Old big-screen TV -- What to do with the dang thing?

My big-screen TV is 18 years-old and is forcing me to buy a bigger house. What can I do with it? It works but the picture is just plain bad. I hate to trash it because the wood structure looks so much nicer than its reception. Aquarium? No, I don't care to clean the tank. Bookshelf? No, I don't need that. Gun cabinet? Nah. Anybody have an interesting idea or know where to direct me for creative advice? This dinosaur is huge but looks great when closed. Thanks, RebelwoaCloo.

If a snowman got struck by lightening...

If a snowman was struck by lightening, wouldn't it explode? The way I see it, all of the water would be instantly turned into steam, so maybe it wouldn't be classified as an explosion, but it would look dang cool. -Now we just have to have a thunderstorm in the wintertime, or we could get the Mythbusters to bring a snowman to one of those 'Artificial Lightening' places-

Using original pictures... Is there a way to tell? Answered

Lol... this is my 2nd pet peeve.  (My first pet peeve is clicking on an Instructable that isn't an Instructable... or a half-@ss one at best.)  Back to the question... is there a way to tell if the photographs in an instructable are original or just something snagged from the www?  Disclaimer: I occasionally use the photo below (snagged from the www) for the final step of some Ibles .  It's always under the title "Author's Notes".   Now another note to self:  Take your own dang picture since this bugs you so much, ;-)

Delayed again!!!

I have been working on my plasma speaker for a long time, after I got everything working, I was about to take a good video of it working. But just then, the MOSFET exploded, and made a huge puff of smoke... Dang! Delayed again! I made and completed the instructable on making a plasma speaker (some of you might had seen it as you are subscribed to me), but I just need a video to prove that the plasma speaker is working. I was going to post the instructable today, but the MOSFET delayed it... :-( It may be a few more days before the instructable is published...

Recommend a small and loud speaker Answered

I'm working on a project that needs a purdy dang small speaker, but it still needs to be loud enough to be heard clearly from about 10 feet away.  Now, I know that when you loose size you loose watts and when you loose watts you loose volume, but I was wondering if anybody could recommend a speaker 50-ish millimeters or less in diameter and loud enough to be heard clearly from 10 feet away. If it helps, I'm working with an Arduino with an Adafruit Wave Shield to make a human voice speak English (American-ish). Thanks for the help, Schmidtn

How do you read crease patterns?

Recently,  I saw a website by Robert J. Lang.  I really like origami,  so I looked up some of his diagrams, and, guess what?  They were all a bunch of crease patterns.  Right now those are pretty dang useless to me.  I was reading some of the entries to the site and i saw this: "A reasonable number of people now have the skill to “read” a crease pattern and fold the encoded form."  The second I saw that, I thought, "Are you mocking me?"   So, in other words, how do you "read" CP's as the great (just kidding) Robert J. Lang said?

CEILING FAN REPAIR

This could become an instructable, but these days, juggling photo files from cell phone to email to comp to ibles is so dang cumbersome..    anyway, this is how i fixed ceiling fan. fan has a rubber plate between motor and blades. apparently a bit of wiggle room for blades is a desirable thing. but that rubber plate was cracking. the fan blades had begun to hang low and drag against the light fixture below em. so i removed the lights that hang below fan. removed all 5blades,  blasted dust off rubber plate with compressed air, and used used gel superglue from loctite brand to glue cracks in rubber plate. i specifically got glue in a tube, not a bottle, since ihad to apply it upwards.  i never removed fan motor from ceiling, so, the work was overhead. the glue says its good for rubber, and so far, it has held up. the fan is reassembled, and working again.

