HOW TO BYPASS COPYRIGHT ON VHS TO RECORD TO DVD?

I got a vhs to dvd recorder and trying to convert vhs tape to dvd but some of the tapes have some type of copyright protection and will not allow to be copied is there a mod or device that a can use to bypass the copyright. I am just coping these for own use.

Rising Prices! What are you doing to cope?

Wow! Prices are on the rise, and RAPIDLY! $4.00 A gallon gas, here in the good ole U.S. of A. Have you been to the grocery store lately? I haven't, my heart cant stand the strain. When my wife tells me grocery-price horror stories, I have to make her stop so I can take my blood-pressure meds. I've always been frugal, maybe even tightfisted. I'd just like to build up something I'd be proud to leave my kids and grandkids some day. (Note to Skunkson: No grandkids for at least 10 years!) Sacrificing comfort in the interest of a better future is a noble cause. But the current economy is squeezin' this poor boy to death! I am: A) Trying to get a job closer to home. B) Parking the SUV. C) Driving the crappy, egg-shell, crackerbox economy car (and the Harley to soothe my male ego). D) Adjusting the thermostat. E) Doing more with the garden and the chickens. F) Rationing my beloved Coca-Cola. So what are you doing to cope with the raising cost of getting by? Real suggestions would be best, but humour wouldn't hurt, as the only thing I've laughed/cried at lately is my plummeting bank account.

Need Help in Choosing a Microphone?

I am a  conference speaker that needs to have his own microphone. Had to cope with crappy mics, I need a recommendation for a good wireless microphone ( handheld and lavalier combo). Am  looking at Shure BLX 1288/CVL. Need advice and recommendation.

I am working on a project and saw this tool used in the instructable. It was used to cut wood (I'm using acrylic) but the author did not say what this hand tool is. I want to find one either in-store or online but I don't know what it would be called. It looks like some kind of coping saw but the blade looks different.

Regarding Sticker/Decal Adhesive and removal.

I need to make a decal/sticker that will withstand heat, sweat and humidity as well as remove easily from plastic without damaging the case. What is the best type of adhesive and/ore decal paper that copes well with the conditions stated above? I'm working on a project that I wish to remain discreet about.

Dead Lawn--Fix Ph under evergreen trees.

Coniferous trees (pines, etc) acidify soil under em. Lawn doesn't cope wit this too well. Dump your old boxes of baking soda from freezer/fridge under pine tree. It works. Grass grows better. I'd do an -ible, but didn't bother to take pics. If you try it, maybe take before + after pics and post an -ible.

Tech Deck Skate Park (WIP)

I've recently started to build a tech deck skate park. The base is mdf (solid stuff, very heavy), and all the features will be made from wood with metal coping. The base is 36"x16" to fit on my desk. Also if you need any closeups of anything, I've got it saved in CAD and can post any screenshots you guys want. Also, here are a few questions I have for you guys: -The flat rails were easy because they were handles, but how could I make the rail on the stair set? -How should I cut the profiles (out of 1/2" plywood) that will be the shape of the quarter pipe? I need to accurately cut that radius, but I only have a crappy band saw, 1" belt sander, drill press, dremel, and various hand tools.

What media tool can I use to save Instructables to disc to share with friends w/o internet service?

I recently become involved in helping people "On The Other Side Of The Digital Divide" homeless, immigrants, migrants & economically displaced people that want to stay in touch with technology & learn Marker Skills to cope with life. I've tried ant.com & flash video recorders, but I can't capture the images. If I could burn disc folks could watch them on portable players etc.

running vacuum tube filaments on dc and getting 10 volts from 2 5 volt wires from a atx? Answered

I am going to run a 10 volt filament on the +5 volt and +5 volt to get a combined power of 10 volts. First of all will running the filament on dc hurt it? Also the tube takes 10 amps, so will the +5 and +5 power supply be able to cope with it? ( it is a atx power supply) also how do you wire 2 +5 volt wires with a common ground to get 10 volts

WRONG WRONG WRONG adverts

Ok, now, is it just me, or has the 'standard' of adverts gone down on this site? I don't mind the adverts that relate to the page topic, sometimes there useful, i can even cope with the spinning flashing gifs. But, this NSFW advert, is not good. Its not fun when checking out ibles at work, to get this thrown up on your screen. Also, its not much of a 'family' site with naked people. I am aware that -ibles remains free because of the adverts, and id rather put up with nsfw adverts than loose it alltogether, but is there not a way of 'choosing' the adverts a bit more selectivley?

Where to go from the (ELECTRONICS CLASS)

Dear All,I have finished the electronics class and would like to know if there is a planned lessons like this one to take me through the rest of the electronics study. because I can make simple circuits by coping what the components and I know how to use Arduino very well . I would like to know how can I decide which components to use or how may. And to know about drawing the circus and making it to PCB. I tried to search by topic and I got lost. I was going to ask are you caught in the blackouts I'm seeing on the news? Dopey question. Any advice for a packrat?

Step 1: Admit you have a problem.Yep, I have way too much junk.Books, magazines, old computers (some really old), salvaged stuff, furniture we didn't use after a remodeling, tools, parts saved for 'future projects,' camping stuff (how many backpacks do I really need?), old skis, clothing, etc.It's getting bad. Last week I bought a new airbrush, 'cause I couldn't find the other two I already own. And that's certainly not the first tool that's a duplicate.Both our parents (the wife's and my) were the same. My sister and brother-in-law get rid of everything to cope. But they over-compensate-- there's hardly a book or a magazine in their home (so spotless it's creepy.)Any advice? Any former 'packrats?' If so, how did you "get clean?"

Pain is a learning curve

Ok, I just made some hot chocolate, the usual 90 seconds in a microwave, narrow mug, powder and soy milk with a sprinkle of nutmeg..... drank it felt no different......but it appears that apparently it was too hot without me even realising it, and I should know because I drink hot chocolate with a spoon. My lips, roof of my mouth, gums and tounge are swelling sore and blistering. Great! Do you know what the best cure is? Whiskey, I'm sat in the living room drinking whiskey to cool the burns in my mouth, it doesnt hurt so much now but my god my lips are swelling like a mongoose fish. Who needs botocs? I have alot of food allergies too which doesn't help. Do any of you guys have food allergies and how do you cope with them, tips appreciated :)

muffin/bake shop style muffin tops?

Does anyone have a recipe or the secret for baking the big muffins you buy with the big rounded cracked tops? I've searched the web but it seems to be a closely guarded secret. Maybe someone out there has worked in a muffin shop or bakery and could share their expertise. If you're worried about blowing the whistle I can assure you that I do not want to make a profit and am not planning to open my own bakery. I just have a weakness for those muffins and i'm a single mother who can't afford to treat myself to such an extravagance every day. I would greatly appreciate it as I can no longer cope with the feelings of guilt knowing I should be saving that money for my sweet little daughter :( . I would be forever grateful :)

Why my servo doesn´t work?

