Bird House Geocache with a Twist

Hello everyone! I am interested in creating a geocache for an upcoming event I will be attending. My thought is to have a birdhouse (fairly large) that will have walls that are on hinges that open when the person presses down on a plunger of a dynamite box (handmade of course). Crazy idea I know but I am basing it on the event. While I have limited electronic knowledge I am in dire need of help in trying how to make this work and have it be able to reset itself for the next person to find.I would greatly appreciate any help with how this would work, and would definitely give credit to anyone who helps in the cache listing. Thanks in advance. -Will

Species of Bird?

This bird has been flying around lately and today it landed on the top of my house. I snapped a few pictures. I know it's a bird of prey but can anyone name the genus or species? I think it's a falcon, but I'm not too into birds. Thanks!

how do I put a microphone at a bird feeder and listen in the house?

This would be very similar to a baby monitor.  Is there a way to transmit the signal from outside to inside the house?

Can you make a clear birdhouse? Answered

More specifically would birds use this, or would they see through it , not feel safe, and leave. I was considering using Plexiglas.

bird feeder / birdbox alternatives?

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for any sort of animal feeders and/or houses? I've seen such things as bat boxes at different places which provide a home for bats. Also most places seem to carry feeders for birds that are designed to keep squirrels out, but few carry feeders for the squirrels themselves. Why cant those little critters with the break-dancing tails get any love? Any other suggestions for animal houses and feeders would be cool too. Can't wait to see what yas come up with!

What is better? A Cat or A Dog?

Sometimes cats are lazy like most dogs. they always cuddle up next to you and purr! and they are playful too. people think dogs are playful, mabey....sometimes.... no? cats are less noicy(make les sound) I've never seen a dog chase his tail. I have only seen cats do that. dogs slobber. but also are pretty much only cute when there puppies. ~mostly~ dogs leave toys all around the house while the cat is being playful and cute. I eaither want another cat or a dog sometime. Or mabey a bird?

Hi, I'm looking for a motion detector with difference & wonder if anyone has any bright ideas. I have setup a bird box on the side of my house & it's early spring here in the uk. I'm only getting occasional visits from a bluetit couple & would like to know when the're home.An initial idea is to check the brightness of the video image. Does anyone know how to move a dove cote without distressing the birds too much?

We have a small wooden dove cote which houses 8 white doves and we want to move it about 10 meters from its current position. We had some dramas when we moved their feeding platform with it taking the birds a couple of days to find the new one. I don't want the birds to get so distressed with moving home that they leave. Any suggestions?

We need to alter our chicken house gate to allow chickens to pass through but not wild birds. Answered

We have covered the whole structure with bird-netting to keep wild birds out of the chickens' food, with some of it draped over the gate opening to within about 30cm of the ground.  We need to be able to get in and out of the full-height gate easily ourselves, as well as allowing the chickens to go in and out freely.  The trick is how to do that without allowing wild birds to also pass through. I thought of leaving the netting draped over most of the open gateway (we shut the inwards opening door only at night time) and then having a smaller gate at the bottom that the chickens can push through at the bottom 30cm, perhaps made of a cafe-blind cut into strips and fixed to a rod attached across the lower part of the gate. Alternatively, we could cut out some of the lowest horizontal bars of the gate and replace them with a lockable flap, hinged at the top. Any ideas of what the flap could be made of that the chickens would be able to freely pass through and wouldn't be frightened of?  I made a doggy door in another gate out of the lid of a plastic storage container but the chickens don't go through this (and I don't want them to learn how). I would appreciate any suggestions. Cheers, Mandy