Kitesurfing explanation

I've noticed that there are a lot of instructables about making kites and making stuff to get pulled by your kite. But they all seem to assume one already knows how to kitesurf/control the dang kite, which is kind of an issue for people like me. I'd like to see an instructable with photos (maybe even video) of how to kitesurf, specifically omving the kite around and getting pull in various directions. With explaination in plain english of the headache-inducing technical terms. Sorry, but when I googled directions all I got was more confused. Of course, I'm thousands of miles from the nearest ocean, so I won't be doing this on the water probably (are reservoirs big enough?). In fact, I plan on learning all I can about how to control a kite so that I can go tool around out on the plains on a mountain board type thing. P.S. On a mountain board, do the trucks flex and turn the wheels somewhat like on a skateboard, or can I mount them rigid?

Any uses for a hand mixer?

I have recently inherited a powerful hand mixer. ex : images.google.com/images Making food has never been an interest to me, but I do have interest in the tool's potential. Inside the mixer is a 120V AC current (0.6A @60HZ) motor, along with several gears and the such.  This absolutely reeks of usefulness. I would normally already have half a million ideas for this, but problem is, I'm at an inventor's block. This is where I ask you to come in, instuctables.com. I want as many ideas for this as possible, I don't care how ridiculous.  Even if its a car that runs on pigsh*t, I won't mind.  anyway, just food for thought. thanks. ps. if you were one of the the whopping 13 people who viewed my forum topic, yes, this is a repost. I think my reasoning is pretty dang obvious. pps. I'm mad about not being able to use bold font anymore... we had something going...

we saved a baby rabbit

There were 5 rabbits but 2 died and 2 we haven't found the reason we know there are five is because we saw them the day before ,but didn't save them because we thought that the mother would come back Then the next day we saved them when we noticed only one was living. something sorta lucky happened... when we were on our vacation to Pennsylvania the rabbits cage tipped over and the rabbit got out and hid some where in our house. but my brother that stayed home so some one was there to look for him. He couldn't find him after like 2 hrs of looking he so he told my dog to find him and sure enough she sniffed him out in like 1 - 5 minutes. He ended up right behind the computer I am sitting at.... as I fix my grammar and spelling errors. he is also as big as a soft ball now :P that thing grows so dang fast.

Hey Guys.

Okay. 1st off, sorry about my long absence. I had a busy summer, and I'm kinda running low on motivation. I'm going to be checking back regularly soon though. 2nd off, sorry if I missed some of your folks comments. When I came back a few weeks ago I had a few hundred comments that I tried to respond to, so if I missed any or your questions or such, please post them again here. My bad. 3rd, I'm going to be posting a video of a huge project I've recently finished. No instructions, as its rather unique to my bathroom *cough*cough*. Also, I've decided I've had it with my danged safe. I'm going to strip away the casing I made and just post instructions for the new mech. I'm really just out of motivation for the project, and others have posted safes and such too, so its not so new and cool anymore. And finally, I want to build a cannon bigger than the V1. Will happen this winter hopefully. Thanks folks, ~IaC

Suggestion on repairing WIFI connection on Dell laptop Answered

I've reached my wits end with this dang machine! I've been fixing my mom's laptop, and I decided to just reinstall the OS...and I've ran into the strangest problem! Suggestions are welcome! Machine, DELL Inspiron 1525 OS, Vista Basic The problem: I'm unable to connect to a wifi network. The PC has an internal card, but it doesn't seem to know that it exists (since OS reinstall). In the Device Manager, there is no category called Network Adapters! It's totally gone! Everything else is in the device manager, like normal, but no network stuff!! What I've done so far: *I checked the BIOS and everything in the wifi category is enabled. *I ran a 'diagnose network problems' in the 'connect to a network' function. It says no driver for the device exists. I followed windows-help instructions on fixing this, but it says go to Device Manager, and select Network adapter... Unfortunetly, no such option is on the Device Manager list called Network Adapter. I have trouble searching the web for help with this problem because most solutions are specific to XP and not Vista Basic. I try following some of the XP solutions, but Vista gave different names for the same functions (to make it harder to use...lol) and I cannot get very far before I'm lost LOL

Instructables Book now in hands of mere mortals...(spoiler alert)