Hi, I have tried this project :https://www.instructables.com/id/Control-Servo-Wit... , about controlling servo with headphone´s jack, I just bought 2 servos TowerPro SG90 and when I tried both, none worked. Firstly I tried it with a 3,7V battery, then with a USB (5V), later with a 5.2V battery and finally I put the same as the tutorial (9V) but it didn´t work. I tried with the audios provided in the tutorial and I did new ones with audacity, with 1000hz frec 1ms duration (clockwise) and 500hz 2ms duration(counterclockwise), coping and paste every 20ms until completing 2 sec, but it didnt do anything. I want to know if I am doing something wrong or the servos are just broken (newly purchased).I edit, I just realized that if I apply 5V on the signal wire, it moves, is that because it is broken?Thanks for the help!

ink jet printer to cutter?

Ive got an ink jet printer that bust on me a few days ago, and ive always wonered if it would be possible to replace the ink cartrages with a cutting blade and use it as a vinyl/cardboard/anything else you can think of cutter. my school had a vinyl cutter which i used a lot, but i dont have access to that any more. the only problems i can see are things like "how can i get the blade to come off the paper between letters etc? how would it cope with changes in direction? could it be programmed to follow a line instead of the side to side action?" if this wouldnt work, anyone got any other ideas for a cocked up ink jet printer? shame to waste it. attach a laser?? lol. a really budget laser cutter. could the motors and rails be used for anything else? its got a scanner attached too, but i cant think of a use for that, other than turning it into a SAD lamp (seasonal affected disorder). i think it would be bright enough. ideas?

I'm speaking in Westminster Abbey...

Well I've just heard that I'm one of 20 young people in the whole of the Uk going to westminster to speak and be consulted about child services and bereavement, on 6th of may I go over to speak, damn this is cool I will have a say in something... Out of the group that was asked for candidates four of us were chosen from our recent video project work, I was selected because I apparently have good ideas and am skilled at arguing points and expressing my self sensibly... Woot skills...The whole thing is about improving child services around the UK and I've got to say it's about time... There are very few decent social workers and the system is pretty bad on the whole, minimizing the effect of decent social workers and the like, counsellors are soon going to be boning up on dealing with bereaved kids due to our video project along with teachers and if the funding goes through we may be doing another on helping friends or ourselves... Any suggestions from the UK people here in following withA friend in need is a friend indeed Coping with it?

How do I calculate an LED power supply? Answered

 Okay, I don't know a lot about LED's but here's what I've done so far. I bought some 12v LED strips and used them to surround a display in my shop. I soldered all the strips together and attached my bench supply.  The LED's seem pretty forgiving and I can run them at a reasonable brightness at anything between 8.3 and 12 volts. 8.3 volts draws 0.065 amps and 12 volts draws 0.65 volts. I have no idea why it seems to draw less current at a lower voltage, unless my ammeter is faulty on my PSU. I am now wanting to attach a power adapter. I have a 12v 500mA supply but am worried it won't cope. I also have a 12v 1.25 amp supply but am guessing this may up the voltage and burn out the LED's. Do I really need to buy a 12v LED driver or can I get away with a cheap non-switching adapter?  And if so do I need to go for something like a 12V 650mA? Thanks Simon

Help converting a plug timer to a panning motor

Hi there everyone, I want to get started with timelapse photography, but buying expensive gear is not an option - an DIY'ing is fun :) I want to use my TI-89 calculator to help out with the intervalometer job, and I've ordered a fitting cable, and will be programming the stuff when it arrives. So far, so good. In addition to that I want to add some panning action. For the purpose of automating that part I found a plug timer (correct term?) lying around. I disassembled it, wanting to find a way to mount my tripod head or some other camera mount (like a 1/4" 20 thread). Anyways - the middle part with the Philips-logo is not moving while in action, while the spinning clockface around it is very thin. The size, though, fits my Manfrotto tripod head perfect, even though it's heavy as shit - and with a camera on, it's even worse :) Well - I need some tips for constructing this bad boy - how to go about it, what to do, and what not to do :) Anything is welcome. Attached is a hell of lot of pictures. Oh - and any suggestions for coping with morning dew, if the camera has to stay outside for 3-4 hours during timelapse? :) Thanks a bunch, F

An idle thought on career diversification.

As you may know, I teach Science.You may have noticed that I occasionally venture an opinion on science-related topics.You may also have noticed that bad science, and the acceptance of anti-science tend to get on my nerves.Part of the problem, of course, is the meeja - the majority of journalists have little or no science training, so they focus on the dramatic sound-bites when reporting stuff. Heck, these days the majority of journalists aren't even journalists - they're bloggers.After the massive fuss I had to put up with at school over the LHC (destroying the world by sucking it into an exploding black hole then turning time backwards), I tried to find out where the kids got their panicky ideas from, and it turned out to be the tabloid press (the Star and the Sun, for UK readers).Now, I could wait until the papers publish their bad headlines and write an annoyed letter, or I could be pro-active.Do any of you guys think there is any mileage in setting myself up as a consulting service to the scientifically-illiterate news media?I thought, maybe, offering "expert opinions" on scientific events to newspapers that don't have scientists on staff, or maybe a translation service, turning scientific papers and press-releases into something journalists can cope with.Comments?EDITI have emailed the main local newspapers, plus the BBC.Let's see...

Lead-acid 12V-DC to 5V-DC for ATmega328 (SAFELY)

Hi all! I am currently designing a simple electronic device which uses Arduino-software. It needs to be connected to a car (Lead-Acid) battery of 12V and be stepped down to 5V for my ATmega328 to be powered. I read that I must use a "Standard 7805 5V regulator" for this. My question is, will it be able to cope with the heat? Must I put a heat-sink on it and/or is the regulator even "big" enough for this? I figured that using two regulators in parallel, might halve the current and help prevent over-heating. (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/107) Another thing is, how could I go ahead and setup a small NiMH battery charger for this device which works like this: It runs of the car battery at all times and keeps the backup NiMH battery fully charged - as soon as the car battery gets disconnected, it switches over to the NiMH cells. (I will be using 4 of these for my backup-battery-pack http://www.sparkfun.com/products/335) See my attached schematic of what I have in mind, please tell me what you think about it. I have too little knowledge of electronics to solve this problem myself, but if you can point me in the right direction at least, I will try and figure it out from there. Thank you for your time!

Pre-purchase questions of a petrol-driven electrical generator - cos you guys know best! Thanks!

