It is for a boy 7 years old. We live in South India and would like to use indigenous materials.
Just wanted to post a pic of my spring break project, it's a 50 lb red oak bow with bamboo arrows. At the edge of the pic you can see Tracey, excited to help daddy go hunt up some supper ;0-). This is my second homemade bow, but the first that doesn't suck ;-). It's nice to know after way too many years away from archery I can still put three arrows in a four inch circle (some of the time).

I am very much a beginner in archery. I was handed down a bow from a hunter who hasnt used it in 15 years. It was brought to a shop and adjusted to my size and a weight. I am trying to figure out how to use it effectivly and accurately. I do know that when you put the arrow on, it should be odd fin sticking away from the string. However, i am not sure if i should be putting the arrow above or below the small bead on the string. I use a peep sight and am trying to figure out how to sight in my pins the correct way. ANY AND ALL information and tips (especially answering the questions above) would be appreciated! The main questions are do i put the knock of the arrow above the bead or below it and the other question is how do sight in my sights. The top pin is 15 yards and it is high 10 inches and left by like 2 feet for some reason when i try. Thank you!

I have for a few years now made my own home-made weapons knives, axes, bows and arrows, and the like. I had the thought recently about creating an instructables series on how to make all of these by hand. My question is how many of you out there would like to see something like this? Please leave a comment below just saying that you would. Or if you have a suggestion, question, or would like to send me a project of yours comment that too. thanks guys, pbman123

I was just trying to write up a longbow instructable and a thought struck me. If You have two bows at right angles to one another joined at the handle would you get a better cast.. The arrow nocked at the interces of the two strings. I seem to remember some silly fantasy movie with crossbows set up this way...Any thoughts? The bow is such an old concept i would love to see some new variations

I have a homemade PVC bow and the drawstring is 36 inches. Anyone know how long the arrows should be and how you determine how long the arrows should be based on the lenngth of the draw.
Question by IamGOD Biotches | last reply
Dear: Instructables Just to let you know I have been having a lot of fun with my current bow. My only complaint is that it is not something you would use for hunting. It barley can shoot arrows at 35 pounds. I was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for a hunting bow? I don't know if my bow could be used for hunting or how much force it can shoot at but all I know is that it can't be used for hunting it doesn't have enough force. I'd prefer to make my next bow out of pvc if I can. Thank you. From: Noah

I was building crossbows all over the place this weekend, at one moment I had one that was twice as large as the Reaper, but I lacked pieces to make it sturdy. This started out as a low amount of pieces Reaper, but I eventually made it a small crossbow which has about 80-95% of the Reapers power. Although it has the power and probably also the distance, it doesn't have a double arrow trigger(only one arrow) and I don't think it is able to fire properly without trigger. It is however, compared to the Reaper very practical, light and easy to fire/load. Btw there are 4x3 rubberbands on it in pictures. I don't know if I am going to post this one though, maybe if its really needed :P

I first had this up as slideshow, but the forums seem to be a better place for it.1st picture (Crossbow V1) This is a picture from the first crossbow i made and if you look at the other crossbow you can see that this one is a predecessor of it.This one however is a bit harder to fire with, since you need to lower your crossbow right after firing, or get smacked in the face by an arrow bouncing back :PIt can get about 80 to 100 feet(if fired well ofcourse) and it could be seen as a light version ofthe other crossbow. It can make a hole in a piece of cardboard (from a box)If instructions are needed, I will post an Instructable.2nd picture(Crossbow V2) already has instructions posted. Actually won a prize with it too :DIt fires 120-150 feet, also depending on wind like most arrows would do. Goes through straight through cardboard.Instructions: https://www.instructables.com/id/Big-Powerful-Knex-Crossbow/3rd picture (Crossbow V3 aka Ballista ) No instructions posted, because there was not enough difference between V2 and V3 and is a bit on the heavy side :PIt has enormous power, but due to having a trigger it didn't fire further then V2.Explodes small plastic boxes, CD's, obliterates red connector of the arrow if fired straight into a wall.4th picture (Crossbow V4) never got finished because it was way too heavy and therefore it was nearly impossible to find a good handle for it. Had a good time dismanteling it....Not much to mention about this one, since it never fired.5th picture (Crossbow V5 "Reaper") is nearly complete and is fully functioning. It uses 4 rubberband strings to do the damage. It also has a new trigger system so that it can hold the full power of the 4 rubberband strings. Its topic is here: https://www.instructables.com/forum/Crossbow-V5-Reaper/Instructions are here: https://www.instructables.com/id/Reaper-Crossbow/6th picture A smaller, more piece efficient crossbow, although not as powerful as the Reaper, it is compact and easier to use.

I need some help with this heavily modded Reaper, I need a sturdy trigger to fire the crossbow, but that has been proven too difficult for me as I don't have much trigger mech experience. At one point I had it fully working when not loaded, untill it snapped the trigger when I tried to fire an arrow. :P

I am using a factory setup PSE chaos (whisker biscuit, peep sight quiver usual stuff) I only have a string loop and doinker as accessories.
Im going to make this knex thing, basically an automatic knex gun, where there is a cross bow like thing at the front, and a slide has a catch that will get the bow, and when it gos backward far enough, an arrow will automatically load, and the catch ill go down, so te rubber band will snap back, and shoot the arrow. i can put a pic in the comments. anyways, what i need, is a way to make the slide go back and forth, but only spinning the crank one way.

