Hi I want to put my nexus 7 into my car but i need to access to my factory radio behind my tablet. Nexus 7 tablet installed in car. Is there a way for it to read/display oem a/c and bluetooth info? (CAN-BUS)

I hope this is the right section, this is my first post in the forum section. I've just heard that somebody got it to work for the 2010-2012 models, although I have no solid info of this. Our systems for the 2013 model are different. So this is specifically for the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Nexus 7 platform. Basically as the title states. We over at gencoupe.com are currently installing the Nexus 7 tablets in the dash. So far we've connected basic features, power/shut down w/car, and to read OBDII features in digital gauges via bluetooth using apps such as dashcommand. The only problem with installing this set up is that our OEM LCD display that displays a/c information, and bluetooth caller info now has to be removed. All the manual controls still work, they just aren't displayed. The Nexus can be attached to SD cards, USB hubs, etc. but obviously doesn't have a can-bus connection, nor a program to read it. Suggestions to get this info to display on the tablet? One suggested Arduino, but would still need an app programmed. Anybody have some time on their hands? I can provide more info as needed! Thanks

What potentiometer to use as audio control in car stereo?

Hello all I am working on installing a tablet into my car instead of the original head unit. But since the tablet will be permanently mounted inside the dash, I have no way of turning the volume up or down on the tablet, therefore I need to install a potentiometer into the audio cable that goes into my amplifier.  I have tried with a dual LIN 100kOhm potentiometer, which worked to an extend, but not as well as I had hoped.  It did turn the volume up and down, but it couldn't turn the volume all the way down as I had hoped it would be able to. I just want it to be able to turn up quite loud, but also turn all the way down, so I don't have to pause the music everytime I want it to be quiet.  Cheers! Mathew

Powering an Android Tablet without a battery?

So I bought my sister this Visual Land tablet about 2 years ago. Eventually both the mini usb and charging port broke off from the logic board as expected from a cheap product. So I have this nice idea of using the tablet as a car nav/entertainment system. simply get rid of the battery and push 5v via a standard cigarette light usb adapter or make one with some 5v regulators and done. I tried resoldering the charge port. I get 5.23v on random points on the board but I get 0v at the battery with the charging port connected. I pulled the battery and tested the terminals on the board with the charging port connected no battery, 0v at the board and the battery alone is also 0v most likely dead and trash as it sat for 1.5 years in a shoebox untouched. So I pulled out my homebuilt psu power supply and hooked up the variable output to the battery terminal on the logic board. When pushing 3.7v~ I can get the first splash screen to show up but the tablet shuts off right after. When pushing 3.8v any thing higher the first two splash screens show and android starts to boot but the tablet powers off soon after.. So i decided to risk it and pushed 5v directly to the board. It started up fine and booted into android normally except for the low battery issue and some heat coming from the processor. Maybe a heatsink and rigged laptop fan into the casing could fix that? It shut off normally as if it had a dead battery. How much voltage doeas a generic android board need? Current?Does the board take 3.7v but since theres no battery it wont boot? How could I fake a fully charged battery? Or could I possibly flash a custom rom? Do you guys need more info? I could provide more pics Note that the battery is a 3.7v 3500mah li-ion battery with only a positive and negative hookups. Also i took some tape and covering off the battery to see if it possibly had its own controller board. It did have a small  pcb board but it seems that its only "a transfer" board, it takes the power from this cloth like cable and passes it into the wire thru the pcb. Should I try to hookup 5v straight to the battery to test it out? Battery has 0v so it might be useless.

How to make 12V 2 switch touch panel for car?

Hi guys, I am looking to make a 2 button switch panel for car. I'd like to have capacitive buttons rather than ordinary switches if possible. Something similar to this but smaller and only 2 buttons 1 button needs to be momentary as this is an external power button wired into tablet. 1 button needs to be latching (press for on, press again for off) this controls the accessory power (amp/usb hub etc linked to this) I would like to have them backlit and behind some acrylic so you can just see the light but activate the switch. The capacitive touch buttons I have seen so far all seem to be under 5v and I'll need to work with 12v since it will be inside car. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Small variable power supply from car charger?

