What is the cause of gravity?

A friend of mine MUSAB said that  two bodies attract each other because the electrons and protons of both their atoms attract each other, however, I don't think this is the case, I have heard from some where else that it is due to distortion in space time created by a mass and geodesics are formed and they bend towards the center of the mass due to which every other body which comes in its gravitational field tends to move towards its center and all that stuff I have studied in detail. So who is right? If he is wrong, then please also specify where is he wrong, I think that individual atoms can not attract each other because of charge because an atom, as a whole, is a neutral particle. Thanks in advance.

RAM error cause / fix

I've started getting system service exceptions, and have linked the cause to the RAM, which has shown around 10 errors when tested, mainly that certain pairs do not store data accurately, on at least one of the sticks. I need to ascertain the cause of these errors to see if the warranty covers it. Would it be possible to get or write a program to keep writing to the defective locations, to prevent important applications using the space?

System interrupts causing problems?

I have a Windows 8.1 laptop with Intel i7, 8gb memory, 750gb hdd, and 2gb Nvidia video card that is about 3 years old. I've never had any problems until recently. When I play audio or video, there is a lag in the sound and everything freezes for less than a second. It does this anytime, even when just browsing the internet. I watched the performance monitor in the cpu section and there are usage spikes in 3 of the 8 cpu usage graphs when it lags. I think it comes from system interrupts, but I don't know what it means. I tried turning off audio enhancements, as some suggested for this problem, but it did not change anything. I have not made any recent changes to my laptop, so I don't know why this has just started. Any suggestions?

Unpublished 'ibles.

So after having been off for a long time and finally having pinpointed the neighbours wifi router, sans cantenna (it helped signal but because there's cars passing by made it cut out far easier) I've been on and digging around, immediately I wrote and published a couple of 'ibles I already had made, now I'm rooting around in my unpublished 'ibles... I have 39 of them, many are confusing and worrying, in various stages of writing and the answers to a lot of the burning questions, subjects are wildly varied and questionable at best, there's one that's even ready to publish, however I'm not sure about it, nothing wrong it's just I'll have to listen to a plethora of comments that will annoy me in extremis, points to anyone who guesses it... Anyway... how about you lot? Many unpublished 'ibles, are many ever likely to be publishable?

Why does electricity cause sparks?

Hi everyone! Why does electricity cause sparks? I have two scenarios in my mind, and i hope someone can provide me good answers. 1) I have seen on a lot of occasions, for instance the main transformers near my home, the wires sometimes keep sparking near the area where the wires are joined to it. Why does it spark? What is actually happening? And i do know that it might be caused by an overload or a short-circuit or stuff, i am not talking about what caused the sparking, but what is happening when one occurs. Why not just burst into flames, or heat red hot like a metal filament or something? 2) I have also observed sparks when, lets say i suddenly pull out the plug from the socket with the switch still ON, or sometimes even when i turn ON/OFF a switch driving a load. Why does this occur?

LEDs with short leads causing problems? Answered

So for Christmas i got a bunch of these leds from amazon and im making and led cube with them. the problem is the leads are so short i use copper wire to give some space for each LED. so for instance its    [Cathode]-----copper wire-----[Cathode]     . But as i solder one end of the copper to one cathode, it will melt the connection at the other end causing me to re-solder once it cools, sometimes it total luck that it stays.  So if you can understand this, does anyone have a more productive way to make this cube?  (and please dont say get LEDs with longer leads)

Auto zoom causes problems in upload?

When you implemented the new upload tool, I couldn't use it in Chrome on a Windows 7 laptop.  You drag and drop the file to a location on the page and then click upload. However, the upload button was off-screen and I couldn't scroll to it. Weird! I got around the problem by using another browser for a while.  Recently, I discovered that the zoom setting was over 100%!  I hadn't zoomed in…. By setting it back to 100%, I could access the upload button. Why do the create pages change the zoom setting on on you? Why can't you scroll to the button in Chrome?

