Alright I know this question has been asked a hundred times before, but I've searched and none of them have been close to what I specifically want. I have two old computers with some fans and L.E.D's, and I was just wanting to find something to use these things for. Everything I find is either about restoring the computer or just using the shell of one. I want something like robots lights or something like that. Oh, and sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

So one day my speakers, scanner, and internet stopped working (about a week ago). I fixed the internet by reinstalling the driver, and I'm too lazy to reinstall the driver for my scanner. But what I'm most concerned about is that my sound doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling the drivers a couple times, and it works perfectly, except it doesn't work, lol. It's fine until it says restart my computer, after it does it it boots up like the driver didn't do anything. I'm using a realtek driver, I've both tried installing it off of the cd that comes with my computer and downloading the driver straight off of their site. I NEED SOUND!!!!

So, in continuing my series of stupid newbie computer questions, I present: Building Your Own Computer!-The Computer-As you've heard, I first had a computer that messed up, then I took it to the computer dudes, and they said it was completely FUBAR, then I asked how I should salvage it. Now, after laying my eyes on the beautiful Linux-running $72 Computer, I said to myself that I should make one...-What I Have-I stripped my computer tonight, and I came up with a CD drive (doesn't burn, just reads), Floppy drive, hard drive, power supply (how the heck do I understand all those wires?), nice looking heatsink with matching fan, and various other parts from the Windows 98 computer. -The Problems--I checked the links provided at the link above, and the prices had either raised, the item is out of stock, or the item had vanished completely...-I would like to buy a minimum of parts because I am in debt with my parents, and being 13, I don't have a job to pay them off.-I would like to run Linux, as it is one of the coolest things I've found recently. -I do know that the link above is thumb-drive booted, and I would like to avoid that, but no biggie if I can't.-I also don't know that much about computers, so I want to keep the computer sweet and simple. -The components that I salvaged might not work with the new components (I.E. Motherboard)-Maybe more.-Pluses--It will be cheap.-Case mods should be easy.-Mistakes dont cost much.-Linux is free.-Linux looks very nice.-It shouldn't need much RAM to run (Am I correct here?), so I can run more complex programs without it costing me.-I have extra parts from the old Win98 computer that died.-Probably more, but this is all I got right now...First postSecond postI am saying this right now- I suck at understanding computers, and if possible, comment to me like you would your 93 year old grandpa.

. I've had good luck ordering computer parts from TigerDirect.com. Wide selection and reasonable prices. I've been using them for 5-6 years now.. Sales support can be spotty; sometimes you get a salesperson that will lean over backwards to make sure you get what you need and other times they seem to be apathetic. Luckily, the former prevails.. I've only had to make one return and it went without a hitch.. The web site has an excellent search. When you search for, say, "monitor" the results page will have links to different size ranges and price ranges, allowing one to easily drill down to the right product.. . Disclaimer: My only connection to TigerDirect is as a satisfied customer.

Take 3 minutes from your busy schedule as soon as you can to listen to a collection of old computers and motors (a scanner, a hard drive, etc) playing Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht96HJ01SE4From the intro: "No effects or sampling were used. What you see is what you hear (does that even make sense?)Atari 800XL was used for the lead piano/organ soundTexas Instruments TI-99/4a as lead guitar8 Inch Floppy Disk as Bass3.5 inch Harddrive as the gongHP ScanJet 3C was used for all vocals."There are a couple blips and missteps but it's an amazing achievement anyway. Question by RelientOwl 8 years ago | last reply 3 years ago
Hello all. I have been having a really fun time going through the forums lately. I started in the tech section or whatever it is called. I have no idea what page I am on but I know I am looking at posts that are about 3 years old. Not looking at every single post of course but about 5-7 posts per page. But that is all besides the point, let me get to my question. The other day just because I happened to have an s-video cable around I hooked one of our laptops to the TV. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the image on the TV. So I have decided to make an audio cable for it and start to use the computer on the TV for some stuff. Money is tight around here (that is why I am making the audio cable and not buying one) and we do not have cable TV. All we have is a converter box and ever since a really bad storm about 1 1/2 months ago we barely get any channels. I am still trying to get management of my building to look at the antenna on the roof. But after I saw what kind of quality the laptop had on the TV we are starting to look at getting netflix. Figure it is only $7.99 per month and you get your first month free so I think it is worth checking out. Since it looks like we will be using a computer with the TV quite often I have decided to make a media computer out of one of the towers sitting around here. I am not worried about the power of the computer since the tower I have in mind is not all that old. But I am trying to decide what OS to put on it. I know there is a "Windows media" edition but I do not know much about it other then I think it is getting quite old. I am leaning towards putting either XP or Windows 7 on it since I have those disks. But I thought I would ask on here for peoples input on the matter. I plan on networking the computer to my windows 7 desktop in order to access my 1tb hard drive for stuff I download. My wife will be using this computer too so that is part of the reason I am leaning towards windows xp or 7 so she will not feel lost in some OS she does not know. So now you have all the details. Should I just go with XP or 7, or is there something else I should look at?