I have a caravan in a remote location and I've got round to thinking of buying a petrol-driven electrical generator. I'm figuring on using this with an ethanol (E85) fuel. I'd really appreciate some help if you can to any parts of my queries. I have looked around on Google for advice but there's a lot of conflicting stuff as usual and I know you guys are good. My normal max load is around 4,500watts but I have security HID lights which have a huge inductive start for a few millseconds - how will a suitably rated generator cope? Do I always add a 20% margin to the generator capacity so for a 4.5kW load I should get a 6kW machine? Or is it not 20%? Given that the machine will be outside, I don't want to annoy the other caravanners, so if I build a sound-proofing box with just an outlet for the exhaust, could I expect the noise to be reduced signifcantly, given a lot of noise will be coming from the exhaust itself? The machine has a tank of 15litres but I want to increase this safely - how could this be done, if at all? Safety is paramount (naturally) but then so is convenience. Do you have a generator? If so, what do you wish you knew beforehand or any regrets? What kind of maintenance schedule is there and is there a performace improvement for modding the air-intake to a larger filter like for cars and bikes? How do I power a spectrum analyser?

I want to make an audio spectrum analyser using 8 lm3915 IC chips and 4 TL072 chips with a TL071 amp for the TL072 chips. The TL072 chips will be wired into bandpass filters of different frequencies, which will output into the individual LM3915 chips. These ICs will be wired as VU meters. The outputs will be these LEDs: http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/5mm-Round-Diffused-LEDs-with-Integral-Resistor-518908 I would also like to add a feature of adding a feature where when the ambient light is lowered, more lights turn on using another LM3915 chip. Another feature I would like to add is an amplifier and I want the spectrum analyser to respond to background music via a microphone and a pre-amp. Make Cement From Scratch? Answered

I have spent a great deal of time working on this question yet, I have no solid answer to go on.  I tend to enjoy acquiring a skill set which would be very useful come TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it).  I am far from a prepper, however I still entertain a slight possibility and see no problem with learning how to do a little more than cope. These skills extend from knowing where to grow, gather, and how to store penicillin to simple things like a yeast starter 100% from scratch.  Brewing and distilling are also handy because it makes a great trade item.  These are all things you never see in the Walking Dead or any other TEOTWAWKI cinema.  One of the more important skills I believe would be conjuring fortress walls from rocks in the form of a little thing we know as concrete which we all take for granted.  Now I could mix portland cement and filler with some water all day long and make a pretty cool fortess, but seriously.  All the home depots in my state wouldn't have enough quick rite for that.  So today I wan't to know what general rocks and minerals (that you can find in nature) can you combine to make cement.  I know there are all kinds of fancy names for these, but what I really need is some good old generalities.  Tell me to go outside grab a handful of clayish dirt, but it in a kiln with some lime and grind it up.  I'm not looking for top of the line stuff here, this just needs to be able to hold a general form for a few years and be a little bullet resistant.  This is for a crude fort, not the tallest building in the world or the hoover dam.  A simple mortar would also be nice, although there really aren't any stones around to put together, bricks aren't super hard to make with as much clay as we have in our soil. So join me and maybe I will put together an instructible on all the skills you actually need but don't have!

What would be the VERY BEST way for me to TRANSITION into my newly adopted off-grid, survivalist, subsistence lifestyle? Answered

A 16'x16'x16', 256-square foot, A-frame cabin on an elevated 3' concrete paver floating DekBlock foundation with a 3'x 6'8" front flush door, one rear 48"x 48"horizontal slider window, and another upper 24"x 24" horizontal slider window for the sleeping loft.I'm thinking that one of those standard U.S. Stove designs might provide just a little too much heat for my needs up in the Copper River Basin region of ALASKA's rural backcountry. Who knows? What are your suggestions for the above described "habitat"? Where can I find the best deals for my 256-square foot space? (Heating/ventilation-wise, we're speaking of subzero temperatures and heavy snowfall, so, I don't believe that "opening a window" is a practical solution for me if it gets too hot and smokey inside my A-frame.) The dirty little secrets about switching to LED lights

Some years ago we were told to invest in more energy efficient lights for our homes.Incandescent was using too much power, so CFL's, Compact Flouroscent Lights were the ting to buy.Much higher price than the normal lightbulb but hey we save a lot of money in the long run.No one liked the long warm up time to get full brightness...And even less people actually got the claimed lifespan out of them.Add the recycling costs and hazardous waste created and the costs of using CFL's is actually much higher than standard light bulbs.The only savings were for the power companies.LED lights had a slow start but once mass production started price went downhill fast.What started in the EU was made compulsory in other countries soon after: A ban on incandescent light bulbs.Thee are only a few exceptions left like bulbs for your oven as LED's won't cope with the temps here.So why was the ban necessary?An incandescent light bulb was available for often under a buck, so having some spares at home was no issue at all.Making people switch to LED lights that often cost 20 times the amount of