Calling all small engines mechanics!

I have a problematic Ariens YT12 tractor that I have been meddling around with all summer trying to make run perfectly. If I make a video and post it on youtube, to show what it's been doing lately, can someone help me out??!?? I got kinda drunk one weekend and I think I revved the sh*t out of it, the weird things is, I can cut grass with it at full throttle for 2 hours but as soon as I go to rev the engine higher with my modified gas pedal or when I'm adjusting the carb, it just revs up then it starts to sputter and it wants to stall. It's really weird, and although I think I could use a new crankcase gasket, I know the engine is not blown, I'm wondering if maybe I've melted something in the carb, considering how close the carb is to the exhaust pipe on this machine, and the fact that it's a hot running machine (I remember shutting it off one night when it was dark after cutting grass for two hours, the bolts the hold the exhaust on the engine were glowing bright orange.) Anyways I won't bother explaining too much of it, but I'm wondering what I did to my baby and I know a video would probably clarify things a lot better. Something needs to be replaced on it, I know for a fact, it's just a matter of what. I figure even a new carb kit to replace the gaskets and the needle and pin would probably help oodles.

Briggs & Stratton Lawnmower/Go Cart Engine to Power a Boat

I've heard of people mounting small (5 hp or so) Briggs engines in boats to power them. I have a couple of warn out 2-stroke outboards, but they are smelly, smoky, and unreliable. Does anyone know the best way to mount a Briggs (or Tecumseh, Robin, etc) as an inboard? I know there'd have to be shafts and seals, but I'm kind of looking for ideas before I start cutting on the old flatbottom. I have a couple of vertical shaft motors, and one good horizontal.

Would connecting like 2 or more single cylender horizontal engines like briggs and strattons together flywheel to shaft run as like a 2 cylender in line engine? or has anyone done it even? example : if      [0-     represents an engine with the [ being the flywheel, the 0 the crankcase/block and the - a shaft then this is my idea [0-[0-[0-  and so on like a two cylinder would be [0-[0- would this work? what would i have to do to get this to work?

Riding lawn mower blows exhaust thru carb after start. Decompression mechanism is not disengaging. Any ideas why?

I have a riding lawn mower that hit a brick.  It's a briggs 17.5 engine, now it blows exhaust through the carb after start, the decompression mechanism is not disengaging.  I disassembled the engine and deactivated the decompression mechanism and the engine runs normal but needs a jump start from my truck battery.  It is disassembled again, can't find anything wrong.  Any ideas?

My Murray Ride on Mower won't start, I've tried all I know any help will be appreciated.

My 12.5HP Murray ride on mower with Briggs & Stratton motor wont start. The spark plug's good & sparking ok & I've just bought a new battery, there's a fuel leak at the carburetta which I tried fixing by clamping but that hasn't worked. I've been able to get it going twice by connecting the car battery to it , but it's not starting with it's own brand new battery, it back fires a bit but just won't kick over. I just haven't got the transport to get it to a repair shop , if anyone has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate them, thank you.

Homemade Pressure Washer Answered

Hey guys, I had a lawnmower which broke at the blades, so I thought I'd turn it into a pressure washer. So  I welded up a frame from a old hand trolley and bolted on the engine. While I was looking around for a pump I realized that the engines made for pressure washers cannot be used for mowers. Is this the case the other way round?, Will a pump work on this engine? I'm 100% sure one will fit. Has anyone ever attempted/done this conversion? Thanks in advance!! Lawn mower won't start? Answered

I have a Briggs and Straton Troy Bilt self propel mower.  I hit a small stump the other day and the mower cut off.  I generally have trouble with the mower not restarting after it runs for a while and gets hot, but he next day fires up and runs fine.  After hitting this small stump it almost starts after about 4or5 pulls and then it kicks back like there is too much compression in the firing chamber.  It almost pulls the cord out of my hand and a little bit of white smoke comes out of the exhaust.  I have checked the supply to the carburetor, cleaned the carburetor, cleaned the plug and check that it's firing.  I have not checked the fuel, but I have cut grass several time since the beginning of summer with no problem.  What do you think could be the problem?  I'm very mechanically included, but I'm a little stumped on this one.  Thank you for your help!!

