Book Contest

Just curious about the rules of the book contest (and other contests) I noticed that Kipkay has some of his instructables entered in the book contest. Just wondering since Kipkay works for Make if this was entirely fair; I mean most contests don't allow people even remotely affiliated with the entity running the contest to participate. Not saying that I necessarily have a problem with it; just pointing it out.

Where's The Book?

This is actually my first post in anything (forums or the actual site). You guys mention a upcoming book in the group's intro, coming out in September of 2007. Well here it is in December and no book. Has it fallen through? Are you looking for a new publisher, cause I've notice that Reaganbooks hasn't had anything new in months. Plus, I've also noticed that the forums (for HSC) haven't been updated in over a year.

Electronics Book

I want to start a few projects using a Arduino board and know what I'm going to do. The problem is I do not understand some concepts and parts with electronics. I was woundering if anyone could recomend a decent Electronics Book to help me grasp concepts and what specific parts do. Try to keep it in the $20 range because I have a gift card to amazon. Once I document my project I'll do an instructable.

Print to... a book?

I have access to a printer, which can print on standard paper - but that's not what I want. There are publishing houses (and Instructables!) that can print my text in a bound book - but that's not quite what I want, either (not yet!) What I want is: a printer, that can take an empty, bound book (Moleskine for example)... and print in it. Without damaging the book! Has anyone made,or bought, such a printer? At first I thought it would need to be some form of XY plotter, but a normal print head should do the job. The trick would be setting the page limits, holding the unused portion of the book, and to start the print at the spine.

Books on electronics?

Hey guys, ive been a big fan of the site for a long time but have only just signed up. I just wondered if anyone could recommend to me some good books/guides on basic electronics and circuit building. Iv always been interested in the way electronic devices work and after viewing some cool looking instructables on here decided i want to try and learn about how to make them. It is also fueled by my interest in physics which i want to pursue in university. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Instructables Book

We've published a book of Instructables!Order your copy of The Best of Instructables Volume 1 here!See the latest news about The Best of Instructables Volume 1 here.I just got the contract worked out with O'Reilly Media/MAKE, who is publishing the book. Details are still being finalized, but the book will look something like this: 75 (maybe?) full Instructables and 50 (maybe?) mentions (author, intro image and text maybe?) of Instructables in a community-choice section. The Instructables in the community-choice section will be chosen by a month-long contest open to Instructables published at any point in the past. The top Instructables by votes in the contest will be included. The full Instructables will be chosen by the people at Instructables, the O'Reilly and MAKE editors, and using the results of the book contest. If your project is selected, we'll ask for your permission and give you a free copy of the book. We're hoping to have it out in time for the Austin Maker Faire in October. These details are likely to change, but I'm so excited that I wanted to share them even at this early stage. We'll do a formal announcement when we know more, so consider this your sneak-preview. Updated: Number of full Instructables from 100 to 75. 2008-07-03 Update: Right now, it looks like we'll be including approximately 50 Instructables in the community choice section of the book as chosen by our Instructables Book Contest. This section will have 8-10 Instructables per page and each Instructable will have the author, title, intro text and image. Everyone mentioned will receive a free copy. As usual we'll be eliminating fraudulent votes.75 full Instructables will be included as chosen by editors at Instructables, MAKE, and O'Reilly. Obviously, we'll be watching the results of the contest closely to make sure we didn't miss anything!Since print and internet are such different mediums, part of the selection process is finding Instructables will exceptional images and well-written text. Since any Instructable can be included, now is a great time to make sure your images are top-notch and maybe add a few more, if you can. 2008-09-01 Update: If your Instructable is in the top 50 sorted by user votes, you are definitely in the community choice section. Depending on how many of those 50 are included as full Instructables in the book, the community choice section may include more Instructables. We are working hard at getting everything organized and ready for the book launch in October.

Book help? Answered

Okay, I have two and a half things I need help with.  One and a half: what would be the name of the virus, and what would the vaccine be called?  I sort of have a name for the disease (The Mexican Bean Virus), but I don't think it sounds very good.  Two:  What is a good place for a government standoff against the zombies? There may be more questions coming, and I will mention the Instructables community in my acknowledgments when the book gets published.

the redundancy of this book

The way i see it, the instructables that will make it into the book will be the all time favorite ones, the ones that i have already seen, i believe the people at instructables should go out and find some original instructables to put in the book not the old ones that everyone has seen. I mean i would like to buy this book, but what would be the point if i have already seen the instructables online? that is where the redundancy lies

Free Books!

Well, today my school's library was getting rid of free books, and me, having a disease that makes me unable to resist free things decided to go. When I went, I found some pretty great books! Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, and Custer's Last Stand, Burma Rifles, and Fire! Its Many Faces and Moods. Schweet.  I'm going to crack open some Verne and figure out what this steampunk is all about... haha Also, Something broke and it kind of erased what I typed earlier, but I got it on my blog, if you want to go, it's here (I apologize for spamming, it's just really late at night and I am a bum.)

