Breadboard things? Answered

I have this really old microcomputer thing (ET-3400), my dad found it at work a few months ago and gave it to me. I never figured out how to work it. But that's not what I'm after: It's got these temporary connector things on it, like a breadboard thing with four holes. I don't know what it's called, but I put a box around them in the picture. My question is is there a place I can buy some of these? A website or something? And what the hell do I call them? Thanks in advance.

Music playback with breadboard.

Hello all. I want to create a simple music playback device. I wanted to be able to program a couple simple songs (MIDI format?) and when it receives an infrared signal, it begins to play through small speaker (small enough to hear about 10 ft. away). I was thinking this could be done through a breadboard. I am familiar with using breadboards but everything else I will need explained well. I appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

Breadboard Circuit for a servo?

I am looking for someone that can tell me what to do on a basic electronic breadboard (what timer, resistors etc) to be able to create a circuit to drive a servo. Basically i am an over ambitious art student that wants to use a a servo on a timer to alternate between 0 and 90 every 5 seconds or so (i haven't decided what time i want it to be but figured i could adjust it?) I am learning about these things on a DIY basis but as i am short for time i want to get it sorted. Any help would be appreciated.

Odd Breadboard Question

Hi All  I am brand new to hobby electronics and would love one day to be able to create the endless amount of cool Instructables but I have ran into a problem on my first attempt at putting theory into practice and would really appreciate any help. I have made two diagrams / images showing the circuit I made I have attached them to this post. I am using an Arduino Uno as a power source.... I ran a 5v positive from the 5v pin on the Arduino using solid core jumper to the top of the breadboard onto the positive row / rail and a negative / ground jumper to the bottom of the breadboard. In the middle of the breadboard I placed a 1k ohms resistor bridging the gap / grove/ divide and ran the positive feed through it and on to the anode leg of the LED. The cathode leg of the LED was connected to the negative row / rail completing the circuit. All works as it should because of the high resistance from the resistor the LED barely lights and is green as it should be. So without using a multimeter I know and can see the resistor is clearly working. However if I move the resistor so it's still on the same line / row as it was but no longer bridging the gap the LED goes super bright and turns yellow which means that the resistor is no longer working which I can't figure out why because I know there is definitely current flowing through it given the extreme reaction of the LED. I vaguely remember reading somewhere on these forums that Fritzing is not liked very much so I hope no one minds but to help explain what I mean above I have created two diagrams / pictures using Fritzing. The images diagrams shows the resistor "bridging" and working and the other shows it not bridging and therefore not working. So my question would be why given the resistor has current flowing through it does it not work unless it's bridging this middle divide / gap / grove? It makes me think I am missing something really stupid that everyone should know about breadboards but just seems really odd to me. Many Thanks Rab

Breadboards, componenets, and hot glue

Hey all... I i have a breadboard for a small circuit and it has all the regular componenets such as transistors, resistors, diodes, realys, microchips, etc.  I will have the breadboard in a plastic project case and it will be mounted vertically...  I need a way to secure the componens int eh breadboard better so i waas wondering if i can use hot glue...???  I knwo some components such as the microchip is heat sensitive when solidering but i didn't know if hot glue got to hot or if tehre would be other effects to teh circuit in some way...??? Thanks for the help...!!!

FT232RL+breadboard arduino programming problems

I am trying to program a breadboard arduino with an ft232rl programming adaptor that I found online. I made the 'duino using a atmega 328 preloaded with arduino uno optiboot from sparkfun. I attached 5volts power, 16mhz crystal, reset button, and an led to pin 13. When power is supplied, the led pulses then stopps suggesting that the bootloader is working correctly. I then connected a ft232rl to the arduino with rx to tx and tx to rx as well as the DTS pin to a 0.1 UF cap and to reset. Then i connected it to my computer via usb and installed the VCP drivers. It shows up as a com port in the IDE and I selected the board as an uno and tried to flash the blink sketch. The lights on the breakout blink, but i keep getting the avrdude not in sync message. I have tried switching cables, usb ports, pressing the reset button while programming, i have gotten rig of the 0.1 uf cap and jumped directly to DTS, i have tried both sets of drivers and have restarted the board, my computer, and the IDE as well as feeding a separate 5 volt source to the chip. How can I fix this? I am using windows vista SP1 with ide version 1.0.1 and a cheap programmer from ebay.