Quotation marks cause problems in titles

Hello all, I've hit a bit of a problem with my latest instructable: https://www.instructables.com/id/Lady-Gaga-2/ You may note that the title shown in the URL is Lady-Gaga-2.  The original title I used was:  Lady Gaga "You and I" Hat and Robot Arm.  When I went to publish, everything including the first " and beyond was deleted. I changed it, moving the "You and I" to the end of the title.  It worked right for a while, but it seems to have vanished again. Is this an actual bug, or should I just avoid using quotation marks in titles? Incidentally, as of 11:04 this morning, this instructable is still stuck in the filters.  Can someone unstick it? Thanks for all your good works!

Attempts to print cause browser crash

I'm hoping that *somebody* here can help me. I've been trying to print out a couple of instructables (all the steps in one file), but my browser crashes just about every time I try.If I'm *lucky*, I'll get one file printed successfully before it crashes on the second instructable -- but usually the first attempt will crash the browser. It doesn't crash my system, just the browser itself. The latest message is:"Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the incovenience".Error Signature:AppName: iexplore.exeModVer: 7.0.6000.16640AppVer: 7.0.6000.16640Offset: 001cd123ModName: mshtml.dllThis particular error is from Internet Explorer, but I've had a similar error producing the same effect from Firefox on the same system (at home).I've also had the same error on Internet Explorer on a different computer (at work).I've had the same result with instructables bookmarked on my Firefox system, instructables bookmarked on del.icio.us, as well as instructables randomly loaded from the website itself. At home I've been trying to print to the PDF Creator software program, as I don't own a printer. At work, I've tried to both print directly to the printer, as well as printing to Adobe Acrobat 8 in an attempt to create a PDF file.I get the same errors, no matter which printing method I use.All attempts to print to PDF Creator and Adobe Acrobat 8 from other web sites have worked fine -- and I've gotten instructables to print to both of those software programs once or twice. Just it's only maybe 1 attempt out of 20.Admin - if more detailed error reports would be helpful, please contact me at the address on my account.

Pan pastel weirdness - any ideas on causes? Answered

These pastels were relatively smooth - aside from use - two years ago. They have never been exposed to moisture other than that in the air.  They have been in a heated dry place in a covered box.  I opened them for the first time in two years today and found some 'erupting' with white stuff.  I'm guessing crystals  of some sort... or maybe a very strange mold. Has anyone else had this happen or know what causes it?

How to determine which component will cause a bottleneck?

I have a system with a Pentium 4 at 2.4 Ghz, and I'm assuming that the P4 would be the component to cause a bottleneck.  I've maxed out the RAM at 2 GiB (it's DDR 533 Mhz I believe). Anyways, I'm trying to get it to do some (moderate) 3D gaming.  So I'm wondering, if I were to buy an AGP ATI graphics card, would a card with only 120 stream processors result in a bottleneck with the GPU instead of the CPU?  Or is the difference between 120 and 320 stream processors negligible (assuming clock speeds and VRAM are equal)?  I'm not expecting to run Crysis on this rig, but I'd like it to be able to handle most modern games on low settings at least.  Any input is appreciated.

What causes clumping of fine powder in a liquid? Answered

I make omelettes fairly often.  If the egg yolks are a little on the pale side, I'll add a bit of turmeric - a bright yellow finely powdered spice. Not enough to taste, but enough to add a bit of colour. I've noticed that if I add the turmeric before I beat the eggs (so it drops on the egg-white), the powder will clump together and stay as blobs.   If I beat the eggs first (with the yolk mixed in) it will spread over the surface and be much easier to combine. If I use paprika, it will clump whether it's added before or after I've beaten the eggs. I'm guessing this something to do with electric charge on the surface of the particles, but can someone enlighten me further.

Previewing a new Forum topic causes it to be published?

Earlier this morning, I was editing a new Forum topic ("Ionizing vs. non-ionizing radiation, units, and safety" in Physics). I hit the [Preview] button to check whether I had messed anything up. I had (missed out one of the ending quotes for a boldface bit), so I clicked on "step 1: Edit" to go back and fix it. I went through the Preview -> Publish steps again. and thought I was done.Much to my surprise, there were two copies of my topic posted! The first was the version I had previewed (above), with the mistake. The second was my final version where I actually hit the [Publish] button. I've deleted the first, of course, to avoid confusion.Should the Preview action actually generate a published entity?