Well I finally got some more pieces, more still coming; this enabled me to build something bigger =dThis crossbow(more like cannon, now) has the following specs:Ammo: 1 Standard arrow, which needs to be ductaped other wise torn to shreds.Weight: 4,5 kilo's (9,92 pounds)Range: Not tested outside, will beat the Reaper and the Blockhead for sure.Rubberbands: 32, 8 strings of 4 ( these may still be increased as it shows no bending yet.)Power: Just look at 2nd picture....should explain a lot.Trigger: Same as on the Blockhead, some big improvements on it though.(Surprised about how power much it can take...)Sturdiness: Seems close to unbreakable lol...Without realizing..I also made a very good scope on it o.oI had a purple+blue 3d connector as arrow tip and when I fired on my cardboard box, it made a huge tear...and my ears were ringing like from an explosion O.o'Well this monster has bad points:Need a long/strong left arm if you are right-handed, because this thing is heavy as hell.Cannot fire without trigger.Every arrow needs ductape otherwise connector gets torn off. Also I gonna try and say...:I think this may very well be the most powerful ranged k'nex weapon on this site at the moment.

HERE IT IS. The Brickster LDS is a hybrid crossbow. It doesn't have a bow. It has a range of 250 to 300 feet with 16 to 32 rubber bands. It is extremely strong and could hold about 80lbs of force. The arrows are smaller than an average crossbow arrow so they fly slightly faster. It has no track so it is a slingshot type crossbow. Will be posted in a month or 2. Amazingly powerful. Has over 800 pieces and a Ballista attachment that rolls and keeps it at a 30 degree agle with the ground. Low piece and a great gun, If only I could show you. . . . . . . . . . . WAIT, I CAN!!!!!!!!!!

My Airsoft gun is a Crosman Stinger P32, clear, manual, 6mm, spring-powered pistol. 10 in the mag, 50 in the reservoir. I bought a jar of 10,000 bbs with it too (also Crosman), which are labbelled as "camo ammo" (why would you ever want camo ammo? I find it annoying because there's no way to find them in the grass!). The gun came with a small jar of 400 bbs, with a flip spout. My friend also bought some really crappy bbs in South Africa for one rupee (it says "1.00 R" on the price sticker), but his airsoft gun broke so he gave em to me (they're in a grenade shaped jar). The gun came with an extra clip. I made a holster for it out of the blister package, which I might make an instructable out of (it already perfectly its the gun!). The pellets were $29, and the gun was about $30. I got it summer 2006.I also have a pellet gun, which I don't remember the brand of. It's a break-barrel. I've had it for a year or two. It's my family's though, not just mine (my dad bought it for us).My bow is a red fiberglass, which I don't know the brand of or anything. The draw-weight is 9 and a half pounds. I got it when I was 9 or 10, and I'm 15 now. It's a little weak for me now. I have 5 arrows, one of which is somewhere in the pile of hay bales. They're all target arrows (roundheads), 3 of them are fiberglass, the other 2 are wood. The bow costed about $50.What guns and bows and other type thingies do you have?

I used to have a book, from about the 1920's, which I believe was called something like "The Handy Book for Boys" or "The Boys handy Guide" or something similar. It was a HUGE book, with illustrations, on how a boy could make just about anything - from building a raft, or a rowboat or a sailboat, to making root beer, fireworks, forts, aquariums, aviaries, traps, bows and arrows, games to play, how to whittle - it was a most amazing book, and of course, I lost my copy. So when this new book came out: "The Dangerous Book for Boys", everyone & myself included, got all excited about it, but it seems to be a pale imitation of what I used to have. the one thing I do remember about that old book, was it made a lot of assumptions about being able to easily acquire things that I would have no idea how to go about today - chemicals and glazier's leading and such, but I sure wish I could find another copy of that book. I bet it would be a great resource for creating new instructables or getting ideas - anyone else out there know about this book, or where to get myself another one? It seems like perfect reading material for this website! Some other things I remember; I remember the book being red, and being printed in England - it made a lot of references to the United States and had a very "English" writing style and wording. Ah-Hah! thank you Tool Using Animal - your perseverance has paid off for me. If anyone is at all interested in these books - look at the links in the comments below for a Project Gutenberg copy of the Boy Mechanic and a PDF version of The American Boys Handy Book from Google - both great resources for How-To's for all ages. Especially check out the illustrations for the boy-sized glider inside the Boy mechanic book - can you imagine allowing a kid to do something like that nowadays? Think of the lawsuits!!! :-)

