Well I was burning some disks and I just started wondering if anyone knew if when you burn CD's, does the reflection from them alter in any way? Would it change if it was just audio? Just visual? Text? Anyone know? I'm really looking forward to using some of the old CD's for an art project.

I was cleaning my room and found a load of blank CD's. It made me think of all the AOL discs that my house used to get. So I got to thinking - There's a lot of power wasted on these things, right? So, my job for you, Instructables users, is to help me engineer a way to use these CD's to generate solar, wind, tidal, geothermal energy, whatever. Anything renewable. Any ideas?

Is there a cheap to make device to grab a cd place it on one pile remove a cd from another pile inject it into a standard cd tray and then signal the computer to press a button?

I have a copy of Windows Xp, but it is the CD that you can only use like 3 times or it is not supposed to work or install the OS. I would like to know how to get the data off the CD without using one of those times it can install the OS. I am Using a Mac and want to run bootcamp. How can yo get a stuck cd out of a car cd player/

Could you take a CD/DVD drive from a pc and wire it with a USB so you could use it with a notebook/ anything without a CD/DVD drive? If so, HOW?!?!? it would make a great instructable. Just sayin'...

How do I copy my cassette's to CD? I have one car that only has a CD player and I would like to listed to my cassette language learning tape, but can't until I can figure out how to transfer them. I have several CDs that we play often, and they are beginning to hesitate, and/skip.  the only cloth I have now is glasses cleaner.  I wipped one several times, one way, and that helped.  Would wipping it more help? Would it be best to get a special cleaninng cloth, and liquid cleaner?

Hi, i have a desktop cd rom drive 52x max, i want it to connect to my laptop using IDE to USB cable. I have the cable, I tried to connect it but it's not working i think it's because it needs more power. on cd rom drive its writtenDC 5V -------------1 ADC 12V -----------1.5AI know i can buy the power cable, but this time i would like to do it myself with battries... At the back of the cd rom drive it have 4pins for the power, but i don't know how to connect the battery with the pins? what voltage should i use? n which pins?thanks

I need help with a project I am working on. I need A list of parts and a simple diagram for a CDS circuit cell that will turn on a LED(s) when there is no light. It is a circuit that will be powered by a 9 volt battery, and will power 2 5mm LEDs. If you can help me, I will give you credit in the instructable.

What do i do with olds cds and dvds?

I want the CDS cell to turn on the LED when there is no light, and turn it off when there is. I need a diagram and parts list, i am using a 9 volt battery. Whoever gives the best answer will get credit in an upcoming instructable.

I would like to upcycle the clear plastic  (polycarbonate) in CDs and DVDs to Make all sort of things like smartphone supports, boxes, structres, and so on. I have already bent, cut, polish the plastic by I haven't found a satisfactory way to remove the metalic layer. Thaks to you all.

My girlfriend has had a few requests to have the photos she takes (Currently edits everything herself and sends to users via dropbox) in a cd format. Now, she claims that the file sizes are too large for a cd to hold, but there has to be a way to do this. I was thinking loading everything onto a SD card or putting a few images onto 1 cd. Is there any software that would hold approximately 10-25 pictures and not be a lesser quality product than what she is currently doing? (She really needs the product she hands over to be good-great quality, she only takes customers via referals.) She has professional camera equipment, a samsung galaxy s 5 and a laptop to edit. Can a regular CD player be modified to play like a DJ turntable? E.G. disable the motor that spins the CD and figure out how to have the laser track the cd like a record player tone arm.  then be able to manually spin the disc and maybe even "scratch" while audio is produced.

Can i take 2 cd (CD and or DVD) burners, gut them out and take the diodes that burn the data on the cd and use it to make different art and design on wood? if so, would a single one work or do i have to mount multiple ones to get it to burn wood? and is there any difference in the diodes srength in a CD and DVD burner? and im not gonna go crazy with it and do "bad" stuff.

I am pretty sure there was an instructable on how to actually "burn" an image or design straight onto a cd using a cdrom, but i cant find it now. what would happen is you would put in a blank cd into your computer andetch an image right onto the cd, but i cantfind it. if anyone knows where it is, please tell me. or the maker of the instructable. thanks!!

My sonic-cd got cracked somehow but i still want to play. i have made 3 discs but none of them work, do i need to burn the ISO file or extract the ISO file and then burn it?

Read on the internet, a process that makes old Ni-Cd batteries good again. They say they can resurect old batteries that do not hold a charge. Is this possible? How is it done? Cheers for any help

So I want to try to turn a old sony cd diskman circa 1999 into a turn table for cds. My idea here is to have it play but I can stop the disk with my finger and hopefully get a skipping effect, the other idea is to be able to freely move the laser eye and have it still play while doing it. I already have it soldered up so that it can play without the case and have a 9 volt connected to it, but thats about it. Anyone have any idea on how this could be? 

There are three motors in a CD or DVD Rom unit. Does anyone know the operating voltage of each motor? Thanks

I recently found an old AA powered Portable CD player. Upon dismantling it, I found 6 wires, since which I have tested and discovered their function. My question to you all is, would there be any danger to hooking up a larger battery to the two wires that spin the CD? I tried briefly using a 9 Volt, and the results were simply amazing. I have a hack or two that I could really use this for, and I wanted the opinions of people here to see if there was any danger to doing this.

hey everyone this is my first post(i never realized there was a forum untill now). Heres the idea: ive got a bag of computer parts and among them is an old cd drive. its got a volume control and a headphone jack built into it. my idea is to put a rechargeable battery on it, turning it into the nerdiest walkman in history. my knowledge of computers is only slightly above basic so i was wondering how i can get it to play and switch to different songs. can i do this by making connections on the ribbon cable port, or is this whole project totally absurd?

My Gateway laptop cd drive,  model  HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC_4243N, has been working perfectly fine till about a month ago when I realised it was not playing my CDs.  It will play DVDs so I know it's working, Device Manager reports that it is working properly and the troubleshooting process does not cover my scenario ( apparently the problem is usually the other way around).  I've tried updating driver but that says I have the most recent driver.  Scans don't show anything.  The only thing that I had done which might relate was that I had installed Bluetooth on my laptop but it kept giving me an error message re audio wireless which would not load.  I ignored it at first but when I started having trouble with my CD drive I uninstalled it, unfortunately that didn't help.

I placed a cd disc in the cd player in my 2004 Chevy Silverado, and when I pushed the eject button, I only received a clicking noise and a check cd message. I have not been able to retrieve the cd. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
