Daylight Savings Time

Don't forget everyone, daylight savings time starts tonight so be sure to "Spring Back" your clocks 1 hour at 2am tonight. And additionally because last year was a leap year when your clock reaches 2am for a second time, spring back an additional hour. If you live in the southern hemisphere the directions should be reversed ie. spring back 2 hours at 1 am. Europeons, please substitute 100 minutes for one hour to account for the metric conversion.

make a daylight only wildlife feeder?

I want to create a feeder such as a tub with quarter inch mash on top and a motor in a timer that slides the mesh off at daylight and slides it closed at dusk. I want to attempt to train the local wildlife to show up during the day. a timer would work as well but I'm not sure how to set a motor to open and close the lid.

Hi, I bought a brand new Samsung TV with a broken screen in an auction. I have removed the panel and all modules (not needed) but can anybody tell me how to power the LEDs with a 12v (?) power source in order to make a daylight panel for a windowless room. Picture shows the LED units.Thank you in anticipation.

How do you repair the light sensor on a solar light that won't turn off in the daylight? Answered

I have one solar light that will not turn off in the daylight. There doesn't appear to be anything obstructing the sensor. The rechargeable batteries are being completely drained and will not recharge when in this particular light. I can recharge the batteries using a battery charger.

Jim Jablon made this GatorBike with the body of a dead alligator. Now he's going to raffle it off to raise some money for his wildlife rehabilitation center. These photos are only in the daylight. I'm hoping that he did something cool with the lights. Would be pretty sweet to see this thing cruising at night with a nice glow inside the gator's mouth. Link

long-term low-glowing light (like a night-light) with a PIR/ daylight sensor using a car battery

Hi Apologies in advance if this has already been asked many times, I tried looking through the archive and couldn't really find a solution to my project idea. I want to know if it is possible to create a long-term low-glowing light (pref with a PIR/ light sensor) powered by a car battery which I could leave in the woods (gently lighting up an ornament for example) and re-charge every couple of months? or even put an off-the-shelf style trickle solar panel onto which can be trailed into a sunny spot. I'm up for building something from parts, soldering LEDs etc but only tried in-car LED strips before straight to the battery and don't know how to source or insert a sensor to light up only when its dark or if someone approaches and preferably not having to charge the battery too often.. In an ideal world it could just sit there and only light up when somebody approaches it in the dark/twilight (do you get where I'm coming from?) Over to you guys! Thanks in advance!

How do I build a Circut to create temperature changes in LEDs? Looking for a range of 3000 to 6,000 for photography?

I see commercial lights for photography that can change color in the range of 3-6,000 or tungsten to daylight values. These are not arrays of three RGB lights but rather single LEDs and the combination create fairly substantial light sources.  Looking for a schematic for some sort of regulator.  Thanks Nathan

Automated dimming LED Aquarium light with moonlights? Answered

How do I make a Aquarium light that is automated simulating dawn and dusk, then turn on/off moonlights using LEDs? I want the system to be based upon time. The array of LEDs for daytime use can slowly 'awaken' over the course of an hour then the after a specified length of time, the daylights slowly turn off then start to slowly turn on moonlights. I saw an instructable that showed how to mimic the outside lighting to replicate that in the tank but I don't have my aquarium that close to a window so I'd rather it be based upon a programmable clock.

How to modify a night light to use led

I am trying to add creepy light up eyes to a tree monster.  I have a couple red led assemblies and thought instead of a switch to turn them on and off...I could just use an old night light with it's photocell and modify it to use the led assemblies and then it would turn off with the change in daylight. Unfortunately, I am a bit perplexed how to achieve this...I can't seem to get them photocell to work...when i connect the battery, the led lights come on, whether it's light or dark. Please help!

What type of lighting would you suggest for a trailer? Answered

My father recently bought an enclosed trailer to haul his tools in.  With daylight being so scarce in the Fall I thought it would be nice if it had a light source (or multiple) to illuminate it so he doesn't have to bring a flashlight with him to see inside.  I'd need it to be something that runs on 12 volts or less which I can take from the trailer hookup.  I was thinking maybe some led strips like the ones all over eBay but I thought I'd check here and see if anyone had any suggestions.

