Cooking contest

Drinkmorecoffee's instructable on cooking got me thinking... I think that our next mini contest should be a cooking contest. The rules being that you make something you've never made before, but without using a recipe. So instead of getting a pomodoro sauce recipe online, you make it yourself, using what you think it needs, and then make an instructable on how to make it. Of course you can use the basic sponge recipe like drinkmorecoffee provides, but from there you make it your own. What do you think?Well, the contest is up:Have Fun!

"techniques" section in cooking?

Hey! I just posted an instructable on red foods, and I had a little trouble figuring out how to categorize it. I think that the cooking section could use a techniques category. If someone wanted to post an instructable about how to descale a fish or cut an onion, right now they'd have to decide if that was a main course, salad or sandwich. General cooking techniques are what I get the most requests for when I teach cooking. I think that more technique-based instructables would be a huge asset to the community! Cheers, Renee

So, instead of making you guys check back to the group every so often, I'm making this topic to post any contest updates. This way, as long as you check the forums every so often you will see when there is a change to rules or whatnot.

Why waste all that heat out your tailpipe when you can cook a burger with it? We've seen an instructable on how to [https://www.instructables.com/id/Cooking...-with-your-car/ cook with your car], but this concept shows a simple device for grilling on the go.It looks like it's still just an idea, but where else can we harness energy that would otherwise just heat up the air? link

Flavorful cooking with habanero peppers? Answered

I really like the flavor of habanero and have used various store-bought sauces in cooking. I'd like to try using habanero peppers in cooking, so I recently tried a raw habanero. The flavor was great, but the heat was overpowering. Is there something that can be added to raw habanero to bring out its flavor, but dilute its heat?

Night time Solar cooking

How would you like to cook with Solar power...after the sun went down?  It looks like MIT is on to something for the next step in Green tech. I found this idea very inspiring and it really makes the mind think of other uses beside just cooking after dark with the Sun. Think about useing this as a home heating device or water heater.  We could get millions of people off the electric grid with this type of invention if scaled up or engineered for the right useage. Any other ideas out there folks?

Can you cook instant noodles with hot water?

Can you cook instant ramen with hot water? Not the instant cup ones, but the instant pack ones, the one that you usually have to cook. What I mean by "with hot water" is cooking that pack noodles (where you usually have to cook) like a cup instant noodles.

Tasteless, textureless chocolate chip cookies, EVERY first batch I make? Answered

For the last 3 times I have tried making chocolate chip cookies, the first round that I slide in the oven has come out completely tasteless and textureless. No light buttery taste, no vanilla taste, not even a vaguely burnt taste. And they aren't crispy or chewy either. They're definitely cooked all the way through, and I follow the recipes exactly. The 2nd batch normally turns out slightly better, but I couldn't tell you why. I am a rather bad cook, but that doesn't explain why all the cookies suck. :P To quote one of my friends, "This will haunt me for the rest of my life. I don't know how to even describe this cookie, as there is nothing to describe about it." My mother once made a vague comment about the temperature of the oven, but I'm still not sure how to fix it. It's probably not the recipe; I've used several different ones that are all fairly standard and similar.

Arghh! Eggs!

Today was a great day in school! I came home craving hard boiled eggs, so I take 4 eggs from a container that I thought was fairly old (5 days or so). Turns out they were fresh. Now my eggs are impossible to completely peel, albeit being good inside. Is there a good way to remove all of the shell? Is there anything I can do with these eggs (that is, a recipe)?I really to see 3 good eggs go to waste. Does anyone know what to do?Thanks,Bran.

Machine to mix and cook at the same time?

Hi everyone. Can anyone suggest how to safely customise a heavy duty food mixer (I have a Kitchenaid) to allow a heat source to be placed underneath? I basically need to mix and cook at the same time. There are various low-powered electric stirrers (I’ve tried using a Stirio) for domestic use, but then there seems to be nothing commercially available in-between that and huge industrial machines. Any suggestions very gratefully received. Thanks Michael

How to Cook Tomahawk Ribeyes Steak

i'm gonna start off with a reverse sear and cook these indirect at 250 degrees until the steaks reach an internal temperature of between 110 and 115 degrees. After 45 minutes at 250 degrees, our steaks have an internal temperature of an 115 degrees now I'm gonna remove them and let them rest while I crank up the heat to about 600degrees. And now for the sear I'm gonna sear these for about 5 minutes per side until they reach an internal temperature of a 135 degrees. Now after a 10-minute rest that will give us a medium finish. After about 2 and a half minutes, I'm gonna give them a quarter turn for the nice hash marks. Now after 5 minutes I'm gonna give them a flip for 5 minutes on the other side. And there you have it Prime and Aged for 6 weeks Tomahawk Ribeyes. I have never had a steak this good the flavor and the tenderness and the richness is absolutely amazing! One of the best steaks I'll ever have! Thank you guys very much for watching. Learn From Video https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Cook-a-Tomahawk-Ribeye-Steak/

Idea for a new cooking contest/challenge!

Creative Leftovers Challenge! 1) Create 1 meal as your base.  Has to be at least a main course and 1 side that will last through the whole challenge (Example - Steak, salad, and baked potatoes counts as a main course w/ 2 sides) 2) Create at least 1 way of using up the leftovers WITHOUT having the exact same thing each night and using as much of the original meal for 2 dinners (Example - Steak tacos (uses 1/2 steak and all of salad) and mashed potatoes (uses all baked potatoes w/ extra) for Leftover Dinner 1.  Chopped steak (uses last of steak) w/ gravy or sour cream over potato cakes (uses the last of the mashed potatoes) for Leftover Dinner 2) 3) All 3 meals must be posted together in a single step-by-step Instructable w/ each meal being 1 step.  Most creative/wild of the edible entries wins! It's just a thought...

Is lighter flame/smoke/fume toxic?

I was going to make an instructable on mini roasting when something hit me. When you use the lighter to light maybe a marshmellow, is the fire or smoke or fumes from the fire toxic? I mean the gas/alcohol gets neutrilized when it burns up and turns into flame but If i cook with it, it may be a different question. If someone asks me to think about smokes, the I should say to you that smokes are already toxic and anyone smoking shouldn't care. ( I don't smoke, I want to live) If possible you can answer this question and have credit in my next instructable.

Just curious... Does Instructables have a 'best of' cookbook??

We seem to have a giant collection of some very 'tasty' recipes on here. Wouldn't it be great to have them in a cookbook-like form, categorized. Even a quick cookbook vs traditional cook-time book. The instructables format even gives the novice cook an almost foolproof set of instructions which would make it soooo easy for someone to impress their guests.

What's your favorite piece of cooking hardware?

Just wondering if anybody out there has one, "couldn't live without" piece of cooking hardware. A favorite gadget or tool that you just couldn't live without. Mine is actually my cast iron skillet I got for my 20th birthday along with a copy of Alton Brown's "I'm Just Here for the Food". I swear I have cooked pretty much every single kind of dish, from breakfast to dessert. I use it at least 5 times a week, and that would probably be a conservative estimate. Anyway, I'd love to hear what kitchen treasures anybody has out there.

Top plants for home garden to be used in cooking? Answered

I was curious about what are some of the best plants for my backyard garden. I want to be able to use these plants in my cooking. So far I know that strawberries and tomatoes and cilantro are going in. Maybe some common herbs will add to the variety. I am a southern California residence and the area is shaded by two palm trees. The temperature range is very mild with few extremes and the soil is of mediocre quality. I just need some direction as to what else is available and what I would most commonly need for my cooking. Thank you,
