Methane Oxidation Catalysts? Answered

I've been helping to come up with a small engine that runs on methane extracted from compost. One issue that I've run into is the fact that completely utilizing the gas isn't very easy, and some can escape the exhaust. I've heard of catalysts that help to completely burn the stuff, but I'm completely unsure of how to get them for such a small project, what price they'd be, or how to make them. Does anybody have any tips?

Fibreglass resin catalyst - any easy thinners available?

I am in the need to make a quick decision before the weekend. A local shop is closing down and I was offer a massive amount of good quality resin for price that you could call stealing LOL Only problem is that there is no catalyst included as the owner realised the container had a leak the stuff was long gone. Buying the required amount of catalyst down here so I consider making my own. For obvious reasons I won't go into the details of making... Problem on my end is that the catalyst needs to be thinned down to 40-60% to prevent unwanted results handling and using it. All the commercial products use thinners based on very hard to obtain organic solvents. From what I could read they are added to prevent mis-use of the product, which means there might be other solvents that work for the thinning without affecting the resin or curing process in a negative way. Big question: What type of easy to obtain solvent can I use for this without compromising the resin or curing? And before anyone asks: No I won't tell you - if you don't know what I am talking about you don't need to ask on how to make it as I won't tell. And no again, I am not looking for ways to make the resin thinner - I need to dilute the pure catalyst to make it useable and safe. My sole intention is make a good deal but unless I find a suitable thinner I won't buy close to 300 liters of resin....

hydrogen peroxide

I am wanting to make some sulphuric acid because it is on of the most useful acids around and i have ran into a problem. after you burn sulphur to create sulphur dioxide you then need a catalyst to form sulphur trioxide and then dissolve in water. which catalysts could be used and could you just let the sulphur dioxide dissolve in hydrogen peroxide (so2-----so3------h20--------h2so4 or so2 ------ h202---------h2so4).if this would work how could you get a large enough concentration of hydrogen peroxide?

Does anyone know of a good 1 to 1 resin/catalyst and metal powder that can be gotten locally (to Phoenix, AZ)? Answered

I am making a custom sword. The intent is to make it out of resin. I have made the blank out of wood and will be making the mold from silicone. I currently have Castin Craft Clear resin. I have made a few sample casts and the results are fairly inconsistent. I have made it from straight resin (plus Catalyst) which made it too brittle or too tacky, either too much or not enough catalyst. I tried to do a cold cast by mixing in Aluminum Powder (I used Stop leak for radiator repair), but that made the cast like rubber. I am not keen on buying stuff online and can't source Real AL Powder locally and the only resin I can find is either the stuff I have or Fiberglass resin at Home Depot. I am trying to end up with a finished product that will not be tacky and will not shatter if I bump it against something. It will be used as a Renaissance Festival Costume piece, not for real use. Any other Resin casting suggestions would be welcome as well.

My PC all of a sudden lags on all games.

Here's what happened. I got on today and started up MW2 on my PC. I had just installed a new mod, so i thought nothing of it when it lagged down to 20 FPS, perhaps, when it usually runs at 40-60 FPS. I got bored eventually and went to organize my PC, which included uninstalling a lot of old programs and making new folders. I decided to play borderlands when I was done. I noticed there was a considerable difference in frame rate from the previous day. Same thing with all of my other games, Minecraft, HL2 and all others. The only thing i did overnight was install that MW2 mod through bittorrent ( don't worry, it's legal. Alteriwnet, google it.) I've played around with my GFX card, AMD Raedeon 6540, and no dice. I've played with the clock in catalyst to no avail. I've installed game booster and boosted, but i can't get the lag to go away. The best results I've had are ending one of the 2 processes named wininitt.exe. My FPS almost got back to normal. I Think it has something to do with graphics, as nothing else is really slowed down. Also, I've tried uninstalling the MW2 mod. I played around with my windows 7 theme, too. PC specs Intel i5-2400@3.10 GHz Dual core 4 GB ram AMD Raedeon HD 6450 GFX Windows 7 Home premium -NYPA -Update The lag has been abolished. I don't know how, but it's gone. I did not touch my computer for a long time, iI guess to wait it out, but i'm not the only user of my computer, so it was used. Protips for people coming to this thread because they have the same problem, Scan for viruses Do regular HDD cleaning, i.e defragment, delete old files, registry clean. Lower GFX settings Update drivers Clean the computer's internals -NYPA