an old standard light is impossible.Biggest incentive of course was the short boom to the local economy as the initial batches were all sold as high quality items.The scam started to evolve when it became clear that even with LED lights the overall savings hugely depends on how you use your lights.As a factor on your electricity bill the lights are usually at the bottom of the list.Things like heaters, airconditioners, fridges, freezers and of course TV's are the main users of electricity in many houses.During the winter times this changes as we need more light but still the impact is not as high as you might think.What did change though was the behaviour.Since we now save so much energy we don't really worry as much if the light is kept on for no good reasons.Again, the main savings are with the electricity providers.I won't deny though that a house with 100 60W incandescent lighs will have some benfit on the electricity when switching to 8 or 10W LED lights....Lifespan...Like so many others I have some stories about incandescent lights...For example the one had in the basement when I was a kid.Often on for several hours, sometimes just for a few seconds to quickly grab something.But it still worked fine when I was an adut and never had to be replaced.Or the house that destroyed lights on a regular base thanks to power surges from the nearby industrial areas.LED light were meant to make the difference here.Put them in and never worry about replacing.10.000 or more hours before the LED's fail...Nice claims but never fully true.10.000 is a bit over a year of constant use.Most people won't just leave the lights on for the entire year.So you would expect that a good LED light will work just fine for at least 5 years, under normal conditions close to 10 maybe.There is several problems with this claim - none of them are explained in the warranty leaflet and nothing was explained by your government when you were forced onto LED light.Electronics even as simple as a resistor come with a limited warranty.Some will remember the disaster when bad capacitors turned thausands of flat screen TV's into flashing lightbulbs.The parts used to make the lights can be a year old already before they are soldered together.Then there is time for shipping, storage, distribution.Sadly not all countries require to print the manufacturing date on the packing or LED light.Means that by the time you put a new LED light bulb into use it might be two years old already.Similar for the claim that the light won't emit heat.Sure the LED light itself is cold but the heatsink the LED's are mounted on is far from it, same for the often underrated electronics inside.In return the electronics suffer from the excessive heat, espcially if mounted in lamps not designed for them.Which makes the entire replacement a scam for most people.It is not uncommon that a LED light fails within a few months.If you are lucky to have kept the invoice for it you might be able to get a new one from your store.Now I replaced 20 lights when I moved in here.Only the first three that failed got replaced, after that the shop claimed I would misuse the warranty.I inspected them and it was not easy to get inside.The switching IC used should have had a heatsink according to the datasheet, without it the circuit board got toasted until the IC finally cracked.Without a sufficient heatsink the IC was only rated for a max of 5W while the light had a LED assembly of 15W...I kept doing these destructive examinations whenever a LED light fails.So far they ALL had sure signs of overheating, either for the switching IC or the tiny transformer.No one really bothers though to keep track of the hours a light was actually used and with that we just keep buying new ones with no worries in the world.Recycling....An incandescent light was never really worth much to begin with, so the final grave was the normal rubbish bin.CFL's required proper disposal due to the hazardous materials in the tubes.A comparison between the amount of sold lights and what ended up in recycling centers reveiled that the ,ajority of them ended in landfill because people tossed them in the normal rubbish.The long term impact of those chemicals on the enviroment will be hidden under fresh grass by then.LED's claimed to be the way out as they were meant to be fully recycleable.What really happend with our collected recycling bins was clear when China stopped taking it.....Means all the still usefull materials in those expensice lights again just go into landfill.A total waste on so many levels.So what is the real cost then?Electricity prices are only going up, so saving Watts wherever possible is a good thing.But ask yourself:How much energy and ressources were required to produce an incandescent light bulb?How much more is required to produce a LED light?We are told to focus on our electricity bill alone without considering the overall costs.Since we already pay the extra of making them we tend to forget what happens once they fail.More waste, more landfill, no recycling of the lights at all.But does it prevent your next blackout when the grid is at max capacity? Nope...Keeping your big airconditioner off for a hot day or two would save more electricity for the year than changing from incandescent lights to LED's ;) Does that mean we get way more efficient airconditioners? Nope...Where in developing countries cheap and highly efficient compressors are used we invented inverter technology ROFLMakes no difference at all on max power to have an inverter.The only real difference is that it runs slower at lower capacity while a normal airconditioner turns the compressor on and off.Forcing the use of highly efficient compressor technologies and replacing our old style systems would have made a real difference on the overall electricity use.We "save" electricity with LED lights and only turn them on if we really need them.Still the 5 or 7kW airconditioner runs all summer long and in the winter it heats the house and uses even more electricity.Makes you wonder, doesn't it? ;)

