Checking Theories

In this topic, place your theories of some chemistry experiments in the comments section, starting with this one. To start with, Fe + 2H2O --> FeO2 + 2H...Place iron fillings to fill 1/3 of a water bottle. Fill the rest with water, and place a balloon on top. Wait X days/weeks/months. The water reacts with the iron to extract the oxygen from the water, leaving only hydrogen, and rust in the products. In the reactants, the hydrogen was bonded to the oxygen. Will someone tell me if this works? The energy that bonds this is the potential energy in the water.

Checking electric on an oven

I have a problem with my oven which is tripping the fuses. It has a grill, top and bottom heating. I have diconnected each of the elements and think I have isolated it to one of the elements. I have removed that element and find, I can get a continuity reading across the two in put terminals, which I guess just means it is intact. However, I get a low reading across the earth and one terminal. Can anyone tell me if that is what I should expect? It's so annoying as I have had the oven almost 5 years (new with the new apartment) and this is the first time I have tried to use it. Previously I just used my combi microwave. Thanks for any advice.

Guns To Check Out

Cool guns to check out: The Jamalam's battle rifle. Why should I? Do you want a k'nex gun that has an awesome hold, great distance, cool magazine, and working bolt? Well if you do, The Jamalam's assault rifle is perfect. Another one, is the SR-V1 by killer-k. This gun has intricate slingshot design, and very powerful range. This is definitely recommended in a k'nex battle along with all the others. I mean come on! It looks like a sniper (duh!), feels like a sniper and shoots like one too! Also, another one is Gorkem's sniper rifle. It is a awesome, sturdy, powerful choice. It is an awesome sniper. I love it, and it is filled with cool features like, a great stock, a ridiculously cool barrel, and an awesome loading system. A cool one is the fn-scar k'nex gun. It has good ratings, a cool gun, a nice system, and overall good and reliable. Last but not least everyone please watch my crome eagle rifle slideshow and say to post or not. Just type in: Crome Eagle k'nex gun slide show. I give credits to all of the guns I mentioned and am a big fan of them, well... bye!

How to check, if the IR sensor (from remote control) is working ???

Hi ... I would like to ask, how I could check, if the receiver (for remote control) is working. I bought on Ebay a used SCART FREEVIEW adapter ... but unfortunately it doesn't work (properly). I'm able to power it up, to see a picture = big logo IKASU. And at the beginning a small pop up menu appears and ask me, if it should start to check for channels. After few seconds it disappears and that's it ... I can't do anything else. There is just the logo :( I check the cables, of the receiver - there are fine, not broken. The RC seems to send signals as well (checked with camera if the IR led lights up). Do you know, how I could check, if the IR receiver works ??? There are 3 pins going out, from the receiver.

LED Strip running very hot, so hot the two way tape came undone.

Hi just installed Led strips under my kitchen cabinets only to find they came undone due to the heat they produced. They are 12V LED Strips hooked to a 12 volt 2.5 amp transformer. I took a reading and the volts going to the LED Strip is 12V. Positive is connected to (Red wire) and Negative to the Black. What am I doing wrong or are these defective? How can I test them to see if they are defective assuming I connected them correctly?

Computer problem: Restore points: gone. Some functionality: gone. Quarantine folder: nothing special. What's wrong? Answered

Some background: OS: XPMachine: Gateway pc - dual processorscondition caused by: Running of Clam-Win Virus checker in Quarantine mode. After the checker finished, I was unable to get to any programs nor able to run anything (including START - RESTART), etc. The mouse worked. The Google side bar was gone. Finally, a 3 finger salute (ctl alt del) shut down the machine. booted to SAFE MODE and found NO restore points. .booted to normal admin and the Sidebar came back. Several of my shortcuts worked at this point(rechecked the restore points, they were definitely gone)Clam-win has no "restore or unquarantine" program of it's own, at least, I couldn't find one....In the Quarantine folder, it appears as though only junk from an unused signon was removed....I am pulling out my hair here, trying to restore full functionality.....(I can't update FireFox when it asks to). Unless there is NO other way, can anyone tell me where to go from here (before I use the SYSTEM RESTORE disk that came with the machine, 3-4 years ago). I would appreciate anything helpful at this point. PS: the image below is not from my scan. It is from an old scan I had saved....when the current scan finished, I had NO functionality at all, and could not get a screen shot... Still, it shows what Clam-Win looks like...

Batch check the integrity of AutoCAD? Answered

We need a way to batch check the integrity of a lot of AutoCAD files and need suggestions or recommendations.  These files have been recovered from a raw data image so many of them are corrupt and will not open.  The option to move any undamaged files would be extra beneficial. The only program I have been able to find is one called SmartPurger but it does not work as AutoCAD will popup with error messages on corrupted files and stall the process.  There is an option in SmartPurger to auto accept the popups but it does not seem to actually work.  Been Googling for a few hours and it looks like it somehow may be possible with LISP or Script programming but I've got zero experience with these things. Thanks!

