Compressed air engine help?

My friend and i are making a compressed air engine strong enough to work lawnmowers or better yet, a small car. Does anybody know any equations for calculating torque or RPM's? We are somewhat basing it off of the Airhogs air engine but better. Also, does anybody think making it out of PVC would be a good decision? or aluminum? I don't know if it will make lots of heat since there is no igniting of gases so i think it will be safe to use PVC for a lighter engine so more power can be used for moving. any thing wrong/bad about that?

Carbonate drinks with compressed air? Answered

So there are a lot of carbonators out there, and they all cost in the range of $50-$100, which is a lot, but the real cost comes form the co2 cartridges. So I was wondering.... why not just use compressed air? sure, it would take longer for all the co2 in the compressed air to reach equilibrium between the water and the air, but i do believe that if you let it sit for long enough, it would work. other gasses would also diffuse into the water, like oxygen, but since gasses are hard to taste, it shouldn't make a big difference. (co2 actually forms carboxylic acid, which tastes sour, but i can live with it not being exactly the right taste) all i have to test this theory is 115 psi from an air compressor... would this be enough?

How to use an Compressed Air tank?

I am new to compressed air tanks. I need some details about them. (For an air car actually) 1. How to refill a 4500 psi air tank. 2. How do I know the pressure of air comming out . ( Most Important) Can anybody please provide me a schematic drawing on how do I connect the air tank, the pressure gauges (Gauge 1. which shows the pressure and amount of air in the tank and Gauge 2 which shows the pressure of air comming out)  and the compressor with the copper tubes. I read on a site formula for power of an air engine is HP= PLAN / 33000 where P. Mean effective pressure in pounds per square inch. L. Stroke in feet. A. Piston area in square inches. N. Number of power strokes per minute. How do I get value of N for the formula. Thanks for any help.

Building a custom shaped Compressed air tank

Hello, am looking into the possibility of building my own paintball markers, and wanted to do a custom way of using the air system, compared to most markers. I was thinking either a square shape, but after finding an article that was talking about water and gases tanks and why they are build cylindrical, i realized that maybe that might not be as easy or practical. another possible idea would be a flask shaped tank, but for the design am looking at it would need special commendations, none the less I wish to see if something like that could be possible.

Thanks for the advice on my earlier question guys but now I'm wondering what the best size to make my tank. Just so everyone knows I'm trying to improve a pneumatic  air soft gun I made a while back. I just want to know if a really small canister, like one with an aria of 12 square inches for instance, could launch my air soft bb just as fast as a 100 sq inch canister if they both had the same amount of pressure inside. If not then whats the best canister size in between the two to launch my air soft bb. Thanks for the help : )

Problem with compressed air, ping pong turret

Hello all, I am in the process of making a ping pong ball turret powered by an air compressor, I’m using a solenoid valve to trigger the air electronically.i have had some exact diameter steel pipe milled out which is 250mm, so the diameter of the balls are 40mm and the diameter of the pipe is roughly 40.5-41mm. And I’ve sealed off one end with a tapped out hole for a nozzle fitting. My compressor goes up to 7 bar -around 100,psi -. Do finally to the topic 0f my question, i have tested the firing of the balls by firing 7 bar through an compressor gun, and to my surprise it didn’t fire across the garage like I expected, instead it made a very high pitched noise and the ball vibrated inside the tube, eventually the ball would rise up the tube and eventually speed up towards the end of the tube but still only launched at most 1 meter. Any help on how to fix this problem would be excellent. As I expect 100psi through an exact diameter tube would fire the ping pong ball very far. Feel free to ask any questions if I haven’t been detailed enough. Cheers

Valve that shuts off once a set pressure is reached?

For something I am in the process of designing, I need a valve that can be connected to a high pressure source and will allow the gas from the high pressure side to to flow into a sealed container on the other side until a pre-set pressure is reached. It should then shut off. The system used to do this should also be able to handle a very high pressure spike (possibly even the type of compressed pressure wave generated during a super-sonic combustion / detonation) on the sealed container side. If you can provide a diagram or the name of a type of valve or even just a description of how this could be done it would be appreciated. No computer controlled stuff please. ##################### The answer I have discovered is to use a regular diaphragm-type pressure regulator. ######################

Quick Release Piston Blowback?

I have put a great deal of money into constructing a 6" air launcher, but to my dismay things didn't quite go as planned with the valve design.  I have attached a picture below of the valve's design.  The idea is that when the air is released from behind the piston, the piston should move back allowing air to exit through the 5" pipe.  The valve successfully holds pressure, but fails to fly back and I believe this is a result of the piston and barrel it is up against being equal in size.  I wouldn't have designed this in this way, but the large schedule 80 pvc tee only allows 1/4 inch around the sides of the piston at best.  I am curious if anyone has any ideas to make this piston valve work, I really don't want to pay 200 dollars to get a butterfly valve on it and would greatly appreciate any ideas that may make this work.  I promise videos of the beast once I get it up and running.  Launching 6" objects using up to 80psi will be a blast, literally if I ever get crazy enough to bring it up that high.

Compressed air can - How to make larger one, refillable?

