An empty city

Via Laughing Squid's Twitter feed, I came across this; Filmmaker Ross Ching created this eerie time-lapse of San Francisco in which all the city’s streets, bridges, and sidewalks are completely empty. The effect was achieved not by shutting down San Francisco’s streets, but by clever digital trickery. San Francisco is my absolute favourite place in the world, and watching this video brought on a weird kind of homesickness - there are streets I walked several times a day, some within a block or two of the apartment we used in August, or only metres from HQ, and watching them without the lively crowds is both fascinating and creepy. Enjoy: Of course, you're a Maker, and you're curious about how the cars and pedestrians were erased from the city... *sigh*

City Flying Taxi

LINK"Developed by the British company Avcen, the Jetpod is a small twin-jet aircraft with newly developed VQSTOL (Very Quiet Short Take-off and Landing) technology - and it’s aimed to make short-distance air travel possible in built-up urban areas by the year 2010.""75 Jetpods would service a city the size of London and thereby relieve road traffic of 37,000 return car journeys every day. A one-way flight from outer London to the city centre would take just 4 to 6 minutes. The Jetpod doesn’t even require a conventional runway. It can land on grass, dirt or stone-strewn areas. Avcen designed the Jetpod using the latest jet engine technologies for optimal fuel efficiency and lower emissions noise levels, when compared to car transportation.TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSDRIVE SYSTEM: Dual jet enginesENGINE THRUST: 2 x 13.3 kN (3,000 lbs)CRUISING SPEED: 550 km/h (350 mph)FLYING RANGE: 1480 km (920 miles)OPERATING PAYLOAD: 700 kg (1,543 lbs)SEATING CAPACITY: 7"This is pretty cool, can't wait to see if it actually gets into production.

How do I build a minecraft city?

I want to build a medieval city/large town, but I don't know how to start. I could use superflat, but that would be a little strange because it is just an endless plain. I could also level ground in a default world, but that would take very long. I wonder if I should just make it to flow with the terrain (hills, etc.), but I don't exactly know how to do that. Could you suggest how I should do that and maybe a few other tips on city-building?

Thunderbirds are go!

Abu Dhabi has started to build what it says is the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste car-free city.Masdar City will cost $22bn (£11.3bn), take eight years to build and be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses. The city will be mostly powered by solar energy and residents will move in travel pods running on magnetic tracks. Finally, the world imagined by Gerry Anderson is starting to be built - whole cities built as one thing, people travelling on monorail pods, centralised desalination plants, massive hydrogen plants... the chances that they will need International Rescue seem greater with every corner you turn.Still, it could be A Good Thing - if it works, this could be a big stimulus to other nations to start working on carbon neutrality with a vengeance. Certainly the promotional video makes the whole thing sound very tempting ...BBC articleMasdar Initiative homepageDeveloper's promotional video

Making a City Out of Jell-O

Liz Hickok likes to recreate cities out of Jell-O and has been doing it for four years now. She's fascinated by the colors that are possible as well as the fact that it degrades in interesting ways. Watch this video to see how she goes about planning a recreation of the Mission District (woo-hoo!) in San Francisco with Jell-O. This reminds me that I need to get on with my own Jell-O project. I'll definitely be rewatching this video for help in the near future.via Wooster Collective

How would 'Rich' people live in The Green City?

I've been asked, "How would Rich people live in my Green City?". Since The Green City is a forum for pure Freedom in every sense of the word (in a good way). Rich people could simply pay for what they want, or need in the Green City. But, it's also a place of serenity. Peace, not full of frustration or anger or hate. It's a good, safe, serene place to live. When I first began discussing The Green Cities possibilities, I started from the ground up. People that already have a lot of money, could simply build what they want in The Green City, but I'm sure as time went on, they would see the 'Good' of what the City is trying to accomplish and they would do whatever they could to help it. If you are Rich you could help shield the Green City from adversity by the power of your money, thus preserving the serenity of the City and the serenity of your home. Not to mention if you have family or friends in the City you would also be helping them out. This is NOT a city where a person can go and become a 'Bum' and live off of others. Everyone MUST contribute something or it is ALL for nothing. Freedom is NOT synonymous with lazy. But, good works can be done in a variety of ways. One does NOT have to work out in the field to do good with those around them. That's all the Green City is about, freedom and doing good to those around you. Simple. Go to: www.thegreencity1.com

Sex and the City themed party ideas, please!

I can't be the only person who wants to do this, especially since a new movie is coming out soon. So, what to do? I' m not getting much inspiration browsing the web, but so far I've decided on doing a Cosmos and NY theme (duh!). Everyone will dress up as their favorite character. I have come up with a SATC themed drinking game. I've even thought of leaving funny props around the house, like the infamous Post-It note.  I'd like to do more stuff like that, but I need some suggestions. How about music? (specific songs) Entertainment?  Photo props? Decoration projects? Table settings? Recipes?  I'd really appreciate any input here, but I prefer anything that is cheap, easy and awesome.