Nesting Sparrows Journal

Hello all, Ive got some House Sparrows nesting in my yard, right next to my window. I know their just boring 'ol sparrows, but their still fasinating to study. Anyway, I plan on making a journal of sorts for their nest and such. I hope to be able to update it every other day or so. If you have any questions or comments please ask! I will get a photo as soon As I can. I will keep this up to date as best I can. Thanks! Anyway... April 1st-5th: Sparrows in and out, they seem to like it. April 6th: Sparrows begin filling nest box with straw. April 7-13th: Sparrow stuffing box with straw any hay. Constantly in the yard. April 14th: Frequently in and out of nest box, almost always one bird inside at all times April 15th: Lining of the nest! A number of feathers have been added to the now bowl shaped interior. Male and female always close by. April 16th - 20th: More nest lining, though they seem to be not as active as they were when they were filling the nest box with straw. April 21st: The sparrows have found a liking for plastic packaging, and have added a fair bit to the box. April 22nd: Their plastic taste continues with the addition of a plastic bag. Its getting really cramped inside, though there is a nice bowl shape inside now. April 23rd-26th: Finished lining, the sparrows seem to be spending their down time in a nearby tree, soaking up the sun.

Secret fold out compartment with shot glass and bottle in a birdhouse???

Years ago I saw a plan for building a birdhouse which actually housed two shot glasses and a bottle. Now I would like to make the "concealed" station for a friend. I remember that it had a cleaver fold down hinge that held the glasses in place on a board. The peg where the bird might have stood also did something clever. Can you lead me to plans for something like this?

There was a parrot in our tree! (updated)

I was on the computer and my dad came inside and told me there was a parrot in our tree! So I grabbed my camera and ran outside. It's a really beautiful bird. We got it to go onto someone's arm and then got it into our garage. Then it landed on my arm so my dad tried to come catch it with a box and it almost got stuck in my hair. Eventually we got it in the box and brought it over to my neighbors house (she was helping us catch it) because my mom would have a cow if she came home and saw that I had a parrot. They're going to call the police department and stuff so they most likely won't be able to keep it :(Update The neighbors had the parrot for quite a while and they had put an and in the newspaper and everything and then they gave it to one of their friends to take care of and then later the person who owned the bird came back from vacation and contacted them about it. I'm not sure what happened after that.

I'm having a hard time finding a recycling project for my college biology class that turns trash into something useful

Most of the project ideas that I've seen so far seem too basic, too simple, and not creative enough for a college level project ( e.g. a milk carton bird feeder, green house is a bottle...) Any ideas on a project that will show a high level of difficulty, creativity, and usefulness of a material that might otherwise cause harm to the environment if not recycled? Thanks for any help...

Is it possible to operate an integrated home network from a laptop?

A couple days ago I was walking around my house with my laptop in hand, catching up on some American financial news via Russia Today. Needless to say I made it to the kitchen without any mishaps and brought everything into the dining room. As I was eating breakfast, I was staring out the window at my bird feeder, with the news going, when the idea hit me. I'd seen other instructibles on digital picture frames which use computers and essentially integrate them in the house in a unobtrusive manner. Why should I have to walk around with my laptop when, theoretically, I could have a network of computer stepping stones integrated throughout my house. Is it possible to program a thin network where all the clients mirror one laptop? Is is also possible to use Johnny Lee's infrared fingers to turn on/ control a digital picture frame thin client in places where you don't want to use a touch screen? ie. the kitchen, workshop, or even in a hospital?... Could all this be done economically by re-purposing used school/uni computers, and freeware like Linux and Ubuntu and Cloud One?

A Visit to Simon Field's Farm

Last Thursday my friends Quinn and Xander invited me along on a visit to Simon Field, a chemist, inventor, and entrepreneur. He lives on a small farm in the mountains south of San Jose, with his wife, a couple of alpacas, some goats, and a great many chickens, parakeets, and other parrot-like birds. And a tree house with a rope bridge going out to it, where he occasionally hosts parties. And a solar cell array from which they get most or all of their electricity. And a huge redwood tree, which someone in the '60's rented out to live in! And a hillside spring which under the right circumstances can shoot a fountain 30 feet into the air. And an art studio, and many artworks of various sorts just set here and there for one to stumble across. And a lot of salamanders... Check the image notes for details. Inside, his house is filled with science toys, spilling out from his workshop.  I had to make a separate forum topic on those to treat them properly!

