Bold Backspace Bug

Whenever i'm editing an instructable, if i hit bold, (that word gave me much aggravation) then delete a word, the cursor jumps around all over the paragraph i'm writing.

Using bold automatically inserts spaces

I did a quick search and didn't see anything, so my apologies if this has already been reported: I am finding whenever I use bold to highlight words in my documents, an empty space is getting automatically inserted at the end of the word. For example, if I end this sentence with a word in bold and the turn off bold before using the period, there will end up being a space between the last word and the period which I did not put there and can not remove.

CIY: Bold Flower Necklace

Growing up I use to love playing with Play-Doh.  Something about the color, the texture, and the smell.  Oh, the smell… I remember I use to play with this contraption that I would attach little people to, that had holes in the tops of their heads.  I would crank a lever and the little people would grow Play-Doh hair.  I had hours of entertainment cutting and re-growing hair.  Ipad what? Oh, how entertaining kids has changed. I never imaged that I would get the chance to play with clay again in my thirties.  To create my Oscar de la Renta look I decided to grab some clay and go to town.  Unfortunately this clay did not have the Play-Doh smell I remember, but I still had just as much fun creating with it. Bold writing on my images for an Instructable? Answered

This is a question for wilgubeast, shoochmaroo, kazmataz, Carleyy, mikasaurus, frenzy, and all the other awesome members of Instructables. I want to put bold lettering in my images like in the images in Instructables in the eBook for Unusual Uses for Ordinary Things. How do I accomplish this? Is it a photoshop trick, Special program, or do you have to work at Instructables to have this privilege?

Text display in Instructable PDFs

Why is the kerning (inter-character) spacing of the text in Instructables' PDFs so goofy? Not any of the heads, but all the text. I'm using Mac OS X 10.5 and the text font used is identified as Helvetica Condensed Bold Italic. Heads are Helvetica Bold (not Condensed) and they do display correctly. I do not have any problem on my system with Helvetica Condensed Bold Italic used in any other document and no problem with numerous PDFs from other sources. And, why not a simple Arial or Helvetica Regular or Plain for the text anyhow?

A small display bug:The fonts for "user name" and "inbox" in the upper-right hand corner of the top banner display inconsistently. Normally they are bold, but when viewing an instructable, they loose the bold attribute. They remain reversed (white), on the orange BG. The links still work fine.Firefox "logout" and "Help" links also show the same behavior....(although they are not reversed.)

What is the first thing you look at in a website?

I am redesigning my website (again) but this time I am doing it all myself. No Wordpress or phpBB involved this time!! And this year in my Computing class, I have learned a fair bit on contrast, hierarchy, and how to lay website elements out proportionally. Have a look at what I've made so far: (all the links are dummies, and the navibar has a couple of bugs in it). However I want to find out what people first look at, when they visit a new website. Is it a big banner, bright colours, a logo, an annoying 10min Flash intro? For instance, what first catches your eye on crime: ?

Nutty, wild, possibly illegal but bold idea: TV channel change prank

Materials: High output IR light/beacon Power source Cable tv remote or equivalent code sender High altitude urban viewpoint Stealth attire The basic scheme is to send out a high output IR signal from this beacon to cable boxes to switch channels .  The signal would be bright enough to reflect into any facing windows and reach the cable box IR receiver. It might hopefully affect tv's within a radius of a mile? Or more! If performed at a certain appointed time, say, at the beginning of the Super Bowl, to tune in to, say, the History Channel, it's possible the effect will show up in the Neilson ratings as a momentary blip, before annoyed football fans switch their tv's back. Guerrilla social mischief. If successful. Thanks.

I built an ionizer in an old metal ATX power supply case. My electricity is 230V 50Hz. It uses 22x 2.2nF capacitors and 22x 1N4007 diodes. The circuit is about this(with the activity indicator). I also added a small unregulated non-switching power supply for a fan that: cools the transformer forces air through the 5 needles. The ionisation current calculates to 5uA/needle. or 25uA total. Hotmail formatting problem - a question from my mother. Answered

My mother uses Hotmail (Windows, IE), and is having an issue with formatting.  Whilst typing an email, the formatting buttons (bold, underline etc) do not all work. They are visible, and if you hover the cursor over them they will tell you what they should do, but nothing actually happens. Worse (for her), the emoticon button isn't working either. Click on it, and the selection of emoticons appears, but none will work. Does anybody have a fix that can be described over the phone to a woman near the end of her seventh decade, who refers to the cursor as "the blinky thing", and who has to keep the instructions for cutting and pasting written down beside her computer?

