Mystery Contraction ? Answered

Hi all,  I found this contraption today at the tip and was wondering if anyone knew what it might be?  It has been hand-made and looks like it measures something but I can't work out what.  It has a micro amperage meter, an LED, a bunch of coils which look like they are from a heater, and also a analogue clock on top with no hands.  Oh and it also has some small glass tubes on top which look like micro movement switches. I thought it might be used to measure lightening or some other environmental effect.  Maybe earthquakes? any ideas?

Issues with signing 'Winners declaration and release' form with DocuSign

Hi, I have already contacted instructables about these issues last week and they are trying to fix them however I am hoping in the mean time some past contest winners and other members could help me with my issues with signing the document 'Winners declaration and release' sent to me by email using DocuSign after I recently won a contest. The first problem that I am having is that the document requires two separate different signatures, mine (the winner) and my parent/guardian's (required because I am under 18 years old) however the DocuSign interface will only let me sign the same signature in both locations however this is not what is requested by the form, I am not even sure if it is even possible to sign two separate different signatures on the same form using the DocuSign interface. The second issue is that my SSN number is requested on the form but as I'm not from America so I do not have an SSN number, fortunately in the email that I got with the link to sign this form I was told that 'if international, enter all 0 for SSN' so I attempted this but this SSN (000-00-0000) was 'invalid' and would not be accepted by DocuSign, after experimenting I discovered that the each 'segment' of the SSN must have a value greater than 0 for it to be valid and accepted by DocuSign meaning that the SSN 001-01-0001 was accepted but as I am international I have to 'enter all 0 for SSN' but as I've just demonstrated this is 'invalid' so I cannot complete this form for this reason as well. If anyone else could assist on these issues I will be very grateful, thanks, Alex Maund EDIT: after receiving a third reminder to sign the form by autodesk, I have got impatient and submitted the form with the same signature (my parent's) in both places as this is the only option that I can do and there have been no visible signs of progress with the fixing of the mentioned issues in over a week so I hope that the form I have submitted is OK and valid as this is the best I can do. I managed to get the SSN 000-00-0000 accepted when I opened the document used my iPad and the IOS version of DocuSign's website.

Are there any inexpensive ways to make a material flex/contract when an electrical current is applied to it? Answered

I'm working on a small-scale prototype toy and it would be nice to have the ability to apply a charge to a piece of material and have it flex or contract. I kind of see it working a bit like a mechanical solenoid (and that is a possible option here although they would have to be tiny!) in that if the material looks like ____________ to begin with, when you apply a charge to it it becomes like __/\__ (excuse the poor ascii art!)

What's the coolest application for an Autovent?

Autovents are elegant, amazing wax filled pistons that expand when they get warm and contract when they get cold. They are used to automatically open greenhouse windows when they get too hot. Rubber "sand" What to do with it?

They market the stuff for installing around playground equipment. It's shredded tires. I got a load free. I plan to use some for backfill in a spot which was very rough to dig out. But I'll have leftovers. Can I vulcanize it into solid rubber? How?  Mix with concrete to make it lightweight? Or will thermal changes cause rubber to expand /contract too much?   What else could be done w/ it?

Delayed Enlistment Program

No, I'm not hear to recruit.... A friend of mine recently signed Delayed Enlistment paperwork (Army)... The final decision is all him (he's 26 - capable of decision making) - I'd appreciate not having the negative sentiment at the moment (I'd rather not get into the personal story and such). What I would like to know... Does anyone know of specific details to look at on his contract? I know a few vets that have been screwed over in benefits after getting out (especially in the money for school details). I've already found one lovely "gotcha" that locks his GI Bill rates at the time in which he signs - NOT the time in which he is discharged or when he begins to use those funds (the GI bill is what gives vets money for school for those wondering). So does anyone know specific details to look out for? This is a 3+3 DEP contract (3 years active - 3 years army reserve). He's scored very well on all of his tests, and is going in as an E3 rank (he'll be a turbo machinery mechanic).

Did we all sleep through English class?

I mean really!  I know this isn't school, or professional publishing in the comments.  Really I do.  But what's with the runon ramblings?  You all know you have read one (at least).  These people sometimes really have something valuable to say, but they say it all in one ridiculous runon sentence and you can't tell where one thought ends and the next begins and oh by the way I stopped reading it ages ago because I got tired of decoding.  The whole point of posting a comment is because you wanted someone to read it, right?  So be kind to our eyes and make it a little easier, please.  Periods, commas, these are our friends.  Insert them in the spaces you pause for breath when speaking. And a side note: Your- ownership, belonging to you You're- You are, a contraction Their- belonging to them They're- They are, a contraction Things-plural of a thing Thing's-again, ownership, not a plural the only time to use an apostrophe in making plural is if it is an abbreviation, as in the law suit between the two WWF's. I feel better now, thank you.

Spell check and next step button

Two points i've seen: The spell check does not recognize "instructables" as a real word, despite it being used in almost every instructable. It also appears to be having some issues with contractions such as "i've" instead of  "I have". Secondly, the "next step" button is often hidden behind the box with the facebook, embed, flag, etc. in it when there is only a small amount of text on the step. While writing this, another problem appeared in the spell check, as shown in the attached image.

