It's time I turn yet again to the forums for advice, this time on recommended robot brains! [Serious] I have a project for a class requiring design, construction and programming of something. More than half of my fellow students are doing clocks of some sort, be they binary or nixie tube. A friend of mine is doing a holonomic robot, and my plan was to do a walking robot, based on ideas like the WowWee robosaurus, using a simple tail and head to balance and few motors to run it in comparison to any conventional biped. As far as servos, I was hoping to use something like the HerculeX or other serially connected servo, so I can just daisy chain the few I would need and simplify the wiring, as well as get experience with serially addressing things. Planned sensors are 2-4 IR rangefinders, 2-4 wire whiskers and one tilt switch to turn it off if it tips over. Sensors I'd love to add would be something like a super basic camera for simple machine vision if I ever learn to code that well, but I doubt that will be the case; and the LIDAR thing from the Neato XV-11 which is again unlikely. Things I was looking at for super basic use included: Arduino, HC11 MC (backplane type), BASIC Stamp, PIC. For a little more complexity I was seriously considering things like the Freescale Tower ARM, Gumstix or other. I'd love to have the serial servos, sensor assemblies and the camera and have integration with Robot operating system through an onboard computer, but I have no idea what to use to setup ROS or what would be best, or if my plan of parts to use is even good enough. In other words, what ideas should I throw out as impossible or what would I need for say, ROS use? Ideally i want to do a semi autonomous robot, so that i don't have to manually direct it everywhere, but I'd still be keeping an eye on it when it's running so it doesn't break something. If I understand ROS correctly I can use an external computer to control it, but I can also let it be autonomous? Coding math and logic in the machine language for a Z80 computer doesn't really prepare for robot building, although the class is basically a teach programming basics and throw you into the deep end. Not sure if this will work... I found a left vs right brain test online- more specifically ,http://www.wherecreativitygoestoschool.com/vancouver/left_right/rb_test.htm. I got to thinking, and I noticed that the people who call themselves creative tend to have more instructables than those who don't- so if you use the right brain percentage as a measure (however faulty) of creativity, than maybe I could graph the relationship, and (Warning- this is far fetched) find an equation. So If you could take the test, share your right brain percentage and the amount of instructables you've written, I would Greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Researchers have created a robot, controlled by a rat brain, to help study memory and look into the causes behind some debilitating diseases. The blob of nerves forming the brain of the robot was taken from the neural cortex in a rat foetus and then treated to dissolve the connections between individual neurons.Sensory input from the sonar on the robot is piped to the blob of cells to help them form new connections that will aid the machine as it navigates around its pen.The study has big implications, say the researchers.The brain cells have been taught how to control the robot's movements so it can steer round obstacles and the next step, say its creators, is to get it to recognise its surroundings.Once the robot can do this the researchers plan to disrupt the memories in a bid to recreate the gradual loss of mental faculties seen in diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.Interesting stuff from the BBC.Side note: When you watch the video, notice the volume bar. Last week I had the opportunity to work with a couple of awesome projects that combined to be even more awesome: I drove a powered wheelchair simply by using my brain! He has a program that allows the headset wearer to input arbitrary keypresses on the linked computer, configurable to the output from the headset. The wheelchair robot is a work in process from Instructabler jerkey, who has hacked into the joystick controls to allow it to be driven using keypresses on ITS associated computer. So it was relatively simple to log into the robot driver computer from the headset computer and send keypresses. Now, there is a bit more to say about the keypress creation. The goal with an EEG headset is to get brain signals, but facial muscle movements are also detectable (they use electricity too and it turns out that the muscle signals are a lot stronger than the brain signals, for various reasons). For myself, I found it very difficult to repeatably emit consistent brain waves, with only an hour or so of training. It was a lot easier to get the software to detect a blink, wink, or grimace, so that's what I ended up using. Still, I could not drive the robot very accurately, causing great hilarity amongst the observers. More work is needed! But it was an awesome and fascinating experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity. I've asked the two project builders to collaborate on an Instructable. If this happens I will update this forum post with the link.