How can I build a Voltage control circuit?

I want to build a circuit that has a Potentiometer, a switch, and a three digit display, that will give out a voltage of between 0.1-24V so that I could connect it to my breadboard. I'm not an electrical engineer (yet) so I don't know how to build it myself. Can someone give me a schematic?

Looking for Eagle file for standard breadboard power.

Hello;   I am trying to find an Cadsoft Eagle .brd file. I want to plug boards into a standard breadboard, for power. I want to plug onto the thin side. It seems to be a metric measurement, even though it is 0.1" hole spacing. Or if someone has the spacing info for the pins? I measured 4mm on centre, then 40mm to 51mm for the far row. So it would be on the left or right of the breadboard. I always round ground at the outside, and 5v in the middle. So swapping ends will work. Thanks, and I will keep looking Mick M

Is it possible to control the pictured connectors through a breadboard? Answered

Hi there! Simple question: how do I control the pictured connectors? For an electronic project I'm recycling a keypad from an old nokia phone and this is what the datalines look like. So what's the best way to control them through a breadboard? They're so small, there's not enough room for soldering without touching 2 or 3 copper strips at once. (the total width of the strips is about half an inch) Is it uberhaupt possible to connect to these in a DIY hack-project? Thanks!

How do you set up a power switch on a breadboard?

I figured you just run the battery's ground to ground, then have the positive from the battery in a row on the board, then you would switch this to your rail. The problem is that the battery got HOT as hell in a minute, so I must be doing something wrong. Took a peek at another device and it looks like the switch is actually switching ground... what do I do? My switch is a little vertical slider switch that has two positions, and three leads represented by black, red, then green wires.

Needed: a trick to debug a circuit on a breadboard - (The Spaghetti Incident)

The situation: I'm prototyping a circuit with a 14-legged logic IC on a breadboard. What happens: The picture tells it all: The breadboard looks like a Spaghetti Incident. What a mess. It's hard to find the right holes between all the leads sticking out, and avoiding shorts is even trickier. And of course: The circuit doesn't work. Not suprising considering the chaos. No biggie, but debugging a circuit on such a breadboard is a real pain! So please: Share your tips / tricks / magic to keep a proper and readable circuit on a breadboard. Thanks! Ynze PS: The circuit is not very complex btw. It's a solar engine, with one logic IC (NAND gates) and about 15 other parts. The circuit does contain feedback loops, which make it a bit trickier...

Should all grounds go to the same negative bus on a breadboard? Answered

Whenever I see circuit diagrams they just show a ground off some components. When I'm designing on a breadboard should all of these go to the same negative bus on my breadboard in order to function properly? I've got one positive and one negative on each side (standard 6" Radio Shack model). Also, I would assume that a series circuit would be for those instances when you have no negative bus at all and need to ground back into the power supply as well? Thanks!

Hi, I really need help. I've been working on this dern motion detection alarm and am having problems with the delay circuit. I think I have assembled it right and it never works. I have completely re-done it twice! What it is supposed to do is once power from the relay is sent to the 555 timer it will impose a 1 minute delay before sending the power to the alarm/horn. This gives owner adequate time to enter code to disarm. The relay part of the circuit works fine and sends power to the 555 timer and latches as it should. However, the 555 timer never sends power out of pin 3. Could someone please, please, please draw the attached schematic in breadboard fashion so I can double check everything is assembled properly? I would really appreciate it!!! Anyways I will paypal someone $10.00 dollars to draw this in a breadboard layout for me!

Circuit works when I poke a connection, but the connection is sound

So, I've started playing with vfds since this weekend jaycar (if your an Aussie) is selling 11 digit, 10 segment vfds for $1.90. Cheap as :P. It runs off 12v for the segments, 4.5v for the filament. I'm using 3 4094s to control the segments and an atmega168 to control the 4094s, using 3 transistors to up the voltage between the 4094s data, clock and latch pins and the the atmega I/O ports. I'm pretty sure everythings hooked up correctly but, as with most projects, it's not working first time :P. Here's the thing, it works if I poke either the green or brown connection with just one probe of my multimeter/finger it works. My first thought is that i've hooked up my transistors incorrectly, the base is 5v with a 2.2k current limiting resistor, and the collector is 12v with a 5.1k current limiting resistor. To much? I blew out a resistor in initial testing and it got me a little worried :P Thoughts?