Win a patch, by typing a word! - ANSWERED

Hello everyone. As the title said, you could win a patch. Simply by typing a word. There is only 1 patch up for grabs. You're thinking, oh thats simple, ill just write in any random word. But no... Not just any word. A word that is hidden, in this paragraph below. Its rather hard to find. Can you find it? : One day i was walking home from the pub when i tripped up over a loose paving slab. I had really hurt my knee and it was all cut and bruised. I had to call for someone to help, but there was no one around. I reached into my pocket and called a number on my cellphone. I dialed the number 3146134, this was the number of my family doctor. Hes a really nice guy. He answered the phone with a cheery voice, before slamming it on the table and breaking off the call. I weakly stood up and limped home, but before i coukd get there, i got hit by a car. THE END. I guess you are all wondering what the hidden word is. Well I told you before that it was really hard to figure out. So here is the answer: The family doctor's number was 3146134. Each number corresponded to a letter somewhere in the paragraph. The first number was 31. If you count 31 letters into the paragraph, it is the letter 'B'. The second number was 46. Count the letters and you end up with the letter 'O'. The third number was 13, this was the letter 'L'. And the only number left was number 4, which was a letter 'D'. The special word was 'BOLD'. Yep, bold, that was the hidden word. Now do go flaming me by saying that was too hard, because if you thought about it for a while, you'dve figured it out. Unlucky guys, but i will do another contest to win another patch. STAY TUNED.

Author Spotlight Interviews: Nominate an author!

We recently began a new round of author spotlight interviews. For the first interview, we chose to reach out and chat with Nikus, who recently won the grand prize in this year's Epilog Contest. You can check out our interview here: Author Spotlight: NikusThese interviews are a great way to learn a little more about individual contributing authors here on Instructables, and see what makes them tick! Is there someone who is an active author that you'd be interested in learning more about? Now's your chance to nominate a fellow author. There are no set requirements to be eligible to be nominated. But generally, we're looking for authors who've shared a good handful of high-quality projects, which made a notable splash within the Instructables community. And yes, if you're feeling bold, you may certainly nominate yourself! : )

My first instrucable frustrations! Please help.

Hello luvely people,  Help needed to complete my first instructable. Firstly,  ! began making it on my phone. Which was my only option at the time. It makes loading pictures easy and the app seems to work but I've not been able to  work out how to make italics or bold txt, make points under-line, ect.  Advice on formatting from other Instructables and the web, I  have found, is mostly years old or hasn't worked for some reason.   I wondered if  the phone was the problem and being all enthused by the project by then wanted a proper key board. Which raised a new problem. So, having logged in on both tablet (having installed Instructables app) & now my friend's computer,. My second question is, why can't i see my as yet, unpublished work? Many thanks for your time. Sophie

Stray Cats Strut

Sad to say, a homeowner in the neighborhood takes no care of her cats and, of course, we had a bumper crop of strays for a while until nature and cars took care of most of them.  Two or three full-grown cats from the original litters are now quite healthy and roam our neighborhood freely.  As I have two indoor/outdoor cats, the "Wilds" have decided to take our yard as their own and you all know how cats mark their territory.  Every corner of our house, planters, and bbq has been sprayed as the battle for territory continues.  They're quite bold; I ran into one in our garage!  I'd like an effective, safe, non-painful (and entertaining, if possible) way to discourage them from coming into our yard and/or what I can spray over their spray to  nullify their scent.  (Baking soda and water mix, etc.)  I'm not home during the day to "catch" them in the act, I need something long-acting.  Thanks!

I would normally already have half a million ideas for this, but problem is, I'm at an inventor's block. This is where I ask you to come in, I want as many ideas for this as possible, I don't care how ridiculous.  Even if its a car that runs on pigsh*t, I won't mind.  anyway, just food for thought. thanks. ps. if you were one of the the whopping 13 people who viewed my forum topic, yes, this is a repost. Annoying cursor movement when formatting is used

This bug has probably been documented thoroughly, and nearly every single person who writes an instructable must know it by now. When you use italics or bold (I'm sure there's more) when writing, the moment you backspace it goes to the (most previously written) italicized font and backspaces it instead. When you're still writing the word (or phrase) it goes to the back of the word. For someone who is in the middle of writing a massive instructable documenting nearly everything I know in Microsoft's shell scripting, it's very annoying every time I use italics to distinguish between normal writing and code, only to have to rewrite it after backspacing one of my typos. You can recreate this (assuming it happens for more people than just me) by adding a comment, licking on the rich editor, writing some stuff, write in italics and then backspace. I'm using Google Chrome, and I don't think screenshots would help here. Thanks.