A friend of mine gave me a bunch or car USB charger used in his company to charge the tablets and phones the delivery drivers use. His problem was that they ordered 10 exclusive for Apple products and 15 generic ones that have the standard 1amp/2.1amp USB outlets. I was asked to take a look and see if the problem is easy to fix. Long story short it was as apart from 2 blown fuses they all suffered from bad solder connections for the cigarette  lighter contacts that failed. Anyway I looked the chips up used to regulate it all and to my surprise the datasheet said they are "variable" from about 0.3V to the max supply voltage of 32V or even 40V. Checked two of mine and same story for one, the other is dirt cheap unregulated and only used to charge a flashlight. But it made me wonder... Since the output voltage is created with a simple resistor divider giving the right feedback voltage it is very easy to adjust them to whatever might be required. Could be a far better option than our standard adjustable voltage regulators and easier plus cheaper than building your own circuit. All the benefits of short circuit protection, under voltage shut off and self regulated max power to prevent overheating for 5 bucks from the next china shop. Give it a go one day before you power wasting old school regulators ;)

Help requested for purchase of components

Hi. I'm a newbie to embedding but I have a project that needs this and there is no commercially available solution that I can find so I need to learn how to build it myself. This can and will be done in modules... I figure I can tackle one task at a time until I end up with a complete working system, but use the system in the meant time, as I get it completed. The main goal is for an electric motorcycle conversion dashboard,  which will include a password protected relay switch "ignition key" to power the vehicle on securely (Task #1), a user configurable display to show speedometer, odometer, tripometer, clock, battery pack voltage, motor rpm/temp, controller temp, coolant temp, etc via a waterproof rugged tablet (probably a Windows 10 tablet, probably with an Android emulator installed). I'm finding that there are so many different options available, I don't know what to purchase. I want to spend my hard earned money wisely and just buy what I need the first time. Instead of learning the "hard" way, I want to learn the "smart" way. Please help me get started. Thank you in advance!

Arduino racecar dashboard help

Hey guys and girls. I'm hoping i can get some help here. We're building a race car as our project and were at the stage of needing a dashboard and the electrics. Now i know there are a lot of different units out there that run on the OBD/ CANBUS system but our car doesn't use it (our motor and gearbox is mid 80s with carbies and such) My problem, I have absolutely no experience in coding or Arduino, i've read multiple books and tutorials but there's still a lot that my brain doesn't understand (i guess there's a difference from copying someones code and writing it yourself) I know exactly how i want the finished unit to look like and what i want but i just cant work out how. What i need *An accurate tacho *Accurate speedo *Oil pressure *Engine Temp This all needs to be in a display form that is easy to read be it either one big LCD, an android tablet or a mixture of LED and LCD displays Any idea where to start with this? USB GPS module tracking with custom application? Answered

I am working on getting some data acquisition integrated with a mini Baja car we're working on, and I would like to be able to track position with GPS, and hopefully speed too, but thats secondary to trying to track position. I don't know anything about programming, so I will be finding a programmer to help me out, but I was wondering if this is the best way to go about this or are there gps modules made for this type of application? Mobile Virtual Presence Device? Answered

Right, so in "The Big Bang Theory" there is an episode where Sheldon makes an rc stand with a monitor on, and it has live footage of his face on it.  There are ways to do this, but they all seem to point to using an rc car with a 10 metre range and 30 minutes battery.  The flaw with this, is that if you want to be at work using one, or at someone's house with it, then you're gonna need a lot more than 10 metres!  How can you make it so that you can control it anywhere, either using wifi or just connecting somehow?  (I'm sorry, I'm really bad at electronics, so excuse my poor understanding.)  As an example, you don't need wifi to text someone, so do you need it to control an rc vehicle?  Ideally, I'd like to make one at about £300-£400, and as like the one from the big bang theory as possible, so not just a tiny stand that people have to keep charging and you have to crane your neck to see.  I'd be happy to use a £60 tablet with skype for the video, but what I'm mainly concerned about is how to control the rc stand/vehicle from a distance away. Commercial stations broadcast from "abroad".One record player in the house, which still have a position on the speed selector for playing 78rpm discs.Headphones the size of scotch eggs were the norm, not a fashion statement.No mobile phones at all.No game systems.No hand-held units.No home computers (the ZX81 came out when I was 14).The internet wasn't even a pipedream.The largest libraries had microfiche.Foreign holidays were a luxury - the only £10 trip was a one-way ticket to Australia.I did not see a black man in the flesh until I was 13. Oriental later the same year.Seat belts were not only optional, they were often not fitted.Ladders were toys, not a risk to life and limb.No speed cameras. The future of mobile operating system or the end for "hackers" and rooting?

