The indestructable bike lock! ...Idea

The indestructable bike lock: the forum topic that was posted undeniably just to annoy the future patenters! So I had this weird idea for a product come out of nowhere. Y'know how aluminum is supposed to make cutting wheels on an angle grinder gum up, stick, and shatter - when trying to cut it, that is? I was wondering, what if a company engineered a special type of aluminum alloy or a similar material that would do just that: gum up abrasive cutting wheels and make them stick/bind and shatter. Then like with layers of plywood, it would be sandwiched together with hardened steel, in the shape of a U-lock bike lock, making it: Impossible to cut through with a hacksaw, reciprocating saw, TCT bladed portaband , because it's hardened and would wreck the teeth. Impossible to cut through with an angle grinder or rotary tool with an abrasive wheel because the aluminum would gum it up. Impossible to cut through it with bolt cutters - obviously... Impossible to freeze it with freezing gas? I don't know. I heard that's what thieves do. Maybe that aluminum alloy would be a super-insulator and wouldn't allow the hardened steel layer to freeze and become more brittle?I think it might just be invincible until the portable cordless battery powered waterjet is invented!Thoughts?

$2 Dollar Bike lock.

I have recently been searching for a cheap bike lock or a way to make one. Yesterday I went to a garage sale with my friend, what we found there where combination locks for $1 dollar each. I quickly bought one, and then the lady asked what I needed it for. I told her now I just needed to buy some chain and I wouldnt have to sped a lot of money on a bike lock. She out of nowhere handed me the chain and let me have it for $1. Well anyway thats how I acquired it but does anybody know if theese locks can be picked or if the chain can be broken. The chain is in moderatly good condition and is as thick as the stuff used for swings. I dont have a pictrue because my camera needs batteries

would this bike idea work?

I have an idea for a bike, where you lay down to use it, sort of like a recumbent, except on your stomach instead. it would be motor powered, and have 2 back tires and one front tire, steered by two steel (or maybe some other material) cables directly attached to the handle bars via a smaller bar at the bottom of the handle bars. it would probably have 48v's worth of batteries, and the chassis would most likely be made out of PVC piping. (unless that isnt a good material for this) i would be designing the bike around me, there might be a camera display so i can see behind me, headlights and tail lights for at night, and most definitely some brakes, maybe disc brakes. i weigh about 100lbs, so the pvc piping should be able to support my weight, i was thinking of using 1.5" or 2" diameter pvc piping, should i use something with a wider diameter? the base of the chassis would be made from 4 pvc pipes arranged in a square, with the pipes about 2"-4" apart. does anyone think this design is totally impossible? or could it work out? i want to know before i buy anything. on the strength of pvc pipes, my friend once had a pvc bike trailer that was capable of supporting my weight, he has since taken it apart to use the pvc in other projects. it was 2" pvc pipes used on that trailer.

BIKE GENERATOR?!

Hey, I'm much more of a mechanical guy than an electrical one, and yeah, I'm trying to be won over, but I think this project might help me bridge the gap if I can get it rolling. what do you guys think about buying maybe six or so friction light generators and disconnecting the lights, putting two on the front wheel, four on the rear, (they rub on the side of the tire) and wiring them all together to produce a power source? like I said, I'm horrible with electrical stuff- maybe you could even build a larger generator like I saw in another instructable, but do you think it'd be possible to either create a car-adaptor-style outlet, or even a functioning regular power outlet with that idea? what about an electric bike that charges itself while pedal in that sense? talk to me people!

HMD for biking?

Oh I'm looking into building an HMD for biking. I have the idea of using a miniature lcd from one of those video glasses to project an image onto a piece of one way mirrored acrylic and mounting all of this on a pair of safety glasses. an app displaying current, max and avg.speed and direction on my iphone would provide the information for the display. I'd likely have to add blinders on each side to block out light from the side. but because it is so bright on the other side of the mirrored acrylic i would be able to see through it making into a hud/hmd. any way i have a couple of questions. 1.) do the glasses display whats on the iphone at all times or only during videos? 2.) is this even feasible? below are images of what the iphone displays as well as a rough 2D solid edge drwaing

Arduino Music Lock

Had this idea for some time and ill possibly do it when i learn more electronics stuff. But for now, i'll share the idea! So imagine you have a secure locked door. Theres no keypad or keyhole anywhere on or near the door, but there is a microphone setup on it. The only way to open the door would be to play whatever song or series of notes that are programmed into the "lock" with a musical instrument. Since there are several lock-based instructables here that use arduino boards, would it be possible to use one with whatever required components to make a lock that opens with music as a key?

Bike conversion ideas for a semi-noob

Having just rescued my nice GT from my parents' place, my old junker bike is now surplus to requirements. (I like to have a "spare" bike, but now I have three bikes it's literally a fifth wheel. And sixth.)I've wanted to build an electric bike or a recumbent for a long time, but despite fiddling with bikes for a while I'm still just a competent novice. A competent novice with very limited tools, in fact. Therefore I'm looking for a project like this uber-simple electric-assist (incomplete) or the no-weld recumbent. If anyone knows of any other projects like these, I'd like to see them.Pictures of the bike to follow- it's a fairly generic short-frame mountain bike, probably intended for dirt jumping as it's got a short geometry, thick downtube and a low seat/short seat tube. The front fork is a "suspension" fork with about 1" of travel and too much preload to be any use on roads, everything else is standard.

creative bike handlebar grip ideas?