Solar power controlled pump photo cell shutoff?

I have a water feature in my front yard (small reservoir, and old style pitcher pump) that I ran on battery/solar power last summer. I would like to have the pump shut down during night time, but run during certain periods of the day. and charge a 12VDC battery via solar panels. I had it working last summer, with a small solar fountain pump, but it would run the battery down by continuing to operate after dark. There is no need for it to operate at night. I need a way to use a photo cell that would activate with daylight then de-activate at dark.

Black sky, massive and multiple flaming rocks from above impacting with devastating effect (some distance away, but close enough to feel shock-waves). Not like the image, more real and hot-burning coals like (but that's the best I could manage to get for 2 mins of searching)If it happens soon it's a premonition?(I also dreamed that some landlord-bast's had been in while I was out and cleaned my place out of all the junk and important stuff like my furniture, PC etc and moved the stuff out of the shed into my lounge, but that was a completely separate scene and in daylight...)I was glad to wake up!

Need Security Light Help Please

I'm trying to set up some security lights and I'm having some trouble. I don't really like the motion-sensor-activated lights that I've seen -- they all have the motion-switch right by the light -- I'd rather have them come on when either of two gates are opened (if a person is coming from the street) or if someone passes a spot on the walkway (if they're coming from the back building on this property) either with an eye-beam or, if it's cheaper, a motion detector, that's nowhere near the lights. I would like the lights to come on only at night and go off after about 5 mins. If possible, it would be nice if a noise could be played during the daylight hours. I've looked into delay timers and other devices but I'm really new to this, so any help would be appreciated

Minor flood - Check your overflows ! ! !

Just had a minor disaster here - Water dribbling through from the roof into the airing cupboard because the float valve on the hot water tank had stuck and the overflow pipe to the outside was blocked.  Rapid turning on of hot tap and leaning suicidally out of the window with a length of stiff copper wire to unblock the pipe averted a worse situation. The overflow appeared to be blocked with mud, and this is not the first time it happened.  Some years ago this happened in daylight and I could see the pipe was also full of mud and small pieces of stick.  I suspect that some insect - possibly a bee - had been nesting there.  Order of the day tomorrow is to put a one-way flap type arrangement over the overflow to stop it happening again. But this has also reminded me it's time to make some safer accommodation for bees, ladybirds etc for overwintering.  I'll be knocking up something like THIS tomorrow and maybe they'll leave my plumbing alone!

Automatic window cover motor

I have a problem in my apartment with an outdoor light right outside my window. If i dont close my curtains at night my room pretty much looks like daylight. I like to wake up to the sun though so I started looking at automatic curtain openers, saw the price and decided it cant be that hard to diy. My idea is to have a curtain that rolls up rather then goes to the side. I am trying to think of a way to make this simple cheap and quiet. really all I need is a rod and fairly quiet motor that I can plug into a wall. I was thinking a rotisserie motor would be pretty good but have never been near one to hear how loud they are. It might solve the problem of a rod as well depending on how long of a stick I can get for it. Anyone have any other ideas of a better way to do this?

Will a battery power a short LED light strip drawing 3 amps?

I am building a lighted mirror attached to a pole for conducting searches in tight places.  I have an 8.5" convex mirror which results in just over 25" of circumfrence.  I would like to use the LED light strip linked below to provide light to the area being searched and would like for it to be run off a battery source to make it easily manueverable.  I plan on using 2 ft of the LED rope.  The product specs indicate it should draw 3.0 amps.  Would a AA/series of AA batteries (or another small battery) power this light strip if wired into a switch and a battery pack? Thanks.

Interesting and alternative uses for electronics components? Answered

At my school, old wise men teach us all kinds of circuits and concepts, many using components in ways they were never intended for. Thermal cutoff for a power supply uses normal 4007 diodes as temperature sensors. Hollow pieces of stripped wiring plastic, heated slightly and used as heat shrink. Reverse voltage of an LED used to detect daylight and guide a solar tracking motor. 21W light bulbs used as constant current sources because of their PTC characteristics. Fuses made from single strands of copper, doubled up to handle greater current. There must be more. Using components and junk in ways they weren't intended opens up all kinds of possibilities for electronics people and students on tight budgets who don't have access to components and technology. Are there other smart ways to put the characteristics of certain parts to smart use?

