I'm planning on building myself (or modifying my existing one) to create the ultimate workspace and among the several features I have planned (usb hub etc) I have one particularly tricky one, I'd like to integrate the desk with a speaker system but massive drivers wont cut it on such a small surface area. I had recently seen a speaker system that uses glass or crystal vibrating to create amazing sound, I was wondering how I'd shape such crystals and if anyone has any general ideas on the design of the speaker system ?

I want to fabricate and cast crystals to then cast in glass. I've done glass casting before, but not much mold making. If I have a wax positive, I can melt it out of the plaster/silica mold so it doesn't have to be a 2-part mold as long as there aren't any undercuts, which there won't be. My question is how can I fabricate and then cast crystals to then cast in wax to make my glass mold? I'd like to work with silicone since it is flexible and then I won't have to make a 2-part mold. I thought about cutting foam to make the crystals, but I want the edges to be very smooth so that the glass casts look like crystals. I also thought about carving glycerine soap and casting that, but not sure how it would hold up to being cast with any flexible mold-making materials like silicone. Any advice?

I kind of know what it is, but i need a professional (Professer? Kiteman, my hero! LoL...) awnser. I know it is some form of crystal that when pressure is applied, positive (ions?) form at one side, and negative at the other. Also, how does a piezoelectrical ignitor work? What crystal does it use?

Copper-sulfate crystals are lovely with their rich blue color. So lovely that artist Roger Hiorn completely covered the inside of an apartment in London with them. This was done by sealing it and pumping in 75,000 liters of supersaturated solution. After it had cooled and been drained off, the doors have been opened for visitors to come in two or three at a time. This can only be done since the apartment was set to be demolished. Stop by before it closes on Nov. 30 and gets destroyed. Link

As part of a very low budget film I have been asked to research how to make a prop from the following specification "We need a crystal stone the size of a tennis ball or a bit larger. It can be any shape but it must have colour (real of illuminated)." The reference has been given as a Copper Sulphate Crystal we are an a deadline for mid Feb so any help would be fantastic I have added reference pictures also All responses gratefully received Regards Peter?

What do you think about the feasibility of a credit card sized crystal radio? (Fits inside a wallet) Some possible i though so far are... A simple pcb with a diode, and a capacitor and a coil wrapped(protected by duct tape) around it. The antenna has to be tied to a hole on a corner. Or it is coiled to the card, ready to be unwrapped. The ear piece can either be external... Or can be glued to the card itself, but you must put the card near you ear... Instead of a winded coil, maybe it can be part of the pcb design itself... and to tune it, you unhook a beady wire and place it in the holes placed in a interval. What do you think? Any more ideas? In fact. a competition can be made for this idea.

(If you want the blow-by-blow of my questions, skip the following gigantic piece of text and proceed to the 2nd list after the first) I was reconsidering making a crystal radio the past week and so I set out to research the topic on the 2nd most popular information database on the internet which comes out of the 1st most popular one. According to wikipedia, all you need is one diode in order to split the AC signal coming in via the antenna in half, therefore it uses half-wave rectification (it's not quoted; it's what I understand from it). Could full-wave rectification be also used? Like connecting the antenna to a bridge rectifier (aka. diode bridge, aka. 4 diodes stuck together)? I know that half-wave rectification yields pulsed DC, but I also don't understand how. By that I mean what happens to the other half? Does the other half of the wave connect directly to the output? One last thing, I know the largest metallic object I can ever use as an antenna is basically just my roof, but then I don't like coming up to the roof and looking for some exposed metal to connect to. Any thoughts on what huge, metallic items I can use in my household? I've already thought up a list of what I could use for an antenna: -Window screens -Extremely long piece of wire (I have an 8 meter long CAT5 cable going from the 1st to the 2nd floor) -My front gate -Sheet metal laying outside my front door (not the gate) Here is the summary of all my questions: -Is this wikipedia article true? (see at the list "semiconductor" area) -Can full-wave rectification be used on such radios? -In the case of half-wave rectification, where does the other half of the signal go? -What can I use as an antenna (excluding my roof)? Aside from the asked questions: -Is there any other way to tune to a particular frequency? -I'm asking opinions to people who know what they're doing (no offense to beehard44, this is more of a poll that anything else).

