Boot disk error?

I recently built two computers with amd fx-4300 processors, geforce 650 ti video cards, generic 4Gb memory, generic power supplies and GIGABYTE 78LMT-S2P motherboards. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on the systems and began installing various programs I needed. When I was done for the day I shut down the computers and turned off the powerstrip. The next day when I went to start them up, I was getting a boot error. After inserting an Ubuntu live disk into the computer, I checked the hard drive, which opened up no problem and still contained all of the files from the os. The rule out the software I was installing, I reinstalled Linux on both computers, and rebooted, after which point there seemed to be no problem, until I turned off the powerstrip again and I got another boot error when I went to turn them back on. Thinking it might be the disk I was using to install linux, I burned another disk with the same os and tried that, and the problem persisted. The fact that it happened on both systems leads me to beleive that it isnt a hardware defect, but possibly and incompatibility between hardware parts, or a bios issue. Has anyone else ever encountered a situation like this where the os doesn't load after the power supply is switched on and off? If so, what causes it and what can I do to fix it? Edit: It seems that it actually fails to boot every time it is shut down, though it works fine when it is only rebooted. Edit#2: Interestingly enough, if i run a hard disk check from the live dvd, and then reboot with the disk in, it loads from the hard drive, but then after the next shutdown, it does the same thing Edit#3: After doing a disk check and it says no errors, it says to click a button to reboot. When I do this it gives me this message after it reboots, "Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /. Press F to attempt to fix the errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting, or M for manual recovery" on the one computer I hit f to automatically fix it, which isn't a permanent fix because the drive coninues to have problems, but will boot after i hit f, and then not after i shutdown again. On the other computer, I hit m, and it gave me the message, "Root filesystem check failed. A maintanence shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system." The shell is from the hard drive, not the cd.

Disk boot error? Answered

Last night, I wanted some files off my laptop drive, so I stuck it in an external enclosure and plugged it into my desktop (whilst on). I then turned off the desktop without unplugging my laptop drive and turned it on again today, forgetting to unplug it. I have USB booting enabled, so it tried to boot from the laptop drive and as I was out of the room when it was booting, it entered the recovery partition as the hardware is incompatible. I have done this before, so I just turned off my computer, unplugged the drive, and restarted. Instead of booting from my primary internal drive, it got stuck on the post screen. It detected it, but wouldn't go any further. I then thought that it was still looking for the USB drive, so changed the boot order and removed usb boot, same problem. Removing my primary drive just returned the error "disk boot error, insert boot drive and press enter to continue", so I inserted the primary hard drive (I have it in a hot-swap bay, so it can easily be removed, although being my primary hard drive, not "hot"). After doing so, it kept returning a similar error. I then figured that it was still looking for my laptop drive as a primary boot device, so I cleared CMOS with the jumper and after setting it up again, disabling every other bootable interface except the sata port my primary drive is connected to, and it still just gets stuck on post. I have left it about 10 mins and still get the same problem. It is also hard to enter BIOS or any of the other utilities, as it waits until after post, so I have to either remove all drives or insert the laptop drive in it's enclosure. How can I get my desktop to boot from the primary hard drive again? Inserting the install disk is also hard, because I don't actually have a DVD drive yet, so I installed Windows 7 extended trial through a memory stick from my laptop with a disk drive. I have since deleted it off my memory stick, and my laptop is now in pieces hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse instead of my desktop. It is on it's back and the hard drive bay is open in case I need it again. My BIOS is award with additional features on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 board. Both drives are Hitachi sata-II drives, one being 3.5" and one being 2.5".

Dual Boot

I was following the instructions on apcmag for dual booting XP and Vista with Vista installed first and ran into a problem. Once I had gotten to the part about adding an entry for XP to easybcd I got stuck. The drive letter selection was grayed out. I added XP to the list anyway, and went into change settings. I set XP to the correct drive letter there, but when I rebooted and selected XP from the menu, I got a ntldr error immediately. Any help would be much appreciated.

No active partition error

I decided to try ubuntu on the p2, and each time I tried to install it, it got up to the root file system mount process, it stalls out, on both the 6.06 and 7.04 version. Now I can't even boot off the cd, it just fails at the cd boot and gives me a "Not found any [active partition] in HDD" then says " Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" I found this rather puzzleing as I just formated the disk on another computer and it's fine.

I have a published Collection and I'm trying to add additional instructables to it. I'm receiving an error when trying add (and it has an ironic checkmark to boot!) Hi3516 Access Root Error

First, I apologize for my english. I have a camera module with hi3516 SoC and have to access to hi3516 as root. But I couldn't that. If I begin to explain from start. I had an IPC, extracted it and now I have 3 modules (camera module, ir cut module and power / api module). I found 3 holes on camera module, these are GND, Rx and Tx. I soldered them with 3 female jumper cables and connect to ftdi module. I used micro USB to USB for ftdi-pc connection. Powered up camera module with 12V. In while, I download a program, what name is coolterm, to my pc. I opened coolterm and set baud rate to 115200 (hi3516 standard). Camera module booted up. I pressed a button when I see "Hit any key to stop autoboot: 1" text. Until here I followed an article and everything is fine. But that article says "You have to press enter after to type "root" to gain shell access" and I can't access shell when type "root". I got an error like "Unknown command 'root' - try 'help'". Hi3516 has embedded linux os. Article Link: Any ideas to help me?

Powered up camera module with 12V. I open advanced ip scanner(for detect ip address of camera module) and putty when camera module booted up. I typed ip address of camera in host name or ip address box and select telnet in connection type. Then, I clicked open button. A console window came to my screen when putty configration closed and I typed username and password correctly. But I got a warning when I typed right username and password. Hard Drive Failure Advice? Answered

Our family PC was on and running today, but when I left for a minute and came back; it was at a pure black screen that simply said "Hard Drive Failure" (similar to below, substituting my message in quotes). When I tried to reboot, it got stuck at the "Dell" startup screen, and wouldn't boot into the HDD from BIOS; although it did recognize it. Powered it off, left it for an hour; and it booted up. However, it did hit a "Windows Error Recovery" screen, and has been for a while now upon a boot up here and there. The computer is three years old. Should I ignore it, or replace it (the HDD) asap? My guts say better safe than sorry, but extra input couldn't hurt anyway.

