The Canadian Robot

I don't know about anybody else, but the redrawn Robot on the robot contest banner quite appeals to me. For some reason, it feels like he should have a Canadian accent... I'm not suggesting replacing *the* Robot, but it would be nice to see the Canadian version appearing on merchandise, say as a small logo on a shirt, or on a new badge. I would certainly have made this project easier to make... EDIT: I roughed up some versions of my own, with a combination of Inkscape and an oooold copy of Photoshop.

Canadian Lego In Space!!!

Two 17 year old Canadian Grade 12 students sent a Lego man into space and captured the entire 97 minute flight on video. The helium filled balloon used to send the Lego man (with Canadian Flag in hand) to space reached 24 kilometers above sea level. (almost 15 miles). sealing cuts ends of timber

Have a section of a neighbour's oak tree that was taken down last year (fall).  Am storing it in our garage for 3 years before attempting to make a block out of it for a side table in the house.  Heard that the cut ends need to be sealed so the wood doesn't check and crack.  Is this correct and, if so, what kind of wax/sealant and where would I find this? Redneck Rollercoaster

This is called the Redneck Rollercoaster, but that's not quite the truth. This is an insane car mod that looks fun as hell and has the danger factor to bump it up to make it extra stupid. So who doesn't love some stupidly dangerous fun? Weirdos. Who loves it? Canadians.FYI, the guy on the left on the sofa is the driver. And how it works...

what does a Canadian penny weigh? Answered

I'm working on a model plane right now, a mig 31, and you have to add in the weights before you have any chance of actually knowing if they are enough or not. the instructions say to put in 7grams, but i don't know how many pennies i would need for that. can someone tell me how much a penny weighs., or better yet, just how many i need? thanks.

Is there anywhere cheap in southern ontario to buy Acrylic sheets thats not home depot or things like that?

Ive seen some prices of acrylic sheeting for american stores and the price difference is astonishing for the same thing here in canada. As the title says I'm looking for a place or a store to get some sheets for a few projects from here and I don't want to spend that much for just a couple pieces. Is there anyone on here from southern ontario that has had the same problem, and potentially with a solution? :)

Cannot sign up with Canadian postal code

When I sign up with a canadian postal code, I am redirected to the home page. I can see the large version of secondary images in an instruction step, as though I were signed in. However, it won't let me sign in later, and it appears as though neither my user name nor my email are in the system, as indicated when I check the availability of my user name in the sign up page, or when I request that my password be sent to me. Signing up with 90210 as my postal code, however, works just fine.

Black Holes aren’t Black they are Gray?

Ok so 40 years ago Stephen Hawking came up with the theory of Black holes and today they are not black but gray. It turns out that the black holes Hawking wrote about in 1974 — those places in the space-time continuum that can devour galaxies and even trap light forever — may not exist in the way that he proposed decades ago. So I read the paper. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.5761v1.pdf I found it a bit dry compared to A Brief History of Time but that is the life of a paper. I have always believed a theory is just that and no more, prone to evolve or be disproved with the advent of new theories and facts. After all it is just a theory and not a fact even though many of these theories enable us to the most amazing things. Which reminds me of a joke. A Canadian fisherman was down south fly fishing with an American fisherman that happen to be a marine biologist. Soon the Canadian fisherman caught a one pound brook trout and stated it was just a baby and threw it back. The American marine biologist not objecting to catch and release, objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. He explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. The Canadian fisherman retorted I catch five pounders in the Boyne River all the time and that was just a baby where he comes from. The American marine biologist objected to the Canadian calling a one pound Salvelinus fontinalis a baby. Again he explained to the Canadian fisherman that the Salvelinus fontinalis is genetically unable to grow larger than one pound. Not wanting to argue the Canadian fisherman let the subject lye and spent the rest of the day fishing throwing their catch back. At the end of the day they exchanged addresses and parted friends. A month later the American marine biologist received a parcel in the mail in it was a frozen five pound brook trout, distraught he began to write the Canadian fisherman a letter. “Dear Mr. Fuddel Duddel Thank you for the five pound specimen of the Salvelinus fontinalis, and thank you very much for ruining perfectly good science with a fact. Sincerely John Doe”

I'm trying to buy a textbook, and it is much cheaper on amazon.co.uk (UK version) or on amazon.ca (Canadian). How to harness the energy in snow

I found a thread that asked this question previously on instructables but the author wanted to harness the kinetic energy of falling snow, and many of the criticisms involved the unpredictability of when snow will fall.I am specifically curious if it is possible to create a machine to remove snow that uses the energy of the snow itself. Ideally, it would melt the snow and use the water or steam to power itself. The things Canadian winters do to the mind...

1/2" PVC inner diameter?

I was looking at all the excellent instructables about marshmallow guns, but I have a concern. Call of duty 4: K'nex warfare - reflex edition

I had an idea. If I invite a few friends round and persuade one of them to bring their HQ camera, I can do some decent filming. I am basically making a 5 minute long video based on CoD 4: MW. I am thinking of using 12 characters on 3 teams (4 per team, if you can't count very well). On these teams, I am thinking: Team 1 The Jamalam (Leader and mid range assault) Dj Radio (Scouter, close assault) Viccieb.1993 (Sniper) Killer~SafeCracker (Oodammo specialist) Team 2 Trauts (Leader, assault) I am Canadian (Heavy  Canadian weapons guy) Lowney (Sniper) TheDunkis (Oodammo specialist) Team 3 ZOMGMYGUNSHOOT999999FTSRSLYLOL (Leader, Assaulter) I ARE NOT GRAMER USE CORECT BUT NO1 CAREZ (Assaulter) IAMBETTERTHANMEPAINSRSLYLOL (Sniper) 999999999999999999999999999989 (Tube and stick specialist) This will take place in a large park, obviously using k'nex guns. This will be filmed partly through method acting (ie, an actual knex war will take place for part of the day). But the rest will have a script. Any ideas will be appreciated :) (btw, TEAM3 WINZ!!111!11)

Green Roofs Capture Carbon

"Recently, Royal Dutch Shell PLC received $865 million from the Canadian government for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. Green roofs, rooftops with plants, can capture and store carbon, according to a new study by Michigan State University in East Lansing. The technology to build green roofs already exists, and they can be created for much cheaper than a CCS project."The key to fighting global warming is capturing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in new reservoirs that weren't storing carbon before," lead researcher Kristin Getter said...."This looked like a rather elegant answer to the Green Question.

Pig farmer proves that great ideas can come from anywhere

Here's a story with a great moral to it. If you're observant, then you can come up with a brilliant solution to a problem. And it doesn't matter if you went to a fancy design school for it or just need to solve a problem. Canadian pig farmer Mary Haugh had a problem; multiple heart attacks put her husband out of commission, and she alone had to somehow control and herd their 3,000 hogs through the barn. Traditional methods of getting pigs to move are to use a stick, an electric prod or a "chase board," a length of wood the farmer wields horizontally to angle the pigs in a particular direction.Haugh then came up with a roller that dispenses a swath of red cloth--a sort of farm version of the retractable "lane guides" that movie theaters use. Working with her brother Peter Jones, a mechanical engineer, she developed a 30-pound stainless steel prototype that retracted fabric like a windowshade and could unspool 50 feet of material. The pair also designed it so one end could attach to existing stabling, enabling one-person operation. The resulting product rolls up neatly, can easily be carried and deployed by one person, and meets Canadian standards for biosecurity as it can be washed with the pressure washers most farmers already own to clean other equipment. More importantly, it works far better than anything that came before it--testing trials reveal it saves 70% of the time needed to herd hogs, which translates to hours per week. link