Universal ultrasonic driver circuit - help required

I would like to build a few, properly working, ultrasonic devices.For example an ultrasonic soldering iron and an ultrasonic soldering bath.But some small ultrasonic plastic welder or cutter is nice too :)If you ever had one of the above to play with you know why they are great to have.The development story so far:I managed to destroy several driver boards.The ones you find for cheap with 28 or40kHz transducers in your favourite online store.In the beginning I knew I will have a need to repair or replace these boards but no clue why.Take an ultrasonic cleaner and read the manual.There it is always pointed out that a low water level can destroy your toy.What does that exactly mean?The transducer needs to be kept in resonance, if the water level is too low or something havy sits right at the bottom of the tank the frequency drifts off too much.Very expensive untis can cope a bit better here, which gave me the idea for the universal driver.During my experiments with hoorns I noticed that it is very hard to get usable results without extensive computer simulations first.Just one mm too long or too short and literally nothing happens, go a bit further and a thin aluminium horn might start to crack under the stress.And in all these cases the driver overloads, in one cheap case to the point that the transducer fused together.Trying to examine these driver circuits while they operate turned out to be a total nightmare!Place the probe from the ocsilloscope literally anywhere and the thing goes out of tune already.By the way: Never coil up the wires going to your transducer.....Only way I found that somehow works is by adding a tiny transformer around the wire going to the transducer and to measure the voltage generated there.To make it short: Destructive testing provided the requirements a driver needs to match to keep the cost low.Reasons for the premature death of cheap driver boards:Almost all of these cheap drivers I could find generate the 28 or 40kHz signal from the mains voltage.Means it goes through a transformer to get the desired 50-80V and some witchcraft turns that into a more or less smooth DC voltage.This is then switched by some beefy transistors, mosfets or similar, depending on the circuit.The actual feedback happens with a tiny ring toroid, similar to what you use to drive a ZVS system.With this dirt simple design a fully tuned transducer - like when nothing is attached to it yet - would cause the driver to provide a voltage of about 6x of what the transducer is rated for.Thankfully in most cases the transducer survives this a couple of times while the transistors fry within about 3 seconds no matter how good the cooling.Slightly out of tune - like when mounted onto a cleaning tank - the resonant frequency is slightly off the tuned 28 or 40kHz.The driver compensates this through the tiny feedback transformer.But this only goes for a about 1-4kHz, drift away further and first the power drops, then the voltage spikes and it dies.The feedback is not able to shift the generated frequency enough as it is ultimately derived from the mains frequency of your grid.Reasons why a dedicated, low cost driver would open new possibilities:Imagine you need to make a horn or sonotrode for your transducer.Knowing that each half of it should be equal to a quarter wavelength of the operating frequency is nice and easy.But if you add something like a blade for cutting or you need some pressure for welding then calculated dimensions become useless.Programs to fully simulate complex sonotrode designs, especially if you need to add screws or blades are costly and out of reach for most of us.Even if you would have access you still need to know the material properties to know the speed of sound in the material and how much it can flex in various directions without being subjected to metal fatigue.For basically all hobby needs in terms of ultrasonic gadgets we are happy with a simple push pull motion.the same motion our transducer offers by default.And when it comes to attachments it turned out that quite stubby horns of light weight are a good compromise already.A 50-50 ratio of diameter and length works reasonably well in most cases.For example the standard 40kHz transducer of 45mm diameter is quite happy to work with a horn like this:45mm diameter on the thick end, 20mm diameter on the tin end.Thick part 40mm long, thin part 42mm long.The extra 2mm are for the manual tuning by filing or sanding it off until there is good cavitation happening when you put the end into water.This however is only good for simple testing purposes and some fun but as soon as you attach blades or a small pot with about 200grams of molten solder the tuning is way off and destroys the driver quickly.To be able to deal with different pressure levels on the working end or just a different mass that is attached the driver needs to "know" the new self resonant frequency.Basic idea for a dedicated driver:Please bare with me on this one as my developing days got severly neglected once I moved to the other side of the globe....Input should from a 12V power supply, preferably a PSU to keep costs and sourcing time low.The operating voltage for the transducer shall come from a simple switch mode supply.I was thinking of scrapping a PSU for the transformer and switching transistor.This however would provide about 120-160V on 240V mains with the transformer of a PSU.To match the required load changes it would be great to drive this first transformer by PWM means to regulate the output voltage with a potentiometer while keeping it steady within the set values.Basically like every cheap phone charger but with an output voltage that can be adjusted and kept regulated.The switching transistors for the transducer should be well over the required specs of an out of tune transducer.I guess capable of switching 600V should be sufficient.Main design change to the cheap driver boards would be the feedback.A hall effect sensor could provide the proportional voltage to the current going into the transducer.It would also provide the real operating frequency of the transducer for the feedback loop.The resulting real resonant frequency of the running system is then used to drive the switching transistors.As a result the transducer would always be driven at the exact right frequency no matter the load on the working end.These transducers still have a quite limited frequncy range due to the fixed counterweight on the back - it is optimised to be self resonant without the transducer being mounted.To explain this feature let me use a spring with a weight on it....You can move your hand up and down to make the weight swing up an down with the spring force.You can also push the weight to get the same effect.But if the weight would just expand and contract there would be no change in the spring force or position or the weight.Our transducer however is mounted to something and the weight on the back is heavier than what is on the front end of the transducer.As a result the weight is pushed back and forth and because all is fixed together this movement is transfered to for example your cleaning bowl.Without anything attached to the transducer it would literally start to rip itself apart until either the bolt or the ceramics fail.The feedback loop needs to prevent this by adjusting the switching voltage going to the transducer.Once too far out the system needs to shut off until it can reset.The frequency control is not that fragile.With the power controlled through the feedback even a wide drift in the operating frequency of about 5kHz would only reduce the effectiveness and amplitude of the moving horn/sonotrode.Sadly my skill set in circuits is not that good anymore to have the required parts in my head and to know how to combine them properly :(Why this concept is only really good for really basic applications:Professional solutions utlise often less than 20W of ultrasonic power for a soldering iron or scaler.For these devices the sonotrode/horn is spefically designed for the task at hand.Same goes for any possible attachments - without them these things don't do much at all.Finding these low power ceramic transducer rings for a good price is hard enough, making an amplifying horn even harder.But when using these quite big 50 or 100W transducers we find for cheap online we can compensate the lower amplitude with the added power of the transducer.Since we only need surface action but won't have to go through a few liters of liquid it might even be beneficial.Fun fact: A 40kHz transducer has the second harminc frequency at about 170kHz.Means we could design a driver for the second harmonic and enjoy total silence when working with it.Would also mean that the ultrasonic power would be much higher.Mass times acceleration and such things ;)If you want some ultrasonic cutter then you don't want to waste weeks and lots of money trying to come up with a working attachment to your transducer.Just keep it as short as possible and with about the same weight as the front part of the transducer.At least the driver desing would make it quite easy to design an amplifying horn by trail and error through reducing the lenght of the thin end until it really fits.Anyone with good circuit skills willing to volunteer? ;)