A couple of sweet new features

There's a couple of cool new things we just released that you should check out. There's now a tool bar above most of the text boxes that will help you remember the special formatting characters used to modify text. Just highlight the text and go: bold, italics, typed, bolditalics, links, and video, oh my! (Make sure the triple brackets for typed and the text you want formatted that way are all on seperate lines.)Currenly we support embedded video from Google, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Just drop the URL of the video into the Video URL. The default view on the explore page is now a selection of random Instructables. It refreshes about every 10 minutes, so hopefully you'll see a few awesome Instructables you've never seen before.I've managed to find some really great people to help out with the site, so soon we'll be able to start giving you the features you want (I really do read everything in the bugs section!). So, keep your great suggestions coming.

MGS5's iDroid - Can it be Built with Open Source Tech?

I can't get enough of Metal Gear Solid 5! It definitely deserves the 10/10 scores its received! But as cool as it would be to have a giant robot or even a Walker Gear that you and/or your enemies can pilot, I think the coolest thing to have from the game would be the "iDroid". If you havent played "The Phantom Pain" or "Ground Zeroes", the iDroid is a device Snake uses for multiple purposes. Some include: sending radio trasmissions and calling in supply drops or helicopters between the iDroid's location and Mother Base, Displaying a topographical satellite view of the area Snake is in, Organizing Mother Base staff, resources, R&D; projects, and playing music from cassette tapes found while on missions, Just to name a few. (bold font is to differentiate the uses) So is it possible to build a similar device using the open source technology of today? (minus the use of cassette tapes and a 2D holographic projection screen) I'm pretty confident that it can be done, but what do you guys think?

Why can't I edit my draft instructables? Answered

I'm able to create new drafts and insert multiple pages each with titles.  However when I attempt to add text to the body of a page, I'm unable to do most edit functions.  I am really only able to type in a single paragraph.  No "hard returns" are able to be inserted.  When clicking the "enter" key, nothing happens.  I am actually having the problem right now.  The only way I can input information is in one long paragraph.  Interestingly, one time I pasted in a couple paragraphs inside of my single paragraph and was able to operate in multiple paragraphs that way.  This way, I sort of "hijacked" a hard return to get paragraph separation.  Am I crazy?  This happens to me probably 50% of the time.  Other times everything seems to function properly.  Also of note - I'm unable to change the bold once it has been chosen like now.  However, I could insert cursor in a spot earlier and do some creative cut and paste etc..   Any Suggestions.  THANK YOU MUCH FOR BEARING WITH ME HERE!   Bob Z

Need honest opinions on Single Malt Scotches under $100 (Preferably from Scottish folks)

If you recall the dialog from the movie, "My cousin Vinnie," the guy says, "No self respecting southern would eat ready made grits."  There is something to be said about his statement.  It is emphatic and pretty much gives away the sentiment from a southern (USA) point of view. Now relate this to the Single Malts.  Can a statement be made, "No self respecting Scot would drink Glenmorangie," or whatever.  You see, my friends and I are having this perpetual debate over various Scotches, available here in the U.S. and under $100.  One of us made the comment that Macallan is over rated.  Yet, others think that Macallan sets the bar as high as it can be in that price range. No pun intended. My local liquor store carries a fairly good selection.   I notice the following as being bought on a regular basis using a total non-scientific observation: Glenfiddich Glenmorangie Glenlivet Highland Park Macallan Cragganmore Balvenie Cragganmore Springbank Lagavulin Ardbeg Laphroaig So my Scottish friends, please help me out here with your expert opinion on this topic and tell me how you truly feel about these brands.  Make BOLD statements. Thank you.