Outdoor Pool Table?

There are lots of used pool tables for sale for under $250. Any ideas for how to convert them for outdoor use? I'm thinking of just spraying the whole thing, except the felt, with a few coats of marine varnish. Then just keeping it covered. I live in the NW and of course it's mostly drizzly around here in the winter time. The big thing is keeping expansion and contraction to a minimum and sealing the wood. This doesn't have to be tournament grade, just something to entertain the kids for a few years.

Remember the autofitting jacket from back to the future two?

My friend and I are building a functional one for our senior engineering project. We've narrowed down the solutions to servos and cables or hydraulics. However, both of these are rather bulky. Any suggestions on what else we could do or more idealy how to shrink these systems? We we're thinking about using muscle fibers to contract a bladder instead of a pump for hydraulics, but that would be expensive and annoyingg to implement.

Solar steam piston?

Right. Still hung up on this whole solar energy thing I've been looking into steam but it all seems: complicated, dangerous, expensive, and all kinds of freakin hassle. I think this is largely because people working in this field now are just trying to plug solar energy into where the fire would normally go, but in many ways light is a lot more versatile, and this might take a complete rethink. So, after twenty minutes of ill-informed and distracted thought, how about this: Two or more pistons, each with a little bit of water or other fluid. Base is thick glass, both attached to a shaft or gear to generate rotation. Concentrated light (like 6 kW worth, or whatever) is shone in through the base of one piston. The fluid vaporises and the piston expands. When it's fully extended the light beam flips over to the other piston. That one starts expanding while the first one starts contracting. you might have some sort of heat sink which is oly applied during the contraction bit. This would be fairly low speed, but should generate a fair bit of torque and would be really really simple. Someone just stole my patent, didn't they?

How can a rocket using liquid hydrogen and oxygen force a rocket upwards?

If hydrogen and oxygen are burned together they produce water.  You need a lot of hydrogen and oxygen to make a very small amount of water. If when burning those two gases together produces water, which takes up much less space, how can it possibly propel a rocket into space. You need expanding gases to force something forward. Hydrogen and oxygen when burned together IMPLODE they do not EXPLODE ! The two gases contract into a liquid they do not expand like conventional combustion of solid fuel !

SAMSUNG GALAXY SII SKYROCKET TROUBLE!!! INFURIATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!

I recently was given a samsung galaxy SII skyrocket that was being used on the AT&T network as a contract phone. I have a pay-as-you-go phone from straight talk wireless, which uses the GSM network on AT&T towers. Because of this, i thought that if i switched my SIM card from my previous phone into the Galaxy SII, it may work and function just like normal, since AT&T usually supports unlocking their phones and i know straight talk supports unlocked phones. To my surprise, and delight, it worked seamlessly for most aspects of the calling/texting portion of features. The only problem i've found is, despite both phones using the same towers and me paying for an unlimited data connection, the Galaxy SII refuses to pick up any kind of data connection or 3G signal. This means i cannot use many features of the phone itself, certain features of applications i have installed, or even get on facebook. however, the most annoying, frustrating, and honestly infuriating problem is; it won't let me send or download picture messages, which i do often!!! Is there any way i can get a data connection with the Galaxy SII without going back to my crappy old phone?????? or having to pay for an AT&T contract?!?!?!?!? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clear vinyl film sticking together

We have a problem with 2 layers of plastic/vinyl film sticking together. When we purchase this product it comes in 48" X 150' rolls and has a kraft paper that separates the layers while on the roll but when we use this stuff we have 2 layers about 3/8" apart after a time due to heat contraction or sitting something on the 2 layers it meets and will not easily pull apart. Is there any chemical or product of any type we can apply that would remove its ability to stick together. If you have a solution please keep in mind there can not be any residue as this needs to stay crystal clear.

nokia 800 - front screen significantly cracked - in full working order - can I use epoxy to mend screen ?

My son's friend 'dropped' his phone. Being quoted upwards of £50 to fix. My husband is wondering whether an epoxy could be used to fill in the cracks - as all is working. It's just the shards on front of screen are at present dangerous - I can testify to that as we took off the cling film we had initially covered it in at the repair shop - put it back in my handbag - and I then ended up with small slivers of glass embedded in my thumb. Nice. It's just such a shame. Was an old contract phone, given as a present to my son - and everything works !! Epoxy seems so easy - but will it ruin the phone?

Can I simply connect them to a digital output and simply close the circuit somehow every time I want it to be on and turn open it when I want ti to be off? Thanks!

Need a designer for a simple down-hole Well survey device project

Greetings, I am looking for design help (paid) for a project I have in mind.  I would like to design a temperature and fluid conductivity (possibly some other parameters, ie pressure) monitoring device for water wells.   The device needs to be small, self powered (battery) and may incorporate data logging capabilities.  I would like the device to use off the shelf  parts like Arduino or some equivalent . The device will need to be designed to fit into a very small water tight and pressure safe housing (60 Atm ~ 800 psi).  I am interested in contracting someone to do the electronic/sensor design and  write any code required, I will design/build the housing to fit.  Look forward to hearing from anyone interested.