The future of "mobile" energy...

Right now our current standard is still to use LI-Ion batteries when it comes to rechargable and power demanding devices.We all want more power for our phones, laptops or battery powered tools on the job.And we also want to be able to charge our batteries faster and faster.Back in the old days a D-Cell like lead acid battery in a flashlight was good for about 3 hours until it started to dim a bit.With up to 4 batteries inside they were not just heavy but also quite hazardous.Chargin was usually done over night and you just hoped they were not blowing up while charging.I spare you the other types that came after and that we still use as they all have their good and their bad sides.If we trust our marketing experts than quite soon we will only have electric cars on our roads and battery the size of a suitcase shall be able to run your car for hundreds of miles.The ideas of graphite based batteries or those using crystals and their forming reactions are all great and promising.Some will certainly make it to the consumer in a few years.The one thing that we are never told though is where all the energy to charge those batteries is supposed to come from.Replacing the combustion engine with electric motors is one thing but if no fossil fuel is used....Energy does not come out of thin air!Right now a lot of countries already struggle to provide a reliable power supply grid and distribution network.If you ever enjoyed a scorching hot day during a blackout caused by everyone using too much electricity you know what I mean...The population is growing as fast as the energy demand for our industries.Solar and wind are well and good but without proper storage solutions of not real use because no one can really predict how much they can produce.You know, weather and such things...If we trust our so called experts than all will come together really nice.By the time we have really powerful batteries we will have enough alternative energy supply chains up and running to keep them charged.I have a few issues with this entire concept, so let's see what other people have to about this:Imagine you have a nice and big cabin somewhere really remote and beautiful - but with no electricity for miles.Obvious solution for the modern hunter or nature lover is to invest into free energy.Free because that is how your solar, battery and inverter system would be advertised.You buy the stuff and after that all the electricity comes for free - the things pays for itself!Reality is a bit off though as you need to maintain and replace the costly batteries over time and such things.All this however totally changes for a residential home.Getting a huge solar system on your roof is no problem.Getting off the grid next to impossible.You see, once (or even before) you sign up for an electricity contract it is defined that your home is in a residential area.This brings certain limitations like the requirement to connect ot gas (if available), water, sewage and electricity.Only way to enjoy your "free" energy is by getting a good deal with your supplier.Some countries do it differently but around here it goes like this:Whatever you use still comes right off the grid.That is because your solar system really struggles to cope with load changes and providing surplus back to the grid.And since your meter is not capable ofworking properly with it either...To make it "fair" it is metered how much you use and how much you supply.Most companies here even do this on at least an hourly base - just to fair...For your bill the amounts are then adjusted.What you supplied is taken off.Sadly in most cases going negativ is not an option - if you provide more than what you use only your supplier is laughing.To make things worse what you supply is valued far lower than what you get from the grid.Often the difference is above 20%.Control....Around here quite a few people basically covered house, shed, carport and all with solar panels.This was while we had a great subsidy from the government to go solar...After now over three years most of these people still struggle to get anywhere near even for their investment.Without the grants the timeframe to break even was estimated to be around 12 years - which is about the time for when you need to replace the lot anyway and start over.Some do get nice savings on their bills though but families with kids not so much...If you have little to no chance to get your investment back before you have to replace it, then it is not really that much of a good deal after all.Imagine in town with hundreds of small houses everyone would be able to get the same money back for the electricity they provide...Pay 18 cents per kWh from the grid and get 18 cents perkWh for what you supply and once you provide more than you use you get money back.The providers won't allow this to happen as it means they not just loose some money but also they would lose control.How could they justify another price hike?How could they explain the blackouts?Why should tey pay you at all... ;)If a city with enough open and unused space would decide to go solar on a huge scale and while add also add a lot wind turbines....Someone would need the electricity provided and someone need to step in for those times where demand is above supply.Here the old triangle of power goes into full swing....You see a city or town would need also need a sub station to handle the electricity and to distribute it to the town houses, shops and so on.Funny thing is that only a "provider" can do such things.Doing it privat is usually only possible in really remote areas, like big mining outposts that just have no other option than using generators or solar/wind.And in most areas a town or city is no longer allowed to be a provider of electricty - at least not in the drirect form.Buying in bulk is no problem, having your own supply system however is not in the books.Right now most, if not all the big wind and solar farms are owned and operated by energy providers.There is billionaires everyhwere who could build a solar and wind farm the size of Texas if they really wanted but they won't do it either...Starts with the land, goes over the usage rights and won't end with activists claiming how bad it all is.Means it won't happen and if it does then the energy providers get together and claim they guy might have money but does not have the right to provide energy unless he actuall starts a corresponding company and plays by their unwritten rules.Can we still dream about it though?The dream is kept alive like the fire of hope that is only a tiny amber.If you sign up for electricity you are asked if you would like to pay bit extra so your electricity comes from alternative sources.Why is that bad, after all it is green?The initial investment might be huge for a wind farm but after that it is more or less just providing mone out of thin air.You can look the cost up for the new windfarm build near you.Same for the electricity prices in that area.And also the expected output of the entire farm.Do the math and calculate how quickly they break even....Once they do it only profit but you still pay the extra to go green.A bit like the new road that came with a toll....After 5 years the motorists paid it off but 10 years later they are still being charged while the road is disintegrating...Now add electric cars and our constantly rising consumption to the mix...We can't provide the electricity ourselfs as we don't get fully paid for it, we can go off grid either.The atom as the source of electricity is being phased out slowly as well.Finally as some might say, considering the thausands of years we have to deal with the produced waste and what aftereffects the storage might bring.Our providers will keep their grip on us for as long as they can.No government will stop them as in return they wouldn't have electricity.A cold war if you like.We never cared how much fuel our cars use until the OPEC decide to limit supplies and drive the prices up.And you can see the riches especially in Saudi Arabia.For most of the big OPEC players it really does not matter anymore whether or not they have oil or not.They make the same or even more money by other means and more modern means now.After this initial shellshock we woke up and decided that for the shopping trip of the wife a small car with just 4 cylinders will do.Overcrowded cities and roads also pushed us more into thinking small.Again it took force to go further, this time by governments slowy "going green".Emmissions, greenhouse gasses, polution, particles and corbon monoxide...Sounded all godd in the ads but it meant we could no longer afford our old car or even got banned from entering the town center with it.But a lot people still can't afford a modern car that meets the standards.Once they finally got the money and car the laws change again and they need yet again a newer car.This created a huge export and recyling market and profits for other people though.And what differenc did it all make in reality?While we were forced to improve and lose money countries like the US refused for years to even consider reducing the pollution.Countries like China and Russia even increased their pollution to impossible levels.We all remember how Bejing was literally shut down for the Olympics so the athletes have a chance to survive the games...We know how the pollution or global warming problem is misused to make money.The governments get huge payouts in the form of taxes from those cars that can't meet the specs.The dealer smiles with the increased sales of cars.And again the government smiles too as they get taxes from this as well.We know it happened before and is still happening with everything realted to fossil fuels, global warming and pollution, so why would electricity be any different?Reactors and coal fired power plants are phased out with basically nothing to replace them.Solar and wind will provide and till then we keep what we really need to keep....There is no plan for what comes after coal and the atom.There is no alternative.Batteries need electricity.And providers will always be the middleman controlling both the price and the availability.So how does this actually work you might wonder...No matter who invents or produces a new device to provide electricity - there is a very limited market for them.A farmer can't buy a full size wind generator and place it on his land...But an electricity provider can buy thausands of them....And if you go bigger than ask yourself who would need a 10 or 100MW fusion generator?Providing electricity is only a viable option if you go big and if you can sell the excess with a profit margin.Leaves only our electricity providers as customers.If you don't have to care about the buying price because it will be put down one way or the other onto your customers than it is like a credit.Only difference is that once it is paid off you start to get money back!Imagine that for your bank account ;)And if you know what you sell can have a very generous profit margin because your buyer does not care then the solar or wind farm will be quite costly to build..."We know we are not cheap, but who else can deliver you what you need?"And like our big supermarkets there will be an agreement on what the wind generator can cost.Ressources....Be it wind, be it solar or just the modern electric motor in your car - they all require stuff that is very limited on our planet.Take Neodyminum.Without it we have no wind generator or fancy motors as we wouldn't have powerful enough magnets.Vital elements and mineral required are only available in a few spots on our erth in quantities justifying mining them.I won't make this much longer than it already is, so please look up what is really needed to keep our future solow and wind projects alive.Then go and check where we can find thes things in good quantities.Once you did you might realise why the world tolerates the abuse of human rights, freedom or just self expression in other countries ;)If only China would stop today to export and sell their rare earths and prcious minerals basically our entire production worldwide would suffer quickly.Entire industries break down quickly and prices for certain things would literally explode.The US already started to re-open long abandoned mining projects as suddenly even the most costly operations become viable again.Think about this next time you fancy a world free of cars and truck using combustion engines ;)