Hi Guy's Im looking to build a Led controller that can operate a12v 600 leds in 4 channels 200wh 100red 100blue?

Each channel has two on times and two off times in a 24hr period. Each event ie; morning, can have 4 ramp times ie:red led channel comes on and rises red channel starting0% led power up to say 85% over a one hour period meanwhile the white channel comes on say 20 mins in to event and rises led up 0% to 100% over the hour and red led will fade out. This giving the effect of sunrise. There will be different light for different times of day.For the night the blue channel will fade in simulating the moon. There can be up to 256 stages of color. So a need a system controller that can control Both the time that a channel is turned on/off and the level of power that is put to that particular led channel. This project is for my aquarium. The idea is to be able to simulate daylight for the the fish that doesn't have a florescent light flashing on make fish jump. Sorry for the long explanation.I,m a electronic dunce sorry guys.Any help or advise would be very much appreciated Regards Jon

Help making an LED lamp

Alright, I want to make an LED grow light for my plants because the window I want to put them in doesn't get enough sun. I need quite a bit of light for this application and it will have to be on for a significant part of every day so LED is a must. I've been looking at the prices and it seems like the most economical option is to buy some LEDs off ebay, buy a driver... maybe some resistors... then mock up some kind of heat sink to connect them to. I was considering about 10-20 ten watt on chip LEDs. This light is going to be in a room I'm in a lot so I don't want to go with any funky colors. I'd like to just use daylight spectrum LEDs. Something around 6500k. Anyway, I'm thinking it makes the most sense to get one big driver to run all the LEDs rather than one driver for each. That just seems cheaper and frankly more interesting. But I need help understanding how to wire the whole thing together and understanding whether I need resistors etc. So I'm looking for some general help figuring out what to buy and then how to wire it all together. Thanks :)

solar battery amp hours and panel which one ?

Hello, I am working on a project that is solar powered. I am not sure what kind of solar battery i should get and equivalent  solar panel to charge it.. and regulator --- The parameters are: The 'show' will take place every hour for eight hours during daylight hours.. Each hour every 10 mins the system will switch ON and power will be needed to operate 25 automatic car antennas that draw about 0.8amps for about 1 minute show time. So every hour I will be drawing 25*0.8*6 = 120  ? -- I am new to this so i figure my calculations are wrong as 120amps seems a lot -- the system will also be powering an Arduino board which will be controlling the overall timing and puppetering of the work ie some coil relays or transistors for lower power consumption. this project will be installed in Germany in the summer with average sunlight conditions .. From my reading up on the subject I understand that it is not good to drain a battery, ideally half drain is max...could someone please advise what values i need for battery and solar panel.. thanks in advance .. Posting bug - again....

It seems the code monkeys worked on the problem of being unable to post when the server is busy at certain times. I no longer get the "Backend error" message :) Instead I now see nothing happening for quite a while, then just a popup stating "error". Try again a few minutes later and I get the good old backend error. This switches nicely back and forth. Being unable to post at certain times is one thing but getting utterly useless error messages for it is another story. And no, I am not in the mood to consider daylight saving times, timezones and so on to guess when I should better not click on the post button. Would it be too muchto ask after so many months of this problem existing that something is being done about it? If you can make postingspossible 24/7 than at least provide a meaningful error message that also states how much longer a user has to wait before he can post. It is an annoying error and one that is not necessary at all.... Edit: It seems this bug now messes with new postings as well. I only got a blank page when trying to click the "Preview topic" button and not even any error message at all. How about a free Instructables alarm clock for the pro members that shows the times of sheduled server works? ;)