Compass on a chip

Does anyone know what I need to have a Compass on a chip? The idea is for a horizontal ring of LEDs with the northern LED lit. If the ring turns, the light will chase towards the north most point on the ring. I've found single and dual pole compass chips, but I admit a lot of ignorance about chips in general. Anyone have a shopping list for such a project?

Robotic Biomimicry

Reading up a bit, I came across this, and thought I would like to try do something like that, but a spider. It's a "robo roach", a RObotic Autonomous Crawling Hexapod, or ROACH. Bio mimicry is starting to become a leading factor in robots for use in the field. Biomimicry itself is quite amazing the way it uses what works in nature to, well, work! Although there's something interesting about this cockroach, by the way it's made. It uses a simple bi-axial movement principal to keep things simple and cheap. They have a download link for the episode, just go to and zoom forward to 12:25 and watch it. I'd recommend it, it's quite interesting. Would any one have any information about this? I'd love to try make a robot that's based on an animal, preferably small, but there aren't many details any where. I'd like to hear your ideas about this biomimicry, what would you make and what would you use it for?

Hard drive hydrogen fuel cell? Answered

I have just learnt that hard drive platters are coated in platinum, i know platinum is a catalyst in the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to for water and produces electricity. This is basically what happens in i hydrogen fuel cell. Has anyone tried using these platters in making a fuel cell and if so how successful was it? Does anyone know if the platinum quantity high enough for this to be viable? I would like to here any ideas on this quite interesting project.

I need help with my downgraded Acer Extensa 4420, downgraded to XP. Can;t get graphics to be recognized with ATI.

I finally got XP to install on my Acer Extensa 4420, that comes with Vista on it, but I've run into a problem. I have been going through the drivers, and some don't install, here is one of them. I can't update my graphics card, it wont even install Catalyst control!My card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250, integrated and whatnot. Please help!?

Anyone savvy with Air Electrodes??? Thanks! =)

I'm posting this after having googled, of course...I work with DIY fuel cells using off the wall fuels. By far, the most expensive component of my FCs is the Air Electrode which I purchase from Electric Fuel Ltd. in Israel. The material was invented in 2008 (as far as I know) and EF were the ones who bought the patent (according to the inventor himself...sorry but his name eludes me). Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone knows how to make good air electrodes. Something that would give me at least a vold in reference to the SHE (V=0) and a current density of up to a few hundred mA/aq cm...The stuff is basically this, from the electrolyte side to the air side: Separator paper, Carbon powder with Manganese or Cobalt catalyst mixed in (and a binder of some sort, I suppose), a Nickel mesh (current collector) and a bit more Carbon+catalyst then a microporous Teflon(r) sheet (permeable to gases but not to liquids). I cant find nickel mesh where I live but the other stuff I could get--the Teflon(r) being replaceable with oil paper??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. N.B: I am Not trying to infringe on a patent, just trying to make some "homebrew" air electrodes for R&D; since I am still (steam comes out of ears) self-funded and low on Thanks a lot!!! =)

Does anyone know what type of glue I can use on the bracket of my drivers side visor? Answered

I have tried super glue and twice jbweld. If I knew what type of plastic it was that may help too. The visor is for a 02 Santa Fe.?  This is not the first time this visor has broken, I had the dealer replace two of them for cracking on the arm part. The first time I used jbweld it didn't do anything so I added more catalyst and it stuck, but as soon as we had some very frigid temps, I moved it and it broke. The whole movement of the arm is plastic upon plastic, not the best system, the tolerance is very small so it increases the friction on the parts and the stick together when it is cold.