Damaged disc(s) in the lower back - what to do and what not ;)

I got diagnosed with a damaged L5 and L6 disc in my lower back about 8 years ago and I thought writing about my experience might helps others facing the same problems. Keeping your back straight when lifting or moving heavy things was a thing I already learned and followed during my school times and as you might have guessed it helped to keep my back healthy - at the expense of my knees... But the knees are a different story, today I want to help you understand lower back problems caused by damaged or bulging discs and how this will affect your life. For me it began with a little shock. One day I got out of bed, wanted to grab something I dropped and got stuck half way up. Knowing that there are some nerves that can cause the same issue and that a simple injection will fix me I called a cab to be dragged laying down on the back seat to my GP. As you might have guessed his diagnosis was a bit worse than what I wanted to hear... Many painful hours and some scans later it was confirmed that my L5 and L6 disk have collapsed on one side and started to push on the nerves next to it. Funny side not that I never really checked was that my doc said not everyone has a L6 disk... Anyways, as with most first "accidents" involving your lower back the so called recovery was long and painful. Sure the painkillers help to numb the worst, the anti inflammatory stuff covers some pain too but actually I did not want the full pain free package deal. Pain is the bodies way to let you know something is wrong, so I kept the pain medication at a level where I got that information when making a wrong move... The first 6 months I was literally confined to my bed, the shower and the toilet. I tried to keep a position with the least amount of pain for as long as possible and for obvious reasons was not too happy that my body not only required food intake but also the disposal of the waste products - getting out of bed and onto the toilet meant experiencing huge amounts of pain every time. But after those 6 months I started to adjust, to the pain as well as what my limited body was now capable of in terms of movement. Needless to say that all this time of not doing anything really meant my scale started to scream tripple digets at me one day... Luckily around the same time my pain levels went to a level that allowed my to walk around 500-600 at slightly slower speeds than normal before the pain got too much. My doctor also got quite concerned about my blood work and body weight recommending to loose a lot if I every intent to get back to a more normal life. So I started to walk several times a day, no matter how bad the weather was, just a bit up and down the street. The distance got longer, the fitness a bit better and the pain levels a bit lower too. Using my old weight lifting belt to keep the back supported helped me a lot during these times, especially when driving or doing housework. During those times I was still on 6-8 panedine forte tablets (paracetamol and codein) plus 2-4 tablets of 20mg oxicontin and not happy about the last anyway. Despite the added levels of pain I started to reduce the level of oxicontin and started to exercise more. My focus was getting the core muscles stronger and to get better support for my back. Also started riding my bike again, although I had to replace it for a bigger model to allow me a more upright position with less stress on the lower back. The kilos started to tumble very slowly but I was already quite proud when I got bak to 90kg. :( Good thing was that I got motivation to continue as every kg I lost and every little bit more on distance I got out of my walks and rides without getting too painful also meant that my average pain level went down too. Two years after it all happened I got rid of the oxicontin completely and reached the 80kg mark. My doc was happy too, my blood work looking good but of course he still suggested to loose a few more kg. Being able to move around again also meant being able to work again and with that came more food, less exercise and a lot more stress. I did manage to hold my 80kg but after about 6 months or working I noticed my back problems started to limit me again. My back belt covered for me and I was able to keep going a while longer but in the end I got hit by another attack on my back. The diagnosis was not good at all as now on top of the pain goind through the back and leg I also hab numbness and a feeling like ants crawl over the leg and chew on it every few mm. As with most lower back "revenges" this one only needed strong pain killers for a few weeks until I was back to something more normal in terms of pain and movability. Sadly the ongoing side effects did not go away the way they did the first time. This meant especiall finding the right position to sleep with the least amount of pain was becoming a nightmare on it's own. Either you got pins and needles keeping you awake, you lost your feeling in the leg to the point where it becomes useless or the pain in the back is just stabbing you all the time. Starting some projects here on Instructables kept my mind busy and gave me some welcome distraction from the daily routine. Eventually I manged to find a job again that allowed me to have enough different movements with only a bit of lifting so things started get back to normal. My doc put me on some amitriptyline to help with the pain at night and although it took some time to get used to the stuff it really started to help after about two weeks. The job was only for a fixed term but it gave me back some confidence that not all is bad or lost. Life went on and I actually manged to get down to just 75kg and only used some painkillers once or twice a week if it was really bad. Then, a few weeks back I started to notice that the top of my foot and the outside of my leg felt different to touch, especially in the shower with some brush or rough sponge. Not being happy already I agreed to some new scans to check if the discs started to cause problems or if the nerves are just inflamed. You might have guessed already, the scan confirmed that my two discs desintegrated further putting more pressure on the already suffering nerves. With the "help" of some quite strong anti inflammatory stuff, cortisone and other meds my doc managed to get me back to "normal" but he also informed me that this won't last forever. The current outcome (without surgery but more on that later on) I have two choices to keep going: a ) I continue with pain killers and other meds to keep the problems at bay. b ) I limit myself to basically not doing anything involving the movemnt of my lower back, keep to a strict calory intake and hope for the best. The first option won't do me any good in the long run except liver, kidney and digestive problems. The second option will allow me some sort of a normal life at the expense of never finding a job to support me again. So once again we soldier on knowing that it will only make things worse as giving up and relying on social services is no option for me. Hoping that you might just had your first encounter with lower back injuries and pain I will give some advise on the things that helped my most so that you might not have to suffer as much I did and still do. So read on please... Diagnosed with a damaged or bulged disc in the lower back - what does it acutally mean? If you check all the available images of the human skelleton you will quickly notice one thing: Our lower back is not really straight and not designed to carry a lot weight when it is put on the wrong way or direction. Noone with a sane mind would use a support beam shaped like that but the human body adapted to this problem caused by changing from using all four limbs to walking on just two legs. The muscles and tendons in our back work in such a way that they support the fragile construction of discs and bones that keep us upright. Sadly modern life, personal decisions and only too often a busy work shedule prevent us from using our body the wa we should. Be it too much lifting, being far too short for your weight or simply laziness the factors causing our muscle to degrade are too many to count. But once you are in the worst pain you ever felt and your doc tells you that there are damaged discs you suddenly wish you had it all done differently years ago - trust me, I have been there and I have done it ;) Or it might be like in my case that a healthy and fit person just cracks one or more discs for no obvious reason. Either way it means you have to change your life to be able to keep going. Pain killers help to ignore the problem and pretend all is good but they should be used with great care as most are highly addictive and the long term side effects are no fun either. The one thing you must never forget is although being a life sentence it must not mean you will be crippled forever! What can I do once it happened to help the pain and my sanity? Nerve pain is one of the worst pains there is and there are only two more or less working medications to deal with it. The first meds are opiates to literally numb the pain but due to source of the pain very high levels are required until the body adapted to deal with the wrong pain information. The second group of meds that offer help and that are often used together with pain killers are old sty anti depressants like the try-cyclic (was that right?) amitriptyline. Back in the days they were not really good for the advertised job but one of the common side effects was how they worked on the pain centers of the brain. In much lower dosages as used to treat depressions these meds help the brain to deal with the pain caused by the damaged or pinched nerves. As a long term solution they should be prefered over opiates so that the strong pain killers are only taken when really needed. If you are anything like me than not getting enough sleep over weeks on end will take a toll on your mood. So being able to sleep at least a few hours in one go is a real thing to aim for unless you prefer to harm your body with pain killers. What is there to help with the pain so you can sleep? I know that you now already think you tried it all and that nothing good comes out of here but keep reading as you might be surprised... The first thing that jumps into mind when it comes to sleeping is a bed - be it you by yourself or with a partner. And here also is the first point to improve! In many countries a bed for two persons has one bad feature: A single mattress! Any movement from the person next to you is transfered more or less onto your body - you don't want that! So if you own a big bid that you share with someone think about investing into a bed with seperated matresses and support frames. That brings us to the mattress itself. A lot of people think being soft and flexible is a prefered thing, not so much if you have back problems. You want enough support to keep the back straight without everything feeling like you sleep on wooden floorboards. Keep in mind though that when changing from soft matress to something much firmer you will need to adjust. Really the best option is to seek professional advise in a bedding studio or similar. And no, you