Computer hard drive wiping problems

Hi, I have a  custom made computer that has gotten very corrupt (viruses, useless crap, etc.) over the years, and I would like to erase the hard drive. I've tried stuff like Dban (Darik's boot and nuke), only for some reason, when I try to boot from the cd, it just gives me an error like "ERROR CANNOT BOOT FROM CD".  No, I don't have the Windows XP install disk, or any other installation disks. I haven't used it in years, so I don't remember the password. What I'm asking is, is there any way to erase the hard drive without having to get into the account. By the way, yes, I know I would need the XP disk if I were to install XP after, but instead I'm going to install Ubuntu. I can't even boot from the Ubuntu disk, I've tried it. Thanks in advance.

*UPDATE: AAARRRGGGG ! Looks Like my BOOT got a hole in it.......

Soooo, I guess I am buying a new HD.   So far all attempts to boot the machine to Windows has left me with ChkDsk looping on an error it can not fix.  If I could just get Ubuntu to boot to ROOT so I can transfer all my admin files, I wouldn't care so much abouit losing the HD.   So far, I've spent a full 12 hours working on it......I even did a full "restore" from the repair disk.....nothing changed, but nothing failed during the something is not quite right. This also means I will be on line in a MUCH more limited fashion than before. Replaced the HD.....had a LOT of problems until  I realized the machine still saw the old drive and kept trying to run CHKDSK on it.    New HD 320gb installed an up.....tomorrow, we deal with installing the firewall, and maybe, if I have some time,  a few other things  (like a word processor, etc).    What a day its been though !  I STILL can't get ON LINE at home....not from windows anyways.....still no firewall.....sigh...this is gettin ridiculous...

Has anyone seen this problem? Ram upgrade makes Windows 7 unbootable

I have a notebook that is only a few years old running Win 7 64 bit pro. It works perfectly (which by itself is a little unusual). I decided to upgrade the RAM from 2 sticks of 2 gig to 2 sticks of 8 gig which would give me 16. I bought the exact same speed, latency, everything. The notebook has no problem with it, BIOS pick it up the way it should. I booted Knoppix off a DVD and ran that and it works perfect, no errors, crashes nothing. So it appears the RAM is good. But when I try to boot windows it crashes. It locks up when it is at the very first screen. It does the same thing in safe mode. I swapped the old ram back in, and it boots with no problem. Other than complaining that it didn't start the last time.  Tried it with just one stick of new ram, crash. Changed slots, crash, changed sticks, crash. Windows will not boot with this RAM in place but the ram runs anything else with no problems. Sooo, anybody out there seen this one?

Has anyone built an NAS before?

I'm trying to build an NAS with a spare computer I have. I'm trying to run Freenas, but every time I try to install the OS, I get a read error: 0x20 The computer in question is an old alienware M9700 my cousin gave me. For some reason, the computer doesn't give me the option to boot from a flash drive, so I assume it can't. So here are my questions: 1. What is this read error I'm getting? I've tried googling it, but I've only gotten very mixed results on it. 2. Is it possible to run Freenas this way? (without a flash drive, via disk) 3. Since the laptop has two SATA ports, could I install the OS to a smaller HDD, and then use the remaining as the storage space? I've been told that you can't install the OS onto the same drive intended for storage.

Upgrading wireless card? Answered

I bought an Atheros wireless-N mini PCI-E card for an HP DV7 series laptop, to replace the Broadcom wireless-G card, however, when installed, I just get a bios error "unsupported network card". I removed it and restarted with the original card and it works fine. I trhen tried installing the card live, and it detected it and installed the software, but then BSOD (my first one for Windows 7 actually), so I swapped back to the original card again. I then installed the card in the secondary bay, live, and it installed the drivers successfully, but when swapped with the original card again (the wires don't reach to the other bay), it failed to boot again. How can I replace the original card?

Piping audio from mpg321 to PiFmRds

I was working on a little project that turns my Raspberry Pi 2 into a FM transmitter. The goal is to make it completely headless, having it start up immediately on boot, without any external computers or peripherals. Now, I have tried this following command: mpg321 --random /home/pi/music/ -  | sudo /home/pi/PiFmRds/src/pi_fm_rds -freq 95.5 -audio - The first command tells it to randomize and play the music. Then the directory it is in. Then there is the pipe, followed by the command to start PiFmRds, on the frequency of 95.5 FM. And finally, to take in audio from a pipe. But I get this: High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2, and 3. Version 0.3.2-1 (2012/03/25). Written and copyrights by Joe Drew, now maintained by Nanakos Chrysostomos and others. Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more! THIS SOFTWARE COMES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY! Allocating physical memory: size = 3403776     mem_ref = 5     bus_addr = fd812000     virt_addr = 0x768c8000 ppm corr is 0.0000, divider is 1096.4912 (1096 + 2012*2^-12) [nominal 1096.4912]. It's not showing any errors, but it doesn't tell me a whole lot. Additionally, the radio I have tuned to the frequency that I set does not play anything, though it is silent, suggesting that it is transmitting. Is there some obvious error to what I am doing, or do I need to take a different approach? Or perhaps I just need to look into the documentation of mpg321 some more?

