would a instuctable for how to make a paper mache cherry bomb be illegal and if not should I post one?

The main reason been so as I could get help off fellow members to refine the process. I would be using the resulting product for metal detecting for the recovery of buried targets in the goldfields where the ground is too hard to easily dig and on the beach if the target is deep?

Where can I buy solid wood to make a jewellery box? Specifically walnut and cherry

I want to make a jewellery box and have an idea in mind but I need two different colours to pull it off. I want to make it out of walnut and cherry as they are dark and light respecitively and I think could work quite well together. I have literally no idea where to get it from. I need it in roughly 1/2". I live in England, in Essex, but I just need to know what to look for. all I can find is places that do veneered MDF. I'm only going on the assumption that 'those really nice ones' are actually made from solid wood. To be frank, I don't even know exactly what veneered wood is. Can someone help point me in the right direction?

Cutting Board Fix? Answered

I made two cutting boards and apparently I did a bad job cutting it or the wood was too roughly cut or something, I don't know, but now they both have gaps in them. I glued one up, and the other one I didn't but could tell it was going to be the same. Is there any way to fix my goof, or if there is not, what is another project that I could use the wood for as to not completely waste it? Thanks!

Summer: the time of fresh fruit

Summer is almost here in the Northern Hemisphere, and school is out (at least where I live).  All the beautiful trees will soon be producing wonderfully sweet fruits for human and non-human passers-by to gorge themselves on.  With Pears, Apples, Plums, Peaches, Cherries and more, immeasurable numbers of fruit tree species are out there.  What are all of your favorite fruits, and what do you do with them?  Do you eat them raw and whole, in a pastry, jellied, dried, or some other way? Personally, I think Plums fresh from the tree take the cake, but all fruits are delicious.

Does anyone know of a Instructables-like plugin to post DIY type content on WordPress(.org)?

Hi there,Sometimes I have content that wouldn't be suitable or fit well within Instructables.com, and that I know won't be featured or be appreciated here. Does anyone know of an Instructables-like Plugin (or theme) for WordPress(.org) to create long format DIY or Tutorial like content? Specially when it comes to dividing into steps (and being able to easily link to those steps), being able to reorganize steps, and designed to handle a large amount of images linked to those steps. The text boxes on top of images would just be the cherry on top, but I don't expect any plugin to be able to do that.Anyway, just asking since it would be nice to know.

Tiny Talents - Learning Bar Tricks in the New York Times Magazine

What craft can I demonstrate or teach at a lunch & learn session for a 40-something aged crowd?

I volunteered to demonstrate a craft at my husband's office (insurance adjustors) early December.  Purpose is to have fun and give employees opportunity to interact.  I find people are generally creative or not, and I'd like something that can appeal to both groups.  I was thinking Chocolate Cherry Mice but question if I could accomodate a group of more than 5 with double boiler.  Office policy forbids use of office resources (photocopier, computer) for personal use.  Microwave is ok.  I would like to limit the craft to $2-$3/person as I will cover the cost of all materials and supplies.  I suspect people will not want to bring ANYTHING to the session (e.g. photos, ideas, etc)  Many thanks for ANY suggestions!

Rock Chicks!

The Barbican's Curve Gallery has an exhibit that makes me smile, even though I haven't seen it in the flesh.  Or feathers; You walk in to a narrow, high-ceilinged white room filled with exotic Zebra Finches. They have lovely little cherry-red beaks and speckled feathers in all sorts of designs. Instead of bird tables, the room is furnished with electric guitars, basses and cymbals. Which the birds play. Yes, that’s right. They bounce around from one instrument to the next, in search of seed or fun. Birds playing a rock gig. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. The zebra finch giving Slash a run for his money Photo: PA Everyone in there is smiling like they’ve just smoked a bucket of marijuana. You can’t not. Standing inches away from these birds playing Les Paul guitars by Gibson is so completely surreal – well, I’m going back this weekend. Anybody fancy recreating it in their own aviary?