18" Eric Draven The Crow NECA - $30 OBO

Check out this realistic version of Brandon Lee as Eric Draven! The tragic character, otherwise known as "The Crow," is shown here as a testament to Lee's legacy. The Crow stands 18" tall and comes with his trenchcoat and bird that can perch on his shoulder. Highly detailed with articulation at the neck, shoulders, forearms, wrists, waist, and ankles, The Crow also speaks 5 different phrases. He's been on display for about five years in a smoke free and dust free environment. He retails for 70 dollars on amazon, but I'm cleaning house and would like to see him get a new home. So thirty dollars and he's yours! Serious offers only. The figure is loose, no packaging and comes complete.

It's 4:30 PM, there's a tropical storm stalled overhead, I've got three baby animals bleeding on my robot shirt and it's 20 miles to the wildlife rehabilitator...Hit it...

I kept hearing KEY...KEY...KEY... So I ventured out thinking it was some bird, I'm looking all over and keep hearing it. Search all over the yard, check the garage (it's trapped a bird before), nothing. But I keep hearing it, maybe it's coming from across the street? Man there's a lot of crap in the street, and it's moving, OH CRAP!! There's a squirrel dray in the street all torn up and three bloody, wet babies in the road. So I scoop them up into my robot shirt, where they promptly pee, not the worst thing I've had on me. ;-) I rush into the house and call my vet, since he used to rehab flying squirrels, and get the # for the "local" rehab place. It's in Bithlo, twenty miles away, that won't mean anything to you if you don't live in Fl. but it's the West Virginia of Fl, the nightmare before Christmas, and Baghdad all rolled into one. Let's cut this short, I got them there, the guy says they're in better shape than they looked, I gave them a donation for their care, and now I'm back home, realizing I'm nicer than I am reasonable, and that's okay with me...

Any tips on disassembling bullet camera and relocating the lens module?

Hello!  I've been reading instructables for a while and now it's time to join and post a question. I've been finding nails in my driveway and want to catch who's doing this.  I've got a 4 channel security camera on it's way and have been thinking and researching ways to hide them.  Due to the 'clean' surfaces around my home, it's going to be tough to make the 2" diameter x 6" long bullet cameras blend in (so people don't vandalize/steal them).  I've spent hours searching how to camouflage cameras, so I know the 'typical' tricks. I'm thinking about making a fake gutter extension and hiding the camera in there (so it blends into my one story house), possible installing a gable vent on my garage and pointing a camera through that, or trying to mount a camera about 20' up a nearby tree.  My favorite idea is to take apart a bullet camera and move the camera lens module, which is much smaller than the whole camera housing, to a more discreet location. I've searched for a while but can't find anyone who has done this with an IP66 outdoor style camera.  I know I'm going to lose the IR LED's around the lens, and that's ok (I'll have 3 other cameras for night vision).  I think I can point the camera through a small knot hole in my privacy fence and be able to detect who has last walked by when the nails appear.  I might make a small weather proof enclosure to protect the lens module...I think I'm a good tinker-er so this isn't the problem. Has anyone hacked apart a security camera and moved the lens module (by extending the wires) to a remote location?  I know there are small cameras for sale, I know I can hide a camera in a bird house, etc...but I like to make things.  I'm just looking for advice/tips from someone who has done this.  When I search for 'hack apart a security camera' I get a bunch of 'hacking into a security system', or 'spy on your neighbors'...I don't want to do either of those.  I have great neighbors, I live in a corner house where a lot of people/kids walk...I just want to catch them.  Once I know who's doing it, I'll move the cameras to more visible locations (to deter others from doing anything else). Thanks for any help!

