Why are there few or no clouds in the stratosphere? Answered

The stratosphere (STRAT  uh sfihr) lies above the troposphere. It extends from about 11km to 50km above the earth. In the lower part of the stratosphere, the temperature does not change with height. But, in the upper part , temperature increases with height.  At 50km, the temperature is about 7o/c.          Air in the stratosphere is dry and thin, and there are very few or no clouds.

Cloud Tablet for Education

I am a teacher and have seen a great deal of technology in education. Unfortunately most of the time it is poorly executed. The latest trend is tablets. I see schools getting iPad and I have to wonder if there is not a cheaper solution. One where we make tablets affordable and easy to use. I am not saying that the iPad is not an excellent tool, but it is very expensive and most of the teachers I work with would be lost with how to use it effectively. I think that the platform is excellent and that the iPad is the best you can get in its area. I would like to explore how a cloud based tablet would work in education. I know that with cloud computing you can use hardware that costs less with no problem. I have looked into Joli OS as a possible operating system for such a tablet, but I am an English teacher. I need help. Someone or several someones who can help me wrap my brain around the best way to do this. I have no experience in programming. I am very familiar with computers, but the learning curve with what I want to do it steep. I am looking for a partner to explore this idea. Failing that I would like some advice.

How clouds act as an air pump to suck in air. Not how you think they do!

I have been thinking a long time about the biotic pump theory but I still don't understand it.  The math is too hard for me.   BUT it got me to thinking.   It is a point of major dispute in the meteorological world.   Does condensation cause low pressure?  2 russian nuclear physicists say yes,  almost everyone else says no!   So,  I thought and thought and thought.  Now I think I have a simple enough explanation And yes, they may not necessarily cause low pressure under the cloud (probably do)  but they definitely suck in air from elsewhere.  Imagine a fleet of huge doughnut shaped dirigible airships. They are sitting at 10,000 ft just floating there.   Now the commander tells everyone that they must now fly at 5000 ft.   So they turn on their propellers (in the hole in the doughnut) and drop down to 5000 ft by propelling air up  through the hole.   Now staying at 5000 ft is achieved by running the propellers at just fast enough.  So at 5000 ft they are pumping air from under the doughnuts to above them.   Now imagine a cumulus cloud.  Even though it is not fixed in size or shape and it does not have a propeller,  it is doing the exact same thing.  Air is being pumped up the middle and the clouds are sitting lower in the sky than they "should",  because they are sending that column of air up into the sky.   Here is my video to explain it visually.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPO8dWm_GIg

Windows 9x Clouds Remake

After searching and searching the internet, I could not find one single remake of Microsoft's signature wallpaper, "Clouds". So I set off to make one. The original picture was a 1024x768 grainy JPEG file. It was included in both Windows 95 and Windows 98 as selectable wallpapers, and it was the background found in the cover art of both releases of Windows 9x. My remake is a 1680x1050 PNG which I made fully from scratch, using Microsoft's Clouds.jpg as reference. Here on Instructables I have included my remake, as well as Microsoft's original. feature request: tag cloud

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to ask for this, but wouldn't a tag cloud or weighted category list (or whatever it's called) be a nice feature on Instructables as well? One could convert the already entered keywords into user generated tags and then allow reader to add new tags to entries etc. I think tag clouds are flexible than simple categories (although they don't replace them). Mammatus Clouds Observed in Aurora Colorado

A thunderstorm rolled in at about 3:00 p.m. near my house in Aurora Colorado. I was amazed by the clouds that were present, and recognized some of them as "Mammatus Clouds." These clouds are fairly rare, I've only ever seen then twice. They are named "Mammatus Clouds" because they resemble a mammals breast. These clouds were not as distinctly mammatus as the previous ones that I had observed, but they are still mammatus clouds nontheless. I thought that these are really cool, and that someone might enjoy seeing them. Enjoy! 3:00-3:55 6-15-2012 Aurora, Colorado