First off, naa-naa-na-na-na. I got my copy of the Best of Instructables, actually two that I purchased. The first copy has been thumbed through so much it is getting dog-eared. I would say it is a good mix of topics even though so much had to be left out.Which leads me to this rating, one thumbs up and one thumbs down.Kiteman was only quoted once - the Ubiquitous Kiteman, dang, I'm gonna have to look that one up , and listed in the back index. There was only a text list of winners for the favorites from the contest. No little pictures to show the final project. There is an acknowledgement page listing people and projects that were cut due to page limitations. Don't feel bad, even Kipkay made it on the list. There was a lot of stuff in the book I have not seen before so it just makes you want to wish for an easy way to scroll through everything on Instructables. The most interesting thing is the little tidbit bio's on the instructable's author/creator. This is quite a diverse community.I hope there will be a Volume II soon.edit- It was pointed out that Kiteman also wrote one of the intros. The book seems relatively Knex free except a few mentions in the contest listing. Good or bad depending on how you look at it.

Download Your Own Instructables Robot Cursors

There simply is no doubt that Instructables is an incredible website. Unfortunatley, one can not spend all their computer time browsing Instructables. Perhaps this is merely the realization of an unavoidable truth: that our busy lives don't leave enough time to faithfully give our respects to the orange robot who rules our bizarre craft-oriented cult. How could one possibly solve such a predicament? In true Instructables fashion, I decided to address this dire concern by making things myself! I decided my windows computer interface needed to be instructable-ized, so I appointed the instructaables robot as my official cursor. He has lights that blink, antennas that wiggle, and he clicks to my command. He has become a whole series of cursors that appear on my computer. If you fancy these little robot pointers, you may take one of each! I am sharing the cursors with my fellow indestructablers. Just un-zip the files, select them as your cursors in your computer's preferences and dang skippy, you got yourself a instructablized computer! Please tell me what you think, and thanks for reading, and hacking!  -Skyfinity Edit: I haven't once looked at this page since I wrote it ages ago. I was thirteen. I find it incredible that I grew up with Instructables and Maker culture as a whole. It's a gift only hundreds of strangers on the internet could give a young, aspiring creator. Also, I loved having these cursors.

need help connecting an led strip to a car speaker very confused!

Hi everyone i'm new to electronics so please bear with me. i have 2 led strips that i want to hook up to my car speaker . but idk how to hook up the leds to the speaker .i've seen plenty of tutorials about this but i am still confused. my led strips are rated for use only on 12 volts dc and are capable of 10 amps as it says on the sticker on the led strip. idk whether i need to build some sort of transformer or just simply hook up an led with a resistor. problem is i still cant figure out how to calculate the necessary resistor and ow much wat tolarance the resistor needs . my goal is to simply hook up the led to a toggle switch from radioshack and hook up the led so that it can pulse with the music and stay on forever as another option.but i dont want the leds to burn out from too much amperage or overuse with dangerous current to the leds. i also dont know about the transistor tip 31 i keep hearing about... and i keep hearing stuff that i need to hook it up to the car amp where do i find one in my vw passat and do i even really need to hook it directly to an amp i think i can just hook it up to a single speaker. dang some one please just help me sort out a way to hook my stuff up any information you need frome me dont hesitate to ask and im sorry  for any mispellings.