Throat Problems - Scope Results - cause? - Diagnosis

Some of you have probably seen my other 2 OLD forum topics, but if you haven't, I will explain it to you here. I have been having BAD throat problems for a few months now. Since I was about 9 I had food getting stuck in my throat. So one day, I was eating lunch, and food got stuck, slid down my throat and into my wind pipe. I started choking and couldn't breath. After that dramatic incident, I noticed a new symptom. I physically could not swallow. And on top of that I had an old symptom: heartburn. So I go to a doctor. He says I would have to get a scope.        So THIS is where the update begins. It was early September. I go in to get a scope. I wake up with the memory spam of a goldfish. So my family and I wait a while to go to the doctor for the results. So I go to my appointment where my doctor explains what is going on.                   ALL THE WAY DOWN my throat I have ulcers. Thus, around my ulcers they swell up, causing the difficulty swallowing         There are these things that MOST (not all) people have called esophills. I cannot find any info on these things so I will explain them to you instead of a link. These "esophills" are basically cells in your throat that react to allergies. They could swell up, itch, burn, etc. Well, mine swell up. The average person has about 5. I have 21.                      After explaining these things, my doctor says I have Eosinophilic Esophogitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eosinophilic_esophagitis) and says I have to get an allergy test.          Pardon my french in this paragraph....I go to see an allergist. He says to wait in the room for a few minutes until this hot girl comes in. She takes these blue pointy things and pricks me with them as liquid comes out. So she walks away, and we wait. 2 of the pricks start itching like hell. The doctor comes in, and says those two pricks are samples of corn and apples. Apples? No biggy. Corn? Damn...........why is that bad? Things that have corn that I was banned from: Soda, chips, pretzels, cereal, cereal bars, bread, and hell of a lot of other things.         So I don't eat ANYTHING with corn for about a week until the blood test results come in. About a week after the allergist appointment, he calls and says corn and apples came out negative. So I could go back to eating things with corn.        Tomorrow (10/4) I have to go get ANOTHER allergy test by taping food to my back. Hungary? Just rip the food off my back. Thanks for reading! C'ya will I go cry in a corner /sarcasm

Can flipping a circuit breaker causes a laptop to fry?

My friend is blaming me for frying his laptop because i supposedly flipped the circuit breaker... I know from a basic knowledge of electronics and electricity that when you turn the breaker off and then back on, you just cut the electricity and it is restored...so this shouldn't cause any problems for electronics... but is it possible that the power block for the laptop can't handle the sudden off and on of the current, and then short, sending more current to the laptop, causing it to "fry"?

USB devices on my PC cause 'Power surge'? Answered

I have Microsoft Windows XP sp2 running on a dell machine. Whenever I plug my camera in to get pictures off of it, the keyboard and/or mouse stop functioning and i receive an alert that says "power surge on hub port" or something similar. In order to get my keyboard and/or mouse to work again, i have to unplug my camera from the USB port and reset all ports. This just started happening today, even after I restarted. The error message in the picture below keeps coming up and closing itself in some kind of loop as I type this... Why does my camera cause other USB devices to malfunction when I plug it in the? Why does that error keep popping up every half a second? And, on top of all this, my tooth is throbbing for no apparent reason :( Help! -Nepheron

Something is causing a delay when I switch pages

When I switch pages in answers there is a 7 second delay.  I'm using Firefox 3.62 and it does this on two systems running on different providers. If I go to a question page the page comes up and I don't have control of the cursor for 7 seconds.  The only error message I've been able to see said there was a script that was not finished.  I've checked for virus and malware.  When I go back to the main questions page the same thing happens. Does instructables have a broken script?

What would cause a brushed motor to lose strength? Answered

Hi gang, My wife used her mixer to make two pounds of dough for years, but recently the motor would struggle and eventually stop.  The only way to use the mixer now is to make smaller batches of dough. I took a look under the hood, and all seems OK.  The brushes on the motor are clean and making good contact, the cooling fan moves air over the motor as it should, all the gears were well lubricated and moved freely, nothing was broken. What made the motor lose it's mojo?  Is there a way for me to make it strong again?

What might have caused the automatic filters to be triggered?