Urethane rtv mold rubber? I would like to buy some in a local store....i cant find it anywhere....any ideas? i live in central pa and i would like to not resort to ordering online its just easier to pick it up and bring it home and use it hahah im impatient.....anywho some ideas would be helpful. A local hobby store is selling liquid plastic with catalyst for $49.00!!! i had no idea it was that expensive.. P.s if you are skilled in the ways of mold makings(i am not) and ideas in anyway can be helpful! Can i use liquid plastic with the urethane rtv to cast my stuff with? Windows 8 - Windows 7 drivers for ATI mobility radeon 4200 hd for use in windows 8?

Hi, I've recently installed Windows 8 on my laptop after windows 7 died on me and my DVD drive failed. I had to put my hdd in another laptop to install then transfer it back into my laptop, the problem I'm having though is that Windows 8 has installed some random drivers for my video card (ATI mobility radeon 4200 hd) whereas I need the Windows 7 driver which I cannot access. Has anybody found a DIRECT DOWNLOAD to the driver? All I can find is the catalyst control centre and such which completely ignores the card and allows Windows to install it's own stuff :LAny help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Will

Home theater Pc

I'm making a home theater pc for out in my living room. I had some problems with getting colour through tv out for some ungodly reason, but installing the catalyst drivers for my ati card seemed to solve the problem. Anywho, the specs are:Pentium 2 450mhz192mb of ram (I have more that was origionally in it, but I was having problems with it just flashing off and corrupting the hard drive, bad ram = corrupt data so I have yet to sort out what's bad)A really old 6 gig hd, I plan to buy a 80 gig hd for it in about 2 weeks.Ati Radeon 7000 w/ dual vga out and tv out obviouslyI think it's fine for playing movies and the such, and it's a generally fast computer, (I have xp pro installed) but the hd slows it down unbearably so hopefully I get that fixed soon with the new hard drive. I've had a 80 gig in it before and I know how fast it gets. Anywho, I need suggestions for a media front, like windows media center type of thing, because on a tv, it's rather hard to see the print on the screen and navigate through files and music. I appreciate anyone that can suggest and software.

Large Scale Mould Making - the Evolution

I'm so excited, I now have + hours of video to cut and share :)Today we:Finished the split standSet the finished plug in the stand and aligned our waterlineBondo'd stand and plug for a flange lineApplied mold release waxSprayed PVA (Poly Vinyl alcohol)Applied a polyester tooling resin with cabosil (A silica thickener) to serve as the inner mold face (outer shape/surface of final product)Applied 4 layers of chopped fiber with polyester resin (took about an hour and we're still a tad bit high - even with good ventilation)Mind you the resin is catalyzed with MEK-P (Methyl Ethyl Keytone Peroxide -- some call it rocket fuel. It will eat the flesh off the bone and then eat the bone.Why am I so excited? Because we finished today and the catalyzed resin was COOK-ING. "Too hot to touch" is about 180 for the average meat human. It's well above too hot to touch - in fact, the radiant heat is a bit much for most meat peoples. And that's with the prescribed 1% catalyst.More information coming soon :) It's going to take 8 hours to capture all that video :PPhoto: Adding more PVA to the pot in the middle of the second coat.

OxyHydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Boosting Anyone?

So folks I think I'm gonna give the water-into-OxyHydrogen-into-fuel booster gag a try. There's a couple of shady ibles on the subject, so I wanted a little more professional input. I'd like to go about this all scientific like so my questions kinda boil down to:Measure / calculate the amount of air used by my car in one second (in volume)What's the best catalyst to useMeasure the amount of hydrogen and oxygen produced in one second (in volume)Accurately measure fuel efficiencyI met a chap who did it to his car, I'll try to wrangle some out of him. Bit of an interesting blighter, 50-60ish black chap with dreadlocks from Gloucester.I'll be giving it a try in a less then optimal test vehicle however. Carburated '94 Buick Century, V6. I'm sure the idea would "theoretically" work better in a smaller engine. If this system works at all (upwards of 10% increase in efficiency), I'll make an improved version and iblify it. The car will be used on primarily the same route, a good mix of highway and 40 ish speeds, and I'll leave the air conditioner off full time so's not to get false readings.Any input plz? Ancient technologies revisited - solar cells during the bronze age!?

