Adding a field to mention cost?

I think I have read many instructable pages and don't see that users mention the cost of the project. They do mention what materials and spares were used and where to procure them from, but I think that the uploading user should be requested to mention the  cost under the instructable, so that a new reader gets an idea of approximately how much money it is going to cost him apart from the time he has to put in. A new field at the end of the instructable whereby the users may enter cost of each item listed or the total cost of all the items in the project. This will greatly enhance the instructable pages. Thanks.

Nuclear power costing

I am doing the cost of electricity for a nuclear power plant and was wonder if this costing equation seems right:  Take a plant at the cost of $ 7 billion and produces 1100 MW of power 7000000000/1100/1000= $ 6363.63 per kW Normally the life cycle is 40 years and a weighted average cost of capital is 14.50% So 6363.63 kWh * .1450 = 922.72 The typical capacity factor ranges from 75% to 85% so the average will be taken 80% This capacity factor is then multiplied by the number of hours in a year which is 8760 0.80 * 8760= 7008 kWh a year the plant is running So: 922.72/ 7008 = 0.132 which is 13.2 cents per kWh. Operation and maintenance costs with fuel is estimated at 1.5 cent per kWh Property taxes is at around $0.02 cent/kWh Fuel cycle is at around $0.03 cent/ kWh Waste cost and the decommissioning costs together are 0.02 cents/ kWh So the total cost stands at around 21.7 or 22 cents per kWh ive done another equation out for 3rd generation reactors that comes out at a lower cost. does this seem right? i am not sure how to work out the weighted average capital cost % (that was a figure i took from a site) i will be grateful for any reply

Reduce Power Costs?

I need to cut the cost of power I consume in my house so I came up with a simple project which I "think" might help but need more assistance. I put together two motors joined with gears so that as one runs, it spins the other. The driving motor is powered by 3v and the other 9v. When I start the 3V motor, it spins and the 9v motor outputs 7v. What I intend to do is run the 3v from a battery, spin the 9v to produce 7v -9v, save that power to the same battery running the 3v and also use the same saved power to run something else. The above is on small scale. I need to do this on a larger scale later on where I can save 12v and use an inverter to produce 220v. Any advice on how to make the above feasible is welcome

Provide cost estimate at the start of classes?

I love the new classes feature here at Instructables, and have the ambition to complete as many of them as possible. I do have some feedback for them, however, and that is that the introduction to the class should include a rough estimate of how much it's going to cost to buy the various bits needed to complete the class. I've just finished the Arduino class and loved the fact that a lot of the lessons leading up to the final project contributed to the final build, and as such helped keep the costs of buying the materials (relatively) low. The same can't be said for the Electronics class, however, which has different projects to build for each lesson and is working out rather expensive as a result. Now please understand, I'm not complaining about the fact you have to build a project for each lesson. If anything I'm rather enjoying it. But a little heads up of what roughly how much the class is going to end up costing would be a welcome addition. I can see this consisting of two different sums: - the cost of equipment which is needed, but once you have it, you have it for keeps. - and the cost of any materials which will be consumed by the project. I'm keen on moving onto another class just as soon as I complete the Electronics one, but would like to be able to work out which one I should go for, taking things like price into account, before I get started - rather than maybe having to abandon the class because I suddenly find I can 't afford some of the equipment or materials I'll need for it. Thank you

College (sigh)