For mayn years it was almost logical to get full root access on your new smartphone or tablet.The other fraction might now it as "jailbreaking"...No one really needs it unless they are not happy with they way the mnufacturer designed the operating system and features.The removal of bloat, apps the user never needs, is still the most common reason for rooting.Custom ROM's offering a different experience are right behind.Now we also have TV's, entertainment boxes of all kinds, even from our ISP's directly.The main provider for the operating system is now Google with only a few "competitors" left.Apple has a strong hold of the mobile and tablet sector too but is not really presented in other areas.Android is still open source but Google heavily modifed it to suit the needs of data collecting and security for features like banking, access control and so on.What is good for the normal user and perfect for those with security in mind can be really bad for those actually just using a device.No matter why you buy a new phone from your provider, you almost never buy it for the added apps and services.Rooting has become more and more difficult.One reason of course is constant security updates and removing possible access options for even simple things like getting USB debugging and an unlocked bootloader.People dedicated to find ways to remove provider locks, creating custom firmwares or the basic tools required to work with firmwares were called hackers.If you buy a new car and decide to modify it with a new engine, seats or whatever than no one will stop you.So why don't we have the same rights for our electronic companions?I wouldn't call it hacking, I would call it actually owning and controlling your device instead of Google letting control you - or Apple, but who cares....The other reason is dead simple: Those guys who started it all have retired or found employoment with those they fooled for so many years.Chainfire should ring a bell for anyone ever concerned with rooting.The master is gone now and only a few people are willing to take his legacy.For Asian devices the community over there is better off but for our market region right now Magisk seems to be the only option left for modern devices.The sneaky ways to lock us out....Security comes at a price, simple as.You can offer secrity for money transfers if the device is not trustworthy.Same for online streaming - you want the money for what you give and prevent that someone is able to make unwanted recordings without encryption.The list goes on with access control system and literally everything we use our devices for that involves some security.Even with the lates PIE systems Google's own devices are still quite friendly in terms of gaining root access.Different story though if a manufacturer makes full use of all the latest addition at Google's disposal.Device security no longer starts with the boot we see.It is now possible to create a hardware based tree of trust.This means any modification to anything will cause a failure.This locks out all "tools" able to read out partitions and vital data while a device is in fastboot mode.And of course said fastboot can be fully disabled as well now.For security reason a so called A/B configuration is used.Updates come over the air and are applied to the dormant system.Next start will boot the new system and then update the old one, no requirement to manually apply and update.The recovery can also be abandoned and replaced by a system using a copy on the device itself that is updated through OTA updates with the firmware.So both ways to gain official access can be full removed from the user.From there we get encryption, hash checks and literally everything working in its own user space - a full SELinux enviroment at the highest level.There are already devices utilising a lot of this and so far the only way to get any sort of insight was done by those intercepting OTA updates on a router level.And apart from quickly changing the encryption with the next updates nothing was gained.Is it all coincidence?Of course not.Well known leaks were kept open for years.Kernel updates gave improvements and closed really old leaks but never all known ways.With the retirement of the best rooting experts these holes were suddenly closed.Checks of latest kernel releases showed that there is no known vulenerabilities anymore that can be misused to gain access.And those finding new ones and making them available for us are bascally gone now.Encryptions and packing algorithms changed, same thing for the actual handling of partitions and rights.Anyone with a decent understanding of how the old ways worked will be able to figure it out with some time wasted on it.From there however the outcome is often dark.The tools needed to work with these new files are not always updated anymore.The developer simply moved on and most of the time without publishing his source codes.And the still best way to protect your firmware from tampering is to encrypt it.In the old days it was enough to sign a ZIP file with a release key not available to the public.Custom recoveries allowed us to get around this.This still works to some extent but now we also get additional checks starting from the bootloader.A modified system will be detected and stopped and a stock system will stop i a modified boot is detected.Even using a custom recovery by flashing or through fastboot is preventable now.Right now the only way for most new devices is a total wipe and the installation of an unsecure firmware with everything.As you already guessed this is to prevent now as well.So does all this rooting stuff actually concern you?Of course not!If you never had any need for rooting or no clue what to do differently with a rooted device than you are a happy camper.But your neighbour or friend might think differently.You see, I have two problems when it comes to "stock" devices.a) I have no clue what data they collect from me and what it might be used for.b) I do not like being forced to agree to terms that are endless and of questionable content just to use the damn thing.For crying out loud: In most cases it is now impossible to even set up a new device without working internet and a Google account.....