don't have to go to the most expensive place to buy a mattress, you just try them out, get expert advise and use that new knowledge to find a suitable mattress to fit the budget. With no offence meant: If you are over the normal weight you really want to loose the excess and that means selecting a new matrress on your weight goal and not on your current weight! It is also good to have adjustable supports under the mattress itself, this way you choose a thinner and bit softer mattress but still get the firmness your back requires - again seeking proffessional advise on the right combinations is highly recommended here! Ok, your bed is sorted but still there is that nagging pain in certain positions or the tingling in your leg preventing you to go to sleep. Believe it or not but what you do before you go to bed affects how you feel when you hit the sack. So sitting like a bag full of water in front of your TV until just manage to crawl into bed won't do you any good. Same for having your dinner and hour or two before bedtime... What does help is to move your body and to burn a few kalories! If it helps you use a weight lifting belt but just a walk around the block with a little bit of bending and flexing will get the tension out of muscles. A nice partner giving you a proper massage might help too but I doubt you will get one every night ;) And before you start to complain: Yes, I know there are times where simply can't do any exersise as you will be happy to make it to the toilet or to make some dinner. For those times and especially during times of experiencing higher than normal pain level ther is something you can do to ease the pain. Some doctors will tell you but a lot of them wont: Cold actually helps to numb the pain and the symptoms like tingling, pins and needles or the constant stabbing when you made a slightly wrong move. But you need to apply the cold in the right way to get the benefit! The key here is timing. Using real ice in a suitable wrapper, so no vegetables or meat, you apply the cold where the damage is - not where the pain is! You want to cool down the area around the damaged discs for about 5 to max 10 minutes. Put the icepack back and repeat every hour! Nothing will happen after the first two or three round but then you will notice improvement - how much depends on the individual and extend of the damage of course. When I have bad days I usually start around mid-day and keep going every hour until either the pain is gone or it is time to drag myself to bed. The worst you can do is o apply heat! A warm (not hot!) bath can help to ease some muscular tension but hot packs or heat lamps will make your pain get worse quickly. Just imagine and inflammation somehwere else, the area is already hot and painful so you really don't want to add more heat, do you? ;) What can be done to keep mobile and improve? As said earlier the key is support for the damaged areas and of course a limitation in movements that put additional stress on the damaged dics - this includes weight, be it from your own body in terms of excess fat or simply be lifting things! You will have times of no pain and where you think you are 20 years younger again but never use that as an excuse to think your discs have improved! Once damaged they stay damaged and everything putting more stress on you dsic(s) will make things worse. A friend of mine loves to play golf - if you have back problems you want to find a different hobby! Coming from three digits I can tell you without being offensive in any way that being fat means having problems that you don't want to add to your list caused by a bad back! So like it or not you really need to loose all the excess you can find wobbling around your body! For me every single kg I lost was a step forward to being more fit and being able to more things for longer before my pain got too much. And no, there is no excuse for keeping those kilos if are able to leave the bed for more than a few hours. Turst me, you will feel better, need far less medication and like yourself much better once the benfits of less weight kick in! Exercise is the key to getting your life back to a more or less normal level! If you are a "first offender" than you have a good chance that a change of habbit and maybe job will make sure it stays a single incident and that you can have a pain free life after the initial recovery! Getting a higher core strenght and overall fitness level helps your body to heal but most importantly gives you the option to gain muscles where needed to support your back. You might think there is nothing you can do if you are in pain and can't really move anyway but if you do then you are wrong. I am not a personal trainer but I found a lot of ways to use my muscles without using my back for it... There is enough info on the web for exercise methods without any training gear and if you think "really hard" you might notice you can use a lot of positions to exercise your arms and legs without stressing you back ;) And even for the back you can do good without damage: If you lay flat on your belly you just slightly lift your arms and legs off the ground - this will need the support of the muscles in lower back! No need to actuall lift anything high, just enough to only slightly bend your back up - you might not even notice any bending at all. What you don't want is exercise like running, jogging or even contact sports, really nothing that might force your back to move more than what is possible without stressing your discs... Better fitness and more strenght means you will get better flexibility and movablity but never let that fool you into thinking the damage is gone! I can not stress enough than even if you don't need medication and feel fine a single wrong move can make all null and void! What are the options if despite loosing weight and excercise my pain is not going away or syptoms get worse? Well, we can ignore it, we can hope it all goes away but the sad reality for most is that sooner or later you reach the point where the damage is too much too handle. The first one to tell you that your lower back is now due for a pit stop is your foot. The pain might be more than what you ever experienced the pins and needles might drive you mad but as long as it just that you are fine, really :( For me it was during some light gradening when I got my "first hit" so to say. I brushed it off thinking I tripped over something that got kicked away while I struggled to keep my balance. A few days later I noticed that I had to put some extra efford to prevent my toes from scraping the floor while walking. It was there when I also realised that most of the feeling on top of my foot was gone. Same story for the outside of my calf by the way... For me, thanks to a non working medical system and no private health cover the story ends here... Since you might have more luck: Modern medicine has gone a long way when it comes to minimal invasive operations and they are the key to performing operations that otherwise would be impossible or require months of recovery. For the "treatment" of damaged discs in the lowest part of the spinal area the old conventional treatment was to fuse the bones together using some steel or titanium rods. To give the patient relief the dmaged disc was more or less mutilated to free the damaged nerve(s). Several weeks of bed rest and great loss in movement was the price to pay for less pain. Today we are much further and can use micro instruments to perform operations deemed impossible only a few years ago. One of the operations with the greatest and fastest recovery rates is actually quite smart if you think about it: A small portion of bone is removed to give more room for the nerve and to aid in the healing - without fusing the bones! The next step is remove the part of the disc that is bulging out - without removing the strong support layers around it, only the mashed up bits are taken away. The patient is literally pain free ( from the back pain) right after the operation. Healing takes about 2-3 weeks but by then even the pain from the cut bones will be gone. Some health insurers see these operations as a means to get a person back to work and into a normal life, so they support it. Others use simple math and decide pain killers are cheaper... In any case you should seek professional advice from your doc and health care provider before it is too late! Diagnosed and operated early can mean you get the option to have an almost normal life again, or at least a few years of being able to enjoy life much more than before the operation. There are of course risks involved and an opration might not be an option for every case but knowing your options and what form of treatment might be available for you can be reall life changing... Ok, but what's the worst that can happen to me if a simple operation is no longer an option? One of the first things you will notice after loosing control and feeling for your foot is a more or less contant need to go the toilet. Despite having an empty bladder or just using the toilet minutes ago you can develop the feeling that you really must go the toilet again. Sadly this is only the beginning... If things get worse you can loose control over your bladder and bowel. Simply put it means you no longer control the muscular tension required to keep you vital openings closed when required. Usually at this point your doctor will recommend to operate one way or the other. For you, if affected, this means you have to decide between the risk of an operation that might only last for a few months or years or wearing adult nappies... If you already had one or more operation or the damage to the disc(s) is too severe it can mean that there is no other option but to fuse the bones into place to prevent further damage and allow for some healing. But trust me, for your doc to even consider an operation you need to loose all the weight you can! What are my limitations after having my back bones fused together? Well, as it reads you will be fused together, meaning you level of movement will be severly limited. It also means you beep all the time at the airport security or when entering a court or other place with metal detectors - but that is the least of the worries I guess... The main problem after such operations is getting back to a life as normal as possible. You get a lot of help in rehab and will learn what you can and can't do, plus of course how to keep you fit despite these limits. Some people cope really good with the new limitations but others struggle a lot. This especially true if before the person was really active and doing a lot in terms of sport and outdoor activities. Learning to adapt to the changes allows you have many more years without too much pain or limitations. Sure, Golf is out of the question, playing soccer or riding a normal bike too but life goes on and being a part of it is always better than just looking at it through your bedroom window ;) In any case giving up should not be an option for you! No matter how bad it looks when the pain is too much, there are always more good days than bad days ahead of you! Go ahead, share your experience with back pain, what you do keep going and handle the pain.