Alright, so I know that I'm just 14, but hey! I don't think it's too early to think about college.Based on what I enjoy doing, I figure that my best bet would be to go into mechanical engineering. I thought about electrical and chemical engineering, but I am more of a hands-on kind of guy.Thing is, I want to go to a college that is in the SEC (Southeastern Conference). One, because I'd rather stay down South, and two, I'd like to stay fairly close to my family (i.e., not up North/out West).UA (Alabama) is the only one that offers courses in mechanical engineering. I'm not sure about other colleges, but because I am out-of-state, my education costs nearly $11,000 more than a resident of the state.Geez! I don't come from a rich family, so that seems a bit, extravagant. Now, I have and and have always had straight A's. I'm in the "advanced" classes, blah, blah, I participate in the Academic Bowl, blah, blah, ok. I'm fairly educated, so I'm sure a scholarship will come my way.In Georgia, we have the HOPE Scholarship, which will help fund students with high grades if they go to a Georgia college.I have yet to find a college in Georgia that offers courses in mechanical engineering. Now, Georgia Tech may have one, but I cannot go there, as they are a fierce rival of UGA.After writing all of this, I don't actually remember my purpose of posting this here, but will continue.Oh, that's right: Does anyone know of some scholarships that would fund out-of-state students?Any other advice, of any kind, would be appreciated.Didn't know picking a college would be this hard.P.S. What exactly is your job called, Eric? (or any of the iBles staff)

The cost and downside of modern life

In another topic we noticed that times have have changed in terms of repairs, spare parts or just finding a replacement for something. It not only seems that a lot of people no longer bother to repair their broken things but also that for those who still want to the available options are disappearing fast. Take the common lawn mover as an example: We can buy them in dedicated shops, the local hardware store, supermarkets and sometimes even at Aldi. But if you need such a simple spare part like a fuel hose or gasket for the carby you are usually lost unless you can order the parts from some online store at the other end of the world. Electronics are even worse, here a broken charging plug or just loosing the charger can mean people throw it in the bin to buy a new device. Splicing a rope? Why bother if a big bunch of knots does the same LOL Do you still remember these little repair shops that used to fix your waching machine, TV or sometimes even your electric drill? Where are they now? Or all these small electronics shops selling resistors, wire and complete kits? I still remember the times when I could take my radio to the local shop, the guy listens to the sound and lack of available stations and knew right away what parts I needed - and they were right at hand. For a few bucks extra he even replaced the broken bits if he had the time. After thinking a bit about all this I came to realise two things: a) We are getting lazy and no longer learn vital skills because modern life makes us think we no longer need these skills. b) Unless you can repair something yourself, labour costs mean a repair is often not worth it. Who here, under the age of 30 still knows how to make a good campfire from scratch, dares to take the lawnmower apart to fix it himself or simply bothers to stich up a little rip in his fancy tent instead of buying a new one? For crying out loud, a lot of kids don't even know how operate a washing machine by the time the lease the parents home for good... Schools seem to support these life changes by no longer teaching the use of pen and pencil, not to mention ink... All the kids get is a tablet or laptop and that means they don't even have to learn the language anymore - that what the spell checker does. If I dare to spin this further by another 25 or so years I only see chaos. Everyone is highly specialised, noone bothers to cook anymore and the third generation in the family no longer has any clue what the first generation is talking about. When my grandfather grew up life was hard. When my parents grew up life was all about expressing yourself. When I grew up life was intersting because everything was changing so fast. When my kids leave the house what will they say about this?... What do you think ? How much has modern life affected since you grew up ? And of course: Do think it is the right trend ?

LOW COST BATTERY for CELL phone

My old LG flip phone still has lots o' pics, contact info, etc. I don't wanna throw it out, but the battery no longer holds a charge. I'd like to recycle the old battery, but when plugged into a charger with no batt, the phone  will not turn on.   Why can't I power it up on the wal-wart transformer alone?  Do I really need to spend $40 on a battery just to access old pics n stuff? Is there some proprietary circuit in there that "says" to the phone "I'm here"  other than just plain old voltage? Although the old battery seems to work just well enough to access data as long as it's plugged in, I'd like to get rid of said battery in case it eventually leaks.

Question by flamesami   |  last reply

power loss in battery chargers...USB

A transformer, being a pair of electromagnets, such that it reduces the voltage of household power to whatever voltage your battery powered device needs, will cost you somethin if its plugged into the wall, even if yoour phone, laptop, etc isn't plugged in. but it seems that these 5v usb chargers are too small to contain a transformer. I dont think they get warm when they are idly plugged in.  I imagine they may just have a rectifier and zener diode. Is that the case?  Do they waste power when left in an outlet?