Robot [Tee] Goes to the Magic Kingdom

Yes Kiteman, I know just a few weeks ago I said that I haven't visited Disney in a long long time... which, at the time was true....My parent's came up to visit and my family went to the Disney "not so scary Halloween" two weeks ago (oh, I do have a 6 year old sister :p)... They give out candy (good candy too :p), most of the rides are open and the best Disney parade Disney's ever done (according to the people that work there). In any case, I thought this phallic mickey head was hilarious - I wasn't the only one that thought so too :pIn any case, I found myself poking my head around props and such, looking at how things work rather than riding rides.... And talking with some workers... They started putting up Christmas lights weeks ago - they had a cherry picker that could reach the top of the castle...In any case, robot+mickey -- both of their heads likely have the same amount of articulation (except mickey's head sounds like a printer :p)

Square tubed sign post with holes?

Hey all, I'm in warren Michigan area. I found a great place for some decent sized scrap hardwood like maple, oak, cherry. Sometimes walnut or other more exotic types. Also, a place called laired plastics has an assortment of different color, sheet plastics various thicknesses as well as blocks of white plastics. In the back they have several bins with different material in each one...  Now, i need a place to get square tubing with the holes in them. I need about 12' of it but i don't need any piece longer than 1' anyone know of the business types that would specifically deal with this stuff? I see them knocked down by cars very often, i can work with those! Lol i just need to know where to look to find them. Google has an overwhelming amount of suppliers, but i don't need long sticks i just need some scraps... Call me cheap, buti would like to find them for as free as possible!

welding cast iron to mild steel

Welding cast iron to mild steel is for the most part done with ornamental iron such as gates and fences. the ornaments are typicaly cast iron such as spearpoints and fit over the top of what ever square tubing size ect you are working with. If you weld say with a mig welder in the normal mannor you rweld will cold roll and ball on you leaving a poor appearance that you will have to spend time grinding to make look good. Fortunatly it is not a matter of strenght or how much penetration ect. It is just ornamentation but must look good. Now take your mig welder with say 035 wire and use pure argon..(less spatter). Turn your welders heat up somewhat past what your normanl setting would be for what ever thickness you are using. Use breif spot welding like techniques overlapping as needed. You will find that this makes a good wash bead with no undercut or cold roll. The argon gas helps to keep down all the extra spatter welding cast iron to mild steel seems to cause. Larger peices such as caps for say 4by4 gate posts or fence posts, i preheat as uniformely as possibly to just under cherry red then weld as described. It welds badly because cast iron is actualy dirty, literaly with particles of dirt in the cheap castings, wich the ornaments are. Not haviong the need to be anealed or nodular for instance. If the welds are not going to show then you dont have to do this. It will still weld, just do not expect the clean perfect welds you are used to.  And NO I do not have PICS AND I dont own a digital camera nor do i know how to use one let alone put them on a computer.

bare bronze welding cast iron

If you happen to have a some what rare car, or one that is simply thirty or more years old, you may find that if you ever crack your manifold exauhst that you can not get another by simply going to a (pick and pull) So, the first thought is..most of the time, "I will simply zap it with NIRod". WRONG! an old manifold that has repeatedly heated and cooled is very brittle and the sudden change in temp and too rapid cooling may crack it even more. Now what i do is use bare bronze rod and braze the crack. Here is how i do it. First I find the ends of the cracks and drill a 1/4 hole half way through the material at each end of the cracks. Next I use a rose bud torch and heat up the cast iron as evenly as possible peening with a hammer lightly to releive stress in the casting. After about five minutes of this I quickly switch to a oxy-actl. brazing tip and start my pass. The first thing i do is heat up as much of the crack as i can to cherry red and sear one coat of bronze using plenty of flux. Then I start at one end of the crack and fill in the crack that i had previously veed out with a grinder to half way of the depth of the material and no more than 1/4 inch wide. I use an overlapping spot weld like technique. i lay a small amount of bronze, remove heat for a second and overlapp where i left out. When done I have a bronze brazing weld with no undercut or cold roll. Then i use the rose bud again for some post heating gradulay reducing the heat and peening with hammer again. Then I quickly take the whole peice and cover it in powdered lime so that it cools very slowly. This will stop it from cracking due to rapid cooling. Also it may put some ductility in the cast iron. It takes about four hours to be cool enough to touch with the bare hand. Then I grind the bronze weld flush and inspect the weld to see if i got proper bonding, all you should see is a ribbon of nbronze that has no porosity or cavities. I have also done rare boat manifolds like this when repeative NIRod was used at other shops and they broke every time. Still no 100 percent with cast iron like this. Sometimes it just cracks more, after all it is a dirty porous metal that is very brittel. Anyway, i have had very good luck doing it this way

The low-down: Where have I been?