Reveived three copies of a newsletter

Hi guys, I very much enjoy the regular updates of instructables through the newsletters I receive by email. However, upon receiving the same one for the third time today I was wondering if there is any major work being done behind the scenes or whether I stumbled upon a bug, and I though it would be a good idea to submit a bugreport. Hence, this topic. I have attached a small screenshot of my gmail account. (Leaving out the standard layout due to privacy and general negligability..) Of course, I would be more than happy to forward the series of messages to an address if requested. Likewise, I can give my email address when necessary in some private message. The emails all source from < >. I run a windows7, ubuntu dual boot and browse in chrome (version 36.0.1985.125) but these stats seem to be irrelevant as the mail server does not directly interact with them :-) PS. I also came accross a java error, but did not have the presence of mind to take a screenshot of the stack trace. It was after resetting my pasword, logging in for the first time and then browsing to the forums through the main navigation from the homepage. (This probably is not detailed enough to get anywhere, but it perhaps plants a seed of intuition in the programmer that reads it which might help when someone else makes another report ^_^), In the glance I had at it, it seemed to concern reflection and the loading of the content page, which recursed once before reaching the error. (In the sence that in the content view, a complete version of the main navigation was included, yielding a somewhat smaller header identical in shape and function to the top-level one)

I need help with my Ubuntu 11.0.4!!!!

I need help with Ubuntu!!! Whenever I boot into ubuntu, the pc makes strange clicking noises and gives me an error screen that contains things such as "FAT32 PREFIX NOT SET" and then "(hd0,0)". Afterwards it quickly transitions into :"GNU GRUB Version 1.99~rcl-13ubuntu3" with a command line under starting with "grub>_". It then has a paragraph consisting of "Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions." The first time it happened, I re-installed Ubuntu, and it worked for a while. It then happened again, so I re-installed hoping this would be the last time. Now it has happened again and I really don't want to re-install everything again.I am new to Ubuntu, and not as computer-experienced as the true "techies", so I was wondering if anybody could help! Thanks for your time! I tried opening BIOS and restoring the factory defaults, but it had absolutely no effect at all. The computer is an HP Media Center PC m495C (several years old). Again, thank you so much for taking the time to read this! ï

redsn0w jailbreak issues (6.1.3)? Answered

Hello, recently I updated my iPod touch 4th gen to the newest update (6.1.3) And of course I wanted to jailbreak it. I've been stuck on 4.x for a while now and I wanted to install some packages that were 5.x+ only. So I did some research on the status of  a jailbreak on 6.1.3 and I found one. So after going through the steps, (downloading the 6.0 ipsw, and readying up redsn0w, ect. ect) I jailbroke and rebooted my device. It worked perfectly. So I went about installing the usual must-haves for any jailbroken device. Bytafont, Fakecarrier, Activator, iFile, Colorkeyboard, openssh, Iconoclasm and a few others. At that point it was still working fine. I was kind of proud of myself. Then I installed a theme and forgot It required Winterboard, so I found and installed it. It was still working fine until I had to respring to show the theme. that's when the device rebooted (instead of  a respring) and I assume the springboard crashed. I was somewhat expecting that to happen, so I went to boot the device again through redsn0w. After I put the device into DFU mode it rebooted, but with the vanilla apple logo and without the redsn0w pineapple logo. I thought that was weird and I unlocked the device. (it still has the font and the different keyboard i installed.) I then went straight to Winterboard to try at getting that theme working again, but now it crashes when I open it. i then went to boot it though redsn0w once more and now it gets an error that says exploit failed. the device won't go back into the other jailbroken state any more and  redsn0w keeps getting the exploit failed message. Just looking for some insight on what might be wrong. i can format the ipod and reinstall everything but i don't have the time now.  any suggestions on what to do?

peculiar issue with arduino clones; thoughts?

So a little while back, I bought about 10 arduino nano clones. I'd used the nanos before, and really like the form factor, so i got some off of ebay. they worked great, and you'd know no difference in performance compared to other boards, these new ones seemed to boot faster even. unlike most, the ones i got dont use an FTDI chip, but rather a chip labeled as "CH340G". these boards were working perfectly until i was trying to test some code that was very close to the maximum size you can fit in an atmega328. it was 30,000 bytes, and mostly because of the included libraries. when i hit upload, it compiled fine, but once it got to the "uploading" phase nothing happened on the arduino board and after a while it threw an error claiming a response of 0x00, if memory serves. it didnt seem like the atmega was resetting, so i probed it with my oscilloscope, but it certainly was resetting. i thought maybe the capacitor on the reset line had issues, so i replaced it to no avail. everything seems fine in windows and i can still talk to the program previously on the chip via the serial terminal. the only way i can seem to upload code now is via the icsp header. so im wondering if anyone knows what is going on here, or how i can fix the issue?