Retrofitting an Old, Rundown Barn Into an Awesome Work/Storage Space

Hey guys. My family just began work on a farm we bought two years ago, and soon I'll move into a new house there. The property has a huge barn (not an animal barn) that served as the central building for an old cowboy camp and a vacation home. It's cool to me because it was built by one man over sixty years ago using power line posts, some lumber, and good, old-fashioned DIY ingenuity. It's survived several floods from the river that flows only a hundred yards from it and building code since. Now, though, it doesn't serve much purpose other than sheltering a tractor built 63 years ago and providing a home for mice and birds. The place is also full of the previous owner's junk that's strewn about. As the work continues, I hope to bring the building back into glory as a very useful workshop to build many great projects that I never could inside my family's one-car garage. Storage is also an extreme necessity in the barn, and I'll need lots of it in a minimal amount of space. I plan on using my workshop for metalwork, electronics, woodworking, and mechanics. What is yours used for? What kind of solutions have you made in your work spaces and storage areas? What is interesting about them? Please comment; I'm sure we'd all like to hear your stories. -Update: The barn now has a new roof and concrete floor.

Instructables Internship Days 5-6 (Including the weekend!)

Hi everyone,Sorry I didn't post on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, but I'll make up for that now.So, Friday:I arrived at Squid Labs knowing that today was a special day. Today would be the day that construction on Proj. X would commence. Jason and I layed out the materials and began building, taking pictures every step on the way. We assembled the main component by lunch time, and installed about 66% of the other components by the end of the day. Noah helped us out a bunch, figuring out where certain components should go and how to attach others to the "mainframe."The (construction) work environment at Squid Labs is awesome! We pretty much just dragged our materials outside and started working. You really can do whatever you want, whenever you want; it's truly amazing. I'm pretty sure that Today was the day that I realized how much I'd be willing to drop out of school and just work for Instructables. I don't really think it's a great idea, but I'd certainly be happy working full-time for Instructables, no doubt about it!I really didn't do much else today, Jason and I pretty much just worked on the.... on Proj. X (Caught myself, whew!) all day! Now, onto the weekend!Friday, Billy and I decided that we would go into the city (San Francisco) via BART/Bike on Saturday. Saturday has come, and it's finally time for me to go to S.F.After Christy dropped off Billy and I (with our bikes) at the BART station, we rode BART all the way to the city. Christy also gave us 2 tickets to go to the S.F. MOMA, which was awesome. There was this one drawing that I really, really liked. Unfortunately, I can't remember the artist or the title of the work, although I'm pretty sure it's entitled, "Untitled." There was also this really odd exhibit, which was...just generally odd. Imagine a house. Now, rip all of the walls out of the house, rotate the whole structure that you ripped out equally over the X and Y axis, and then shove it through the walls of MOMA.... yeah, it was pretty damn weird. Then they guy drilled and off-center hole in a record and that was playing on a timer, so it went really fast, then slow, etc etc. In the next room, there were about 20 pictures of what we just saw... Again... just odd.Anyway, after MOMA, I decided that it would be really awesome to see the Golden Gate Bridge, so Billy and I rode our bikes down toward the piers, and we'd then take "The Embarcadero" to the bridge. So, as we were passing Pier 39, my left pedal stripped out of its socket, leaving me no way to "bike" to the Bridge. Luckily, it broke off at pier 39, which just-so-happened to be a "tourist pier." Billy and I hung out there for most of the day. During lunch we "fed" a bunch of birds; pigeons, little birds, and a really mean seagull...After we realized that we would have to walk all the way back to the BART station, we started on our journey back. Awesomely, on the way, we came upon a really tranquil-looking park and a square with a huge, awesome sculpture. The sculpture had a bunch of gigantic concrete "square tubes" that jutted out of its huge base. There was water flowing out of almost everything, and steppingstones that allowed the viewer to walk underneath the immense structure. The only two words that I could describe it with are simply awesome. We arrived back at the original BART station, Christy picked me up, we ate dinner, and went back home.Sunday:Sunday was just awesome. Mitch and Erica took me Surfing with Mike, Jason, and Jason's Sister. Although the waves were small, it was a beautiful day, and we had an awesome time. For lunch, Awesome Mike brought his mini-propane grill and we had hot-dogs on the beach. After lunch, we went back into the water to surf a bit more and then left. Surfing was a blast!Back at "home," we watched "Sunshine," a sci-fi movie about a team of scientist/astronauts on a mission to deliver a bomb into their dying sun, to create a new sun within the old. Most of the movie was actually pretty good, but I thought the ending just... sucked outright. I won't ruin it for you, but you really don't need to see the movie. During the movie, though, Christy whipped up some Rhubarb Pie! YAY!Back to work - MondayYesterday, in the morning I made the "How to Create Homepage Images" Instructable, which I suggest you check out if you want to contribute to the website's homepage. We're giving you the opportunity to make homepage images that we'll actually use on the homepage... if they're good enough ;). After, Jason and I pretty much finished up Proj. X, but we will require some time in the afternoon on Tuesday to finalize construction. This thing is going to be AWESOME!In other news, Billy and I are going to "The Googleplex" tomorrow (Tuesday) to give a small talk with Christy, which I'm really excited for. At first I didn't expect that they'd want interns to go talk to Google, but Christy and Eric explained why they want us to go. Google wants the opinions of the users. Billy and I promise to speak well of everyone, and speak on everyone's behalf. I've gotta go, we're leaving soon!Cheers,-Muffinatorp.s. I burned my PB and Banana sandwich again v_v...