Fireball over Colorado

What are the odds? On Oct. 28th at 7:29 pm Mountain Daylight Time, a random meteoroid hit Earth's atmosphere and disintegrated with the luminosity of a full Moon. The impact, which could've happened anywhere, took place directly above an all-sky video camera in Guffey, Colorado. "I've received more than 100 eyewitness reports," says astronomer Chris Peterson, who operates the camera as part of a nightly fireball monitoring program. Combining the data at hand, he estimates that "the meteor had a ground path about 170 miles long and traveled from east to west at 34 km/s (76,000 mph).""I was lucky enough to see it myself from inside my house through a window," adds Thomas Ashcraft. What's amazing about that is he was located 300 miles away in New Mexico. "It was brilliant turquoise and green and lasted more than nine seconds." Ashcraft is an amateur radio astronomer and his receivers picked up echoes of distant TV transmitters bouncing off the fireball's ionized trail: listen.Using a computer model of Earth's meteoroid environment, Bill Cooke of the Marshall Space Flight Center calculates that fireballs this bright come along once every five months or so. Rarely, however, are they witnessed. About 70% of all fireballs streak over uninhabited ocean while half appear during the day, invisible in sunny skies. To catch one in the crosshairs of a meteor camera on a dark albeit cloudy night is good luck indeed.Cloudbait SkycamOther observers caught video of the event, and recorded the radio noise it made. You could have recorded the event yourself, if you had followed this Instructable.Updates at SpaceWeather

New shed, new toy, new skills

I've got a new shed!  I am now the proud possessor of two sheds. The new one is just storage - garden chairs, tents (we have six tents, but there are only four people in the household - how did that happen?), lawnmower etc, which means I now have something novel in my original shed - space to work! At the same time, I've bought myself a new toy - a scroll saw (or fret saw, if you prefer), a Ferm FFZ-400N, if you're bothered by that kind of thing.  It's second hand, and only has one speed and no manual, but it was also only £20. So, I'm now practising - I bought some cheap ply, and I'm working on a new project, which I hope to post by Wednesday.  Unfortunately, there's a bit of a hiatus, since I've managed to snap the only blade I had.  What the heck, that's why they come in packs of ten, but I can't get a pack until Monday. Oh, and the shed: 6x4 foot "lap" shed from B&Q;, bought as a kit because I couldn't buy the raw materials anywhere near as cheaply. Basically, I got what I paid for - I spent as much time fixing the manufacturing faults as I did building it.  There are three fixes visible in the shot below, plus three fixes inside, not to mention the six or seven places where you can see daylight through the timber, and the very flexible window that will probably get sucked out by the first storm of winter... If you need a shed, and can only afford £135, then save up for something better.

How many hours of direct sunlight comes from north of the east west line?

We all know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.  And it is true 2 days a year!   The other 363 days it is untrue.  I found a neat little website that  gives a  visual representation  of the sunlight at any day of the year and at any location and  in summer quite a lot comes from the northeast and northwest in the mornings and evenings. (where I live at about 49 degrees north). I thought the rays represented 20 minutes of sun travel originally but now I am not so sure because the hours of daylight in a day do not correspond with the number of degrees of sunlight.  Does anybody know how fast the sun goes down? Does it appear to speed up as it goes down in summer or does it appear at its fastest around noon?  If it goes down faster than it goes at noon then there will be less hours of sun north of the east west line but if it goes slower, there will be more hours of sun north of that line. I would like to know how many hours of light  come from north of the east west line so that I can  give a guesstimate about how much more light my lean away greenhouse collects compared to a lean to.  The various websites are good for giving the sun up and sundown times and angles but none I have found give the corresponding times for the sun passing  the east west line in morning and evening. It is a tricky question and I can make a physical model to figure it out but maybe someone already knows the answer. In the diagram the sunrise is 5.11 am and sunset is 9.17 pm and the sun rises at 52 degrees and goes down at 308 degrees.  The degrees divided by 360 do not tally with the hours divided by 24  0.67 for the hours and 0,71 for the degrees. Thanks for any help Brian