In this second part of my series I will discuss the theory(ies) of the existence of solar cell like technology.If you have batteries you have something that needs electricity - DC.But you might also need some easy way to charge them unless you have a generator...We only "recently" developed solar cells, although the theoretical idea behind the is a bit older.In ancient Aegypt was enough sun to use solar cells it still is.But you would need to know how to grow silicium crystals first...And you also need a way to cut very thin slices of them in the right orientation...Not so mainstream scientists already showed us advanced maching marks and impossible accuracy being used throughout ancient Aegypt.So we can rest assured they knew how to deal with precision and complex math.Still growing crystal is far fetched, especially considering that through ancient times being one with nature and the gods was priority number one.A group of now dishonered scientists came up with the theory that in ancient times the sun was used more indirectly to generate electricity.Their claim based on some pictured carvings and other things the found goes like this:Arrays of tubes where used that contained a biological matter.Alternating tubes used different metals and were connected by non conductive joints.A slot in the top, throughot the length of the tubes allowed sunlight to get in.Apart from a lot of waste gas this biological matter than caused the tubes to get charge through an ion exchange process on a cellular level.A good theory should always be double checked and peer reviewed by independent schientists.If you can replicate the findings it must be true.A bad theory should not get you more than a bit of laughter and mean reports in related publications.So these scientists must have really overdone it, right?After all, they lost all credibility and most of them now have unqualified jobs far away from anything they ever studied - like stockig supermarket shelves...By really pure conincidence NASA developed a "bio matter (Re)Re-generator" just little over two years after our group of scientists lost their jobs.What does it do you wonder....Well, for long missions away from earth it makes sense to find better ways of dealing with (human) organic waste.Recycling the water from it is one thing but it requires lots of energy that could be used for other things.And it still leave a "$%'& load of soild waste.NASA "found" a bacteria capable of reducing organic waste products in a liquid supension very quickly into most basic end products.Easy to recycle, re-use or if in doubt discard as there is only around 3% or the original solid waste left.The bateria only needs enough sunlight be become realy active.Double bonus: It won't produce any CO2 as a gas but instead produces a soild form of calcium "waste".Calcium is not only what makes our bones, it is also very useful for other things.The seperation of this valuable solid calcium waste comes with the side effect of producing electricity at the catalyst arrays.An "unforseen" side effect that is since then subject to further research.I did say coincidence already, did I ?Another is that the bacteria found by NASA is from the same family our disgruteld scientists claimed to might have been used.Ok, twice is still plausible, isn't it?But using the same material for the "catalyst arrays" as our scientists suggested for the slotted tubes make three....In some old Indian texts we find hints to giant "anti-mirrors" used by the gods to harness the sun.Studied close up they appeared like highly polished silvery metal.But hit by full sun and they turned black and stopped to reflect any light.We know that if the later would have been true this black would have had to be less reflective than Vanta Black and similar inventions.Assume it was true...A "solar cell" that utilises almost all incoming light would have an efficiency grade we could not even dream about.Would also mean it would still be very efficient on a cloudy winter day.The "black" would also mean they should have heated up like no tomorrow but they were claimed to feel extremely cold even on the hottest day...From interpretation of ancient stories of the folks from south america we know the gos use "lightning" as a weapon against enemies as well as for contructions and "artwork" on a big scale.So there was electricity widely used on our earth at times where our books tells us we only had oil lamps and at best bronze tools...If the really had solar technology might remain a mystery forever but we at least know they knew how to use electricity...