It may be a bit narcissistic for me to think anyone missed me or even noticed I was gone, but for those of you that did notice heres the low-down.Without a doubt, the time I spent working at Instructables last summer was the most fun I have ever had in my life. It was the perfect combination of working among smart creative individuals ( Eric, Christy, Tim, Paul, and Noah), having such an open ended job where I was actually paid to do what I love, and being in bright sunny free thinking northern California. The cherry on top of this summer of awesomeness was going to Burning Man (see pic below). It was something I had wanted to do ever since I had read about it online many years ago, and, as fate would have it, I ended up going the first year I was actually old enough to.I don't think I am ever going to forget driving Tim's manual truck (I don't know how to drive stick) on a deserted road in Nevada, at 3:30 am Sunday morning, the energy drinks wearing off and Tim sleeping peacefully in the passenger seat, while it rained intermittently, with only a vague idea where I was going, and doing this all with just a NY state learners permit. Nor will I forget getting my first sight of the playa, just as the sun was coming up, with all the massive metallic sculptures glistening on the horizion. The week that followed was just pure surreal amazingness. Anything I wrote about my first Burning Man experience wouldn't give it justice, but Tim describes it nicely in his Burning Man instructable. The most surprising thing about the summer though, was that by the end of it I actually looked forward to going back to school. I wanted to learn circuit building and other cool electrical engineering skills that I could incorporate into my future Instructables projects. I wanted to be able to post impressive electronic projects, instead of just minor circuit hacks like the tazer glove and capacitor charger. I wanted to master the movement of the electron. One plane trip from SFO to JFK later, I'm back home. The contrast between Frisco and NY was staggering. If there was one word to describe how NY looked to me at that time it would be "gray". The experience was like watching the Wizard of Oz in reverse, going from the bright, colorful, surreal land of Oz back to black and white Kansas. Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown. I am of the opinion that NYC is the single greatest city in the world (California wins as a state, but in terms of a single city nothing can compare to NY). If you don't agree with me, stand in the center of the Brooklyn Bridge and turn around to get a full 360 degree perspective. Your opinion will be swayed if not changed. Still, September 07 was a very gray month for me. It took me a few weeks to wade through the bureaucratic bullshit of Brooklyn Poly and finally get registered for classes. The classes I did get registered for were all prerequisites and nowhere near my area of interest. I know I am going to have to suck it up and complete them eventually (especially now that my school has merged with NYU, so I get to graduate with a much more impressive degree then the school I was originally accepted into), but at the time I was just too miserable and distracted to pay attention in class. It was even hard for me to respond to e-mails from summertime coworkers because hearing about the activities at the tower brought back memories of a happier time. I was in a state of near-complete mental shutdown, my creativity was shot, and I was depressed. I decided that I needed to take a break from school, so I took a leave of absence for the Spring semester. That leave of absence bought me a time period of 8 months to do whatever I wanted. I figure why not live out my weaboo fantasy, and travel to Japan. I can not say exactly when my obsession with Japanese culture began. Maybe it was subconsciously planted in my brain with the cherry tree in front of my childhood home, cultivated with anime, and brought to fruition when I actually started reading about their history and culture. Whatever the reason, it has been something I've always wanted to do, and what better time to "find myself" then while on a break from college (Its stereotypical-tastic!). There was only one obstacle standing between me and the romantic imagery I had of bathing in hot-springs and meditating in front of Shinto shrines ... money, at least a few thousand dollars of it. Japan aint cheap, and even if I was going to get a job to support me while I was there, I would still need a butt-load of money for the initial travel and living investment. (On that note if any of you Instructablites knows someone in Japan who you could get me in touch with regarding job opportunities or living quarters, or has some advice for living cheaply while there, I'm all ears) I spent most of January half-assedly looking for a job. I did not devote my whole ass to the task because, no matter how much I wanted to go to Japan, I wasn't too excited about the prospect of getting a minimum wage job which utilized none of my skills (I have very unique skills, so finding a job that used them would be next to impossible). It was looking as though my next few months would be filled with minimum wage menial labor. That is until I thought of throwing myself on the mercy of Eric and Christy, and asking for my old job back. I lacked the testicular fortitude to ask them directly, and so reverting to grade school mentality (the one that figures rejection will hurt less through proxy), I asked Tim to test the waters and see if my old job was still available (grade school version: Psst Tim, I've got a crush on Eric & Christy ::school girl giggles:: can you ask if they like me). Tim was kind enough to oblige. A few e-mails later I found out I could come back as long as I promised to return to school in September. (This was no problem because I had already made the same promise to my parents, and myself because I didn't want to loose my 20k a year scholarship). One plane trip at the end of February from JFK to OAK later, I'm back in California. My longterm goal for the next few months is to live as cheaply as possible, learn Japanese, and try to acquire some work that I can do while in Japan. Living cheaply has been easier then expected. I quit smoking (something I thought would be much harder then it was, but after two months of lukewarm-turkey I was able to eliminate my nicotine cravings entirely). I am able to feed myself almost entirely off the excess of others, with the occasional purchased produce being the exception. I bike for transportation (that same yellow road bike in the picture below). I'd say that overall, it took more effort to stop being a consumer-whore then it did to quit smoking, but it feels equally good to be free of both of those bad habits. Well thats my story. I should probably get back to work.New instructables coming soon ...

