Clueless Bottles

[Location: Buea, Cameroon | Central Africa] I buy a local fruit juice that is sold in glass bottles about 6 inches high and that can hold about 310ml of liquid. Funnily enough, the company that fabricates these drinks does nothing to recollect used bottles and neither is there some company set up here for recycling of glass or anything like that. Business-wise, this tells me a lot I could benefit from. However I am now in possession of about 100 of these bottles and I have no clue what to do with them.  Any suggestions? -Cheers Attached: Image of Bottle

Water Bottle Raft

Finished Project - https://www.instructables.com/id/Project_rRaft_Building_a_Raft_out_of_Water_Bottl/After thinking about Reishee and his island, I asked my mom if I could build an island from water bottles...the idea was rejected. I asked my mom if I could build a raft, and she said sure...so i've started collecting water bottles. Not only does the final result get me excited, but people's responses do as well. Of course there are those who think i'm crazy (as there are with any of my schemes), but there are so many more who just love the idea, and get enthralled in it. A friend in crew is going to empty the boat house recycling bin for me, a teacher told me that the recycling bin in the teacher work room is over flowing, many more offer to collect water bottles from their families, and bring in the 20+ bottles from their cars. I bring a bag to school to collect them, and collect bottles from people...just being a part of this great recycling project (I want it to be 98% recycled) excites people, so when they see one person donate a bottle, others will hurry to finish their water and donate it to the cause as well. The whole thing has just opened my eyes to how many bottles are thrown out, instead of being recycled...it's amazing. Just because people will probably be asking, this is my plan:Two large water bottle pontoons will be on either sideA wooden frame/deck will be clipped onto the pontoons via eye bolts and carabinersHomemade oarsThat's the basics...I hope to have some luxuries too:Big ole water tight cooler bolted onto the back for storageTwo stadium seats bolted onto the deck to sit onTo keep up with the raft, visit rraft.blogspot.com

Pop bottle caps?

I have been saving pop bottle caps for a short time now.  But with the amount of pop my wife and I drink I am going to have them coming out of my ears in no time.  So anyone have any crafting ideas to do with pop bottle caps?  One thing I thought of was to make a computer case out of them.  But maybe I have watched that video of the guy making an 8-bit Zelda case out of wooden blocks too much.

DIY Bottle Filler?

I fill, cap and label my own small paints (craft/ceramic).  The bottles range (in volume) from 1/2oz - 8oz.  The most common, and the one I'm most concerned about speeding up, is the 1/2oz bottle size. I currently use large ketchup/mustard bottles, which means I'm continually re-filling those bottles for any given batch I'm filling. I've been trying to figure out how I could create my own DIY bottle-filler, as a commercially-available, bench-top filler is several thousand dollars. What I've envisioned up to now is some sort of air-tight container to hold the paint with an air-compressor (at a very low pressure, but enough to push  the liquid through when gravity won't) connected at the top and a tube connected at the bottom.  At the other end of the tube (to be held by the user) would be a nozzle with a release valve of some sort. Anyone have some more technical thoughts on how I might achieve this contraption?

Bottled light in the Philipines

There's a novel, simple idea spreading in the Philipines - using bottles of water as skylights. The concept is staggeringly simple - slum dwellings are dark, and need light, even in the daytime. Though they have electricity, it is the most expensive in the area, so they can't afford to use powered lights. Instead, they use water. A two-litre bottle of water, with a little bleach to prevent algal growth, is set into a section of metal sheeting, which in turn is set into the roofs of dwellings, workshops, even chicken-coops.  The water-bottle refracts the light in all directions, instead of letting it shine through in a single beam, and provides as much illumination as a traditional 60W bulb. OK, so this is old news to some people, but it's new to me. For more information, have a look at the Litre of Light website, or just have a poke around Google and YouTube.

I need a good material to level the bottom of a bottle.

I'm using old beer bottles to make lanterns. The main problem I encounter is that the bottom of the bottles are kind of domed. When I put the tealight candles in them, they want to slide to one side and sit at an angle. I thought about hot glue, but I was hoping for something less susceptible to heat and a little more classy. Any suggestions?