I have been experimenting with transistors for 3 days now, both NPN and PNP. So far I have concluded nothing. I figure the easiest thing to do is to make a transistor work as a switch. With the NPN, the current seems to flow from the base to the emitter automatically. My understanding is that current should flow from the collector + to the emitter- only when I apply voltage +? to the base, is that correct? I donât even need to connect the collector on the NPN and current flows. I have also read a million things about transistors online. My experiments seem to disprove most(all?) of the findings. This leads me to one conclusion. Iâm not doing something right. Maybe I donât have the right transistors. I have no idea. I have been using radioshack NPNâs (276-2016) and PNPâs (276-1604) When it tried to make a switch with a PNP my voltages was going back through my emitter to ground. If I disconnected it the system(test led) no longer worked. You might need to know that I was using a 5v voltage regulator to supply a 10v 5v and ground leads for my experiments. I was getting odd voltage readings on my circuits so I put diodes on the leads. The diodes stopped my PNP from working(I figured the current was flowing odd waysâ¦back in the 5v+?) and didnât seem to effect my NPN experiments. So I figure Iâm closer on my NPNâs than my PNPâs. I wish I could explain better but my brain is about to melt. My wife is mad at me because I am obsessed with making this workâ¦ please help :P

Ok, so the school forces us to go to a crappy pep rally every time they have a football game. This one was the worst. They started out with a tribute to Michael Jackson. That was fine by me seeing how he is dead and I respect the memorial of dead people, but then they play his music through the WORST audio system ever made. It turned So-So (In my opinion) music into the worst ever. Then the school made us get up and do some of the moves for one of his songs, and I am not a dancing person, so you can imagine how pissed I was. They had their dance team do the moves for the rest of the songs, and then they put on stupid makeup to make the dancers look like zombies. It was just stupid because they just looked like clowns with big baggy white Tshirts. Then they had some random stupid stuff that was supposed to be for comedic humor, and I did laugh, but only because it was so stupid. (Hint: It involves transvestites). And then to make it worse, people start pulling out their cell phones and taking pictures like there is no tomorrow. At the VERY LEAST turn the flash and that shutter noise off. The end result was that I had a severe case of brain rot for 6 hours and I just recovered now. I think everyone who organizes pep rallies should be shot. At least make pep rallies optional. GAWD.

Hello, I am a 17 year old electronic hobbyist. I am in the process of making a "Haptic Feedback" meditation device. I give the whole project story here. If you are just interested in the final project you can skim or skip to the "Testing" section. THE IDEA Many months ago (when i was not so knowledgeable about electronics) I had an idea. I wanted to be able to see my thoughts as I thought them. I was obsessed with the idea of this and the thought of what would happen( imagine holding up a microphone to a pair of speakers). I could imagine myself staring at my own thoughts (or a colorful representation of them) for hours. I imagined it to be a "New Generation" of meditation. I drew up a few sketches of what this would look like and.. I hit a wall. At the time. I knew absolutely no way to do this. I just knew it was possible. I put the project on the back burner. CONSTRUCTION Six months passed and I had gotten better and better at electronics and micro-controllers and such. A month ago, I started obsessing over it again. I did some internet searches about this type of technology and all the gibberish started making sense. Not before long. I had ordered the parts for it. It cost me a good 100 dollars in birthday money. But it was well worth it and i do not regret the purchase's at all. The three main pieces were a Micro-controller(arduion uno), a brain-wave reading headset(from an expensive childs toy) and a 7 inch by 3 inch RGB led panel( a fancy panel that makes different colors and patterns). Despite knowing a little bit about electronics I was out of my depth, yet still addicted to the project. Long story longer, I had tested the three pieces of technology and they all worked beautifully. With my limited supplies i busted open the headset, made some solder joints, plugged it into the micro-controller, plugged the micro-controller into the computer, and plugged the brain reader into me. Someone before me had already made sample brain viewing programs in the processing language for these kinds of projects and i downloaded it. I turned on the program and flinched as i turned on the headset( being plugged into your laptops battery can be a tad unnerving). I was looking at a graph of my brainwaves in a system of line graphs and bars. TESTING This was exciting stuff. I sat there for perhaps an hour just staring at my brainwaves shortly noticing a pattern emerging from just simply staring at even the brain reading program. I noticed the more I stared at my brainwaves looking for the next sudden jump or dip. The less they did. In other words, actively TRYING to move my brainwaves, almost completely nullified them. This was very interesting. I took the device and my laptop to my school To get an accurate sample, I allowed any and everyone who wanted plug themselves in to go right ahead. As they messed with thier hair to get it to fit right and turned it on. What was seen for a few seconds was a (what I consider healthy) measure of brain activity. Everything was jumping up and down at varying levels. But after the subject began staring at this dance. The brain activity shrank and shrank until little was left to be observed. Occasionally depending on the situation the subject would then get bored with the lack of activity and try and make some sort of small talk. It then showed a small rising in overall brainwaves that was immediately crushed by the subjects attention toward the screen. In the initial planning, this was the last possibility I had considered. With accidental electrocution being higher on my list of possibilities. The grandiose plan of mixing my thoughts and ideas in front of my eyes shrank. I was loving every second of it. I then later plugged the panel into the device and began writing code to make it react the way i wanted it to. I had programmed the panel to display the color blue when meditation was high and red when attention was high. Purple would occur during a balance of the two. I then took out my computer from the equation as a reader and decided to see what would happen by just watching these two stats work themselves out on a color panel. I got similar results. When I was actively attempting to meditate while simultaneously watching my level of meditation it was an unwavering red. Deep breaths and glances away from the panel would bring purple to blue colors. Then I tried something completely different. I attempted to radiate unconditional love for my brainwaves. I accepted them for their want to be attentive and alert. And embraced them with as much sincerity as I could. The panel turned purple and stayed blue for as long as i could keep this state up without wavering. "Wow" i remember remarking. I may have created the worlds first "Unconditional Love bench press". And your up to speed. FUTURE I have some ideas for the future of this project but I have caught myself in a mental enigma. How would one meditate to the thoughts of their meditation without their monitoring of the brainwaves getting in the way? Or have I missed the point of meditation which might be to have no thoughts? Ideas and suggestions would be great. I would love to hear what this community would have to offer to this device. Input on meditation? Input on the technical stuff? All is welcome.