Cloud University: Open Source Education

I've been spending lots of time surfing the web recently trying to learn new things and to apply that knowledge to the various projects I have going at any given time. Lately I've been spending quite a bit of time scanning through various Linux forums and at Instructables.com. I was thinking about how the Internet has changed into something really amazing. It has become a medium of great synergy, where people can work together to accomplish things much greater than they could alone, or even in organizations of various sizes that have existed throughout human history. I am truly impressed by the synergy that has developed on the web, and wanted to develop some way of directing those energies towards a positive end. I was trying to think of something useful when I realized I shouldn't be working alone to develop this, it should be brainstormed by the Internet community. I realized that it would be hard to agree upon a direction to take, since everyone has their own concepts of what issues are most pressing, and since there is such strong disagreement about what can be done to solve those problems. I thought there would need to be a lot of dialogue, a sharing of information, and much deliberation before a plan could be reached. Then I realized that that should be the plan: education. If people could come together at a website laid out similarly to a social networking site and share information the oblique benefits would be enormous. I realize there are already sites like this. Wikipedia is fantastic. But there is only so much knowledge you can gain from reading information on a page. I was thinking this online learning institution could use tools employed by higher education already. It could have rooms where people could meet and have live chats, video, and shared presentations. Instructors could develop class pages in a simple GUI layout similar to Myspace with course information, forums, and feedback. We could even have tiered learning where an instructor requires verification that a student has sufficent skill in prerequisite classes before moving on. This could be a place where experts in various fields could come together to discuss their fields and continue to progress as well as place where curious minds could find help. Students in traditional universities could use it as a study guide to help in their course work. Of course, this would require that people with knowledge in their field donate their energies, but I don't think this is asking too much. If many people just donate a little bit of time it would have a huge impact. By working together the cost for any one person would be small, while the benefit to every single person would be enormous. I intend to pursue this vision, but I cannot do it alone. The obvious first step will be to start developing a website with a forum. I'll start working on this. If anyone has any suggestions or wants to help, please let me know.

Legitimate botnet (zombie) farming?

If this doesn't exist yet, I have no doubt whatsoever that it's not far away. Is there a company doing legitimate zombie farming? ie, a cloud of computers running a local server which process data from a centralised distributor? People do it illegally, selling processing power from trojan infected machines, but is anyone doing it as a legal business? Imagine you could download a small application which sits in memory and draws off a certain percentage of your CPUs runtime, depending on the machine's usage. This processing power would form part of a cloud sourced supercomputer, with runtime sold to whoever. And say you were paid maybe a couple of dollars per 24 hours of processing, depending on CPU speed. Leaving a couple computers on 24 7 would add up to a not inconsiderable sum per month. You could salvage some old machines and leave them going in the basement. I've worked at animation studios, as an example, and for sure they would be keen to, rather than intermittently hire a room full of fast machines as a render farm, outsource it to a cloud. SETI did it. Like I say, if this isn't already being done, it will be soon.

This evening was the last chance to see a transit of Venus in our lifetimes.  The next one won't be for another 100 years. It was 100 degrees (~37 celcius) and we had storm clouds, but the clouds parted and I saw it!!!!  The hastily thrown together viewers worked and we knew it was Venus instead of dirt on the lens because the little black dot moved.  I took pictures of my set-up, but the macro feature on the camera was malfunctioning so no pictures of venus crossing the sun disc. Anyone else get to see it?

Anti Gravity Idea...

OK I had this idea. I was online and thought up this idea for an anti gravity machine. This is it: use extremely static negatively charged materials for anti gravity. It could work the same way lightning clouds do. The base of the cloud is negatively charged and the ground become positively charged. Now if the material of the anti gravity "thing" is charged with static electricity, wouldn't it repel the ground? Now I am by far no expert in any of this...I just thought it up. What do you guys think?

So, you would you charge a cannon ball?

If you have to contribute to my list, please do. All software's have there pros and cons, so more project the better.  - Thingspeak. This is a in the cloud site to witch you can send your sensor data and switch things - Exosite. Pretty similar to Thingspeak - IFTTT. This also a cloud site, with witch you can have your sensor data communicate with other services on the web like google, facebook, twitter - Openhab. Is a open home automation software that runs on the Raspberry Pi, it also has a android app. Unfortunately not that easy to configure. - EasyIoT. Is a pretty new server application, that looks great on the web and phone browser. Still new and in development.  Like I said all projects are have there pros and there cons. If somebody has to contribute to this list, please do.