Our recently published (approximately 12 hours ago) project is neither appearing on the recent page nor showing up in searches (but is showing up as published on our page/channel).  We assume it's not a bug - and suspect we've triggered the automatic filters and thus require human review. The subject of our published project could not be more innocent (at least as far as we can tell) - making a miniature bag toss game.  Could anyone give us some insight as to what might have triggered the filter (so we can avoid triggering it in future)?  The project is here: https://www.instructables.com/id/A-Desktop-Bag-Toss-Build-it-with-Few-Tools/ We haven't found any clear information on this.  If we missed an obvious resource explaining such, apologies for our ignorance.  We are new here. Thanks & cheers!

What causes Heartleaf Philodendron leaves to not separate from their shoots?

I have several small Heartleaf Philodendrons that have been growing for a couple of years.  For the most part, they seem healthy, but oftentimes new leaves have difficulty fully unfolding from the little shoots they grow from.  The stay stuck in the outer protective leaf and don't open up, and either dry out and die or form stunted, misshapen leaves when they finally pull themselves free.  You can see this in the picture I've uploaded, which shows a stunted leaf and a leaf that has not managed to unfold itself from the shoot it grew in. Does anyone know what might cause this problem?  I admit that I don't water them as regularly as I should, but it's not all the tendrils that do this.

I'm having headaches everyday; what could be causing them?

Ever since week 2 from the start of school, I've been getting headaches... and lots of it. From headaches, day 1, and a week thereafter, the headaches happened twice daily. Now it's week 3, and the headaches seem to be subsiding... a bit... Now I only get a few headaches every other day. What can be a viable explanation to this madness? In case this helps... I've limited my drinking of CocaCola since the past few months. I've started drinking water more often. I should be taking vitamins, but I forget to do so. What more is there? Yeah, we've received a lot of homework since school, day 2. Normally, I don't take in a lot of stuff just like that, but I was forced to do so under these circumstances. Perhaps, a combination of stress and vitamin deficiency? UPDATE: Headaches are subsiding now. Just a side note: it's as if everyone got headaches at the same time as I did. Multiple people received their dosage of headaches at roughly the same period. One of them was pregnant (understandable), the rest were college freshmen. I believe we can say that the headaches originated from a bit of "shock" from entering school (our homework instance rates upped by more than 100%!)

WS2812b strip stopped working, what could be the possible cause? Answered

Hi, I'm using a 1m ws2812b (30 led/m) strip for my ambilight setup with adrilight, using an arduino mega. I cut the 1m strip into 5 smaller strips  ['data direction as per this description':  (5+5 leds in bottom) -> 5 leds at the left side -> 10 leds at the top -> 5 leds at the right side) ] and soldered them together, rechecked everything and installed it on my monitor. I'm powering it with a 5v 2a power supply and everything was working good for 3 days. Suddenly, the strip stopped responding to any data input from the arduino. Only the 6th led of the 2nd strip at the bottom lights up with 'green' colour as soon as I turn on the power adapter.  I tried using Adafruit neopixel rgb strand test as well as fastled library's sample codes but none work any longer(they were working perfectly prior to this sudden failure). It's as if the strip doesn't care that the arduino is connected. The single led (6th one as per data line & 1st one as per divided section, on the 2nd strip) works when connected to the power adapter and lights on/off as per the power adapter's state. None of the other leds work or even light up. What could be the possible problems of the sudden strip failure? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Ethernet.h causing problems with 7 segment display driver [Arduino]

Hey Instructables,  I have a really annoying issue with some Arduino code I am writing.  The code is for an ethernet controlled countdown timer.  In it's component parts the functions all work fine,  I can drive the 7 segment display fine. I can start/stop/set a count over Ethernet However as soon as I add the line  Ethernet.begin(mac, ip); in void setup()  The 7 segment display starts to show errors, specifically the first of the four digits. Even If I don't include any additional Ethernet related code in the loop, just calling the library on setup causes problems.  I'm not an especially experienced programmer so I'm really hoping someone can share a little of their wisdom here! #include #include          // needed for Arduino versions later than 0018 #include #include          // UDP library from: bjoern@cs.stanford.edu 12/30/2008 int digit1 = 11;