Free Wifi for Chromebook

Hello- I'm new to your site. I do have  questions that I believe many of you smart folks can answer. I have an Acer CB5-311 Chromebook which, against all expectations, I dearly love. One thing I don't love is the games certain wifi companies like to play in re to access. For example, my apt. complex has free wifi access. Periodically, the wifi goes "down" just after an unsolicited advert pops up (despite  adblocker) asking if I had interrupted service, and wouldn't I rather buy a service contract with x.....(fill-in the blanks) for such and such price. Of course, it is the same wifi our apt. complex purchased (under a different name). So...is there a hack you know of that can help me circumvent this?

DIY Church, 99% Recycled

I just saw this video on the BBC News site: A man in Spain has spent almost 50 years building a church entirely from scrap, after he was expelled from a monastery after he contracted tuberculosis. Justo Gallego, 85, says the construction in Mejorada del Campo is an "act of faith" but others warn it's a huge folly - and say that the building, which has never had planning permission, could be pulled down. It is an incredible undertaking.  This chap has had a bit of help - mainly from art students, by the sound of things - but most of the work is his alone, and he has taken some clever short-cuts. Who would have thought of building columns by casting concrete in stacked oil drums?  Or of covering a roof by splitting open the drums you carried the materials up in? (Images are screen-grabs from BBC video)

Ok, to start off, If you are wondering why I dont have a gun to demonstrate this concept, its because I just thought of this a few hours ago.So anyways, I have an idea for a pump action concept. This idea would work like thisthe rubberbands would be hooked onto the pump instead of the gun via Y connectors on the pump.when the pump pulls the ram back, the rubberbands do not expand or contractafter the ram goes behind the trigger, the pump is pushed forward, expanding the bands and giving the gun its powerthe pump hooks into a locking mechanismthe trigger is pulled, and either recoil or another mechanism hooked to the trigger unlocks the locking mechanism for the pumpThe advantage of this over other pump action guns would be that the pump would be easy to pull back, no matter how many rubberbands are on the pump.

iPad/Tablets for Disabled with robotic X/y plotter

HI all! I develop tech stuff for people with very significant physical challenges.  The iPad has been a great boon to those disabled persons that can use their fingers/hand to access it.  But this leaves quite a few of the people I work with left out. I wish to create a "plotter", similar to the old CAD/CAM plotters, with the movable X and Y coords that would be adjustable for iPad, and the Androids, Nooks, Kindle, etc.  It could be controlled, by the disabled user, by joystick.  When the destination is reached, they would press a joystick button and a 'pointer' (instead of an ink marker) would tap down on that spot.  I realize that many of these tablets require a capacitive touch and I have found pointers/styli, that seem to get around this somehow, so it's the robotics portion that I don't have experience with. Would anyone be available for contracting to do this? RJ :) rjcooper.com

Is your Bottom made out of Iron? Ever taken a Serious motorbike trip? Daytona? Sturgis? The Big Easy?

Ok, a friend (one of our church members) has asked me to come visit. He's got a contract flying Choppers and Cropdusters for the next two months. We used to eat breakfast together about three times a week when he was in town, and he said if I'll ride up there, he's buying. Problem is, he's 500 miles away. I can't afford to drive the Tahoe, and I don't trust my crackerbox (18 year old Mazda). I think I'm going to take the Goldwing. I've never really ridden more than about 200 miles in a day, but I'll only have about 3 days to make this voyage (1000 miles round trip). What do you think? Is it do-able for a sleep deprived, rapidly-aging, and slightly-overweight desk-jockey?

RF transmitted power Legality / Codes. Answered

I'd like to power some LED devices "remotely" using transmitted power. I've seen there are Instructables related to this www.instructables.com/id/Wireless-Power/ www.instructables.com/id/Wireless-Power-Transmission-Over-Short-Distances-U/ I'd like to create a power source that could energize a small LED circuit at a maximum distance of ~3 meters.  Even better, build an adaptive control, ensuring additional circuits are adequately powered, but design-limited to a safety max. My concern is to ensure the power source conforms to applicable United States regulations / codes.  I have a background in physics, but no experience in electrical engineering or contracting.  So I really don't know where to begin translating theory into device.  Can anyone suggest advice / guidance / starting references : What is the legality in the United states? Are there any codes that apply / regulate transmitted power? Pro tips? Muchas gracias for guidance and suggestions! CarLoz

New Online Marketplace for Disabled Crafters

There is a new online marketplace which contracts with disabled individuals to sell their high quality, homemade crafts on his/her behalf.  Please stop by http://www.craftedelegance.org I am disabled due to a chronic illness and have been unable to find an employer to hire me to work from home, so I created this online marketplace to sell my glycerin soap and opened it up to other disabled crafters as well.  I take care of the business aspect of selling your crafts and your only worry is to make your crafts and ship them directly to the customer when you are notified someone has bought your product.  Be sure to stop by our forum and read our blog as well.  Our forum has two levels to it...one for the general public and one for the crafters.  It is a way for us to support each other in our everyday struggles with our individual chronic illnesses or physical impairments.
