I found that i use older and slower computers more than i do my desktop modded to be fast, it's the fastest computer in my house! still for some reason i keep using an overheating, amd 366 laptop to play dos games and a pentium 4 laptop with 256mb of ram, instead of my desktop with a celeron D 3.23ghz (overclocked of course, how else?) and 1gb of ram. why? lol.

Can my PC run Call Of Duty Black Ops well? Answered

This question is not about this game in particular but if my PC could run it smoothly without the graphics looking like crap. My PC is a Toshiba Satellite M45-S165. It has a 1.5 GHz single core Intel Celeron M CPU. I have no idea what graphics card it has. Remember this computer is about 5 years old. I'm getting tired of the crappy graphics on the Wii and dont want to buy an Xbox 360 or PS3.

How can I overclock my compaq?

SO I have a compaq prescario c700 laptop PC. It has an Intel celeron processor running @ 1.7ghz, this is a little slow for me so I tried to overclock it via fsb configuration software. (like setfsb) The only problem is I cannot find a program that supports my PLL (or clock generator) My PLL is a slg8sp512t, I have tried getting a program that supports a similar PLL but they all just bluescreen my computer. I'm doing this on AC popwer so the Intel speedstep function should be turned off. So my question Is does anybody know-of/have a program that supports this PLL?

PC refuses to install any OS

I have a PC that I need to get operational again after an accident with some overclocking software (either ClockGen or setFSB). The actual hardware seems to be working, and will install several different versions of XP as far as the first reboot, on which it will BSOD and restart the install in a loop. I have also tried installing Ubuntu from a USB drive, which I know works, and the computer does not accept it as bootable. The system has been unplugged with the BIOS battery out for a couple of months, so the BIOS is not causing it. It is running with minimal hardware, as follows: Intel Celeron D @ about 2.5GHz Replacement 20Gb IDE HDD, or original 150Gb (both do the same thing) on IDE1 CD/DVD drive on master of IDE2 I know it's pretty much obsolete, that's why I need it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I am trying to build a Craftsman tool case portabale computer and I need to know how to figure what size PSU to use?

I am using a MU440EX Motherboard from year 2000. I know it is an old board but it has never been opened until today and I know that because I cut the factory seal on it. It says the Pentium 11 processor is supporting a host bus frequency of 66 MHz. The supported Pentium 11 processor have clock speeds of 233 MHz, 266 MHz, 300z, and 366MHz. Intel Celeron Processor supporting bus speed frequency of 66 MHz. The supported Celeron Processor has a clock speed of 266 MHz. As you might already know that it supports SDRAM DIMM * 168 Pin 3.3V DIMMs with gold plated contacts *  66MHz  4- clock unbuffered SDRAM *  non-ECC (64-BIT) memory *  Serial presence detect (SPD) or non-SPD memory *  8 MB, 16 MB, 32MB, 64MB, and 128 MB modules First question- I have a Pentium Processor so will it work without being a Pentium 11 ? I do have a 233 MHz and a 266MHz and I think I have a 300MHz INTEL Pentium 11 Processors so can I put any one of the in it and then set the BIOS for the speed Processor? Would any of them work as long as the BIOS are set to the correct one? Second question is how do I know what WATTAGE of PSU should I use with this system? I have a 230W system with a on/off switch already hooked in to it from the factory that I am thinking of using but I do have a big supply of all different wattage boxes that I can use if it will not hurt it. I don't know how high I can take it. I am getting pic's so I can try and make an Instructable for the first time to when it is done so I can see what all of you think about it. I might be replying back again later when I get to the BIOS part unless I get it done on my own. Cross your fingers for me I will need all the luck I can get being my first time and all. Please answer back with the cold hearted truth so if I do make a mistake that will be the only way I will know it. Thanks to you all GREETINGS TO ALL YOUR HOLADAYS

How do I measure pressure inside computer case

. I've setup a home file server and would like to be able to maintain positive pressure in the case to keep dirt out (two dogs in the house). I've cut some filters to fit the fans blowing into the case (front, rear, and side) and installed a "PCI slot" exhaust fan (it and the PSU are the only exhausts). All these are connected to a four-channel controller.. Using the handy-dandy strip-of-paper-in-front-of-a-case-opening method, case pressure is real close to being equal to ambient with all intake fans on high and the exhaust fan on low (700W PSU has two fans that seem to work very well). Even under full-load, BIOS/SpeedFan says the 1.8 GHz Celeron temp stays below 140 degF under full load and idles in the mid-to-high 90s. HDD temps (2x400GB RAID 1 + spare and 40GB boot) stay below 105, except when formatting when they might rise to 110. . I have some clear tubing, so I could rig up a manometer, but don't feel comfortable hooking up a water hose to my computer. Any ideas on a cheap-and-easy way to measure DeltaP (I'm guessing 0-5 inWC would work) without liquids? Could a automotive Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (I think they have a range close to 0-30 inWC) be adapted?. Someone point me in the right direction and I'll post an Instructable when I figure it out.