For ZSDW: I've been in the zombie hype for awhile, (about a year ago,) and after finishing a couple of Zplans, I decide it would be fun to kill some zombies with dice and statistics. Alas, this is quite the beta, and it generally uses d6's, as well as some skewed grammar and stats. First things first. You are not a specified character. You have no character sheet, you have no special abilites. The following few paragraph will explain a few confusing things, and give hints on how your location will affect your game. Then, there will basic weapon stats. Later, there will be about how zombies affect you, and what kinds of zombies there are, and their health. You will also learn how you can scrounge for stuff from bodies. Subdivide means to roll for what section it is applicable for. Say your about to go into a room, you would roll for SURVIVOR and ZACH Room check. Say you get a four(4). That means there is something in the room. You would then decide if it was locked. (Unnecessary, but for extra gameplay, most are going to be locked. Hit the lock with something, and roll for it's regular attack. If the attack is successful, you broke the lock. If not, well, you may have to literally blow up the door, or say that you cannot go into the room.) Let's say no lock for times sake. Now, you know something/someone is in there. Subdivide by rolling what it is. Second line of Survivor and Zach Room Check shows this. Luckily, you roll a one(1). That means a Military person is in the room. They can have Assault Rifles, Submachine Guns, Rifles with Scoped subclass, And Scatterguns with the Breacher Barrel subclass. You can only find them in Military bases, Start Variable Location:Warzone, or ALERTNESS Yellow or higher. When moving through a house, roll for room encounters. You may roll for how many rooms you must go through,( If I roll 5, I need to go through 5 rooms before getting out, or to destination around/in house) so you must roll for encounters/room searches while in those rooms.(You would roll 5 times in this case for People and Zach Room check rolls.) In a house, you may roll for RUN, so 1-2 success, and go to the next room. 4-6, unsuccessful, roll for Scratch. (1-3 Scratched, 4-6 safe.) ALERTNESS is just a guide for what zombies are available to kill. The ALERTNESS bar is unnecessary; however it adds another angle to the game. It is at the back of this guide. Ideas, Tips and Otherwise: Tanks, APCs, Pickups, convenience stores, Molotov Cocktail, Improvised weapons, have some fun, and add to this game! Make up some weapons, apply variable splash damage, and just make sure you kill some Zach! Your start variables should be placed on a separate sheet, for reference. Say for location you picked rainforest/jungle, (your geography, weather, and season fits that description.) you will need/want to roll for Scratches more. (For realism, generally, there will be more crawlers, same with Aristriked Urban.) Same for Urban, and Airstriked-Urban, (Broken buildings, rubble, etc.) or Warzone. (More military personnel. Tanks? Have some fun! :) START VARIABLES (At the top of the game sheet.) Location: Geography: Weather: Season: # Zach's: Zach's Location: Population Density: Specialized Setting: Attack Rolls: Locks (Y/N): Scratch (Y/N): Alertness Level (Y/N): Supplies (Y/N): Leg Break (Y/N): Travel Days (Y/N): Supplies is a form of food, ammunition, and other necessary items for a single day. Each survivor in your current group takes 1 supply per day. Supplies can be found by subdividing if your preceding ROOM SEARCH roll is 1-2. If Travel Days is active/applicable, your group takes only 4 supplies per day, individual people in your group do not take any supplies, and you cannot be attacked by Z's. Travel Days are good if you have more than 4 people in your group, and have low health, or need to get somewhere. BITES are fatal, you take 3 supplies when bitten, then the following day you become a Z. Your group can take your weapons. SCRATCH'S are non-fatal; you take 2 supplies for 3 days. (7supplies, because of the one you took the day you were bitten, then the 6 you will take for the following days.) For all melee attacks, roll for bone breaks. 1-2 break, 3-5 Scratched, 6 safe. Scratch disables RANGED and FIREARMS attacks. For disabled, or failed melee attacks, 1-2 = arms, or arm, 3-4 =legs, or leg, 5-6 = chest or neck break. A Neck Break Disable turns Zach melee attacks to 2 bitten, 1 and 3 scratched, 4-6 safe. Arms/Legs breaks decreases that zombies fighting ability to 2 bitten, 1 and 3 scratched, 4-5 safe, 6 breaks leg of human. When a human has a leg broken, he/she takes two supplies per day, and halves the amount of current PTD. (Play Time per Day) To determine the time a day takes to complete, roll for the PTD, or Play Time per Day. This is found by rolling a 6 sided dice, then multiplying the number on the dice by 3. This is approximately how long a "day" is in the ZRPG, in minutes. You will need a watch or timer to play this game, if you want to apply PTD. FIREARMS Scattergun(Shotgun) = 1-3 hit, 4-6 miss, Melee 1-4 hit, 5-6 disabled. RANGE:3 This affects a maximum of 3 Zs. Roll for 1-2 1 Zach affected, 3-4 2 Zach affected, 5-6 3 Zach affected. Sub-Class: Breacher Barrel, 1-2 hit, instant death upon Z's, breaches locked doors/drywall (Apartments, this happens if you like to shoot stuff, or the lock you just suck at opening wont unlock,). Pistol = 1-4 hit, 5-6 miss. RANGE: 4 Melee 1-3 hit, 4-6 failed, if failed, roll for scratches, Z is disabled if successful hit. Subdivide for disable type. RANGE: 1 Sub-Class: Laser, 1-5 hit, 6 miss.
