I am trying to find websites that sell them, and buy it from them. Then me and my supervisor will dismantle them, and learn how it works. anyone know which websites sells them? and how does it works? If there are links to learn/read more about CO2/H20 chemical sensors. Please do post them here too. Thanks all.

Electroplating chemical mishap

I figured it would be cool to quickly electroplate some stuff. Since I was lazy, I only used what I had on hand [block of zinc, vinegar, muriatic (hydrochloric) acid)]. The zinc ingot was taking too long to dissolve in the vinegar, so I added about 30 mL of hydrochloric acid. A couple hours later, I was electroplating fine. After two weeks of normal zinc chloride electroplating, the acid suddenly took on a nasty dull brown/yellow amber shade and a ton of white bubbles formed around the zinc (still in the acid). Can anyone tell me what happened?

I think I have a cool idea, will it work?

I would like to see a scientific 'domino's' event. My idea is that you have a series of containers with different chemical combinations, and they all have entry and exit areas. The containers would have a starting spot, whereby a chemical would be added to the current combination, to cause a spurt to leave the exit point, and enter the next container by the entry point, this would cause another reaction, and the chain would continue to the next container. I'm wondering if the reaction could be continued for 20 containers or more. Obviously an explosion in the chain would break the next container, so each reaction would need to be thought out to produce a spurt. What's more the positioning of each container would need to be perfectly planned according to the power of the reaction. For the container's I'm thinking something like a glass watering can, with chambers inside if needed to produce the right reaction or effect. The entry point would be the filling rea, and the spout would be the exit point. I think it's a cool idea, and I would love to know if it could work.

which chemical to deactivate microchips? Answered

Hi, I'm making a cryptex, such a thing like in the Da Vinci Code, and I'm going to make an Instructable of it later. But I'm going to hold USB-sticks in it instead of a piece of paper. That's a little more modern nowadays people lose a lot of usb sticks with secret important information so I'll use a cryptex for it. The crpytex like it was invented by Da Vinci contained a paper, which was rolled around a tube with vinegar in it. If someone decided to just smash the cryptex, the tube breaks and the vinegar would destroy the ink on the paper, making it unreadable. I don't think that works good in real but I don't think it will deactivate a usb stick either. So I want something else in the tube that DOES eat the chip. So I'll remove the outside wrapping of the USB-stick. What fluid can I use?

Is there a relatively safe alternative to vinegar and baking soda for chemical reaction volcanoes? Answered

My brother is working on a paper mache volcano experiment for school, and I figured that the instructables community has come up with something a little more creative than just vinegar and baking soda. When I say relatively safe I mean something that doesn't emit poisonous gasses or toxic waste.  Thanks for any help. Update: I'm not worried about the safety of vinegar and baking soda, I added a safety request because I was almost very stupid mixing chemicals without checking about results. I almost created a gas used to exterminate people. There is no need to lecture me on how stupid this was, I already know.

DIffusing LED with water and chemicals?

I've been thinking about the best way to diffuse LED lighting over a large space, something like a wall. Standard way of doing it would be to lightly sandpaper acrylic glass and backlight it, or edgelight. I have been thinking about filling the space between two sheets of acrylic glass with water to diffuse the light but that would need some additives, so on to the question. Q: Is there any chemical that one could mix with water to make the solution more diffuse/milky that helps the transmission of light in the fluid and also helps the diffusion? Since a fluid being backlit would change in temperature there might be some cool things one could do with that, a light panel that changes visual properties over time?

Recycling chemical containers in Tanzania

We're situated in Tanzania on a cereals farm. Needless to say - plenty of empty plastic chemical containers, creating massive headaches when it comes to destroying it. Does anyone have some pointers as to how we can do re-cycling on the farm - keeping in mind we're about 800km (500miles) due west from Dar-es-Salaam. We'd like to make some 5-7 mm sheeting out of the stuff to be used on the farm - to replace stolen sheet-metal water gates used for regulating water flow into rice paddies. Any sparks out there to light our fire? Kind regards Hendrik Neethling Kapunga Rice Project Limited (KRPL) Tanzania Mail: hjn@krplbio.com Land: +255 752 44 5572 Cell: +255 768 299 813

What, if any, chemicals does a charcoal filter remove from water?

I'm working on designing a water filter for third world countries, and I was wondering if a charcoal filter would remove chemicals in a water source.  If so, what chemicals would they be?  I know that charcoal filters kill many bacteria, etc., but that would be of little use if the bacteria were gone but toxic chemicals remained in the water.  Recommendations are appreciated.  Thanks!