My network is really screwed up

I seem to be fighting a loosing battle with my network, things just never work like they're supposed to.For example, sometimes I have to reinstall my network printer on both my laptop and my ibook to get it to print again, even when the server has been running fine sans problems for a week, it will randomly do this shit.Another example is, right now I "was" just trying to copy some music over to an external firewire drive on my server that I have shared. I had the permissions on everyone set to full access yesturday but I noticed when I restarted my server, it did not detect my drive properly until I re-seated the firewire cable :S Thusly somehow it lost my share configuration for my music folder.I set it up, but this time I left it on read only because I wasn't planning on adding any music earlier, itunes and everything was working fine when i mounted the volume. I went on there and changed the permissions back to full access just 20 minutes ago as I wanted to add some music to my drive, I right clicked in my mac os x explorer and made a new folder just to see if I could copy over now, it worked, aswell as deleting the folder. So I drag the 60mb folder of mp3 files over, and it just sat there...and sat...and sat.... until eventually giving me an error -36, upon searching about, it means "-36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)".That's straight from the horse's mouth, and that really tells me nothing, what exactly does "bummers" mean???It's frustrating for me non stop, and it does this to me with other shares in mac os x, or they will randomly disconnect for no reason, sometimes after 15 minutes or sometimes after 3 days. I will note too, I can't connect to my server now, it just says missing alias in the mac os finder. Yet I can VNC into it no problem, wowa, but just upon checking my pc just now, it can't access any shares on it either, the cursour is just spinning, however I usually have no problems with my pc's accessing it, other than the printer thing.I'm just so god damned frustrated with my set up, I've looked it up and down until I was exhausted, several times, and I know I must be missing somewhere along the way, but I just can't understand how it doesn't work like I want it to. Shares are set up, firewire is out of the question, permissions set up, mac os x can log into server, check. It's all good until I actually go to use it for something when I really need it.I'll have to restart my server now to get it to work properly was fine until I vnc'd into it to change the permissions, im gonna try restarting it now and just access it from it's own screen, perhaps vnc has something to do with it.Oh and to clear up any questions before they're asked, this is how I have it configured, as quickly and detailed as I can explain it:My network starts at my ADSL +2 4 port router/modem thingy (Speedtouch 546, it has it's own connection issues on the isp's side, but they don't seem impact LAN side data flow)That then gets split off to:*Port 1: iBook G4*Port 2: 25 ft. cable to 8 port switch (I'll explain that a little further down)*Port 3: 50 ft. cable to apple airport basestation in livingroom for wifi*Port 4: My main AMD PcMy ibook is configured for DHCP with manual address switch just makes the modem think I have like 5 computers hooked into one port lol...My airport, for a long time I thought was perfectly fine as far as usuage with my thinkpad, however, I've been noticing the last few times it's powered on, the airport connects to the thinkpad, but assigns it a address which does not exist on my network, but if I turn the wifi off and back on, it connects fine and assigns it a dynamic ip on my network.Other than that, I have it in bridge mode so that it acts pretty much the same as if the laptop were wired via ethernet, vnc, filetransfers, and online games all work good albeit the wireless delay, still not bad in VNC however. My AMD machine is set up for static ip at 2 of my modem goes to port 8 (uplink) of my switch.*Port 1: My server (Configured for static ip at rest are just my B&W; g3 setup for static ip at and an old P2 I believe is at .69 and a 1.5 amd athlon aswell setup on, all of those in no particular order except I made sure my server stays on port 1.I did have everything setup so my server was on port 2 of my modem all by itself, but I needed the switch over by my server so I moved it, however, I was still having these problems before hand, even when my server was running on a completely different motherboard! Also, maybe could someone tell me why my server won't boot unless I have a bootable disk in the drive (IE: my windows 2003 server install disk), just so it goes to "press any key to boot cd.......", of course I don't push any key, and it continues to boot into windows. However, if I dare start my server without that disc in there, it simply goes to "Invalid System Disk error, insert correct/valid disk (can't remember it word for word), and push enter"I've tried reinstalling windows server 03, and same deal, yet it's using the same hard disk for the OS that my previous motherboard used and booted from not a problem.I really apologize for the long post... but I've quite literally burnt myself out and lost all motivation with continuing to expand my computer network and so I figured I would ask for help on here for one last resort, but I know many people probably won't read it due to the long post, but I have a lot of problems I don't have answers for and I need to explain myself somewhat thoroughly or else I won't find the proper solution for the problem, now will I?

: Arduino + Adafruit wave sheild + IR + Keypad sound board

Hi , was wondering if you could point me in the right direction I'm very new to Arduino I built last year a simple board with adafruit wave shield and added a simple 12 digit key pad to play 12 sounds + power up I have got the codes for the KEYES IR receiver so know the IR is correctly connected and library loaded im trying to integrate the IR code so can change the sounds by IR remote ideally with option of the buttons (if have to loose the buttons and just use remote that's fine) have copied the code below for how it works now just buttons   I found some code for Cylon Pumpkin that works great with just the remote but would also like to integrate the 12 digit keypad Thank you in advance for any help or pointers you can suggest Richard CODE FOR 12 DIGIT BUTTON PRESS /* ADAVOICE is an Arduino-based voice pitch changer plus WAV playback. Fun for Halloween costumes, comic convention getups and other shenanigans! Hardware requirements: - Arduino Uno, Duemilanove or Diecimila (not Mega or Leonardo compatible). - Adafruit Wave Shield - Speaker attached to Wave Shield output - Battery for portable use If using the voice pitch changer, you will also need: - Adafruit Microphone Breakout - 10K potentiometer for setting pitch (or hardcode in sketch) If using the WAV playback, you will also need: - SD card - Keypad, buttons or other sensor(s) for triggering sounds Software requirements: - WaveHC library for Arduino - Demo WAV files on FAT-formatted SD card This example sketch uses a 3x4 keypad for triggering sounds...but with some changes could be adapted to use several discrete buttons, Hall effect sensors, force-sensing resistors (FSRs), I2C keypads, etc. (or if you just want the voice effect, no buttons at all). Connections: - 3.3V to mic amp+, 1 leg of potentiometer and Arduino AREF pin - GND to mic amp-, opposite leg of potentiometer - Analog pin 0 to mic amp output - Analog pin 1 to center tap of potentiometer - Wave Shield output to speaker or amplifier - Matrix is wired to pins A2, A3, A4, A5 (rows) and 6, 7, 8 (columns) - Wave shield is assumed wired as in product tutorial Potentiometer sets playback pitch. Pitch adjustment does NOT work in realtime -- audio sampling requires 100% of the ADC. Pitch setting is read at startup (or reset) and after a WAV finishes playing. I need to get a server up and running!!