First Woodworking Project as Wedding Gift - Many questions on desk making!

I know this is a long post but I would be grateful to any of you for being willing to read it. So I am going to be married soon and moving into my first real adult apartment.  As a wedding gift to my new wife I want to make us a really neat computer table setup.  We have a room laid out as an office for the two of us so I wanted to try and make a large desk that would run along three walls in a giant U.  I am planning to make it modular in the sense that it will actually be 3 straight desks plus 2 corner units and each can work independently of the others.  She is a huge steampunk fan so I want to use pipe as the structure  that I paint a brass color and then make a wood a nice dark cherry color. While there are some great plans on pipe desks I have a few questions. 1. Most of the desks I see are MDF/Ply + pipe.  Is this strong enough to use as a desk for crafts, art, and to hold several monitors all at once?  I am sure the pipe is but I am concerned about the ply or mdf bowing.  If I use normal wood planks to reinforce the bottom will that allow it to remain more sturdy? 2. How hard is it to disassemble these? We plan on moving many times in our life and I'd like to build a design that not only can break down into the 5 separate desks but can actually be disassembled.  I hear MDF/Plywood doesn't like taking screws more than once.  If I screw the table-top into the frame using screws and flanges is that a - do it once and it is done sort of thing or can I unscrew them to move the desktop without ruining the top? 3. Assuming trying to rescrew it together would ruin the table I had the idea of creating a frame with wood blocks screwed into the flanges that had been given raised pegs - probably carved out of the wood.  The desktops would then have fitted holes carved into them - assuming I use a thick frame underneath the ply like 2/4 lumber - so that I can just lay the desktop on the pegs and weight would hold it in place.  My question is whether or not this has the same strength as screwing the  desktop directly to the frame.  Assuming the holes and pegs are well-fitted and near flush would I get enough strength for a sturdy table? 4. I've been really fascinated with the planked wood tables I've seen on here.  It seems easy enough to build a solid wood underframe and then cut plywood planks and screw them to the frame.  My only question is for corner units.  Most modern corner desks are big pieces of MDF that have been shaped.  Assuming my corner piece is straightforward - just a square table with one corner loped off - how hard would it be to create a corner desk with a planked top?  Could I do it with just a jigsaw?   5. I've noticed quite a few of the plans use aluminum pipes and Kee Lite or Kee Klamp fittings.  These seem rather expensive, and if I am doing a cheap MDF top I want to know if there is a cheaper metal alternative that still has good structural capacity.  These are desk tops for computers - maybe 120-200 lb load limit maximum for the entire desk.  Could I use plumping pipe?  Are there cheaper fittings than Kee Lite that are still easy to disassemble when I want to move? Thanks in advance for any answers!