Repair of a lower pumping unit of a power washer.?

A couple years ago we purchased a 31/2 hp power washer for those really tough grimy jobs around the house.  Last winter we left it outside by mistake and I suppose there was enough water in the lower unit to freeze and bust.  Anyway now it won't work, it just spews water everywhere coming from the lower unit.  I called the company and asked to purchase the lower pressure unit to replace myself, but they would not sell it to me. In fact the lady told me that the lower unit could not be purchased, but that I would have to buy all the necessary parts to disassemble it and replace the parts. When I told her it looks as if the pressure unit bolts onto the bottom of the motor with 3 bolts and perhaps was keyed onto the shaft with a keyway, she then changed her story and gave me the name of a hardware store in a small town about 20 miles away who could repair it. I took it there and the owner told me that "Sure you could buy just the lower pressure unit and he could fix it for $175.00"  I realize it was my mistake leaving it outside under my deck in the cold weather, but gee I only paid $198.00 for it brand new and the Briggs & Stratton engine still works fine. Can anyone help me?  Thanks--Debra Kay

Attaching a motor to a bike? Answered

I have an old motor that I'd like to attach to a bike. There are a few things that concern me though that I was hoping some people could clear up for me: 1. I'm wondering if maybe the motor is a bit too powerful for a bike. The motor is a briggs and stratton 4-stroke 3 horsepower 127cc engine that runs at 3600 rpm. It originally came from an old edger. I've read of people fitting bikes with 70cc engines, but nothing this powerful. If it is too powerful, is there any way to rectify that problem? 2. As I see it, there are 2 ways the engine could be attached: by friction to the tires, either front or back, or by chain directly to the front gears.  Ideally, I'd like it attached via chain in this way creating a gearshifting system from the already existent gears on the bike. But can a bike's deraileur handle the power that an engine brings, or would it be too much? 3. Lastly, I plan on using a centrifugal clutch. However, I've had bad experiences with them in the past that made startup of the engines difficult. (mainly due to the fact that the clutch kept engaging even though the engine was off. You could see how during startup of a go-kart, this could be frustrating.) Do you think a new and properly selected clutch would behave that way? Thanks a ton in advance!

Modding a Lawnmower into a Shredder / Mulcher

Hello everyone. I have a simplelawnmower with a briggs 6HP motor. I want to use it to shred/grind aged horse manure compost in the easiest way possible. The mower has a side shoot, but it has a spring loaded trap door covering it right now. It also has a trap door for a back discharge bag, which is also closed and I don't have the bag, I have thought of 2 options for this myself. 1) Cut a hole in the sheet metal base of the mower beside the motor, on the left hand side if you were pushing the mower, so that I can shovel in the manure.. Cover the bottom of the mower under the blades with 1/4 - 1/2" hardware cloth. Elevate mower off the ground on cinder blocks over tarp. Hoping it would shoot the shredded mulch out the bottom, through the metal hardware cloth onto the tarp to be collected. Problems I foresee : If the regular discharge outlet on the right side of the mower blows grass out, will my hole i cut in the left side of the mower suck inward, or also blow out? Obviously this wouldn't work if the area I'm trying to shovel in is blasting air out. Would the shredded compost be blown downward? It's really the only place for it to go except the hole I would be shoveling in at. This is the simplest way I can think of. I would prefer to do something like this. Perhaps if it wouldnt work stock like this then I could maybe reverse the blade? I don't have a welder, btw. 2) Much cooler option but I dont really have the time, material, or know how would be to run a pulley to a seperate trash can with its own blade at the bottom and wire mesh under that. Any idears?