Hello peeps. It is me again, I have a couple questions and I'm hoping that someone pays attention to it. 1. I tried to get my p2 (pentium 2) going so I could eventually use it as a media server/download server (it is fast when you get a few hundred mb of ram and 80 gig hd in there at 467mhz). Well it seems to have a habbit of rebooting itself when you think "aww I can relax now, I have windows installed and everything setup" then it "BOOSH" restarts and comes up with a lovely lovely lovely (I could go on like this seeing as I've reinstalled windows xp on here 10+ times, yes I sit in the corner from time to time and just shiver) error: System Disk Error, press ctrl+alt+del (never could find that key..). Somehow this clever ass machine has found a way to corrupt it's own partition. I have ram for it that once did work in there too, but now when I put it in now, it doesn't boot, hangs and beeps. So should I just trade it for another (I know a guy that runs a comp shop with quite a few oldies laying around, perhaps I could score a p3) or is there something I can do to get it up again, my parents paid around $2000 for it when it came out (apparently 32mb ram, 4mb agp card, 6 gig hd) is top of the line in 1999 :-/ ) and I wan't to "whip" a few more tb of data out of it. That being said,..on to the next question 2. I just upgraded/installed new software for my ibm thinkpad r51. Medly little ibm has all it's own network utilities and whatnot (but when you don't use it, it's hell frozen over). Well before the upgrading (just like upgrading software from say 3.5 to 4.1 or the such) I could see the ibm from my ibook g4, and share files, but it was nearly 1 way as the thinkpad couldn't see the mac for some ungodly reason. After install, nothing at all. I'm rather annoyed and having read article after article of documentation for microsoft and other sites, it seems as simple as just being connected to the same AP (yes I'm using wireless and btw, my router doesn't support cross networkings, so I can't share between wireless computers and those on ethernet, not a big problem so I'll move on)... and have them all on the same workgroup, which even if they aren't you're supposed to still be able to network and it appears to be just as simple as that. Apparently not. Why can't my windows pc's see each other on the wireless and I can't even see the thinkpad on my ibook anymore. One more people 3. I decided to hook my other desktop machine (Athlon xp 1800+), but unfortunatly it has a fan the size of my foot and a 8000rpm fan attached to it, while it keeps it almost down to 20 C, it makes so much noise you can hear it anywhere in the house, could I put a control knob or the such in line? Thanks for your help if anyone chooses to be a big help and give me a hand with a few things and I promise I won't bug again. I just have had these few things I need to fix for such a long time but no one wants to help me, I'll admit, it's not something anyone really wants to get into,..networking and whatnot, but if someone can just sit down with me, possibly on msn so I can try things out basically in real time, then I would be forever greatfull. -Punkguyta

I need some expert mac help!!

Okay, I got a bit of a story, and a bit of a question (Las Vegas, I know you can help me). I've been transfered to a new highschool (not that new to me, I've been to it before) and I've been there for about 3 weeks now. I was given a thinkpad R51 by the school board while I was out of school to use for school work and to take to school. That's all fine and dandy, but the restrictions on their disc image are unbelievable and it makes it next to useless to me other than a gigantic calculator with a shitty battery life. So I wiped it of course, repartitioned it with a 30 and 10 gig partition (respectivly both NTFS, the backup partition, the 10 gig one, is currently in fat32 as I forgot macs can't write to NTFS). So everything works fine, when I got transfered to the school, I asked the so-called "head" techy teacher person of my school for the wep key for the wireless network in my school so I can print my work out in class instead of waiting till I got home (teachers don't like that sometimes). Since I've been to school he's made up excuses like "I know I have the wep key wrote down somewhere, but I know it'll take me like an hour to find it so I can't right now - I've been told that on 4 different occasions on 4 different days. Funny thing is that both he and I know that their wireless isn't actually pure wep mode. It's a wpa enterprise mode of some sort with a required username/password combination to log into it (that's fine though, it'll still work if I have the password). Oh yeah I forgot how I took my ibook to school one day, then the next day (no not the day I was showing him my ibook) he tells me that the wireless will work on my ibook, but not the thinkpad, which, like every other fucking laptop in the school, is a model R51 type 1829 with the odd old R40 laying around. It's excuses after excuses, my mother wanted to call in and give them hell for leading me around but I told her no, I'm curious to see how dumb this teacher thinks I am (and so far I've been playing dumb). NOW he tells me that I need to now, re-image my thinkpad with their school disc image they use on their machines, which I don't have to agree to doing because the laptop didn't come from this school and so it's not theirs. There was absolutely no reason it would not work as I even used the exact same wifi drivers/software and even the same profile management software they use on theirs. Now, I'm almost done but let me explain the last bit of why I'm even posting this lenghty (and possibly waste of time) post. I recently re-reformated as somehow I contracted a nasty trojan downloader onto it, and it was due for a clean up anyways. Well wasn't that a rough ride, since the reinstall I've had to wrestle a video driver onto it, fiddle around with all the other drivers to get them installed, and I still can't get a wifi driver to install. Even if I force install one from the "manual" option when XP asks for drivers (yes XP does have generic Intel Wifi lan drivers for my card) and it wouldn't go, just gave me an error 10 code (device cannot startup). Okay, so the driver isn't compatible? Well Lenovo only has 3 different wifi driver packages for different wifi internal cards for my "one" model/type of laptop (the type "1829" is lenovo's numbering system basically for revisions, and when I went on their site for drivers, it askes me for this, model, and a specific 3 digit number on the bottom (order code I think). So why it can't just tell me the specific card in my revision (as I'm sure there's probably only one card for my revision) is beyond me. I downloaded all three, the first two were just small driver/utility packages (I think they were only 802b drivers too, at least one of them was). When I tried to install them, no luck, first appeared to install it, although the drivers never installed apparently. So I uninstalled what (still) there, and tried the second, same thing, except nothing installed, but it appeared to install. So I went on to the last one, it appeared to be succesful. Not, for some reason, windows could list me all the ap's around here, but couldn't connect to them, or mine, and I know I put the right key in. And when I tried to use Ibm's utilites to connect, it kept crashing, and it was even crashing the wireless zero config windows service thing every time I tried to power on the wifi or such. However I don't even care about windows right now at this particular time or fixing the drivers, for all I know there was a scratch on the install cd and it's botched (very unlikely as I know the install would halt and say it can't read) Now because my teacher has been literally screwing around with me (I'm not assuming here that he's lying to me and making excuses, I know he is because it's just too obvious, you guys tell me). Plan? Install mac os x on the thinkpad and ask him again if it'll work and if he says no, I will probably rip him a new asshole right there on the spot, seeing as he's told me multiple times it will work on my mac, but not the thinkpad, so if I have mac software on there, shouldn't be a problem (hehe). I really want to do this to get back at my teacher because he doesn't believe anything I tell him and he thinks he's pretty smart, just generally another guy with a too-big ego for one person to handle. I downloaded the iAtkos disc image as directed by instructions I found through google (yes, torrent, illegal, don't harp on me for it, jobs makes enough as it is with ipod sales). It's supposed to be pre-patched, and also supposed to include additional driver packages of some kind (that's a plus). And to boot, it's supposed to boot off the dvd (lawl) without any tricks (like usb drives and that smutz). It all seems pretty sweet, and it did boot when I popped it in, but It went to the mac loading screen (the white one with the grey spiny thing) and just sits there with absolutely no activity. I booted it with the -v/-s command(s) and this is what comes up when it stops loading and sits: "Extension "" has immediate dependencies on both and components; use only one style." My understanding is that the plist file might be missing some components the driver is calling for, but the "use only one style" part doesn't make sense so I know it's something else. Although it didn't say, I presume the kernal was already patched as it was supposed to be a pure pop-in-and-go image. I was hoping to try installing the EFI patch after too if I can get it going in the first place. And yes, I did quite a bit of googleing before I came to here. I could find information on R40's with mac os x installed on them (or was it x40?, I know those are newer, the r40's are old) and other models inbetween but nothing on thinkpad. I don't even care if it's fast or works 100%, I just want to do it, I do also know that the atheros chipset in my wifi card is native compatible with tiger apparently and should show up as a standard airport card. I don't know if I'll be amazed or not when I post this finally and see how many pages long it is, but I do really need a hand, because this will be the final step before I go to the VP and tell him that this guy has been screwing around with me and blowing me off. I deserve and education dammit!