What is the most complex thing that you can visualize and manipulate in your minds eye? I have been asking around, and have found responses to be quite variable. Some people have no problem with complex images in 3-dimensions, others can't visualize in 3-d at all.For example, I can visualize, rotate, and manipulate molecules in my mind's eye... but only up to 4 atoms. Sure, I can imagine things much more complex than that. I just can't "see" them in their entire complexity at once. Im trying to make a machine called Brain Gate wireless. its basically a chip implanted in the brain, which picks up the information sent out by the brain and sends it to a computer where it is decoded and changed into the desired action (its used by people with ALS or who are paralyzed). im trying to figure out how to make it wireless. if anyone could help me that would be great!

I am really interested in science research and I want to come up with a research project, but I'm having a hard time putting something together. I want to include aspects like... - PCR (polymerase chain reaction) - RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) - ICC (immunocytochemistry) - e-gel/ gel electrophoresis I know I will be working with mice brains whose vagus nerves have been surgically cut or whose leptin intake has been significantly increased. (By the way, the leptin and vagus nerve are totally different experiments) In this case the vagus nerve serves as a connection from the brain to the stomach. Therefore if it has been cut, mice would show a reduction in food anticipation. The leptin, I believe is a hormone that deals with energy regulation (food intake). Mice with leptin intake grow obese because lack of leptin usually tells the body to stop eating so when the mice with too much leptin are introduced to food, they cannot stop eating. In either case, mice brains would be sacrificed for experimentation. (All experiments are done in a research facility) I'm not sure how to incorporate these procedural methods to the mice brains. My objective is to somehow determine the mechanisms within the nervous system, which can hopefully aid in developing methods to ameliorate neurological problems. I am open to any other methods or protocols.

Advice on best how to make a piezometer out of readily available hardware store parts without use of any power tools and access to only a very few hand tools. Basically a piezometer is a clear, straight plastic tube that you attach to the outside of (in my case) a plastic 250 Liter rain barrel (about 1.5 feet diameter, 4 feet high) from top to bottom. The top is exposed to the open air, while the bottom feeds into the bottom of the barrel (by going through the side very close to the bottom). It needs to have a diameter of about 1/2 inch, be very solid, straight and secure, and a 'water level mark' must be etchable in it somehow to indicate the normal level of water inside the barrel when the barrel is full (full means a few inches before the absolute rim of the barrel). The barrel is filled with gravel at the bottom, sand on top, and enough room for a 12" waterhead above the sand. I'm using it as a slow sand filter (SSF). The idea is that the pressure of water at the bottom of the barrel fills the tube up to the watermark against the action of the atmospheric pressure forcing the level in the tube down below the watermark. When the level of the water in the tube is about 15 inches below the water mark, it means the water pressure at the bottom of the barrel has decreased to the point where the sand in it needs to be cleaned (no water getting through). Any ideas will be greatly rewarded in the afterlife. Thanks!