An ode to bald men

When I was a child, in a galaxy far, far away, during the turbulent times of the 70's, my brother and I watched our little black and white Zenith® TV. I remember watching shows like Kojak, Columbo, The Streets of San Francisco, The Six Million Dollar Man, Police Woman, and many others. I also watched late night movies like Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven. Watching Telly Savalas and Yul Brynner with their manly bald look. Years later when I lost my mane I became inspired by these two actors that shaved their heads during those years. One day I decided to shave whatever little hair I had left and started to proudly show my shiny head. The first day my wife took a good look at me, told me that I looked "sexy". That is when I took her to the eye doctor for a new pair of glasses. I have been showing my baldness proudly for a number of years and I wonder if more of my Instructables brethren share my views. Remember: God made a few perfect heads and the rest He put hair on them.

DM-15 bolt action sniper

Well, all the great K'nex gunners have snipers(besides oodalumps , but his semi-auto makes up for that :-) ), so I thought i would make one. its nothing really new, nothing innovative. Just that it has a bolt to pull back the ram, that allows for rapid fire. It's could be as powerful as the other snipers but i can't put to much power because i have to pull the ram back with one hand(i am wimpy so you guys will have more power). it has a 9 round mag that could be extended if you wanted. Has a block trigger hooked up to a true trigger. The front is just a make barrel. Bipod folds up and hooks onto the front of the fake barrel. i am sorry that the bolt is hard to see in the gun, it on the right side. only the left side is shown in the first two pics. its in the third pic but is kind of hard to see. it works by having a "door" in the side of the barrel for the bold to travel in and out of. the bolt need tape because the orange connectors would come off instead of pulling back the ram(the ram is the same from the pack sniper). it has just your basic scope on it, nothing to new on that part. yea, i think thats it. instructions are being made.

Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened.

I just spent the last 2 days authoring a new Instructable and struggling, as always, with the abominable editor on this site. This time I did as much as possible in a text editor, including using HTML tags for images uploaded to my account, and for bold fonts, and anchor links with text. I selected the mandatory cover image, which was all cut off BTW, entered keywords, and hit Publish both times and the second time I got the obnoxious: "Oops! We couldn't understand your request. Please contact us to tell us as much detail as possible about what you were trying to do when this happened." To say this is frustrating would be like saying that a sharp stick in the eye was a little annoying. So what's going on this time? Is it the HTML tags which the preview shows as working flawlessly? Are any of these tags banned? If so, why doesn't the message just say so instead of kicking me in the n…, u-h-h, face without offering any help? I couldn't find anyone to contact either, hence this post. Firefox 33.0.2, OS X 10.8.5, javascript enabled And no it doesn't work any better in Safari.

Issue with line spacing in lists

I'm having a really annoying issue with formatting while writing Instructables. I'm sure someone else has complained before, but there's little else for me to do besides bringing attention to the issue. When writing instructables on a PC (Chrome, Windows 10), I'm having very annoying issues with line spacing when copying paste from another window. Most of the time it is simply copying text from some prior instructable I've wrote. It is especially problematic in lists. The issue is that sometimes the spacing between lines doubles after copying text, and even in subsequent lines the issue persists. This makes consistent formatting impossible. It seems to be due to copying the text from other formatted sources, but there are still conflicts when I try to copy and paste unformatted text. I'm not exactly sure what the trigger for the issue is. I have posted an image where no space between lines exists for the first 3 bullets of the list, but for the following lines (after pasting the third bullet point), all the spacing is double spaced. It does appear that it shows correctly (consistent formatting) when the instructable is posted and viewed online from a PC, but when viewed on a mobile device, the formatting gets messed up again and shows inconsistently. The issue also seems to sometimes involve different font sizing. Anyway, I just wanted to mention this since I'm finding it very annoying. I'd want to be able to have more control on the formatting, and also being able to copy formatted text (bold, underline...) from other prior instructables. But for the moment with just not having to deal with the line spacing option I'd be satisfied.