I often get alot of bikes/partial bikes from people and end up fixing them up and giving them to friends who need them or trading them for other bikes, but the problem is that most bikes I get are missing the handlebar grips, and I don't want to spend 5-10 dollars on a set of grips just so I can give the bike away. I would like to be able to go to the hardware store and buy the objects in bulk for pretty cheap. Just post ANY ideas you have, thanks.

Wheelchair mountain bike

Hi guys, I have an idea for a go anywhere buggy that I can use on mountain bike trails instead of my wheelchair. I have a very basic design of my idea and need advice on where to go from here. I have a very rough sketch of my idea. But I have no idea of how to use AutoCAD or do anything else with this fantastic little device. So I thought I would ask all of you guys for your input. In the attached sketch. The pink represents a rigid frame. The green is suspension. The black is bicycle tires appropriate for your needs. The blue is an adjustable net seating. And the gray is batteries and motors. However my son informs me that it is possible to put the motor in the hub of the wheel. Which sounds like an excellent idea to me! My idea is to hang the frame from the suspension above the wheels.  And balance the weight of the occupant(s) and the batteries. I think that this has potential for many other applications, but I just want to go play in the woods and the beach again!

Preventing Kicked-in Bike Wheels?

After purchasing the toughest bike lock I could find, I got the wheels kicked in by a frustrated would-be thief who could only get through the plastic coating with whatever tool he was using. (he incidentally got all of the other bikes locked up outside my dorm.) The closest lockers are a 30 min walk away, and they only allow for a small, easily cut padlock. I have an uncharacteristically small dorm room, so racking it in my room isn't really plausible. Any ideas? Maybe a couple of spokes reinforced with steel bar, or a cheap homemade bike shed?

Time lock box? Answered

Hey I've seen the movie city of ember and there you have a box that locks itself from the inside, only to open again once the preset time has expired. I'd love to make one for a friend of mine (and for me as well), who's always distracted during the examination, so he could lock his distractions away for the time needed. I browsed hours to find timers and count down circuits. the best things that I could find, never were longer than e few hours or a day. but for this project it should at least last a month. I got a weird Idea of hooking up egg timers in series, so if the first one ends, the next one starts, until your last one finished that opens the box (the more I think about it, the more it's sounding impossible to do) the next best thing that would simplify the build was an arduino, but since these are essentially tiny computers I think it would be a wast to just let them count down. (and doesn't a arduino consume a lot of power too?) and I would like to only use an arduino as last resort... you can make robots out of these little board, it would be too tempting to pull it out of my project and try to make something cool with it. would any of these idea's work descent? does anyone know what could be the best way to pull this off? thanks

I can't really choose between the two. any suggestions? aslo I would like to hear of other good locks also. preferably sold secure gold. Thanks. *sorry to be picky.

Bicycle security!

Hey hey, so the other day i came up with a way that i thought might work well for a bicycle security...thing. anyways, since just about all bikes are made of metal, except the carbon ones, and metal conducts electricity, what if you had some way of making your bike, electrically charged? i guess (i dont know all the proper words heh) so if a person comes up to your bike and wants to take it, at some point in the process of taking your bike, he would come in contact with some metal part and get shocked. i thought if you made it properly, and made the shock strong enough, it would be a great way to keep your bike safe...cause i know if i went to take someones bike, and all of a sudden i get zapped all of a sudden every time i touch the bike, i would not want that bike! i figured you'd need some batteries with enough voltage to give him a good shock, enough to make him not want to take the bike, but not so much that you would kill him...that obviously would not be good.  but i'd imagine that more powerful batteries might be to big, and not fit anywhere on your bike. i thought that maybe you could hide everything in the seat tube after you take the seat post out, and maybe have a hidden switch somewhere on the bike so you could turn it off. im sure there's more issues i havent thought over, just an idea, and im far from an electrical expert, so i dont know how rubber shoes might ground the person, or how you would go about wiring it, and other stuff like that. i just wanted to see what some people here thought about it, and if it is even possible for me to do

Challenge: A key defroster for opening bike locks in winter.

