote control electronics, as far as I can figure I need some form of transmitter and receiver. Hopefully able to run off of a triple a battery or one of those CR2032 watch batteries. I would need it to be able to send the signal maybe 100 feet (but if it can go further that would be welcome) I'm hoping maybe someone has experience with such items and might be able to suggest something... ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a bike I built a year ago. It uses a 30.5cc (about 1.5hp) weed whacker engine for propulsion. A version of the same thing was on Instructables, and that's what partially inspired me to make this. ;) The engine mounts are made out of wood, because I still have not learned to weld, but they hold up just fine. The engine is an ten-year-old Echo weed whacker. It has 10,000 max RPMs. The bike peg attached is 2" in diameter and gives about 25mph top speed. There is no clutch! The one that came with the engine was way too flimsy for a vehicle like this so I took it out. Saved a lot of space, too. For the throttle, I disconnected the back brake line and connected it to the engine. The front brakes are still intact, and you can turn the engine off to slow the vehicle as well. I added the extra heatsink to the engine to help keep it cooler, as it was never meant for this kind of exertion. It gets as hot as the engine, so I guess it conducts the heat away pretty effectively. There is a 10-LED bargraph to show the engine temperature. It uses an LM3914, an op-amp, and a thermistor. There is also a 555 to drive a buzzer when it gets too hot. The bike has head and taillights that are both driven from a joule thief. They are not very bright; they are more for being seen than to see. A really good bicycle headlamp needs quite a bit of electricity to make it bright and last a couple of hours. A dynamo requires extra leg power to operate. Yet, there are power distribution lines along the roads where I ride and they emit electro-magnetic lines of force. Imagine a coil of wire on the bicycle that follows the triangle portion of the bicycle frame and it receives these lines of force, converting them to a low voltage AC current. That current would then be passed through a bridge rectifier and a voltage regulator to charge normal size flashlight cells powering the light. Technically, it is probably illegal. Certainly it would be if you were using a coil of wire on your lawn positioned under the power lines to power your house. If it could be done safely, the power company would have a hard time tracking you. It is probably impractical, but it is interesting to ponder.

Okay- My boyfriend thinks I'm absolutely crazy, but I would like to modify the bicycle generator a la this instructable. I was hoping to have some way to attach it to an axle of an 18 wheeler tractor. Then the trouble would be hooking up the battery to a generator so we wouldn't have to pay for gas to power the ac and tv when we're sitting still. I'm hoping some good mind out there would have some tips! Many thanks!

Hello guys i would like to start making a proximity sensor the idea is to mount it on the back of my bicycle when an object/vehicle come close it gives me reading with distance and maybe a beep or something like that,the question is i found there are 2 methods one using IR and one using ultrasonic,which one is cheaper and which one is better and easier.this is supposed to my first instructable involves programming.