The best car ad ever made

A family member sent me this ad that was posted on craigslist, while it was the most explicit ad I've ever seen, I'd prefer this over any normal ad. Enjoy those who feel comfortable reading this. DISCLAIMER:  I bleeped (****) out any explicit words...... Though I could have missed s-something.  And explicit's definition is different between people Side note: If anyone thinks this is a tad (or more than a tad) over the top, PM me or reply saying so. I'll delete it. - - - If you think you'll be offended by this ad... DON'T READ IT.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - POS 1994 Honda Civic LX for sale - $600 (Marietta, GA) Date: 2010-07-11, 4:49PM EDT Reply to: [Errors when replying to ads?] That's right, you can own a piece of shi... history right now for only $600. You may wonder why I didn't post a picture and that's because with a car this crappy, a photo is not needed. Just imagine the worst possible car and then picture a camel taking a dump in the trunk and you'll have a close approximation. You don't need to worry about me lying... it really is a POS. There is no risk of you getting over here and finding out it's really a gorgeous gem worth thousands... that doesn't happen...ever. But if for some reason that's actually happened to you, then you are acquainted with a crazy cosmic karma that has never thought to even piss in my face. I almost had a date on PlentyofFish and you know what happened? The f***ing AC died. For two years while I was not dating, it worked fine. The day after I get digits, the AC craps out. The car also has a weird hesitation problem that was not fixed even when I replaced the fuel filter. What could cause all of these things? Satan in the drive train...that's right... it's rare, but it happens to guys like me. This car is actually demon-possessed so you can forget about any sort of easy fix. Jesus said you need faith to cast out demons like this and believe me there are only two people on the planet that have that sort of faith. One guy lives in a cave in India and the other guy is dead. And you can forget about the guy in the cave helping you because, if you can find him, he's just going to tell you how physical setbacks are really spiritual blessings...blah blah blah...yada yada yada. Exactly. Don't expect sympathy from any motherf***er that sits around in his underwear in a cave. Other problems with this car include busted boots on the tie-rod ends, busted wheel hub boots, broken AC, leaking power steering system, ABS light always on, check-engine light comes on occasionally, driver window sometimes comes off the track, paint has permanent dirt in it (yes, it's f***ing can't scrub it out with anything less than sandpaper or some highly explosive chemical that causes cancer in 49 states and erectile dysfunction in the 50th.) The car does drive, but that's about all it's good for. Good luck getting it to pass emissions. I've never tried as it's still registered in Clarke County. If you want to date, this car is probably not for you. On a positive note though, I can assure you no one has ever had sex in it. It would take a miracle to get a girl to even sit in this car, much less take her clothes off in it. Other possible uses for this car included entertainment at frat parties. You could charge people $5 a swing with a baseball bat, although you still probably wouldn't recover your investment. You might be able to sell it to the Mythbusters and get the to test the myth, "Is it possible that a car could really be this s***ty?" Adam Savage and Kari Byron will have a field day and close it off with "Myth f***ing confirmed" and a side comment from Kari about how whatever d*****bag use to own it must have never been laid. There are some positives like a beautiful Lumar 32% tint job, keyless entry with remote trunk release, an Alpine CD Player, and Pioneer speakers in the door. So at worst, you can sit in your driveway and listen to music with a bottle of Jergens and a picture of Eliza Dushku. I really wouldn't recommend taking it on the road until you replace the tie-rod ends. You might crash into a bus full of nuns and then the Pope will reign motherf***ing hail fire down on your betrodden a** with more fury than the inquisition because you actually decided to drive and be seen in such an amazing POS, killing 20 of his lovely Sisters. One other thing you might use this car would be pushing it off a cliff. If you've ever wanted to see what it's like first hand for a car to fall hundreds of feet and smash against rock, then here's your chance. Although don't be surprised if this demon-possessed sleigh from hell manages to f*** up your good time even in that bold scenario. I don't know how it would, but it would probably figure out a way. If there are any parents out there reading this, don't let your children fall into the situation I'm in. I would never have ended up with this car if I had pursued a real career. But instead I majored in math where the best job I can find now is up in Portland with a bunch of bran muffin eating hippies, jerking off Moose for 75 cents a smile for some wildlife conservation sperm bank. Let your kids do something with good with their future, like wait tables at Denny's. Oh yeah... it's white, 4 doors, and automatic. Whooptie-f***in-do!

computer RAM upgrade stupid questions?

