Covering

I am building a Sig Tiger rubber band-powered model. I know it's wimpy, but I don't have a budget for anything larger, or a place to fly it. My question is if anyone has experience with model airplane covering. Specifically, I read an article in an old RC Modeler magazine that said plastic wrap, attached with a glue stick, made excellent covering for light models, but that Monokote and Ultrakote will crush light balsa models when it shrinks. Has anyone ever tried this? I'm supposed to use tissue, according to the plans, but ew.Also, I have an ancient U-Control Waco SRE biplane that my uncle built when he was deployed to Korea. It has an old O.S. Max III 35 that has no hope of running again, but I want to at least recover it. Any suggestions for removing old covering? It seems to be Monokote-type stuff.

Gas stove top burner covers?

I have a fairly small kitchen, and as such, I would like to make a burner cover for it. What I was thinking was something could be folded. Not only to save space when I don't need it on the stove at all, but in hopes of being able to keep it on half the stove, fold it up, and have access to two burners. However, I am unsure what to use to do this. I know that the heat from an active burner would burn most woods, and produce a fire hazard. But, I don't know what other materials would be workable enough to do such a thing. I was thinking of just covering the bottom of some MDF to reduce heat transfer through the MDF, as right now, that is what I am using when I am not using the stove at all.

Removing Humbucker Covers

I have an ebony Epiphone Les Paul that's a couple of years old and I'm considering taking the pickup covers of of the humbuckers just so it looks different from all of the stock Les Pauls. How would I do that? I recently built my own electric guitar and I'm still in that mode where I want to customize my instruments. So far my Les Paul is completely stock. Also, if anyone else has any ideas of things I can do to customize it, I'm open to ideas. Thanks!

DIY book covers

Hi, I'm working on a project- making a DIY book cover. I've figured out how to assembe the book already but the cover baffles me. How can I deboss the cover with foil so that the lettering(title) will be on the cloth cover? I was thinking about using black book cloth, or leatherette, but I just don't know how to depress the lettering of the title onto the front cover or the spine itself. Any ideas?

Mechanical Cover Flow

Book cover Hinge

Hey all. First time poster here (second attempt, since Instructables stopped responding the first time) so hopefully I am posting in the appropriate place. I have in mind a leather-book-style cover for my tablet that I'm very excited to work on. However, I would like to use friction or torque hinges to position the cover at any angle  from the spine in a 180 degree radius and have it stay there, similar to the screen of a laptop rotating around the hinge. I've included a picture that shows the basic design that I'm aiming for, though the hinge itself doesn't need to be ornate. Unfortunately, I don't really know where to find such a thing. I've looked on various furniture hardware sites and taken a trip to the local hardware/home improvement stores, but I haven't found anything that matches what I'm looking for. Common small brass butt hinges would be ideal if they had friction/torque properties to them, but I can't seem to find anything like that. I've never looked for specific hinges before though, so for all I know they've been right in front of my and I didn't realize what they were. Does anyone know where I can find such hinges, or can someone offer up an alternative solution? Perhaps there is a way to add friction to simple hinges bought from a hardware store. Thanks in advance for pointers/advice.

insulating radiator cover

I'm looking for suggesting for upping the r-value on top of my radiator. Every window in my apartment has a radiator underneath it. I'd like to have some plants by those windows ('cause y'know, they need light and all) but I'm concerned about heat from below drying & killing the plants. A couple of the radiators have covers, but they're metal, so no insulation there. Ceramic pots may provide some insulation, but I'd really like to lay down a layer of some kind of building insulation proper just to be safe. The question is, what kind? Batting won't work, and the foam insulation panels I've seen at the hardware store I know are a fire hazard... plus not too fond of plastic-type materials. My dad suggested something he called "thermal block" which I believe is aerated concrete panels, but which I can't find a source to purchase. I'd like to spend less than $20, preferably less than $10 on this. Please help!

Protective Cover for Solar Cells? Answered

I have a commercial solar panel that has burned out cells.  I figure this is a great candidate for overhauling.  I notice that the cells are protected with what appears to be clear silicon with a clear plastic covering, Tedlar or Kevlar?  Anyone know where to get large quantity of silicon for large pour of covering?  It would appear to me that after the cells are assembled the silicon would be poured and then the plastic cover placed on top and the some sort of rolling pin or squeegy to smooth out, this would be better than plexiglas laid over the cells,  hail could hit it and not break anything.

custom made tire cover

Last summer I bought my '07 Jeep Wrangler. The previous owner had added some stickers and a spare tire cover to make it look like he had the "Call of Duty" package. That's not my cup of tea, so I took that stuff off. I would like to add my own design to the spare tire cover. I actually have the design ready to go on Photoshop. I though maybe I could take it to a place like Staples, have it printed as a vinyl sign, and then use a strong adhesive to glue it to the old cover, on top of the Call of Duty stuff. I imagine, though, that there are probably some adjustments to this whole plan that would help things turn out better. Any advice?

Beautiful Crystal Covered Apartment

Copper-sulfate crystals are lovely with their rich blue color. So lovely that artist Roger Hiorn completely covered the inside of an apartment in London with them. This was done by sealing it and pumping in 75,000 liters of supersaturated solution. After it had cooled and been drained off, the doors have been opened for visitors to come in two or three at a time. This can only be done since the apartment was set to be demolished. Stop by before it closes on Nov. 30 and gets destroyed. Link

Automatic window cover motor

I have a problem in my apartment with an outdoor light right outside my window. If i dont close my curtains at night my room pretty much looks like daylight. I like to wake up to the sun though so I started looking at automatic curtain openers, saw the price and decided it cant be that hard to diy. My idea is to have a curtain that rolls up rather then goes to the side. I am trying to think of a way to make this simple cheap and quiet. really all I need is a rod and fairly quiet motor that I can plug into a wall. I was thinking a rotisserie motor would be pretty good but have never been near one to hear how loud they are. It might solve the problem of a rod as well depending on how long of a stick I can get for it. Anyone have any other ideas of a better way to do this?

Esquire's e-Ink cover

A friend writes:If anyone is interested in hacking the E-Ink version of the October issue of Esquire, here's some info. First, it's not available everywhere, but just in major stores like Borders and Barnes & Nobel. I got one at the Emeryville Borders. They have a display rack full of them. After removing the paper, tape, printed plastic and foam padding, here's what's left: (see pic)The PCB has 6 (!) 3V lithium batteries. It looks like one poweres the control electronics and the other five give 15 volts to run the displays. There's a PIC12F629 and some pads for in-circuit programming. There's also a couple of 4094 8 bit shift registers. There are two E-Ink display panels, but they're not general-purpose dot matrix. They have a small number of pre-patterned regions that can be made black or white. If you disconnect a panel from the circuit, the panel remains in its last state. It might be possible to open up a panel and put a different pattern underneath it (say, with a PCB). Might be fun.The PCB could be useful even without the E-Ink displays. You could connect a bunch of LEDs to it and reprogram the PIC. Not bad for $5.99 plus tax.I did later tear open one of the two display panels. You can remove the aluminum backing to reveal the connections printed in cunductive paint on the back of a pattern in conductive plastic. Trying to peel the conductive plastic away from the E-Ink active layer destroys the display, and releasing a tiny amount of E-Ink dust.It does look like one could cut the display into small pieces to possibly make small separate indicators. You'd need to retain the edge that connects to the clear conductive plastic on the front of the display.