My Chemical Romance Update =D

My Chemical Romance will go on a temporary break while they seek inspiration to write a new album."We can't make any more music unless we live. When we get a chance, we're going to get together and do some demos and start rolling. But we're going to take it slow,” frontman Gerard Way said. The band took two years to tour in support of their last album, 2006’s The Black Parade. {Posted from The Star}Things have been a little quiet since My Chemical Romance killed off their alter egos, The Black Parade, back in may at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden venue. However frontman Gerard Way has posted a massssiiiivvvveeee update answering all your questions about the new album, how drummer Bob Bryer is after recent wrist surgery, how guitarist Ray Toro's wedding went, what Frank Iero's been up to with his side-band, Leathermouth, as well as quashing internet rumours that he recently died in a car crash. It reads as follows:"Hey guys, Gerard here... I'm hanging out with Mikey in New Jersey, relaxing, drinking coffee, talking comics, and getting ready to take a drive down south tomorrow. I don't know what states I'm passing through but I know where I'm heading. Don't worry, I've got a the Clockwork Orange audiobook, a Dr. Pepper air-freshener, and a GPS so I don't get lost. We figured by now everyone that's a fan of the band might be wondering what we're up to, what we're planning, so I thought I'd write this letter and fill you all in."We're living, decompressing - The Black Parade took over two years to tour and six months to make so that's a lot of existing in a fictional world, and we're just extremely happy to live in a real one for a while. One thing I can let you know is that we're excited. Genuinely more excited than we have ever been to be in this band, make some new music. And we have ALL been writing new material in our own separate worlds... I started a week after I got home, buying a good rig, an old Jag, and a bunch of pedals- just searching for the next sound."Bob is recovering well from his recent wrist surgery - exceedingly well considering how risky the procedure can be. We're all really happy that when he picks up the sticks again he won't be in the intense pain he was in during the last year of touring. It's going to take him a while to rehabilitate but knowing him, he will most likely be playing the drums before the doctor says it's a good idea. He just loves playing, we all do. Franks on the road with Leathermouth and Reggie and The Full Effect so you should go see them and get spit on. I know Leathermouth doesn't have a record out yet, but Frank gave it to me in Mexico and I can easily say it's my favourite post-hardcore record of the year, so I know you will at least enjoy the songs if you don't know the words."One of the best parts of the last five months was getting to see Ray get married and all of us be a part of the wedding. It was beautiful. I'm not sure where the happy couple is right now but I am sure wherever they are, they are really enjoying it. I have never seen him happier in my life. So we made plans to get together soon and make some demos, see where our heads are at, take it slow. If explosions happen in our heads right away who knows how soon we could have a record out, we aren't in any rush but we get just as anxious as you to find out what the next 'thing' is going to be."So that about wraps it up... I'm glad I could stop by for a chat, I think I will do it more often. I'm writing more comics, writing more music, and missing my wife right now. Oh, and I heard a rumour that I died in a car accident. I didn't."[{Posted from Kerrang!}]

How to make an aquatic plant water filter?

What could this horrible chemical smell coming from the laundry room? Could it be plumbing?

I just bought this money pit of a house....I had this horrible smell coming from the laundry room. I bought new appliances and as soon as they removed the old ones the smell was gone. The new ones are hooked up and the smell seems to have returned. It's not as strong as it was before, but it's back none the less. I was hoping that the smell went with the washer but sadly it has not...I am wondering if it could be something in the drain? If it were the pipes wouldn't the entire house smell each time I used the water??

I am confused about making iron oxide?

Vinegar + Bleach + Iron = Iron Oxide? Bleach + Iron = Iron Oxide? Vinegar + Iron = Iron Oxide? 12 volt energy + Iron = Iron Oxide? 12 volt Energy + Salt + Iron = Iron Oxide? Hydrogen peroxide + 12 volt Energy + Iron = Iron Oxide? Can someone clear me out?    I am trying to make thermite but I have heard that you can make iron oxide using just bleach, however, there have been claims that bleach can actully acumule impurities which makes iron oxide impure which means that thermite will not have the same "performance".    I found a 12 volt supply in my house and i put a steel inside of a glass, i put the negative and positive but i found no evidences of iron oxide.    The only thing i accomplish was the glass full of green stuff in it.

Which chemical have I made? Answered

After my experiment which turned out to be lead oxide, I did something else. I bought a lump of Calcite, and found out it dissolves in acid. Therefore, I couldn't resist breaking off some lumps and putting those in vinegar. For at least a week, there was no significant change in the container, but after another week, all of the vinegar was gone, and no sign of the calcite lumps either. only a white and a pink residue. What I want to know is, is this Calcium? Or something else?

what are the chemicals used in fart bags? Answered

I have been looking on the net for what ingredients go into fart bags, which are these fart bombs with powder in them and a liquid inside a small packet, which you squish , then they react to produce hydrogen sulfide and then the bag pops and a rotton egg smell fills the area. i realy want to know what it is that goes into those because i want to make a 10xbigger fart bage, but i dont want to have to use the powder and liquid from real ones because the only ones i can get cost $15 for a packet of 10 which i feel is too expensive when i know there may be an alternative method.

I have a few gallons of leftover ammonium hydroxide at work. What should I do with it? Would anyone want it? Answered

I work at an engineering company and we use ammonium hydroxide for making blueprints. After a while we have to change out the bottles. I'm assuming the leftover bottles are not pure ammonium hydroxide anymore, but it is still very strong. We have about 8-10 jugs of it sitting around that we would like to get rid of. I'm not sure if it could be useful to anyone. I'm also not sure how to properly dispose of it if nobody wants it.