Well as it turns out, 8GB of RAM with Chrome and Kdenlive video editing software open at the same time causes Ubuntu to max out the RAM on my machine, and the machine will start to become very sluggish, eventually freezing for several minutes at a time with a high chance of never unfreezing. This used to be a very common issue that would occur with only google chrome open, due to a memory leak with my Gmail tabs. If I catch this sluggishness and eventually full system hang early enough, I can recover from it by entering CLI mode on ubuntu (alt+F1) and killing "chrome." After researching this problem a bit more, I created a swap file, since I do not have a SWAP partition, this helped delay the eventual unrecoverable system hang, but did not entirely fix the issue. I also tried different "swappiness" values, and also learned about this command "sudo sysctl -w vm.min_free_kbytes=400000" which supposedly forces a set amount of space to be unused in ubuntu. Looking at the system monitor this appears to do what it says, preventing a >95% RAM use, forcing swap to be used instead, and this was initially promising as it seemed to reduce the full system hangs, but created more small bugs, like freezing and stuttering wildly with buffered youtube videos, or playback in Kdenlive. A reboot seemed to have fixed that issue, but I'm not sure if those settings stuck around. ANYWAY; I guess there is no denying it, I simply do not have the RAM necessary for my workload anymore. I DO use intel HD integrated graphics, which uses the system RAM for graphics processing, so I wonder, will faster RAM allow slightly better graphics performance? My understanding is that GDDR is optimized for sheer bandwidth, not latency, while system DDRx RAM is optimized for latency. Does this mean my system will benefit more from high clock rate and high latency setting on a given RAM set, or is low clock and low latency RAM better? Most "gaming" orented builders seem to say RAM is not important other than esthetics and reliability. Also, is there a difference between buffered and unbuffered RAM?  Currently, the specs for my RAM are: Geil EVO Veloce GEV38GB1600C9DC 4GBx2 This RAM I got for "free" with my motherboard, and it seems to work with the following settings in the BIOS: . . .1600MHz @ 9-9-9-28 timings, 1.5V . . .1333MHz @ 9-9-9-24 timings, 1.5V . . .1800MHz @ 11-12-11-33 timings, 1.65V These are the fastest possible settings that will boot. Note, I was not too happy with the 1800MHz overclock, especially considering my computer was acting strange and crashed during an update, corrupting Ubuntu. I was able to repair the installation of some corrupted packages halfway installed. It did not seem to make any difference in some games on ubuntu, which is how I tested stability/speed. I have also had issues where while the BIOS system check passes, ubuntu puck errors all over me when I clocked at 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24, even at 1.65V. There is really no overclocking this currently overpriced and mediocre RAM to any degree. The three settings above were the best settings I could get. The RAM I am currently looking at getting is:;=UTF8&qid;=1452056996&sr;=1-1&keywords;=BLS2K4G3D169DS1J It is the most affordable, and states that it is 4GBx2 of 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 RAM. I think I can underclock it to match the speed of the rest of my RAM and I think it should work well alongside. What do you guys think? I do not want to have to buy the $67 16GB if I can help it.

Assistance with BD-P1600 Repair?

Has anyone ever attempted to fix a Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray player after a bad firmware update? I'm like 90% of the way there. I've already been able to get it to boot after flashing it with the European XEF version of the software, but I cannot use most of the streaming features that originally came with the player, a side effect of the European software, and it has the wrong region. All I need now is the rootfs.bin file from and American, XAA, version of the software. If anyone has done this fix themselves than they would likely have this file somewhere if it hasn't already been deleted. I know its a long shot, but you never know. Also, as a general point of information, the firmware from the Samsung website is encrypted, so it's no help. Links to sites describing the repair process: Edit: So I've discovered something which someone might be able to help me with even if they don't have the files. When it was first bricked and I cracked it open to try and repair it, I did a flash dump from the cfe into a file on my tftp server. More recently I copied partition 10 from the kernel to a flash drive, which supposedly is all the other partitions together, including the rootfs. When I compared this file to the flash dump from a year prior, the beginning part appeared exactly the same, so I though that by looking at the section in the copy of the partition that represents the rootfs, I could make a copy from the corresponding section in the flash dump and flash that as the rootfs. Sufficed to say, it didn't work, but just today I repeated the flash dump and found that it too is different than partition 10. It appears that beyond the first section of the file the flash dump has a completely different structure. When I compared the two sections in both flash dumps, they appeared very similar but has small differences in one section, which I would expect is a result of reflashing the rootfs. So now my question is is there a way to use the flash dump to repair the player? Edit: Additional question, I was wondering if I would be able to use the cfe to directly rewrite the section of the flash that is different. Fortunately, the cfe section of the flash appears to remain identical in all versions of the flash file I have, so I wont be rewriting that part, hopefully preventing it from being completely unbootable should something not work. My problem is that I am having problems figuring out how to reflash the nand from the cfe. I'm using the command: flash -offset=20000000 I keep getting the error: flash0: Device not found *** command status = -6 I think this is because the command did not specify a flash area to write to, so I did show devices and got:          uart0  16550 DUART at 0xB0400B00 channel 0          flash0.cfe  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 00000000 size 1536KB       flash0.kernel  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 00180000 size 5120KB       flash0.rootfs  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 00680000 size 40960KB        flash0.pstor  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 02E80000 size 8176KB       flash0.splash  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 0367C000 size 1280KB    flash0.drmregion  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 037BC000 size 128KB       flash0.rawnvr  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 037DC000 size 768KB       flash0.macadr  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 0389C000 size 16KB        flash0.nvram  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 038A0000 size 128KB         flash0.swap  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 038C0000 size 6400KB  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 03F00000 size 1024KB          flash1.all  New NAND flash at 00000000 offset 00000000 size 65536KB                eth0  BCM7038 Internal Ethernet at 0xB0080000 I'm not sure which one to choose. When I dumped the flash I used the command: CFE>save 192.168.x.y:flash_dump 0x1fc00000 0x4000000 The definition of the save command is: save Save a region of memory to a remote file via TFTP   Any idea which part of the flash this is dumping from / which part I should write to?