I have a Compaq Presario 2200 laptop that was given to me. It has a dead hard drive and a dead CD/DVD drive. I would like to replace both of the drives for under 40 dollars. I am happy to replace them with used (but still working) hardware. The hard drive doesn't need to be over 20GB and the CD/DVD drive doesn't have to be super high speed. Unfortunately Compaq did what is called a tattoo on the hard drive. This means that the hard drive must be replaced with a compaq hard drive not just any old laptop hard drive. Because of this I was hoping to get an old compaq pressario 2200 laptop that has a dead screen or dead motherboard that still has a good hard drive and CD drive so that I can salvage. I looked on EBAY but haven't had any luck so far. Are there any other online places where I could get another old compaq pressario 2200 laptop to salvage parts from? Does anyone on instructables have one? Thanks for the help. Anyone who helps me get the parts I need gets best answer.

I have a used computer I bought yesterday and I have a problem. I was adding parts for a computer that "died" and I ran into a problem. I added some RAM and it worked fine. The problem came when I tried to add the hard drive. I pluged it in and while it was starting it said it couldn't find the boot file. I shut it down, removed the hard drive and now in says " NTLDR is missing". WHAT HAPPENED???

My computer has bit the dust (more than I expected when I opened it up), and the CMOS is completely fried...so I have disassembled it and am on the older yet, computer - another Gateway, single threaded CPU and the only port it recognizes on my DSL modem is the USB port......slowing it down EVEN FURTHER. Time to go into debt again for a new one.....*sigh*. But this is why I haven't been around quite as much as I normally am.

I have a unibody macbook which I have recently broken and would be grateful for your help/advice. I dropped my macbook on the floor. As a result a piece of metal (I think it is aluminium but this is a guess) snapped off the screen (internally). This piece of metal was the piece that the hinge screwed into, connecting the screen and the keyboard and allowed the laptop to close. I have attempted to glue this piece back on with various strong adhesives but these have not been strong enough due to it being hinge. I am writing to ask if you think that a form of welding may be a possible solution. The piece is 1.75cm in length and about 3mm across. As you can see from the photos there are three holes which will hold the screws securing the hinge to the computer's base. The piece is attached to the laptop's screen. I have attached two professional photos which I hope show how the piece fits into the overall mechanism. Your input would be most appreciated.

Ok, i was trying to help someone on a different forum with their computer problem. heres the post: "My sister bought a new computer. Its a monster of a computer.. Some HP with 8GB RAM 64bit Vista o.o It didnt have a TV-card, so she bought one and put it in herself. Shes been playing some online game, I dont know which one but whatever. After the game loaded a new patch, she got an error message. Some CCCC.exe errored.. She found out that CCCC-thing was part of a driver of her grafic card. Whenever she tried shutting down the computer now, it would take about 5 minutes, than the 5 seconds she used to have before. And the problem got worse every day. The computer is running really slow. For example hitting the Windows button, it will take her about 3 minutes till it even shows the Windows-menu. She tried downloading a new driver for the grafic card. But after hours of searching she couldnt find the one for her card. So she took an older version of it. But yet.. it wont work. Should she just back-up the whole computer and install Windows new again?" anyone know what to do? all credit will go to the poster upon request.