Create Scholarship Entry: Hearing Impaired

My project is designed to solve a personal problem. One I'm sure others struggle with. I am hard of hearing. My proposed project is for the iRobot to find me and tell me, via an LCD screen or similar visual, that the phone or doorbell is ringing. In order to keep the search path short, to start, in my house I'm thinking about using either virtual wall, which I can't afford, or a line down the hallway to the bed. When something is out of focus you can frequently stare at it until it comes into focus or you can ask someone what the sign says. With hearing loss you eventually realize you don't know you didn't hear something because people start yelling at you for ignoring them. Sound is fleeting. Usually only lasts a fraction of a second. I hear less that half of what most people hear. Without my hearing aids I can only hear the noisiest birds if they are about 20 feet or less from me. I can only hear my phone ring if I am within 15 feet of it and I have the volume all the way up. To talk on the phone, I have one that is relatively new and have the volume all the way up. Those 90db alarms, I need to be within 5 feet of them to hear them. The smoke alarm in the kitchen, I can hear it but it isn't going to wake me. A fire in the kitchen isn't going to trigger the alarm in the bedroom soon enough. It probably won't be loud enough to wake me, anyway. My house didn't have a doorbell when I moved in and I can't hear someone knock unless I have my hearing aids on and am within 10 feet of the door. After missing numerous UPS deliveries I installed a wireless doorbell and I carry the receiver, pager style, with me all day when I am expecting a delivery. And I have even missed UPS with that. If the water is running, the TV or radio is on, it is even more likely that I will not hear the phone or doorbell. If I'm in the bathroom even with the door open I don't have any idea what is happening on the other side of the doorway.A security system with cameras and sensors and a DVR would be ideal. But not in my budget. It might help me with my thieving neighbors.I have thought about getting a dog to help me but I have three rabbits and cannot afford another pet on my disability income. That would probably be a good solution. I own my own home, ok the bank owns it and lets me live here, but if I have to move into a rental most landlords do not allow pets. A robot would not be an issue. If I had a robot that could find me and let me know what is going on in my house it would be very useful. People do not wear hearing aids to bed. I don't usually wear my hearing aids at home to save on batteries. And because the feedback drives me crazy. I just turn the TV or radio up REALLY, REALLY LOUD. Sorry neighbors, it's not my intent to be annoying.I custom built the computer I am using. I have some experience programming simple robots such as the Parallax Boe-Bot. Most recently I built the miniPOV and mintyBoost from AdaFruit. I have 6 years experience as UNIX sysadmin and configuration management. I also have basic hardware and soldering experience. If I have enough time I would like to have it bring me the phone and have a microphone and speaker to talk to the person at the door. I would definitely like to add smoke and co2 detection but I noticed there are quite a few people taking that on and so I will leave that to the end. Maybe teach it to do a little dance, sing a little song, get down tonite. I could wrap it in mirrors, turn it into a floor disco ball. A different dance and sounds for each alert.A robot that could notify me of doorbell and phone events would make my life easier. I'd be inclined to sleep with it. If it could help clean up after the rabbits and ride herd on them I might worship it. Rosie the Robot, Rabbit Wrangler and goddess. If it could also keep me safe from intruders, fires, gas leaks and such. Heck I'll bear it's child! Shall I name it Proteus? or Alfred? Have you ever seen the movie Demon Seed? Classic.I took my time writing up my proposal to do some research and make sure I have the necessary skills and resources to accomplish this task. They warned us in the challenge. I also wanted to have something unique, although there can be many approaches to solving the same problem. If I do win one of the scholarships I will be interested in your suggestions about how to solve this project.