Hello all.So I live in Montreal, winter is long here. Every morning opening our bike locks is problematic. We fixed it partially with lube, but this post is not about these solutions.I have been looking for a device that could heat the frozen core of the lock. You can see an image attached of a product not available anymore to get the idea. I guess it was not working very well...I have zero knowledge in electronics/electricity. I thought this question could be interesting/challenging for some of you. So ideally the gadget would be:Small enough to be carried on the key chain or in a commute bag.Able to be inserted in any type of locksBuilt with a safe way to prevent unwanted switch on (to avoid burning bags/pockets/houses...Lol)Able to produce enough heat to defrost the lock Rechargeable would be best (USB best best), capacity of 5mn maybe to operate twice a day...Reasonably quick to unfreeze the lock, so you don t freeze yourself (That s why I abandon using hot pouches around the lock, pouring hot water will fix it quickly but then it will freeze again)As I said, I don t have the skills to even begin to find a solution, but I saw a lot of smart stuff here and I am curious to see what you guys would answer to that. My guess is that it must be very difficult, if not I can t see why a similar product is not widely commercialized. I think a lot of people would buy it.Thanks for the reading, I hope I picked your interest. Have a good day.

magnetic bike pedals DIY? Answered

I'm Brainstorming a better magnetic pedal .   I know Proton and Mavic already make them But I'd like to have a Mag-Pedal that can be used with any shoe .    ... IDEA:  Using recycled neodymium magnets glued recessed into a gel insole  and magnets on pedals I'm hoping to make it easier than cleats on special shoes.  Of course you won't get the locked in power of straps or clippless cleats .This would be ideal for mud, gravel, quick commuting on regular bikes, bmx, mtb, people who what some full leg power on the up stroke but want to put your foot anywhere on the pedal you want.  Question: Might there be extra bearing ware from magnets?  Will there be enough magnetism through an inch of rubber to work??   Please critique my idea .

Hello all! I'm going to be shopping for a bicycle here in a week or two, and based on a conversation I had with someone I'd like to know if anyone has done this, or if it's even possible: Making a key fob for a bicycle. RFID/NFC computer lock?

I am curious if any of you have an idea for something that could detect a bracelet from 5-10 feet and when it leaves, issue a sleep command to a computer.  I think it would be relatively easy to issue the command from an arduino, but I'm not very sure on which tags and readers to use for the right range.  The idea would be for the computer to automatically sleep/lock when you leave the room.  So what frequencies/types of tags and readers should I look into that will offer a decent range, that is close enough not to loose connection reaching across the desk or walking a few feet across the room, but won't work from a few rooms down the hall, and will interface well with an arduino.

Any ideas for lightweight chainlink?

I'm building a project where two stepper motors control the exact position of a pointer (over a map). I need the pointer to be hanging from the two stepper motors, with the extra chain (or string, if that'd be better) hanging down the other side, so the entire contraption will look like a big 'M' (where the tops are the motors and the middle is the pointer) Because I need to control exact positions I think the best plan will be to have the two stepper motors fitted with spur gears and use thin bike chain over them to move the pointer. Bike chain would be good, except that it's too thick (it'd obscure the map too much in my opinion) and might be too heavy (there'll be ~3m of the stuff on either side). So, my question is: does anyone have any good ideas for reasonably lightweight chainlink (or some other non-slip linkage) and where I could by it (preferably here in the UK)?

Bike pump problem?

I was using my bike pump today to fill a pneumatic launcher, and finally I just got fed up with the leaking around the pump base. On every stroke, the first 3/4 of air would be leaked out of the base, and it would only compress the remaining 1/4 of air remaining, and that would only compress if you pushed down very hard, and quickly, otherwise it all leaked out. And no matter what pressure the launcher was pressureized to, the pump handle/piston would slide down slowly, getting pushed down under it's own weight, meaning that there was almost no resistance to it. I think the leak is occuring where the tube meets the pump base, and you can feel air rush out with your legs as you pump. I'm pretty sure there is a one way valve in the gauge portion of the pump, which connects to the base with a hose,  and the filling hose is coming out of it, which is allowing me to compress at least a little air before the rest leaks out. I disassembled  the pump, starting with the base. Turns out, the leak was from an oring on the tube which was not tightened down enough by a screw on ring around the base of the tube. Put it back together, and voila, pushing my finger against the schrader valve connector and pushing down on the pump handle created pressure against my finger and no leaking. As soon as I hooked it up to my launcher, i realized something was up, I could pump down once, but the pump handle just got pushed upwards as soon as i let go. This is what I can't figure out how to fix. It seems the one way valve in the gauge portion is locked in the open position. Anybody know how to fix this? EDIT: Okay I took pictures of the pieces. I now cannot figure out if the valve is in the base, or the gauge portion, so i have included pics of both. Hopefully someone can help me figure this out. EDIT 2: Turns out the valve is in the base, and the ball just fell out when i first disassembled it, i have now found the ball and it is working fine.

Ideas for winter cycling needed. Is it possible to have a removable "convertible" attachment on a bike?

My husband and I are thinking about selling our VW bus and living without a vehicle.  We take public transportation regularly for longer distances and bike a lot.  But selling our VW bus would mean that we would not be able to rely on it in times of foul weather.  I picture making a "convertible" cover for my bicycle, where I could cover myself during poor weather -- something sort of like the typical child trailer: http://www.flickr.com/photos/yewenyi/3921754932/ But an attachment that would only be attached when the weather was bad.  I thought it would have to attach onto the rear wheel hub and the head tube and be primarily made of heavy clear plastic.  Can anyone here envision something like this?  Is it feasible?
