It's my birthday today, the 19th of may... I'm 18 and well have been around for around 18 years now. Even jackalopes have birthdays, granted people would find them to be bizarre and fear inducing events we do have them, along with horns. The guys in the chatroom will be glad of this, every time we were talking it's ended up with me launching in to brithday excitement, I didn't have much of one last year so... It's also coming up on my instructabirthday... I know it was absolutely childish to have a forum post but who cares...

So, I just checked my persona settings... it said my birthday was april 30, 1986 ... i'm may 30, 1986. so I go to change it... when the date is changed, i see birthday changed to 30-06-1986... the sixth month is NOT may... someone made the list either indexed the default value as 1, or they started the numbering with 2... either-way... can someone fix my birthday?

Today, while looking at my profile, I realized that the date under "member since" said "Dec 17 2012". So today is my first Instructable birthday!!! What a year! My first year as an instructabler has been amazing. Who would have thought that a website could change someone's life? It did to me, and I really mean it. If it wasn't for this site's push, I doubt that I would have made so many things. I am the kind of person who wants to do a million things but is too lazy to even start one. But here I am, looking at all the projects I made in just one year and I can hardly believe it. They are more than the amount of projects I made in 20 years! Creating is the best thing in the world and this is what I want to do in my life. Thank you Instructables for helping me realize that. But most of all, I want to say a BIG thank you to the Instructables HQ because this great community wouldn't exist without you. You are wonderful! And another big thank you to all my new instructables friends. Your support and kindness means so much to me! I had never seen such a friendly community anywhere else. I am so happy and proud to be part of it! All of you inspire me to make more and more. I look forward to spending another great year in this creative place with you! :) Linda

We celebrated Corwin's birthday in the tower at Squid Labs yesterday, and, while up there, fixed up the flag poles and hung a pirate flag. I think it's admirable that we had at least 3 months of a "professional" looking fascade before our true colors bled through. Or, maybe it was just laziness...More pictures here.

It's quite appropriate, given the recent spate of spam threads, to find out that this weekend is the thirtieth anniversary of the first spam email:The first recognisable e-mail marketing message was sent on 3 May, 1978 to 400 people on behalf of DEC - a now-defunct computer-maker.The message was sent via Arpanet - the internet's forerunner - and won its sender much criticism from recipients..........The sender of the first junk e-mail message was Gary Thuerk and it was sent to advertise new additions to DEC's family of System-20 minicomputers. It invited the recipients, all of whom were on Arpanet and lived on the west coast of the US, to go to one of two presentations showing off the capabilities of the System-20.Reaction to the message was swift, with complaints reportedly coming from the US Defense Communications Agency, which oversaw Arpanet, and took Mr Thuerk's boss to task about it. So, how do you plan to celebrate?BBC storyAnother article, including the actual message

OK, so it's hard to do an impression of Marylin Monroe in a topic title.Today, is, according to google, the anniversary of the invention of the laser. First demonstrated in 1960, it was known as a solution looking for a problem - everybody agreed it was clever, but it took some time before it saw a practical use. Now, every single "western" home has at least a handful of lasers, ad they have seen duty everywhere from art to war, via medicine and astronomy.Time to have a quick review of how this tricksie piece of hardware (especially the LED variety) has been treated by our members: Laser-based projects.Laser vortex from this InstructableGoogle's laser results

It's time for EFF's 17th birthday party! They're a great organization, worthy of a donation even if you can't make the party in person. From their website:Join EFF in celebrating our 17th year of defending digital rights! Since 1990, EFF has been there fighting for freedom and civil liberties. The birthday bash will be on January 15, 7-11 PM, at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. Headliners Adrian & the Mysterious D (A+D), the DJ duo that founded the seminal mashup party "Bootie," will be dropping a shameless, genre-smashing blend of tracks, backed up by DJ sets from Bay Area copyfighters Ripley, Kid Kameleon and EFF's own J Tones and Qubitsu. The EFF party will also feature an exclusive chocolate sampling with TCHO, "a new chocolate company for a new generation of chocolate enthusiasts." Founded by Wired co-founder Louis Rossetto and legendary chocolatier Timothy Childs, himself a former technologist, TCHO will be bringing a "beta release" of its best dark chocolate to the party table. Attendees are invited to vote for their favorite TCHO beta chocolate flavors at the party -- feedback that will help define TCHO's next steps as they gear up for a national release. We'll be asking for a $20 donation at the door. My son will be 16 next Monday. He has always been fascinated by lights. I thought about getting him the stuff needed to do all those really cool LED projects but they sound pretty complicated. He doesn't have a soldering iron etc. We have normal tools like screwdrivers etc. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. Thanks, Naomi

OK, first I want a hover car, but then I sort of run out of ideas. You get to my age, been independent for quite a while, there's not much stuff that I actually need. There's not even very much more that I want in life. But, people have started asking me what I want for my (say it calmly) fortieth birthday in just over three months. So, I've decided to have a shed-themed birthday list. Tools, materials, kits and what-not.Any suggestions that I can tell She Who Must Be Obeyed so that she can pretend to conspire with my family and arrange "surprise" presents?