How do I install a new electrical outlet? Answered

I need guidance on how to install a new electrical outlet to an existing wall.  My bathroom only has one electrical outlet, and it's located on the vanity light over the sinks (see photo close-up of light outlet on outdated fixture with rad vintage pastel ikat wallpaper).  More info:  Usually this should be pretty easy, since there should be an outlet on the other side of the wall that you can just tap in to; but there's no outlets on the other side of any of these walls (see wall descriptions below).  There are electrical wires running through these walls though, powering lighting and heating.  So, can I just cut a hole in the wall, reach my hand in, grab a random wire, cut it, splice in wiring to a new outlet, and magically everything works?  Probably not that simple.  I can grasp the basics involved in this, but I'm not 100% certain on how to proceed with my situation since I don't think I need to deal with feeding up new separating wiring from the basement but I also just can't easily tap into an adjacent existing outlet.    Floor plan: There's 2 switches at the bathroom entrance: one for the lights, one for the bathroom fan. The light switch controls 2 light fixtures: the one overhead light (it's a light/fan combo) as well as the lighting above the sink.  See scan image for rough sketch of current electrical floor plan. Wall descriptions based on sketch: Left wall: interior wall; on other side of the wall is an electric baseboard heater; door to hallway Bottom wall: exterior wall; window Right wall: interior wall; adjacent room is unfinished "attic" area above garage with sloped ceiling* Top wall: interior wall; adjacent stairwell; wall-mounted light fixture with outlet; small under-cabinet baseboard heating vent thing I would like to know if/how I can tap into the electricity of that sink light fixture to be able to relocate the electrical outlet lower, closer to the sink counter, and possibly off to the side (so, not central to the counter as it currently is).  See scan image for rough sketch of proposed electrical floor plan (ignore birds, I was using scrap paper).  I realize if I were to relocate it off to the side, I'd need to drill through studs and make more more holes in the wall, but that's fine, as I was thinking of creating storage space between the studs anyway. I'm planning on replacing the current sink light fixture with either a) another wall fixture in the same location, b) 2 separate wall fixtures, one above each sink, or c) 3 separate wall sconces, a leftmost one, a center, and a rightmost one.  I haven't decided on what will look and function the best.   I'm sure there was a much more succinct way of asking this question and describing my situation, but I am clueless about electricity and wiring and whatnot.  Despite my inexperience and ignorance I still feel like this is a task I'm capable of, but I'd like to seek the guidance of you wonderful Instructables' folks on how to do this.  I'd like to know where you think the outlet(s) should go based on the information I provided, and then how I get the power to that outlet without electrocuting myself and frying the house.   * I first was going to say that this attic ceiling outlet is the nearest thing to an adjacent outlet, but I just remembered there's an outlet at the top of the stairs, adjacent to the attic (meaning, not on the other side of a bathroom wall).  The attic ceiling outlet is controlled by a light switch inside attic entrance anyway, and this is an insulated roof wall too.