The classic IRFP250N vs FDP33N25? Which one is best for high power SMPS? Answered

I have an idea to start selling some powermax singing arc kits. In the kit I plan to include all the parts including a printed PCB to create an audio modulated flyback driver. I figure to start off with, since I have no clue what demand would be, I want to play it safe and only get enough parts for 10 - 25 quantity, which works out to be about $40, or about $4 a piece, not including custom PCBs. However, at >$2, the IRFP250 is not cheap even in 10's of quantities on Digikey. Looking to shave off pennies, I found the FDP33N25 for about half the cost of the classic IRFP250N and best part is that it appears to have simalar specs, and in some ways it looks like the FDP33N25 is even better! Bolded parameters are the (I think) prefered values. I do not know much about selecting the best transistor for the job, but I did compare the specs below: IRFP250N: 85mΩ Rds ON, 30A, 200Vds, 2800pf gate capacitance, TO-247, 0.65 *C/W FDP33N25: 94mΩ Rds ON, 33A, 250Vds, 2135pf gate capacitance, TO-220, 0.80 *C/W One thing I am concerned about power loss and therefore switching speed, so the MOSFET must be driven with a 15KHz to 40KHz square wave with very sharp rise and fall speeds. I was able to reduce power dissipation in my last circuit by simply shortening the wire carrying the signal to the gate, as well as adding a complementary pair of NPN and PNP transistors to the output of the 555 timer. That seemed to lower the drive impedance and switch the mosfet more rapidly, but considering that I still need to use active cooling and a brick sized heatsink, I think I can do better. Any suggestions?

arduino button problems, again

I have a problem with two buttons and a RGB LED. I want the two buttons to be pressed and then the brightness decreases/increases but it isn't working. When i press it, it decreases it but then it doesn't do it again. Any help would be appreciated. Code included below (problem is in bold) : int button = 8; int button_two = 7; int redPin = 6; int greenPin = 5; int bluePin = 3; int val = 0; int val_two = 0; int numb = 0; int r = 0; int g = 0; int b = 0; int i = 0; void setup() {   pinMode(redPin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(greenPin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(bluePin, OUTPUT);   pinMode(button, INPUT);   pinMode(button_two, INPUT);   Serial.begin(9600); } void loop() {   val = digitalRead(button);   val_two = digitalRead(button_two);     if (val == HIGH && val_two == LOW && numb < 7) {     numb++;     delay(300);     } else if (val_two == HIGH && val == LOW && numb > 1) {     numb--;     delay(300);     } else {     numb=numb;   }     if (numb == 1){       r = 255;       g = 255;       b = 255;   }   if (numb == 2){       r = 255;       g = 0;       b = 0;   }   if (numb == 3){       r = 0;       g = 255;       b = 0;   }   if (numb == 4){       r = 0;       g = 0;       b = 255;   }   if (numb == 5){       r = 255;       g = 255;       b = 0;   }    if (numb == 6){       r = 255;       g = 0;       b = 255;   }    if (numb == 7){       r = 0;       g = 255;       b = 255;   }   if (val == HIGH && val_two == HIGH) {       int r_cal = r / 5;     int g_cal = g / 5;     int b_cal = b / 5;         r = r - r_cal;     g = g - g_cal;     b = b - b_cal;   Serial.println(r);   Serial.println(g);   Serial.println(b);   delay(300);   } else {     val == LOW;     val_two == LOW;   }   analogWrite(redPin, r);   analogWrite(greenPin, g);   analogWrite(bluePin, b); }

24 x 24 LED Matrix Project

I would like to share with you all an awesome project and some doubts and questions related to the same. This is a 24 x 24 LED Matrix project taken from here. All the data is taken from the same link. 24×24 LED dot matrix -->   This is pretty old circuit but I found it interesting to describe here. 24×24 LED display is formed by using 9 8×8 Dot LED matrix displays, that are connected to AT90S2313 MCU. MCU scans an indicator lines in series. Special PC program is written which allows drawing images on screen and transfer them via COM port to device. You can send images in series what gives an animation effect.   Circuit is was built using obsolete AT90S2313 MCU which can be replaced by Attiny2313 MCU with minor modifications of firmware. To make program work you event don’t need to connect device to computer COM port. You can store images in other master MCU EEPROM memory Each received byte from UART is immediately sent to 8 LEDs, second byte to next 8 LEDs and so on. Bytes has to be sent one by one without delay. USART is working at 115200 baud, 8bits, no parity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE PROBLEMS >1>I really dont know if the circuit is good or not tell me if it is going to work. >2>I cant get 8x8 dot matrix displays so i am going to normal leds to a 24x24 one. >3>I have never worked with bus before (the bold red lines in the circuit) so i dont know how to connect it. >4>The schems are segmented i am finding it hard to figure out how to connect some of the segments. >5>Also i need to know how to hook it up to my pc. >6>I have never done programming so i need to know how to program the ic. THANK YOU I couldnt get the images uploaded nicely so i linked them. 1 2