Hello! You know those compressed air can for cleaning dust form electronics and computers. They are working well, but if you use them a lot they become pretty expensive. For heavy user's alternative is to use compressor. They are not so expensive any more, but they are loud, heavy, large and not so practical to carry with you… So, after take in consideration that written above great thing would be to make reusable, larger, compressed air can. Something simple to use, some on/off leverage and small nozzle, and also refillable - fill it with that compressor which is heavy and loud. Some manometer would be nice, just to know how much air is inside. That "can" should be larger than Do you have any idea how to make it? Please share details, ideas, plans, other help… Thank you in advance! Best to all!

How to compress air into a hollow solid without a valve?

Hi  Really need some help with this one, have searched everywhere but cant seem to figure it out. I know there is probably a very easy solution i'm missing so please help. Basically I want to compress CO2 at around 80 psi into a hollow metal. I have drilled a micro hole and created an opening (about 2mm radius) into the metal. My problem is after I compress the CO2 in there how do I remove the compressor nozzle and seal the hole without the CO2 escaping.  The metal is small and there is no place for a valve. Is there such a thing as a self sealing removable valve? Or could I use a valve  with two openings and pump liquid metal (that would than solidify) and seal the hole so I can remove the compressor?

Airsoft Tension/Compression Mortar

I've been looking for a way to make an airsoft mortar which uses either tension (by way of wrist rocket or similar bands) or compression (by way of a spring). I'm thinking it'd be similar to the trip mine here: anybody could give me ideas or post an instructable, that would be great. I don't want to use air compressors or light anything on fire, because it's just not practical mid game (that would also be just a manipulation of a potato gun). I also think compression or tension could be a lot safer if done properly. Any ideas on making shells to hold airsoft bb's and properly disperse them when fired would be great too.P.S. I'm totally willing to offer my input on the situation if somebody else wants to collaborate on such an 'ible.

Manual air compressor

I had this idea just drop on me a few minutes ago and I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on if something like this would be feasible or not. Also if anyone thinks it's a good idea just go ahead and build it because I dont have the tools or space for something like this in any case. The idea is to have some sort of tank with a large internal volume, cut it of at the top and arrange a sort of secured piston with a heavy weight on top, attach it all to a frame so that the piston stays level and secure. The piston with the weight on can then be connected to a multi-stage pulley system to allow one to lift the  heavy weigth, sure it would take a long time but for a manual air compressor it should be feasible Then at the bottom of the tank one would have a high pressure release valve with some sort of standard connector for transfering the compressed air to a sort of pressure tank for use. I never saw anything like this before, although I'm sure someone must have done it at one point or another. So what do you all think? Any input?

Air Compressor/Vacuum Pump

I have a theory: You have your supply of compressed air. You connect that by hose to one branch of a y-connector. The other branch is connected to a hose that goes into some sort of fluid that you want to move from one vessel to another. The trunk of the y is your exhaust (in theory). So now I give, say, 15 psi out of my air supply and that shoud drag my fluid out of its vessel through the y connector to the destination of my choosing. Would that work?

How to build an inflatable "brain" costume for stage - seeking ideas?

Hi all, a friend of mine asked me to help him design and build a costume for a stage show he's doing; he will be wearing a monster mask and needs an inflatable "brain" to suddenly inflate (note, he changes costumes every 5-10 minutes during the show so it's something that needs to be fairly portable and easy to change into). We tried using CO2 canisters with balloons, a good effect but not nearly big enough. I'm thinking about some kind of air pig with a valve that he can clip a connecting hose to. If anyone has done anything like this or has a good recommendation I'd love to hear! Many thanks, DAZU

Low Powered Air Conditioner

I live in a converted bus made into a mobile home in Outback Australia. I'm currently building a 'Solar System'  so I can go anywhere without relying on hooking up to mains power. The biggest problem I'm having is finding an 'Inverter' that will handle power consumption to run my 'Fridge' and ''Air Conditioner', I have a 2500w Inverter but this can only run an 'Aircon' up to 300w, so tell me where you can get one that runs at this power level !! I have an idea that may get over both problems (Fridge and Aircon). I was looking through 'ebay' and found a 80L Fridge/Freezer that runs on 12v, mainly used for 4WDs and RVs. I'm just wondering if I could somehow carefully drill a hole into the freezer cabinet and coil copper or aluminum small bore pipe around the internal walls of this, then have a small 12v DC Pump circulating 'Antifreeze' or similar through a external radiator with fan blowing through this into my living area. I know this will be a drain on batteries as the freezer will be constantly running due to the warmer return fluid circling around inside the cabinet, but I'm not really worried about this as I will have 4 Solar Panels totaling around 500w production at 7-8amps and  4 Deep Cycle Batteries rated at 100ah each, total 400ah. Will this setup be efficient as a air cooling system without effecting the frozen food in my freezer too much. Would love to here any comments on this and also any suggestions will be gratefully accepted. Regards Keith

Whats the best way to make an air powered go kart? Answered

I have an old go kart I'm fixing up and decided I want to make it run on compressed air. My question is whats the best way to achieve this? I've been debating between having an air motor drive the wheels directly, or having the air motor turn an alternator/generator to power an electric motor. I figured having the compressed air doing the work would require more torque, and therefor more air, whereas if the air motor just had to turn an alternator/generator it would need less torque and more speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
