Electroplating chemical mishap

I figured it would be cool to quickly electroplate some stuff. Since I was lazy, I only used what I had on hand [block of zinc, vinegar, muriatic (hydrochloric) acid)]. The zinc ingot was taking too long to dissolve in the vinegar, so I added about 30 mL of hydrochloric acid. A couple hours later, I was electroplating fine. After two weeks of normal zinc chloride electroplating, the acid suddenly took on a nasty dull brown/yellow amber shade and a ton of white bubbles formed around the zinc (still in the acid). Can anyone tell me what happened?

DIffusing LED with water and chemicals?

I've been thinking about the best way to diffuse LED lighting over a large space, something like a wall. Standard way of doing it would be to lightly sandpaper acrylic glass and backlight it, or edgelight. I have been thinking about filling the space between two sheets of acrylic glass with water to diffuse the light but that would need some additives, so on to the question. Q: Is there any chemical that one could mix with water to make the solution more diffuse/milky that helps the transmission of light in the fluid and also helps the diffusion? Since a fluid being backlit would change in temperature there might be some cool things one could do with that, a light panel that changes visual properties over time?

Recycling chemical containers in Tanzania

We're situated in Tanzania on a cereals farm. Needless to say - plenty of empty plastic chemical containers, creating massive headaches when it comes to destroying it. Does anyone have some pointers as to how we can do re-cycling on the farm - keeping in mind we're about 800km (500miles) due west from Dar-es-Salaam. We'd like to make some 5-7 mm sheeting out of the stuff to be used on the farm - to replace stolen sheet-metal water gates used for regulating water flow into rice paddies. Any sparks out there to light our fire? Kind regards Hendrik Neethling Kapunga Rice Project Limited (KRPL) Tanzania Mail: hjn@krplbio.com Land: +255 752 44 5572 Cell: +255 768 299 813

Which chemical have I made? Answered

After my experiment which turned out to be lead oxide, I did something else. I bought a lump of Calcite, and found out it dissolves in acid. Therefore, I couldn't resist breaking off some lumps and putting those in vinegar. For at least a week, there was no significant change in the container, but after another week, all of the vinegar was gone, and no sign of the calcite lumps either. only a white and a pink residue. What I want to know is, is this Calcium? Or something else?

what are the chemicals used in fart bags? Answered

I have been looking on the net for what ingredients go into fart bags, which are these fart bombs with powder in them and a liquid inside a small packet, which you squish , then they react to produce hydrogen sulfide and then the bag pops and a rotton egg smell fills the area. i realy want to know what it is that goes into those because i want to make a 10xbigger fart bage, but i dont want to have to use the powder and liquid from real ones because the only ones i can get cost $15 for a packet of 10 which i feel is too expensive when i know there may be an alternative method.

My Chemical Romance Update =D

My Chemical Romance will go on a temporary break while they seek inspiration to write a new album."We can't make any more music unless we live. When we get a chance, we're going to get together and do some demos and start rolling. But we're going to take it slow,” frontman Gerard Way said. The band took two years to tour in support of their last album, 2006’s The Black Parade. {Posted from The Star}Things have been a little quiet since My Chemical Romance killed off their alter egos, The Black Parade, back in may at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden venue. However frontman Gerard Way has posted a massssiiiivvvveeee update answering all your questions about the new album, how drummer Bob Bryer is after recent wrist surgery, how guitarist Ray Toro's wedding went, what Frank Iero's been up to with his side-band, Leathermouth, as well as quashing internet rumours that he recently died in a car crash. It reads as follows:"Hey guys, Gerard here... I'm hanging out with Mikey in New Jersey, relaxing, drinking coffee, talking comics, and getting ready to take a drive down south tomorrow. I don't know what states I'm passing through but I know where I'm heading. Don't worry, I've got a the Clockwork Orange audiobook, a Dr. Pepper air-freshener, and a GPS so I don't get lost. We figured by now everyone that's a fan of the band might be wondering what we're up to, what we're planning, so I thought I'd write this letter and fill you all in."We're living, decompressing - The Black Parade took over two years to tour and six months to make so that's a lot of existing in a fictional world, and we're just extremely happy to live in a real one for a while. One thing I can let you know is that we're excited. Genuinely more excited than we have ever been to be in this band, make some new music. And we have ALL been writing new material in our own separate worlds... I started a week after I got home, buying a good rig, an old Jag, and a bunch of pedals- just searching for the next sound."Bob is recovering well from his recent wrist surgery - exceedingly well considering how risky the procedure can be. We're all really happy that when he picks up the sticks again he won't be in the intense pain he was in during the last year of touring. It's going to take him a while to rehabilitate but knowing him, he will most likely be playing the drums before the doctor says it's a good idea. He just loves playing, we all do. Franks on the road with Leathermouth and Reggie and The Full Effect so you should go see them and get spit on. I know Leathermouth doesn't have a record out yet, but Frank gave it to me in Mexico and I can easily say it's my favourite post-hardcore record of the year, so I know you will at least enjoy the songs if you don't know the words."One of the best parts of the last five months was getting to see Ray get married and all of us be a part of the wedding. It was beautiful. I'm not sure where the happy couple is right now but I am sure wherever they are, they are really enjoying it. I have never seen him happier in my life. So we made plans to get together soon and make some demos, see where our heads are at, take it slow. If explosions happen in our heads right away who knows how soon we could have a record out, we aren't in any rush but we get just as anxious as you to find out what the next 'thing' is going to be."So that about wraps it up... I'm glad I could stop by for a chat, I think I will do it more often. I'm writing more comics, writing more music, and missing my wife right now. Oh, and I heard a rumour that I died in a car accident. I didn't."[{Posted from Kerrang!}]

What is the best way to clean chemical bottles?

I was recently given a bunch of darkroom equipment including chemical bottles like this and this. The bottles are 25 years old, and I'm sure they weren't cleaned after they were emptied. I would like to use the bottles for new chemicals, but don't want to contaminate them with whatever chemical residue remains in the bottles. Is there a good way to clean them, or should I just buy new ones? Thanks, Noah

What changes in milks taste chemically as it turns? Answered

I'm not sure what to look fo or I'd just research this myself but: I like the taste of milk that has sat out long enough to get the smoother creamier 'warm milk' taste but not so long as to actually start going off.  (twixt 15 minutes and 30 minutes depending on room temp) What I would like to know is why it changes.  I know it has something to do with the bacteria in it changing it somehow but I don't know how.  Am I tasting the bacteria or some byproduct of their breakdown of the milk?

Avoid using PVC

I see a lot of projects that use or re-use different grades of PVC pipe due to its easy use and availability. Free or cheap PVC seems to be a good material choice for those who lack the tools and skills needed for metal or wood work. I suggest that builder rethink this choice. Exposure to PVC is dangerous to your health. Fumes and dust from cutting, drilling and accidental burning or overheating PVC are known to cause cancer.A few points:PVC production is the largest use of chlorine gas in the world.Chlorine production consumes enormous amounts of energy.Chlorine production causes mercury pollution. Hazardous by-products are formed throughout the PVC lifecycle.By-products of PVC production are highly persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic.PVC is extremely difficult to recycle.PVC is one of the most environmentally hazardous consumer materials ever produced.source: http://www.healthybuilding.net/pvc/ThorntonPVCSummary.htmlDifferent grades of PVC have different melting points, flash and glass temperatures. At 70-80 Degrees C (~150 F), most grades begin to soften and degrade in performance. This should be taken into account when building projects that involve any kind of direct or indirect heat, including hot water, etc.(I've edited this post to contain more useful information)