Mac VS PC?

I'm posting this to share my experience and opinion of Mac's VS PC's. I welcome you to read and share your story. For many years I was a PC. I believed whole-heartedly that I needed Windows, and I needed Microsoft. Then I bought my last laptop. It wasn't cheap. I used it everyday for work and therefore it was important that it ran efficiently. Like many of you, I suffered from "blue screens" and on occasion a "crash". There were viruses and trojans and attacks from all places, you'd think I was engaged in war! Then the proverbial "last straw" occurred. I needed to upgrade into some new software, and I received a simple message that I needed to also upgrade the Windows Service Pack. Hmmm.... Seemed easy enough. (Been there. Done that.) So, off I went to download the SP (from a reputable source) and then "Success!"... I got a message that said "Successfully installed. Windows must restart to complete process". Hmmm... Ok... I pressed through the process to restart my machine and there it began.... The long and never ending cycle had started! My laptop shut down, started to boot and then upon seeing the (dare I say it?) Vista Start Up Screen, my laptop promptly repeated itself and began to reboot... o_0 ??? This went on for sometime... *anger growing*... NOTHING I did would stop this, or should I say NOTHING would START my laptop. It was forever entangled into a mysterious vortex of computer "Neverland". I was NOT impressed. I had to borrow another computer to do some research and found very little at the time to explain this conundrum. Then I tried Microsoft. I used their "so-called" online customer service department and was put in touch with someone who was younger than my oldest pair of shoes. He also couldn't speak English very well, so without being incredibly rude I requested another agent. Upon conversing with agent #2, I knew I was in trouble... (Was Agent #2 related to Agent #1???) ... o_0 ??? *shakes head* I will give credit to Agent #2. He was nice. He tried his hardest to suggest everything under the sun, but alas, we both concluded it was hopeless. The final bluescreen error number confirmed the toe tag on my machine. So I was left with having to reinstall the entire system and lose EVERYTHING on my laptop. *fuming mad now* Then it occurred to me that "Windon'ts" (as I affectionately call them now), opted not to provide me with necessary disks to reinstall their OS during my purchase. It seems that the cost of a CD has become so expensive for Microsoft that they are forced to leave it up to the consumer to fend for themselves. Clearly, they are suffering financially, No? When I rationalized this logic with Agent #2, he suggested that I purchase Windows 7 as it had just come out and was much better than Vista (No kidding.... *rolls eyes*). But why? Why prey-tell should I have to purchase anything? My laptop was only 14 months old (conveniently out of warranty) and may as well have been a pre-historic dinosaur as far as Agent #2 was concerned. So where did me and Agent #2 leave off? He suggested I "borrow" an installation disk from someone and reinstall windows vista and start over... *tics forming now...* He assured me that my "service call to Microsoft" would remain as "unsolved". (Oh btw, at this point we were regulars on the telephone). So my ONE LAST QUESTION to him was: "What assurance do I have, after reinstalling Vista and then the SP I need, that this problem won't just start again?" - His reply was, "Well, it shouldn't"... Straw officially broken. Now we come to my life with my new MacBook. Clearly much more expensive than a Windon'ts PC, but wait... Is it? Let's review. There are more "open-source apps" available to a Mac (meaning you get them for free), and in most cases I find they are the same if not better than the paid for MS version. The critical applications that I use everyday for work, installed fine and without issue. I also received "DISKS" from Apple. Apparently they can afford to give customers what they pay for.... Upon opening the box, I was running my new laptop within 5 minutes. Easy Peasy... The time alone that I save from all that aggravation is money in the bank. Do I miss anything? Yes, actually I do (or maybe I don't). What I miss out on are bluescreens, viruses, trojans, attacks, intrusions, crashes and all the other fun stuff I got to know and expect with a PC. So why tell all of you about this now? Well yesterday I noticed that the bottom of my MacBook had a slight bulge in the case. *Heart skipped a beat*. Then after some mild panic, with visions of my last ordeal swirling in my head, I went online in search of why, and found the answer within 5 minutes. Apparently this was something Apple became aware of and had a simple solution. Fill out a contact information form along with my serial number and I got a confirmation message. Not only would I receive an ENTIRELY NEW bottom to my MacBook, I would receive a full set of screws AND a screwdriver!!! All FREE OF CHARGE. NO SHIPPING FEES. COST ME NOTHING!!! *shocked* Now I was beaming. *ear to ear grin* I felt validated for my departure from PC. Then in some kind of absurd customer service universe, I received a knock at the door. My replacement parts had arrived!!! - Less than 24 hours later... *mouth gaping and eyes wide* So I thank you for reading this. I encourage you to share your opinions. If you don't know who I am. I am canucksgirl. I'm a Mac. Not a PC.
