Yay! There's finally a hackerspace dedicated to biotech research...in New York City. I'm kind of sad I can't drop by to visit any time soon, but I hope (fingers crossed) I can get the ever so popular caitlinsdad to go and report on it. If nothing else, I want to share with you our story in the project, and hopefully you'll see how awesome this is. We are doing something that no high school has ever achieved before, and I think it's more relevant to the site than some re-posting of a blog article. Well, here's our story: You can help save a rare frog from extinction, and it is free! Kohls the dept. store is donating $500,000 to the 20 schools with the most creative need for the money. Your vote can help our school win this money, and best of all it costs you nothing! We are working on a project to try and save a rare frog from extinction. And we need the cash. At our small high school of 300 students, we are trying to completely sequence the genome of a rare Arizona frog. We hope to accomplish 2 things from this work. 1) We hope to rescue this frog from extinction. 2) We hope to train a new generation of students in modern biotechnology, and rescue the State of Arizona from last place in quality of education in the United States. The Chiricahua Leopard frog is currently listed as a threatened species. We have been working in conjunction with the Phoenix Zoo and Arizona Game and Fish to develop a genetic test that could aid in conservation efforts. We have already spent a year working on the sequence of the mitochondrial chromosome of this frog. Our school actually owns a DNA sequencer. We have made pioneering efforts in the design of genetic tests for this frog. Our students have presented 5 posters on our work at the International Plant and Animal Genome conference (PAG), quite an achievement for a high school. Our project was recently awarded one of only three heritage grants: http://www.gf.state.az.us/w_c/heritage_projects.shtml By the way, the other two Heritage grants were awarded to Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. What we really wish to do is completely sequence every chromosome in this frog. This is a very ambitious project. Consider that the human genome project completed in 2003, cost $3 billion dollars and took 13 years. Our leopard frog is estimated to contain twice as much DNA as humans! However, we think that with appropriate funding, and new technology that has recently become available we can accomplish this task in 2 years! We wish to construct what are called “DNA libraries”, collections of broken chromosome fragments of known sizes. These can be sequenced quickly using NEXT generation sequencing technology. The Chinese genomic group BGI has agreed to cover the costs of NEXT generation sequencing, and genome assembly for our project (an estimated $1 million) if our school can come up with the remaining funds needed for the construction of the libraries. We need to purchase about $200,000 in new equipment, and extend our existing lab space. With the completed genome sequence, we would like to have a custom “gene chip” manufactured. This chip will have all the DNA of the frog physically printed on it. The chip allows experiments to be carried out without any harm to any frog. This chip could then be used to aid conservation efforts by the Phoenix Zoo and Arizona Game & Fish. It could allow the exact parentage of every Chiricahua frog that is discovered to be known. Eventually this technology will become the backbone of conservation work on all species, but at this early stage it is not possible for Arizona Game & Fish to raise the funds needed to generate a gene chip before it is too late for the frog. Our school hopes to be the first in history to carry out a genome project. We hope this will serve as a guiding light to other schools, and start a grass-roots movement in the conservation and education world. Help us save our frog! Here is the catch. Arduino can read coordinates from a mouse, a small example is in the following link http://www.martijnthe.nl/2009/07/interfacing-an-optical-mouse-sensor-to-your-arduino/ But how could read color for using mouse as an pulse oxymeter? More than this we could use it with optical fiber adapted to the "eye" of the mouse for intravascular measuring ScvO2 !!!???

Entries are now being accepted for the bay area Maker Faire that will be happening on May 3-4 in San Mateo. This is an awesome event and we'll be there to represent, but we'd love to see some of you guys show off your cool ideas as well. You have until March 12 for entries. Hi all sydney instructables and indestructables - i just love all this stuff and i am sure some of you are just as passionate. i am running a futures festival and currently in open innovation/open production mode - ie., we all get together and just make a really cool festival. Its called Live Futures 2020: A World of Opportunity. We are creating interaction spaces for the public, particularly young people, futurists, scientists, inventors, researchers, designers, artists, performers, architects, engineers,.......to co-create the future. covering things like nanotech, biotech, health, robotics, education, climate, retrofitting cities to be sustainable, etc... only limited by all our imaginations. If you have something cool to share or just like the idea of co-creating the future join us to create the festival and share the loveat last year's festival we had a young guy who made the coolest electronic musical instruments out of junk and old toys and the crowd loved it. I am sure we now have upcoming electronics whizzes in sydney because of him, i hope tim'll be with us this year too. maybe you have something inspirational too...

I posted this topic before, but I don't think anybody saw it (instructables glitch?)From wendsday to saterday i went to a resort named 7 springs in champion, Pennsylvania. I was there for a national competition called technology student association (aka TSA). This competition was states, for I already went to regionals.I won 1st place in Electrical Applications, which is basically your knowledge of electronics (you take a test) and you have to create a circuit on a bread board, along with creating a schematic. I tell you, this was almost a joke. Questions on the test are like --| C---- what is that a symbol of? And what does IC stand for?The breadboard challenge was even easier. They gave you a breadboard, a 9 volt battery, a lightbulb, and some wires. The challenge was to make a circuit (and schematic) that light up the lightbulb whenever you touch the probes to the right spots. Like you know those question and answer things at science fairs where if you line up the right question with the right answer? That's basically it.I also won 1st place along with a couple of my friends for a medical challenge where we gave a presentation on alzheimer's disease. Not much to explainMe and my friends also won 3rd in another thing, I can't remember (I get my trophy on wensday because they didn't have enough trophies for the whol group). I think it was in agriculture and biotech where we talked about biofuels.Me and my friend got 6th in a challenge where they give you a random technology topic and they give you 10 minutes to prepare (no computers) and then you have to give a speach.Me and my friends got 10th in a thing called tech bowl where they give your random questions and you are in direct competition wire people nexy to you (you have a buzzer).Me and my friends got 9th place in a challenge where we talked about the enviroment (specificaly ozone depletion);)does anybody know where this came from, I'm pretty sure I saw it at TSA (I just remember a yellow wrapped transformer at an angle in a box with a phone and it's all in a box)http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/04/send_an_sms_to_save_your.html#comments.