Dear all, We are a small company located in Singapore and we are starting a community for the trading and reselling of your old and unwanted cables, electronic components or computer parts that are lying around your house. So help us do our part for mother earth by visiting the following link:- http://sites.google.com/site/ventincrecables/green-ventincre As a start and due to the lack of funding, we will temporary use google group to host all advertisement postings. Hopefully, as we move along, more funding will start flowing in to enable us to utilize a better platform like tal.ki so that more people would be able to take part in this small project that we have. We will be really grateful if you can join this community by posting your advertisements and also, donating funds from time to time as these are crucial for the survival of this community. Our future plans would be to include the donation of computers and laptops to communities in developing countries, charities or schools. hey everyone this is my first post(i never realized there was a forum untill now). Heres the idea: ive got a bag of computer parts and among them is an old cd drive. its got a volume control and a headphone jack built into it. my idea is to put a rechargeable battery on it, turning it into the nerdiest walkman in history. my knowledge of computers is only slightly above basic so i was wondering how i can get it to play and switch to different songs. can i do this by making connections on the ribbon cable port, or is this whole project totally absurd?

Newegg is making me mad. I ordered a huge order and it split it up because some parts were heave (i.e. my speakers) but all the lighter parts (motherboard, graphics card etc.) came in a different order. But apperently one of them has the right credit card information and the other doesnt. And this makes me mad. And so here i am to vent. Your welcome.

Waste Heat to Be Used by Conservatory ------------------------- Heat generated by the Univ. of Notre Dame’s high-performance computing department is being used to heat a local greenhouse. The department has placed a containerized data center next to the Ella Morris and Muessel-Ellison Botanical Conservatories and Potawatomi Greenhouse in South Bend, Ind. The waste heat generated by working servers is piped into the greenhouse where it is used to keep succulents and other desert plants warm. CleanTechnica.com reports the university is expected to lower its equipment cooling costs by $100,000. The city will save $70,000 it spends to heat the conservatory. The use of the waste heat is part of the Botanical Society of South Bend’s plan to help make the greenhouses self-sufficient due to budget cuts. ------------------------------ Pretty smart. Picture is of my "brain cactus".

I have an old imac that is pretty useless as a computer, I don't want to throw it away. What parts are safe for kids to play with? (i mean no hazardous materials) to play with if any? Any dangerous pieces when I do take it apart?
So, I want to build a computer, and this would be my first computer. I don't know how to tell how parts are compatible with other parts, and which parts are good. I just want a computer that can surf the web, and support gaming with little to no lag, or freezing. To keep cost down, I don't exactly need to be able to play newer games that can over heat a six month old gaming computer in seconds. I want to keep this project under $400, or at $450 at most. Some games I would like to run is Halo 1 and 2, counter strike, and perhaps WoW. Any, and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

Hello everyone in this wonderful community! I want to share something to see what you think about it! When I finished high school in February last year, my family gave me some money as a present. I put all that money into my new computer. However, I had no other place to put my computer than my work desk. I need this desk for many other things, such as airplane modeling, drawing, designing, soldering, and such. Therefore I have to get a separate desk for my computer. I always enjoy making stuff myself, so I thought that I could design my own desk. So, this is what I came up with. The desk I have designed has a contemporary, extravagant look, and is NOT designed to save space! It will be made of MDF and have a dark glass top. No drawers or shelves needed, except for the keyboard and the mouse. It will be wall-mounted. The MDF will be painted black. I have made the design in AutoCAD 2007 in 3D to see what it will look like, these are the renders I made, of the complete desk, of the structure, and of the pieces needed. --------------- I am not sure of the thickness of MDF and glass that I should use, or if the structure is too heavy or too weak. (I have a desktop computer, not a laptop) Please help me with this part! --------------- If I ever build this, I will make an Instructable of it! Please take your time and say what you think of the design! I will greatly appreciate it!

Our problem is that we have run out of computer parts that actually work. Does anyone know of any places that will ship parts for free (we may be able to pay for shipping) to northwest Ohio? Its mostly IDE and PATA drives and PSU's and DDR ram we need.