K'NEX gun quality check

Hello k'nex gunners! Jamalam here, and I have come up with a quality check for k'nex guns to make sure they are good enough for posting. You don't have to follow these rules, they are just suggestions (except for the NO TINY GUNS WITH BLOCK TRIGGAHS! part :P)1. looksa.Well proportioned /5b.Filled in properly /5c.Innards fit well in /52. Performancea.Range - Every 20 ft is worth 1, 200 ft plus is 20, taken with 3 64# r.b.s. do not do this for mgs/ semi autos, see step 3.5 /20b.Ease of reload /5c.Trigger functionality (block trigger =1) /5d.Comfort /153.Ability to pierce:(highest result scores, taken with 3 64# rbs, do not do for mgs/semi autos etc.)Paper =1 Cardboard = 2 Cans = 3 2 cardboard sheets = 4 Plywood/walls = 5 /53.5.Semi auto, mg, and other unpowerful gun types(do not do for other gun types /25Every 2 ft is worth a point4.Weight - every 100 grams is worth a point, until it gets to 1600, then you start going down /155. Reception from 5 other k'nexers - ask 5 other k'nexers to rate your gun out of 20, then work out the average (rounding up) (ie. 18+17+17+16+16 = 84, 84/5 is 16.8 ->17) /20Now, add up the points and that is the rating percentage of your gun!eg. Storm 223 = 61 + up to 20 rating average. These are just my ideas, create your own if you dont like them!Jamalam

Can you check this design? Answered

On Aug 26 I posted an ask about a design of a new type of motor.  I received some good advices. Redesigned 02/10/12 The previous design had a major flaw, that went unnoticed at first but it became clear as I went into the construction of the prototype: the thermal barrier would be totally useless, because the steam produced in the boiler necessarily have to go through liquid water to make its way into the compression chamber. This would have two disabling consequences: 1) the vapor would cool quickly, 2) the water would heat up quickly, too. Since any heat engine operation is based on temperature differences, this failure is vital. The new design does not have that problem. The water falls directly into the hot boiler, a small amount at a time, with the piston in the upper dead point, or below (note that my drawing is reversed with respect to what would be a conventional combustion engine). The water is kept cold by being stored in a separate reservoir, attached to the motor body only by the inlet and outlet pipes. Water injection is performed by momentarily opening a valve at the appropriate time. Since the interior of the water reservoir accumulates pressure as the engine works, this pressure would be in principle the responsible to force the output water through the tap. If that's not enough, I could add a little manual compression pump to initially load the reservoir with compressed air. So once the Primus heaters worked, which were extremely useful for decades. The exact moment, quantity and duration of water injection should be adjustable during operation of the engine, to find the optimum point for these parameters. These mechanisms have not thought of yet, but they can not be too complicated. As regards the boiler, it is likely that one heated surface be insufficient to rapidly vaporize the water, since in these conditions it usually adopt a globular shape that greatly retards heat transfer (Leidenfrost effect, http://resnickscity.wordpress .com/2011/01/page/3 /, http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efecto_Leidenfrost, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidenfrost_effect). I think that could be solved relatively easily by a double bottom to the boiler, in order to "force" the water into laminar contact with the hot surface. If this is insufficient, it would still be possible to inject the water by pressure between two heated surfaces. I have to also investigate the possibility of to make "super hydrophilic" the surface of the boiler. Regarding the compression chamber, this design makes it much longer, thus establishing a better differentiation between the bottom hot and top cold. But the main novelty is that the displacer stops acting on a small amount of water to turn acting, as in the Stirling engine, on the entire volume of the steam in the compression chamber. By forcing the steam to move towards the cold zone it produces its condensation, thereby changing the pressure by decompression, and so completing the cycle of the engine. The condensation water adheres to the cold walls of the chamber, then it slides down by gravity, and is intercepted midway by the retaining ring, which leads it back to the water reservoir through a single action valve, spring driven. I guess that to pass the water to the reservoir will be enough the vapor pressure that occurs in each cycle. The accompanying drawings are quite precarious, but only pretend to give a general idea of the design.

I'm just wondering if every single Instructable is viewed by one of the editors, or an algorith/program chooses the Featured Intsructables or both? So when an Instructable gets featured we get an e-mail that "one of our editors thought that you are awesome", so I think that editors are choosing them, but do they check all recent Instructables? Spell check and next step button

Two points i've seen: The spell check does not recognize "instructables" as a real word, despite it being used in almost every instructable. It also appears to be having some issues with contractions such as "i've" instead of  "I have". Secondly, the "next step" button is often hidden behind the box with the facebook, embed, flag, etc. in it when there is only a small amount of text on the step. While writing this, another problem appeared in the spell check, as shown in the attached image.

Robot or laser to check on buried pipes? Answered

I am looking for a small robot or device that can walk through (new) 8" PVC pipe and verify that the pipe is round. That is, pipe that has already been buried. The device would start at one manhole, and walk to the next manhole, recording the slope, distance and, as mentioned, circular-ness of the pipe. Max range required is 120 metres. D oes not necessarily require video, but some sort of info recording that can be read once it appears at its destination manhole. Thanks ...jim

Minor flood - Check your overflows ! ! !

Just had a minor disaster here - Water dribbling through from the roof into the airing cupboard because the float valve on the hot water tank had stuck and the overflow pipe to the outside was blocked.  Rapid turning on of hot tap and leaning suicidally out of the window with a length of stiff copper wire to unblock the pipe averted a worse situation. The overflow appeared to be blocked with mud, and this is not the first time it happened.  Some years ago this happened in daylight and I could see the pipe was also full of mud and small pieces of stick.  I suspect that some insect - possibly a bee - had been nesting there.  Order of the day tomorrow is to put a one-way flap type arrangement over the overflow to stop it happening again. But this has also reminded me it's time to make some safer accommodation for bees, ladybirds etc for overwintering.  I'll be knocking up something like THIS tomorrow and maybe they'll leave my plumbing alone!