DIY IR Droid Module - 3.5mm to Infrared - Breadboard Prototype

Hey guys, I figured since I had grabbed so much great information from you all  I might try my luck with a little more! ;-) I have built this on my breadboard, powered with 6V 150mAh AC-DC converter. First connect saw at least one of the LEDs flicker dark orange and then go out. Assuming this means I burned it out, as afterwards I didn't notice any response. To prevent burning IR LEDs, I'll use visible LEDs, but I'm still concerned that my breadboard has a mistake. I'm pretty much worthless (but willing to learn, at least outside of the classroom setting!) at Phys II, so the debugging is foreign to me.  Pulling out the multimeter... What process should I be using to confirm that everything is powered correctly? The schematic is attached if you would like to customize your response to the hardware, but a general guide to debugging amplified LED circuits would be much appreciated as well! Additionally, if amplification the best way to go? How about a relay? Does that not offer the same (not Phys II...) amplitude? Smaller the better! FREE Schematic publisher(also includeds breadboard and PCB view)IN ALPHA

I did a search and didn't see it on this site anywhere, but I see a huge need for a number of the members here to be able to draw schematics and even simulate a breadboard or PCB. This software is free(but it is still in ALPHA testing). I have no affiliation with this site so I can only answer questions about usability from my opinion. For what a lot of people need on this site to help make "instructables"  that have electronic curcuits in them I think this is perfect. Especially if you can't afford high dollar software, plus if you're not an electronic engineer this software will teach you proper terminalogy and proper drawing designations as well. From what I know, all parts on the program are editable. So if you need a green 3.6v LED you can edit the one that comes default on the program and save it in your tool kit and use it for another project later. Hopefully everybody sees this. If the Mods know of a place to put this where it may be more accesible and visible to everybody here, please move it. Here's the link to find the software. What's a good program that allows you to convert electric circuit schematics to breadboard drawings automatically?

I have very little experience with working with breadboards. I've read tutorials about using them but I want to know if there's a program that could convert any electric circuit schematic I make into a breadboard equivalent automatically.  After all, it would be nice to be able to work with my stuff on breadboards & achieve results, not put in stuff & find out it's not working because I don't know much & how to fix it.

I'm sure the instructables community is going to facepalm when seeing this, but here I go. I wanted to make this It is a lie detector that is supposed to be done using a kit. However I wanted to try my hands at breadboarding so bought all the parts and a breadboard instead. I have looked everywhere, and all I am able to find are indexes of common schematic terms or pictures. If anyone would be willing to help me I would be forever grateful. I have knowledge on how to use a breadboard, and I have made simple LED circuits using a resistor. But when you start having to connect multiple parts to a bus I get lost. Thanks in advance!

How to install electronic components?

Hello. everybody. I'm new to this electronic hobby thing. I'm trying to make a simple sound amplifier, purchased all components, have the schematic of the circuit BUT I have no idea how to install them on a protoboard (breadboard). I've one of these: I don't know how to use these boards. Are those circles painted with copper? How do I turn this into a circuit board?  Eventually I lost my mind and started wiring up the components but it's really messy and time consuming. I couldn't get a mainstream breadboard so I picked the one above, but it seems to me that it's just a support for the component and the wiring part is still inevitable. I can't find tutorials on this topic, heck I don't even know how to search this topic. It's very annoying. Please give me some feedback. Thank you.