I was wondering if I could somehow design a simple gadget to detect pulses in your mind to turn a head mounted torch on and off. So far, I am thinkng of putting metal pads onto your head, which would be connected to an amplifier of some sort. Since I am trying to detect Beta waves, "varying frequencies that are often associated with active, busy, or anxious thinking and active concentration." The amplified siignals would then be fed into an op amp active bandpass filter, to filter out all except that specific frequency. The output would then go into a switch of some sort. Would this work? Or are there some problems with it.

Allegations have been made that the HAARP project is behind mind control experiments. The ex governor Jesse Ventura, interviewed a professor who demonstrated in his show that it is possible to send messages to people's minds without any need for hearing. The professor put two piezoelectric transducers on Ventura's chin and Ventura claimed to be able to "hear" music in his brain. Real science or pseudoscience? If this device could be made, wouldn't this device help people without hearing? What about the possibilities of learning devices or communication? I am seeking a very resourceful, intelligent builder. My 79 y.o. father suffered a traumatic brain injury 15 mos ago. He is minimally conscious and immobile. We get him into a wheelchair but he gets no movement. This machine will cycle his legs while he lies in bed. It is over $9,000 and Medicare does not pay for the device. Ok so I just bought a new meter and I decided to test it out on my new circuit, but I was much surprised! The circuit is identical to this one: https://www.instructables.com/file/FSKP1NOHS18BW4T/?size=MEDIUM except for instead of 4 leds on rows 1 & 2 it has 8 leds per row. Since I didn't want to type it all up heres the video. So all help is appreciated! Thanks!

Well, I hope you guys are good with computers. Update! It's dead; the motherboard and a memory thing were fried.The situation: I have a Windows 2000 or NT(?) that is in my room. I use it for playing music on my stereo (it is plugged in by the auxiliary port on the stereo), and to do basic drawings in Inkscape.I normally put it on standby when I'm not using it. Well, I don't remember what happened exactly, but now it is totally non-responsive. If I turn on the monitor, the LED on it will turn green (normal working color) then switch to yellow (standby or no-input from computer color, from what I understand).If I unplug everything, the LED goes out on the actual computer, but when I plug it in, the LED turns on without me pushing it. Also, once it is on, the computer can't be turned off, even by the power switch. It is totally non-responsive.Here is a video of me checking and pushing buttons showing that it is dead.I show the "standby" button on the keyboard that is lit up, a crescent shape, like a moon. I push it ad it doesn't do anything.Please help, I have a bunch of music on there, and plan to make it my music center, for recording stuff from my guitar. C'mon geeks, I know you're out there ;D

I have been away on holiday ( Pacific US coast ) for 10 days and now back at my machine with no urge to text with questions. It feels strange to be so emotionally disjointed about this site... Maybe the questions are not stimulating today or the great London event pulls at me. Yahoo compares Love to a brain on drugs why not Instructables... Or is it just a bunch of duct-tape..

I'm on the wrestling team and today I got dropped straight down on the top of my head. (it was the kind of impact that makes the whole crowd go OOHHHH!!!!!) I was dizzy and disoriented for ~ 10-15 seconds and had a headache for ~ 1 hour. It seems to me like the brain stem would stop the brain from impacting the top of the head but I might be wrong.

I am ordering am epoc headset and would like to experiment with neurofeedback for add/adhd and or hyperactivity but I do not know what a trigger for such is, Also any help for the response after trigger recognition would help.