Do I have a major hardware problem or is it something much less?

Gateway Windows XP Home Edition Model # MF ATXSTL KTH 300SE LTD Ship Date- 4/8/02 Hard drive- Western Digital 20GB 5400RPM 128MB 133/100/66 - MHz 64Bit 4-Clock 16X8SDRAM DIMM Modems- Gateway V.92 PCI Soft Modem R1 Motherboard- INTEL (Kitty Hawk 1.5) 1.2GHz Celeron R1 My problem is that when I plug it in it automaticly powers up but it will not boot up.My first brain buster was that it was the video card, no such luck that I know of I have no way of checking it, but it did not change anything. So I left it out and then pulled the RAMM out and still it will not send anything to the monitor. So from there I check the #'s on the RAMM through Gateway and the last number on the stick was of by 1 number, I don't know if that makes a differance or not, I still need to find that out too. Gateway will not help in any way because it has no warrenty on it.That is as far as I got as far as the haRDWARE. As Soon as I plug it in it beeps three times and thats it.The fan on the CPU and the PSU both run from the time I plug it in. I did try pressing and holding the start button for about 10 to 15 seconds and it went out for about a 1/2 second and came back on but did not stop the pc. At this point I am at a lost. I don't know what else to try except the PSU maybe out or something. If the pc was not broke would it boot up with no RAMM or video card in it. It calls for 128MB so do I need to get two 128's and put in it to take it to 256 or can I two 256's in it to take it to 512 or is that to much? Is there a way I can test the video card to see if it is any good? Is it true that 3 beeps is code for RAMM problems? I don't know what else to try so can anyone please help me with as much as you can. I cannot afford to dump a bunch of money into it. I do have a lot of extra parts from IBM's. Would any of those parts work in a differant brand of computers? I have box's of brand new RAMM's,CPU's,CD-DVDs, Drives,Heat sinks,PSU's,all differant sizes of fans, just many many parts from IBM's. Will any of these parts work in anything other than IBM's.I hope this is enough information because its all I can think of. I think you for any help you can give me.

Question by madrasi    |  last reply

Ouch, bad week for me.

This week pretty much sucks so far. To fill everybody in, I bought myself a nice little gift for my birthday, a 100 inch projector TV. I'm still working on the setup, even though my birthday was in July. Things take time, unfortunately. I was planning on hooking up my desktop PC to the projector, to show pictures and whatnot, it'll be my DVD player too. I have an ATI remote wonder that'll work perfect for it. I already have it integrated into the surround sound, so all I had to do is get a 25 foot VGA cable to run from the PC to the projector. Or so I thought, until it came across my mind that I wouldn't be able to use my desktops monitor. I thought I would just make a solid state switch, but unfortunately, a VGA cable has 15 pins - I don't think they make a dual throw 15 pole switch. So the backup plan was to get a second video card, to use in conjunction with the onboard graphics to do dual monitors. I can make a simple app, and use one of the programmable buttons on the remote to switch which is the primary display. So I went shopping, and I asked a friend what he thought of this one I wanted to buy. How convenient, that he just happened to get a new one, and he would sell me his old one, which just happened to be PCIE x16, for $50.. which is less than what I was looking at, and triple the quality. I buy it, and wait 2 days from it to go from San Fransisco to my house, in central MA. I install it, it works! Yay! I install the drivers, go out for a little bit, come back... dead computer. The thing was a goner, the PS blew, and took the motherboard with it. So I called up compaq... 20 days out of warantee. Great! At that point, I thought it was just the PS. It's 300 watts, running 2 hard drives, 2 CD drives, a 3.3ghz Celeron, and an ATI x1600 graphics card. So I go shopping, pick up a 500 watt one. Come home and install it... same shit. So I knew the motherboard was blown. I look it up, a new motherboard is $200. That's how much I paid for the damn computer! So it's ebay time, I find and win the same model for $250. So yeah, so far, the cost of this week is $350. $100 from the PS. So I put the computer back together, put it on the desk. I wake up the next morning to guess what? Look at the first picture. That's right, the glass desk shattered. The desktop was on the other side, thank god, but guess what got screwed up in that nice, conveniently timed breakage? - The new PS (I exchanged it, but I had to drive an hour to Circuit City) - One hard drive, 2 weeks old. - $90 - Old school soldering iron - costed me $80 back in the day. - A whole stack of DVD-RWs - $30 - A stock of CD-Rs - $15 - A pressure gauge from my Pneumatic cannon instructable - $10 - A bunch of misc electronic parts - $20 - My damn desk! - $120 So far, $715 total. Murphy's law in action right there.