I have a problem testing the DC Motor Controller,please help if you can! Answered

Hi! I want to build a robotic arm for a project,but I got stuck while testing the motor driver on the breadboard. I have followed the instructions from this instructable: and I connected the pnp transistors the right way(the author confirmed in the commentaries a long time ago) and also like in the diagram. The problem is that when i turn the power on to the circuit,the motor starts to spin(slowly but it has a snail gearing reducer) and the first mosfet is getting very hot very quickly and also if I try to control the circuit by touching the first contact with a positive voltage it doesn't do a thing.I even tried doing only half of it. I tried to reassemble it again many times,changed the transistors with other new ones,checked the connections and after numerous voltage measurements I concluded that the problem is that when I am powering up the circuit for some reason between the pnp collector and ground there is a 12v voltage and the voltage continues all the way to the resistor to the far left,although at the resistor the voltage is dropped to about 7v. I also simulated the circuit in proteus before i bought the parts(i need 6 good working drivers) and it worked fine. It may be a stupid mistake,but please help me if you have any idea what the problem might be!

Is there a trick to saving money on breadboards, ICs, chip programmers (the devices, not the people), etc.?

I used to have access to a lot through the EE program and just in general, through the university I was at for 8+ we're on an extremely tight budget, and I'd just like to figure out ways of getting parts for projects without having to come up with much/any cash. What's wrong with this wiring?

I've finally decided to undergo my first real electronics project - building a quad-NAND synth ( as per ). It's basically a simple oscillator run through each NAND gate of a 4000 series CMOS IC, fed into each other for manipulation. This is also my first time actually translating schematics to a breadboard, which I've attempted haphazardly - see my attached image. My questions are the following: How many errors have I run into? If I were to test this oscillator, how would I go about installing the audio jack? Am I grounding this correctly? Thanks!

Quick question

Hi, I need help. You see the street I live in has more cats than, well the musical cats,  and seeing as my garden seems to be they're preferred  choice for going to the toilet, I decided to build a motion sensing water sprayer. So off to Amazon I went and purchased some PIR sensors, a solar pump with a DC connection, bread boards wires and batteries and chucked it all together. Now the sensor will light an LED no problem but when I switch in the pump I get nothing. I read on tinternet that transistors can be used to up the juice but I was already far beyond my knowledge of circuits, components and the like. I even tried looking at sketches of PIR sensors to transistors, but after weeks of trying I'm no closer and have nothing to show for it but a headache.  If anyone can help and describe to me (in child like, basic terminology) how I wire up a transistor to a PIR and then a 4-12v 3.5watt pump that would be just super.  Or at-least put me out of my misery and tell me it's not doable.  Thanks.

How to troubleshoot a pir sensor?

Hello I bought a pir sensor off ebay (SKU 14_B000101941) and I plugged it into a solderless breadboard to test it out. I connected a 3v LED between the output and ground and while it does light up, it does not light up when it senses light, it just turns off every 2 seconds, then every 5 seconds. If there is a simple fix to this problem any advice would be appreciated but if not I am willing to buy a different one.

We are making an arduino-based gas detector that uses a combination of LED lights and a beeping piezo element to alert users to different levels of carbon monoxide in the air. We are having some difficulty in coding to have all the elements work together properly. What are some examples of arduino coding that can have a gas sensor chip, LEDs, and a piezo working together with a set of triggers, like the different concentrations of gas?

Ceramic resonator vs. Quartz crystal for arduino? Answered

Hey- I'm going to build some Arduino clones (as posted from ) and was wondering if it would be better to use a crystal or a ceramic resonator. i will be ordering from Tayda Electronics (Ive ordered before, 10 days shipping for rock bottom prices, I'm ok with that) and the resonators and crystals are +-5c. difference, so I was wondering if I could use resonators, since they are a bit cheaper and I'm ordering a few (around 8). Which ones would be better? Also, does anyone know for the circuit from the above link would work with a 4.5v supply if I just left out the 5v regulator? Many thanks- Astroboy907

How can I make a permanent circuit (from a prototype on a breadboard) without soldering?

Due to a chronic illness, I have bad tremor and some involuntary movements, so for the moment I am avoiding dangerous power tools and soldering (I randomly throw things on the floor and don't want to start a fire!). I have been experimenting with simple circuits on a breadboard, as well as Arduino (microcontroller) projects. Once I get a prototype working on the breadboard, how can i convert it to a more durable form for actual use? I have thought of attaching components to styrofoam and connecting the wires on the back with electrical tape, but I am sure there are better ways... For my current project, the circuit will be quite small and will eventually be hidden inside a crocheted animal, but it will need either the arduino or at least a radio (xbee).