I have a record-able birthday card for a project i'm working on. it uses the speaker as the mic so its easy enough to wire that to a headphone jack and record sound from the computer, but my problem is that i didn't check the card before i bought it and after it plays the noise you have recorded it plays a prerecorded song. how do i modify it so i can remove or change the prerecorded song that plays after my own recording?

So, yeah! I just realized that I've been a member of the community for over a year! A lot's been happened, but I just wanna say I'm glad for joining I'bles. When I first joined, I never thought I would become an overall well-known regular on this website, but I did, so that's awesome, I guess. Thanks to Eric for making this wonderful website, the I'bles team for being really cool and helpful admins, and to all the friends I've gained on this website. I would like to thank these friends of mine in particular:DJ Radio: Thanks for keeping it real with me, man. You're one of the first people I befriended with here on I'bles and also the best one. Continue keeping it real, brah!Berkin: You're awesome, period. Your ideas are just great and I would like to thank you for helping me with various problems I face in real life.bkreed: HAI HAI! THXMUCH FOR EVRYTHANG *GLOMPS*! Seriously though, you're just great. I really like how you can instantly spice up a boring chat just-like-that. You're the coolest dudette friend I have, better than the ones I have in real life. *GLOMPS AGAINZZ* The Jamalam: Thanks for cheering me up with your awesome jokes and antics and standing up to me in arguments. Also thanks for being a really good friend ever since the first few weeks I started I'bles. HAZPIE! (I'm sorry whoever you are if you're not included here. I think all my friends are cool, it's just that I never did get to know you better, I guess.)Oh yeah, I would also like to apologize to all the people I've dissed on I'bles, Lithium Rain and Keith-Kid in particular, because I attacked both of you even though I have nothing against you two (wait, cross that. I was really ticked of at Keith at the moment, but using Lithium as a subject for inappropriate jokes directed at Keith is just wrong and immature). Sorry again to everyone else, my attitude is just part of who I am and I can't change that. And lastly, I would also like to thank everyone who thinks my homemade weapons are cool. Thank you very much, the compliments meant a lot to me.So, yeah! Thank you to all of you for making these two years a very valuable and enjoyable one.Best Regards,Izanagi Telos.

Yes, today is my birthday. I am 14. I have a cake and everything. I was gonna post a gun to concide with this event but unfortunately I couldn't finish it in time. Oh well. *Update* To coincide with my birthday, I will not read any PM unless it has "To his majesty, the Honorable DJ Radio" in the subject line until March 15, 2010, 14 days from now. The only exceptions are staff and replies to PM's I have made before March 1. I'm serious, if you want your PM's read, you have to use that subject line until March 15.

So, soon it will be my 18th Birthday and instead of going out for a meal I have decided that I want to host a Nerf gun war of sorts. A while back me and some friends had a small nerf battle in my attic which was a success-ish. Really what I would like to do is to try to generate some game types as although firing at everyone is fun, I think rules need to be implemented. I plan to invite around 15-20 people and host it at the local scout hut as I helped out with the Beaver section there for a time. Some ideas I've had are team deathmatch, capture the flag and zombies, if anyone has tried out anything like this any feedback on how it went, or ideas of rules would be great, Thanks in advance, Jack

Originally I thought I would make some cupcakes, but I think there might be too many people. Any ideas? doesn't have to be limited to food. Many thanks!!

My daughter gave me a talking birthday card. I thought it would be neat to reprogram it to say something else and give it back to her. The card has a little printed circuit board(1 1/8" X 1 1/8"), a small speaker ( 1 1/2" approx.), and a flat battery (like a watch).

Ok, This is a bit of a crisis. My oldest son, Skunkpunk, turns 15 today! I turned 37 last week. I'm feeling OLD. I only realized that I was no longer a teenager a couple of years ago, and now I'm having to deal with being a parent of a teen. For me, 15 was a big year. Learning to drive, my first serious girlfriend, etc. I'm not ready to deal with Skunkpunk's teenage-roller-coaster. So anyway, If anyone has any advice for us we could use it. I need advice on how to parent a teen, and he needs advice on how to survive the teen years.