GID Vials, Tritium, TRASERS, Powders and Chemicals GLOW IN THE DARK!

TRITIUM! So I get a lot of questions from my post and instructables. Tritium Vials are Radioactive Hydrogen H3, also known as hydrogen-3 is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It is contained in small glass vials coated in colored phosphor then encased in glass or sealed plastics. These are commonly seen in Gun Sights, Watches (TRASERS) and some Emergency Exit Signs. It is the most efficient chemiluminescent reaction known. up to 15% quantum efficiency. GID Paint or Powders are "charged" with light or daylight sources as with your traditional kids toys or stickers. New products are brighter, glow longer and are now waterproof, have many colors and applications. Also this is occasionally confused with the chemical illumination. However these paints powders and materials use common phosphorescent materials include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. Use of zinc sulfide for safety related products dates back to the 1930s. However, the development of strontium oxide aluminate, with a luminance approximately 10 times greater than zinc sulfide, has relegated most zinc sulfide based products to the novelty category. Strontium oxide aluminate based pigments are now used in exit signs, pathway marking, and other safety related signage. 8 Reasons you'll rejoice when we hit $8 a gallon gasoline

We all know the stuff's poison, yet we're as dependent on it as our air and water supplies -- which, of course, is what oil is poisoning.Shouldn't we be technologically advanced enough here in the 21st Century to quit siphoning off the pus of the Earth? Regardless whether you believe global warming is threatening the planet's future, you must admit crude is passé. Americans should be celebrating rather than shuddering over the arrival of $4-a-gallon gasoline. We lived on cheap gas too long, failed to innovate and now face the consequences of competing for a finite resource amid fast-expanding global demand.A further price rise as in Europe to $8 a gallon -- or $200 and more to fill a large SUV's tank -- would be a catalyst for economic, political and social change of profound national and global impact. We could face an economic squeeze, but it would be the pain before the gain.The U.S. economy absorbed a tripling in gas prices in the last six years without falling into recession, at least through March. An antidote to sprawlThe recent housing boom sparked further development of antiseptic, strip-mall communities in distant outlying areas. Making 100-mile-plus roundtrip commutes costlier will spur construction of more space-efficient housing closer to city centers, including cluster developments to accommodate the millions of baby boomers who will no longer need their big empty-nest suburban homes.Sure, there's plenty of land left to develop across our fruited plains, but building more housing around city and town centers will enhance the sense of community lacking in cookie-cutter developments slapped up in the hinterlands. 7. Restoration of financial disciplineFar too many Americans live beyond their means and nowhere is that more apparent than with our car payments. Enabled by eager lenders, many middle-income families carry two monthly payments of $400 or more on $20,000-plus vehicles that consume upwards of $15,000 of their annual take-home pay factoring in insurance, maintenance and gas.The sting of forking over $100 per fill-up would force all of us to look hard at how much of our precious income we blow on a transport vehicle that sits idle most of the time, and spur demand for the less-costly and more fuel-efficient small sedans and hatchbacks that Europeans have been driving for decades. 8. Easing global tensionsUnfortunately, we human beings aren't so far evolved that we won't resort to annihilating each other over energy resources. The existence of weapons of mass destruction aside, the present Iraq War could be the first of many sparked by competition for oil supplies.Steep prices will not only chill demand in the U.S., they will more importantly slow China and India's headlong rush to make the same mistakes we did in rapidly industrializing -- like selling $2,500 Tata cars to countless millions of Indians with little concern for the environmental consequences. If we succeed in developing viable energy alternatives, they could be a key export in helping us improve our balance of trade with consumer-goods producers. Additional considerationsWeaning ourselves off crude will hopefully be the crowning achievement that marks the progress of humankind in the 21st Century. With it may come development of oil-free products to replace the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, fertilizers and pesticides that now consume 16% of the world's crude-oil output and are likely culprits in fast-rising cancer rates.By its very definition, oil is crude. It's time we develop more refined energy sources and that will not happen without a cost-driven shift in demand.