If you are new to the topic then it might give you a slightly quicker understanding than watching hours of youtube videos.I assume you have seen these various coils that make a sphere shaped magnet spin at insane speeds.They are a good start.You see by normal understanding these Rodin or Vortex coils should not be able to produce a field that rotates that fast.As with a lot of things we tried to use math to explain it in theory and than adjusted the math to match it.Vortex math was born.So how do you explain blue and red to a blind person that never saw anything?I mean in a way they actually know how it would look if they could see?Doesn't work, but we can use a Dyson vacuum cleaner ;)A lot of "tornados" add up to one giant super tornado.Spinning so fast that "all" the dirst stays behind and only clean air comes out.As in nature all the weather cells add up to one that is more powerful than the combined single ones.The tornados that form the term vortex are around the coils.But also around the entire donut as well as every single strand of wire.In any good vortex the rotational speed increases towards the center and bottom of the vortex.You can try that with some floating stuff when you drain your bathtub or sink.Try to imagine and endless tornado that runs around every wire like a spiral.The coil itself adds another spin vector to it and increases the moving speed or the single tornado.Combined it adds up to a very strong tornadoe moving very fast around in the coil pack.As this also creates a rotating field like another tornado in the donut shape it all gets twisted up.Physics as we know it won't fully explain these effects.Vortex devices that produce electricity are usually coils in a special winding configuration and pattern.Like we try to eliminate certain things with basket coils in the HF area a Rodin or Vortex coil tries to utlise these otherwise unwanted stray effects and interferences.Overunity is another term people like to use here but I leave it up to you if such a things is phsically possible with an electrical system.Vortex math tries to explain all these things demonstrated in experiments.However I found two slight flaws in the common approch.1. Only two dimension used.Unlike the coils the simplified Vortex math only operates in two dimensions.A circle instead of a sphere if you like.2. Again, unlike the coil harmony and resonance are neglected.It seems in some cases people try to draw a circle just with straight lines.While in reality you have a never ending, resonant "stream" in three or to be precise four dimensions.Is it the chicken and egg problem?Yes and no.You can only calculate something if you can fully understand it or exactly replicate it in reality.Vortex coils are just way to interpret theories and get some sort of results.And those results are the real problem.We can measure magnatic fields in strenght and direction even frequency.However we can neither make them visible in real time not measure mixed or entangled fields properly.We "see" Mars is our "red planet" but in reality it just the atmosphere, the surface is not red at all in most places.NASA has enough problems to calculated missions to outer space with enough accuracy.Just imagine they would have to do it while considering that around every path our planets make is another spinning "distraction"....That is exactly what Vortex math tries to do while eliminating common math bit by bit.You can see and hear in 3 dimensions.Maybe you are also good in drawing something in 3D on your compterscreen or 3D headset.But how many here could predict the path of a baseball in 3D like they do when watching a game?Depending on your viewing angle you might be way off....Try to know or calculate where exactly the ball is at any given monet in time and how fast it spins in which direction.....Our brains are not trained to think like this!Even if we construct things like a dome we prefer to have straight features.Sure manufacturing is one thing that needs to be affordable.But try to just calculate the support structure if all is actually fully round like a sphere should be.We avoid what is considered higher dimensions as much we can.To calculate a distance in 3D it still seems easier to use two 2D models to add up instead of true vectors.Again only through technology like computer we are able to simulate, understand and actually calculate what we need.Where we ventured around the globe and into our solar system our math was left behind.Finding workaround and good enough approximations still seems the way to go.Instead actually evolving our math to our needs we just add more and more complex formulas and calculations.To fully understand vortex math you need to let go and start thinking in 4 dimensions instead of just 2.Oh, sorry, you might be new to this...Number 4 is time of course.

I'm sure this isn't hard for ya all tech folk, and I'm hoping someone could point me to instructables that I could combine to make this....Any help would be appreciated when as clueless as I am, I'm not even sure the words to use to search. I would like a light box indicator with say 12 selections (colored led lights) to be able to randomize, but then to also have parameters of length for each different light. So that some might have a range of 30-90 seconds and others length of 2-10 minutes before the next random selection. Thank you.

Does anybody have any tips or techniques for breaking out of a spell of artist's block? I've been somewhat uninspired for a couple of months now, and it's making me crazy. I'm dying to create something, but every time I go out to the studio, I just wind up staring at the tools & materials for an hour or so, getting frustrated and leaving. I've tried just starting to work in the hopes that the materials would tell me where they wanted to go, but the results have been less than satisfying. If it's helpful, my current areas of interest are kiln glass (with an emphasis on recycling old bottle & window glass) and copper enameling. What have others done to get out of a creative slump? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