My idea is to insert some garden soil into a 1.5 liter plastic bottle then drop in a seed and cover it lightly with some more soil. Then, I will punch a few holes in the bottle cap and screw it on. Will the seed germinate and grow? Thanks.

Plastic Soda Bottle Prosthesis

Prosthethic arms for land-mine victims, etc. War, land mines, and natural disasters create far too many amputees each year, especially in the developing world.  Worse, prosthetic limbs are expensive and hard to come by.  The Center for International Rehabilitation, posting under Instructables username CIRNetwork, has been working to find sustainable solutions:  locally available materials worked by local craftsmen.   Their plastic soda bottle prosthesis is one clear, simple solution to this problem:  a plastic bottle is heat-shrunk to cover a plaster cast of the limb stump.  Different devices can be attached to the end of the bottle, enabling the wearer to perform basic daily tasks.  This type of thing can really make a difference.  Check out the video below, and see more on the CIRNetwork YouTube channel. Want to help?  CIR is seeking donations of mobility aids to support ongoing rehabilitation relief efforts in Haiti.  You can also make general donations to assist people with disabilities worldwide. This post has been sponsored by Pepsi. The Pepsi Refresh Project celebrates the people, businesses, and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive effect on our world.

Glass Coke Bottle Candles?

Hey all,  I was trying to think of a good gift for my mom's birthday, and I had an idea.  While in my basement, I found an old Coca-Cola crate from a restaurant her aunt owned and my mom worked at when she was younger.  I also always keep the bottles whenever I get a "Mexican Coke" (Glass bottle, cane sugar instead of corn syrup, made and bottled in Mexico), and had the idea to make candles out of the bottles and present them in the crate.  I had a few questions though.  The first one, and the biggest is whether or not the candle would burn well in the bottle, and would it get enough oxygen?  The second is if anyone knew a good place to get a Coke/cola scent and coloring for candles.  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

70-note "Bottle Organ"

Here's one for you... I'm looking to create a 70 note bottle organ, inspired by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzucpFgi7Xk Except I'm wanting to build mine in a more "automatic" state - played via MIDI notes, an arduino and lots and lots of solenoids making spoons hit the bottles.. That side of it I've got covered thanks to other excellent instructables which have taught me a lot about micro electronics. What I am currently trying to work out is if there is a way to change the pitch of bottles in any way except simply adding water. Would another liquid achieve the same results with less "spill risk"? Does it even need to be a liquid? I'm guessing it needs to be a liquid as I believe the physics of the noise made when a bottle is struck is based on the water absorbing vibrations, making them slower and lowering the pitch. If anyone has experience tuning multiple bottles to be struck as an instrument then please do reply! Alternatively if anyone has any novel suggestions for things which would be easier to persuade 70 notes out of then please also reply! End goal - be able to play flight of the bumblebee at full speed with chords and out-nerd the guys in the video. Ideally on bottles. Many thanks! Leo

Recycled Vitam Water Bottles

One of my teachers at school used to drink a lot of Vitamin water, and she would leave the bottles on her desk.  My enviromentally concious friend took the Vitam Water bottles home, and built a side table out of them.  She made the side table so that it can varry in height.  It's pretty sweet looking, I'll post pictures if I get the chance.  I just wanted to know what you guys (and girls) think about the idea etc.

Recycling Soda Bottles Experiments

Test 1: heat gun, "high setting"  Plastic Coke bottle SOFTENS + shrinks                                                                  -  at about 250F * Test 2: Heat gun " low setting** " Plastic coke bottle MELTS enough to  make gooey threads , and bubbles   -   at 450 to 500 F *according to a cheapy harborfreight laser thermometer. Not sure just how accurate it is in the 250  to 500F range. This device seems to read 5 degrees high at the 100F range. ** ironically, the temp is higher on the "low" setting. When the fan is moving less air, that air is hotter. One of the tricks, I imagine, might be to fully melt the plastic without burning it.   Suggestions welcome. Further results will follow.