I'm Sure someone has had this idea before but I just want to know if people think this would be cool. I was thinking about make a breadboard with a crystal radio transmitter with a head phone jack sticking out of it, that would fit in some sort of case, and have it stick into my iPod Nano 3rd Generation. My iPod is red so I would paint the case red to match, Please post idea and links to the parts please.

I need a detector for my crystal set,but don't want to use a geranium diode or that "cats whisker detector" that i cant get to work. PLEASE HELP ME, I NEED HELP!!! the cats whisker detector i used was a blued piece of steel / carbon (or pencil lead) from Youtube: [search] [make magazine foxhole radio] if a mineral like geranium, galea, iron pyrite (fools gold) work well, i would like to know how to obtain it without buying anything online? (i mainly don't want use a geranium diode because one i had burnt up. another reason why i don't want a 1N34A is because it isn't available at any "real physical" stores (like Radioshack ) i don't mind to use another type of diode. what about a schottky diode? do they sell any @ radioshack? and will it work?

For the past couple of days I have been interested and reading about crytsal radios. Having many issues recently, I do know that our radio stations here in Australia went to 'digital' and they removed analog T.V, but I never heard anything about radio. I can still pick up AM radio stations on the radio or in the car, but are these signals sent differently that a crystal cannot pick up? I attempted 2 versions of a foxhole radio, no luck at all there. So I went to Jaycar and bought this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KV3540 This proper PCB, with a galena diode still does not work. It also doesnt use a ground. Unless my aerial needs to be bigger which I doubt! I am using a 30ft spreader aerial. Later today I will stand NEXT to a radio station building which is only 2km from here, if it does not work, then no crytal radio works over here anymore which would really suck! How could they remove it!? And if I am wrong about the crystal stuff, then im still mad that the analogue technology has been removed anyway. It should sit there for anyone to explore.

Hey everybodyi just got this idea of making a wireless internet using ADSL (from cable form to wireless). There should be some cat5 cable connections. There are 8 pins in a cable, 4 of them are used: 1 pair for transmit (+ and -) and another for receive (+ ad -). I haven't experiment with this yet, but by connecting a crystal to the adsl, like transmitting music using AM radio, and connect a receiver, like most cd players that have abilities to receive am radio (perhaps solder the 2 wires from the speaker), this probably should work? Connect the same things to the computer, like the images below shown. So 2 crystals and 2 radio receivers are needed. Also, there should be 2 different frequencies, one for transmit and another for receive.Hope this would work. Any thoughts and comments are very welcome =]

Hi, I am trying to make a stopwatch that counts from 1 second to 59 minutes. Almost all the circuits that I've seen involves some kind of coding or programmable ics. But I don't want that. I'll be using a quartz crystal as my 1 Hz base and 4 individual 7 segment displays ( 2 for seconds and 2 for minutes). I know how to use decade counters to count till 60 seconds but I need help for turning 60 seconds to 1 minute and reset the 7 segments that represent seconds. In a nutshell, I would like to know how to change 00:59 to 01:00. A counter that updates after every six "inputs" could solve everything. A link to a a circuit diagram would be helpful too.

I have a movie project idea that requires the use of a prop with one heck of a twist. Im trying to make a "Crystal Ball" that can project a movie from the inside of the ball, and I need to find some way to make it work without the necessary use of any tv or usb cables, even though it can use them. (Ex: in one shot, the actor is holding the ball, and is visible from head to his waist, but there are no cables running from the ball) So it could use video data from an SD card or a USB and also be used as a TV. The largest ball I can find is a 3" diameter clear plastic craft ball from a nearby hobby shop in a neighboring town. I guess what im asking in a nutshell is "how small can you make a diy projector?" Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!

- I know that a Green Tourmaline Crystal, when heated, will produce a negative and positive charge at respective ends of the crystal-so, if the heat source was a super glass lens ( convex or concave, i am not sure which would work most intensely, with the sun going through the lens and hitting the crystal- ( for the ecologically minded)-or a laser- or microwave blast, would we then have a natural battery? It may have to be a large crystal!

I bought a RC submarine that was running at 40Mhz. Submarine broke, seller shipped a replacement, but replacement could not be remotely controlled by original remote. In fact, while looking under the submarine, there was a sticker written "49Mhz - 3". I guess it is referring to Channel 3 - 49.860Mhz. So could I buy a 49.860 crystal, remove the 40Mhz crystal from remote controller, and get my submarine to run again? Is there anything else to consider???