We read quite a lot, checking out lots of books from the public library, but we don't add to the "permanent collection" unless the book is of seminal value and we find ourselves checking it out multiple times to re-read. I was wondering if you'd care to share a few books in your "permanent collection." Book Giveaway

Two of my designs were featured in a very cool new book, PlyDesign, 73 Distinctive DIY Projects in Plywood by Philip Schmidt (and published by Storey Publishing). To celebrate (and to thank the instructables community -- without whom these projects would never have been "discovered") I'm giving away a copy.... but to make it interesting, this giveaway will be in the form of an informal contest. Post a comment with a link to your instructable. As long as your project includes plywood (or other sheet goods such as MDF, plyboo, etc) it qualifies. No publishing date restrictions, you can submit any instructable from the very first day instructables went live up to today -- however, choose your favorite instructable, because I will only consider one per person. The contest will close whenever I have 100 entries or on July 31st, 2012, whichever comes first. I will also be giving away a three month pro membership to my favorite instructable submitted by a non-pro member. I look forward to checking out your instructables! UPDATE: Member Makendo has offered another year membership for an instructable by a non-pro! So far I have no comments/instructables by non pros. Show me what you've made and you've got a very good chance at getting a year's worth of free pro membership...

Old How-To Books

I've always been a fan of old how to books. They often have tips and techniques you don't find in contemporary books. Sometimes they are just plain strange. Other times they are painfully outdated, like an old Popular Mechanics article I came across that shows you how to improve your toaster by adding asbestos to it. Last weekend I stumbled upon this old doll making book at a thrift store. The entire book shows how to make dolls in a kind of odd folk art style, and would never get printed today. In spite of the fact I don't really have room for more books right now, I couldn't help myself and bought it anyhow.Has anyone else come across any interesting how to books lately, or have favorite classics in their collection?

The Book - a problem, and a solution

I just spent.. far too long going through the list of the entries for The Book. There are nearly 2000 entries. That's nearly a hundred pages to look through when dishing out your vote. There will inevitably be some people who lose out badly because their projects are so far down the list that people simply get tired before they get to the end and give up.I propose that the voting page for this exceptional contest be arranged an exceptional way - all on one page.A single list of smaller-than-usual thumbnails, with the title beside and a vote / unvote button or tick-box beside that. That way, all people have to do (all?!?) is scroll down a single page and click away.It would also be nice if that list could be re-arranged in order of votes / views / stars.

Book cover Hinge

Hey all. First time poster here (second attempt, since Instructables stopped responding the first time) so hopefully I am posting in the appropriate place. I have in mind a leather-book-style cover for my tablet that I'm very excited to work on. However, I would like to use friction or torque hinges to position the cover at any angle  from the spine in a 180 degree radius and have it stay there, similar to the screen of a laptop rotating around the hinge. I've included a picture that shows the basic design that I'm aiming for, though the hinge itself doesn't need to be ornate. Unfortunately, I don't really know where to find such a thing. I've looked on various furniture hardware sites and taken a trip to the local hardware/home improvement stores, but I haven't found anything that matches what I'm looking for. Common small brass butt hinges would be ideal if they had friction/torque properties to them, but I can't seem to find anything like that. I've never looked for specific hinges before though, so for all I know they've been right in front of my and I didn't realize what they were. Does anyone know where I can find such hinges, or can someone offer up an alternative solution? Perhaps there is a way to add friction to simple hinges bought from a hardware store. Thanks in advance for pointers/advice.

MP3 books to ZUNE

I just got a Zune, I like to listen to recorded books while I work, which is reasonably easy to do with the Zune interface software and most books on CD. THE PROBLEM is books recorded as MP3 files. Strangely enough here is an "MP3 Player" that cannot handle MP3 data directly... At least this is my experience so far. Placing a MP3 recorded book CD in the drive and while I CAN listen to it on the laptop using Zune's Software interface. Trying to transfer the files to the Zune unit creates error files that are unusable and so far I have not been able to remove from the Zune. Admittedly I'm a newbe to the Zune but have been using computers since the Atari 800 came out too many years ago for me to admit to...ANY help would be appreciated. Possibly there's something I just have not found as yet.

Mini-book pin's

Okay, so I'm trying to make some mini-book pin's. Well actually I'm not sure it's actually called "pin's" in English... it's a thing that was popular in the 90's (in France at least), a decorative object with a pin on the back and a kind of clip to attach it to clothing. I've found a picture on wikipedia, but it's really, really bad quality and I'm not sure it will help : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Pins01.JPGSooo... since I ruined my girlfriend's one when I put it with her clothes in the washing machine, I thought I could try to do one my self... shouldn't be too hard, heh ?But my problem is : I have some thin paper for the pages, and nice leather-like paper for the cover, but I have no idea how to glue the pages together, because the mini-book needs to be openable like a real book. I tried some "2 coat rubber cement" I got here but it just doesn't work... I don't have a glue gun but I think maybe it is the kind of thing I need. You see, the glue has to be solid enough to form the spine of the book.Anyone has an idea about what I should do (I hope I've been clear enough) ?One problem I'm thinking of, too, is that the book has to stay well closed unless you really want to open it.Anyway, thanks

Book for learning Spanish

I've always wanted to learn Spanish, or some other language, but especially Spanish because when I took Mexico in Grade 2, I found that the language was super similar to English, and would be easy to learn. But I don't know where to start. I want to use a book, not a website because I don't want to be on the computer any more than I already am (which is already most of the day), and reading for hours in front of my desktop PC is not fun. I don't know which book to get though. I would like one on the Mexican variant though. There's a Mexican variant, right? I mean, they are on opposite sides of the planet, there's got to be some variation. The thing is, everybody in my family is going to say "ooohhh you're learning Spanish!" and then they're all going to tell me to say something like Antonio Banderas, and they're going to keep bothering and making fun of me because I'm supposedly smart because I'm always thinking and making stuff and doing stuff like this and it's NEVER GOING TO END.So I don't know if I'm actually going to get the book. Probably not, but I still want to know what to get.KTHX?