Building A SHTF Computer Using This Pistol Case, Need some Advice

So some time ago, i was at an Academy store and did an impulse purchase. Spent $50 on this durable, watertight pistol case as seen in the accompanied image. For a few weeks, i have just let it sit in my room and thinking about what to do with it. Then i thought "What about a Portable PC?". So i did some measurements, the interior is roughly 12x9x5 inches in Length, Width, and Depth (if you count the lid's interior). At best i have some components, such as a 10 Inch screen from an old netbook, i already have the controller board to make it a regular monitor for a few purposes. But a few things im not clear on is what components would best fit this case? I know its too small for most motherboards, and im not intending to use a Raspberry Pi or a Linux OS. And i also want to do as little drilling or cutting into the case as possible to retain its moisture resistance. If i had to list any criteria for such a build, there would be: Information Storage Connectivity to Larger Screens (aka stationary "tower") Wifi Capability Emergency Power Source Thats just off the top of my head, tbh. In short, im wanting to make a utilitarian computer that could survive (and possibly thrive) in a disaster situation of non-biblical proportions, all crammed into a case that was meant to hold a handgun. Keep in mind i have little to some electronics experience, but i have built a pc before. So who has any advice or what-have-you to point me in the right direction? (i hope this evolves into something pretty dang good. i do believe its kind of a challenge to pull something like this off, going with a case roughly half the size of your standard PC tower)

Alternative knex gun power source

I think this situation has happend to everyone once(pulls pin back)*SNAP!* "dang it, my rubber band broke"and let me say i HATE it when that happens, i got so tired of it that i decided to try an alternative, what did i use? Springs! I bought a pack of springs for $3 and lets say they work perfectly! they made my new sniper rifle fire over 80 feet before it hit the wall, so i dont know the exact range and i though i was set for a month of 2! ...well untill the 3rd day of useing them... the one i was useing got alot weaker i started to realise before i could hit the target on the wall without aiming upwards, now it dose not even reach 60 feet! (i noticed after i did my video) my first reaction was to check the breach load for any fragments of broken cartrages. none to be found. i thought "oh maybe the pin's tape has to be replaced (easy enough) as i took the main gun peice (the part of real barrel and breach load stuff not like handel or stock) it hit me! when i first used the gun my shoulder would pop and i could not get that strong in 3 days. and as i stared at the pin it seemed the spring had stretched! (this is a expantion spring so thats not good) now i am very upset cause i am on the 2nd spring and it took me forever! to get the pin exactly right the first time.so thats why this is here for any good ideas on how to have strong (yet long lasting) power sorces cause lets say RBs dont seem to like me and springs can get anoying and expencive.

Fun Facts about Pi Day

The Pi Day Pie Contest is open until March 31st. Share a pie recipe to win a stand mixer. There's even a special judge's prize for the best pi-themed decoration. This year's Pi Day is special, because it's Pi Day ALL MONTH LONG. The third month of the fourteenth year (3/14) lasts for the duration of March, and it won't happen again for another hundred years. So get baking! Some miscellaneous Pi facts: (1) Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pie is a baked dish made of sweet or savory filling wrapped in pastry dough. They are often, but not always, circular. Expressed in terms of pie, π is the ratio of the diameter of the pan to the length of the crust. (2) Pi didn’t always have a name, much less a sweet Greek letter of its own. Contemporary use of the π symbol is thanks to mathematician William Jones, who in 1706 proposed using the letter p to indicate perimeter. Leonhard Euler, the same guy who brought you functional notation in the form of f(x), popularized π by including it in his work around 1737. Euler is responsible for many of the letters that bedevil beginning algebra students: i for the square root of -1, e for the base of the natural logarithm, and much of the notation for trigonometric functions. There is a Wikipedia page devoted to the list of things named after him, and it is enough to make an English major blanche in terror. (3) Pi Day is officially a thing, at least in the United States. In 2009, House Resolution 224 officially recognized Pi Day as a holiday on March 14th. Presumably as a kick in the pants for the education system, not as a literal example of political pork. Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) supports the designation of a `Pi Day' and its celebration around the world; (2) recognizes the continuing importance of National Science Foundation's math and science education programs; and (3) encourages schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics. (4) Pi is vaguely described in 1 Kings 7:23-26 in the King James version of the Bible. Solomon's pool should probably have been 31.4 cubits around, but he deserves some credit for getting pretty dang close. (5) Pie Day is on January 23rd, according to the American Pie Council, but they're still cool with celebrating Pi Day with pies.