Wheelchairs suck!

Hi, my name is Mary Heacock, a.k.a. Queen Mary, because if I have to sit in a chair, I’m gonna make it a THRONE! Wheelchairs suck! So I made something better, but no one cares. The market actually has disincentives to innovation. It just cost too much to innovate with very little to no reward. The current marketplace just will not respond. So I am building an entirely new collaborative marketplace to sky rocket innovation and bury costs. Cripple A will provide a collaborative platform (Autodesk Fusion 360) to support innovation and small manufacturing. This is truly what they mean by triple bottom line. The cripple wins with better gear, the innovator wins with micromanufacturing opportunities and the public wins with an entirely new bottom up economy. See the instructible that I published to explain my journey here:  https://www.instructables.com/id/The-THRONE-how-to-fix-a-crappy-industry-pun-intend/ I am but one person, but I know I can make a difference. Do you know anyone who’s up for changing the world? Better buckle up, Mary PS I have holes in my brain so I am terribly unreliable especially with forums such as this. Please be patient with me as I work out a system.

TechShop's $60M Expansion Plans - coming to a city near you?

This announcement is posted on behalf of Jim Newton, founder of TechShop. September 23, 2013 I have some very exciting news to share with you about the TechShop community and our aggressive expansion plans. Today, the "Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act", also known as the JOBS Act, became law in the United States.  The JOBS Act allows a small company to advertise that it is seeking to raise money through the sale of securities.  Before the JOBS Act, it had been illegal for companies to advertise the offering of securities, and the law restricting that advertising had been in place for 80 years!  That restriction tied the hands of small companies and made it very difficult or even impossible for them to legally attract funding. The JOBS Act, which is a bipartisan law overwhelmingly passed by the Senate and the House and signed into law by President Obama, became law today.  It will be invaluable to start-up companies because it will make it easier for them to seek investment, and will lead to the creation of many new companies and many new jobs. Today, in concert with the JOBS Act becoming law, TechShop has launched an aggressive campaign to raise up to $60 million in funding through the sale of TechShop stock in amounts of $25,000 or more, and through the acceptance of loans of $25,000 or more from individuals.  These funds will be used to build and support new local TechShop locations. Here is a link to the official press release about TechShop's $60 million crowd-funding campaign: When I opened the first TechShop in Menlo Park CA back in 2006, it was only possible to crowd-fund the money we needed because it was legal to advertise our fundraising efforts in the state of California.  California is one of only two states in the United States that allows such advertising...the other is the State of Texas. It was only because we were allowed to advertise that we were able to reach out to our community and ask individual people to loan us $25,000 each.  We crowd-funded TechShop San Francisco and TechShop San Jose the same way, raising about $2.5 million for each of those locations in a matter of weeks. Before the JOBS Act, TechShop has crowd-funded almost $10 million so far to open our existing locations, but we had to do it either within California, or through direct communication with potential investors and lenders.  It was difficult to do this because we could not advertise outside of California, so our tried-and-true method of crowd-sourced fundraising from our community was not scalable outside of the state.  This has limited our expansion. Now, because of the JOBS Act, we can pursue funding from individuals across the country and fulfill our mission to provide every person in every community with access to TechShop's tools, resources and information.  This will allow us to drive the restoration of American manufacturing, help to create new companies and new jobs, and empower even more people to be makers! Here are the next cities in which we would love to build TechShop locations: Baltimore MD Boston MA Cedar Valley IA Chandler AZ (opening Nov 2013) Chicago IL Grand Rapids MI Los Angeles CA Menlo Park CA (moving to a new location) New York City NY Pittsburgh PA Portland OR Seattle WA St. Louis MO Washington DC (in Arlington VA) If your city is not listed above, here's the most exciting part:  As part of our $60 million fundraising campaign, we have set up a way on our web site for people to vote to determine which community the next TechShop will be located! For more information about how individuals, companies, institutions, and governments can invest or become lenders in TechShop, and how they can vote for their hometown to be the next to have a new TechShop location, please visit our investment page. Please help us spread the word so we can open new locations in the communities that want, and need, TechShop the most. Sincerely, Jim Newton Founder and Chairman, TechShop, Inc. http://www.techshop.ws/

Hello All, I am considering building a electric motorcycle in the next year, all the Instructables I have read on the subject boast top speeds of 70 mph and a 10 - 20 mile range. I live in a small city in Canada where the maximum speed limit is 50KMh(~30mph) and the city is not even 7 miles across, also there is nothing outside the city that is close enough to get to with a ev such as this. My question is how does the speed and distance connect, for example, if I was to travel at half the speed would I be able to expect to get double the distance?