TR8-2015 Review

I received my TR from Killerk this morning. I've had a little hands on time with it so I'll write up my text review now, though I'll also be making a video review in the near future. For now, here's the unboxing and first impressions video: So just to start, I've never made a TR before. I have limited experience with turreted weapons. So what I knew about them I only got from videos and other people's reviews. I didn't doubt the TR was a great performing weapon, but I was wondering what all the hubbub was about. After finally messing around with one for the morning, I can see where the praise comes from. I also noted some things I'd still like improved, at least to personalize on my variant.   I'm going to use a grade scheme (because everyone's impressions on stars and scales are usually biased toward higher numbers). So, just to clarify, don't think of C as bad. It's average. I'll point out what's subjective. I'll nitpick a lot of little things, and I'll give credit where credit is due. Anywho, on to the review. Aesthetics: C+ My impression of the TR has always been that it's been a rather simple weapon. I'm a rather hard man to please in this category. The front is a tube barrel construction. I don't care for the looks of turrets because they're rather chunky for the amount of ammo they take up. The stock is a little skeletony. And it seemingly has weird support pieces thrown in random places. But it's not bad. It still looks like a good weapon. The stock has a nice design. It has a relatively clean cut design around the outside. Ultimately, I know most was for the sake of a strong, durable weapon, and I'll be sure to personalize it more.   Ergonomics: D+ This one I gotta be honest on. The handle just doesn't float my boat. My hands are shaped oddly so I've always made weird sorts of handles myself. While the tires are a cool concept, they help keep your grip on the weapon, and I thought they'd be comfortable, their edges tends to stick out and dig into my hands. They also bulk up handle in a way that my hand just doesn't easily fit it. Like, I know my Oodassault's handle is also rather big, but my hand still fit around it naturally with a flat back and indents around around my thumb and point finger web. But this is something I can customize in the future, so it's not the end of the world by any means. I can still use it as is without being in total pain.  The trigger is a bit different. Not uncomfortable, but not the way I like triggers. Something I'll want to change, but I don't want to compromise its strength, so I'm going to keep analyzing it. The stock is a bit compact. This is yet another preference thing, but I'd like it at a slightly longer length. The charging handle isn't too comfortable to use either. With the rear sight integrated into it, it's a bit difficult to get a good grip on, which is important when you have the bands loaded up on it.  And again, this is subjective so I'm sure I can improve it for my preferences and it'll be just fine. I otherwise appreciate what Killerk attempted here. The front grip on the other had is rather comfortable. I don't think I'll need to change that ever. Ease of Use: B Things look up from here. The ratchet mechanism wasn't immediately obvious to me, but with previous K'nexing experience, I figured it out. Still, I wouldn't trust a newbie to be able to pick it up and know how to use that part specifically without direction. So that's part of the reason it's not a higher grade, but again, nitpicking. It's otherwise incredibly useful to be able to wind the band without turning the turret itself. It lets you load ammo and then just twist the ratchet, which isn't too difficult, to make sure it loads after each shot.  When I change the charging handle to be more comfortable, I'll appreciate it much more. Having a charging handle on a weapon loaded up with a lot bands makes it a lot easier to use. The rail guides and the pin guide are all perfectly constructed to make sure it's a smooth, straight pullback.  On that note, back to the stock from an ease of use perspective, because it's a bit shorter than I'd like, I don't feel like I have proper leverage on the charging handle. It's one thing I like about pistols, being able to use both arms to pull apart the gun and the pin to make it easier to draw. For this weapon, it's recommended to shoulder the stock and push back against you, which would be a little easier for me with a longer stock. It probably won't be a problem for others. Overall, I think someone strong enough could pick it up and, with a little direction, figure it out pretty quickly. It's something I could easily teach a friend how to use and then they shouldn't have a problem with it. Reliability: A This is one of the areas where the TR shines. It's only not perfect because of a few possible things you can do to mess it up. Now, to be fair, I haven't fired it enough to have a misfire, but I doubt that'll ever be a problem. The nature of the turret itself means that you shouldn't have any problems. However, I'd worry about little things like bumping the turret in such a way it skips a round. The power transfer pins offer a point of failure for the gun if you're not careful. Removing a round requires you to manually push back in the pin to avoid accidentally firing off an empty chamber, which I can imagine might be bad. I'm also a wee bit skeptical about the trigger setup but it hasn't failed on me. I may want to make a safety mechanism for this weapon, though. Something that wouldn't allow the trigger to move out of the way of the pin at all. Construction: A-  It's pretty dang solid. I did notice (more nitpicking) that the handle connection creaks a little bit. So it's not perfectly solid, but Killerk did a pretty good job at constructing this in such a way there shouldn't be many points of failure. It held up in shipping after all. There are some odd support structures here and there, but then some areas that are either neglected, or he just didn't care about. Honestly, I have no idea what he added because he thought it was necessary, what he added because it looked cool, and what he added just because he could. So there are some things I might change for the sake of consistency and aesthetics, but it's otherwise something I'd trust be able to drop, pickup, and use just fine. I'd only worry about dropping it right on the turret.  Performance: A+ This is the one area you can say is perfect for the TR. Basically, it's designed to maximize power, and finned ammo are designed to be stable, thus increasing range and accuracy. The tube barrel minimizes the snag on the pin from hitting any gaps and gives the gun a solid mounting point for bands. The turret treats each round as a single shot. The length of the charging distance is maximized while still being practical. It's as good as you can do for a pin gun, and it's as accurate as you can make K'nex ammo with minimal modification/using entirely different materials.  Overall Thoughts as a War Weapon:  I'm not going to grade this because there's so much opinion thrown in here, it wouldn't be fair. I can see where this thing would be everyone's weapon of choice. It has an 8 round capacity, which seems limiting, but you can reload whenever you happen to find ammo, so in theory it shouldn't be a problem until you're rushed with low ammo. If fin ammo is allowed, then clearly it's the best you can do for a repeater at the moment. Without it, it's got the most effective range you'll possibly find for a pin gun, though it's just not as easy for me to prime as a pistol. It's a weapon more about picking your shots instead of dishing them out as fast as possible. I'll need to do some raw comparisons with my Oodassault pistol to see which I'd prefer after I see all the differences. For example, what if the range really does make a difference compared to the ease of recharging? I'll just have to make it to a war with both weapons sometime and see which I do better with. Overall Thoughts as a Fun Weapon: Its main novelty is the range and accuracy you get in a repeater. It's satisfying to shoot multiple rounds down range and hit your target with ease. Other than that, it's mostly featureless. It's not something I'd dink around with in the house (mostly out of fret of damaging the walls). It might impress my friends the first time they see it and how far it fires. The ratchet mechanism might also be cool to show. But after that, there isn't much wow factor. Not that you'd need much more. It shoots hard. That's all you'll need to wow someone with plastic and rubber bands. I'm personally the kind of guy that likes having things like realistic charging handles, removable magazines, adjustable stocks, etc. just for novelty's sake, but that's just me. This is a no-nonsense weapon built for performance, and in that regard it does very well. I'll keep mine around and make small modifications to it. I won't deconstruct it for pieces to make other weapons. It'll be nice to have a raw performance weapon around all the time so I can focus on new concepts without think "I wish I had something that fired well, I'm going to rebuild my Oodassault." So it's fun enough to be worth keeping.  Overall, I'd highly recommend making it at least once just to experience it, see what it's all about. If you enjoy performance, taking highly accurate and ranged shots at targets, you'll appreciate it. It's also pretty modular in that if you keep its base construction intact, you can personalize it reasonably well. Better weapons can be built just for the sake of having fun, so it's not something everyone might want to keep permanently, but if you have the pieces, I think a lot of people will like to keep it around, as many already have.