Pressure system leak alert

Hi, from a brand new poster. I have a farm water pressure system in a shed, mostly watering troughs for stock. When there is a slow or fast leak, I waste water, at expense.  They could be broken valves to pin holes in pipes. The pressure is system is run by 240V mains, (Australia) via a plug into a socket, as normal. There is a smart meter in the shed. Stock generally don't drink much from midnight to 5am. If there is a constant leak, the pressure system will cycle during the night. What I want to know is, is there a way to trigger an indicator that shows the pressure system is cycling overnight between set hours (12 - 5am)?  Eg, a few cycles may be acceptable, 5-10 are not.  When noticed, I can go to the shed, further investigate, and reset the trigger. I also have capacity to read water pressure at my house, on the same system, which will fluctuate as the pressure system cycles.  If I could easily track and record the pressure fluctuations, I would also know if there is a leak. Apparently I could install a flow meter with a wifi or sms system, but that sounds expensive and complicated.  I don't use a flow meter as it is not needed. So we have power usage, pressure switch triggering, water flow, water pressure , noise, and pump heat as indicators, at the pump shed. I have line of sight to the shed from my house, about 500m away.  I could see any alert lights daily, both at dark in the evening, and in morning daylight.  They could be 240V or battery powered.  I am currently tapping into the pressure switch to run a light.  The problem is 1. I have to be awake then to check a light. 2. it takes time for long cycles to occur. For all I know there may be something available already, which I have not yet found. I don't have need, yet, to be alerted as an absentee manager (eg sms alert). I know there are fancy systems available for sale for that. Any technical ideas would be most welcome, thanks, including combinations of the engineers parameters - cheap, strong, quick.

By toothbrush to the stars!

A concept known as a space elevator has been "doing the rounds" as a cheap way into orbital space for several decades now.Basically, a cable of some description is anchored to an orbiting mass, and vehicles climb up and down the cable to transport materials and passengers to and from orbital space cheaply and easily (in any space journey, the most expensive and dangerous parts of the journey are the first and last few kilometres). There are, technologically speaking, two main hurdles - the cable, and the vehicles.Carbon nanotube composites are a strong contender for the cable, but travelling up and down the cable takes power. Rockets are out of the question (what would be the point of the cable?). The hours, possibly days, of the journey make batteries unfeasible, and the turbulence of the atmosphere precludes the use of PV panels large enough to power the vehicles from daylight. That leaves transmitted power. So far, the transmission ideas have been electromagnetic - lasers aimed at smaller PV panels on the underside of the vehicles, or microwaves aimed at receiver dishes. Now, a new proposal suggests transmitting the energy mechanically.European Space Agency ground station engineer Dr Riise ... proposed sending power mechanically - effectively by providing a carefully timed jerk of the cable at its base.To demonstrate, he employed a broomstick to represent the cable held in tension, and an electric sander to provide a rhythmic vibration to the bottom of the stick.Around the broomstick's circumference he tied three brushes representing the climber with their bristles pointing downwards - meaning it took slightly more force to lower the brush assembly than to raise it.The vibration from the sander allowed the assembly to slide upward along the broomstick as it moved slightly downward, but grip it as it moved slightly upward. The net effect: the assembly rose against gravity straight to the top of the stick. That's a bristlebot (or vibrobot)! Dr Riise, though, calls it a longitudinal wave climber or LWC.It sounds easy enough to replicate the demonstration model, although I can't imagine how you would efficiently vibrate a 36,000km cable (I have images of damaging harmonics getting set up as the moving carriages change the effective length of the vibrating part of the cable, and shaking important bits off the vehicles).Apparently, though, the idea is being looked at by lift manufacturers for installation in the next generation of super skyscrapers.Demonstration videoBBC story

GID Vials, Tritium, TRASERS, Powders and Chemicals GLOW IN THE DARK!

TRITIUM! So I get a lot of questions from my post and instructables. Tritium Vials are Radioactive Hydrogen H3, also known as hydrogen-3 is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It is contained in small glass vials coated in colored phosphor then encased in glass or sealed plastics. These are commonly seen in Gun Sights, Watches (TRASERS) and some Emergency Exit Signs. Small amounts are legal and for approved uses. Read the NRC guides Typically the Trit vials are small, expensive and dim. The latest GID (Glow in the Dark) Chemsticks, LED's and GID Powders or paints seems much more effective and usable. * Cyalume, as used in a lightsticks, emits light by chemiluminescence of a fluorescent dye (also called fluorescor) activated by cyalume reacting with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium salicylate. It is the most efficient chemiluminescent reaction known. up to 15% quantum efficiency. New LED low power requirements and high Lumen or light output have provided many solutions that are low cost, high power and longer lasting. GID Paint or Powders are "charged" with light or daylight sources as with your traditional kids toys or stickers. New products are brighter, glow longer and are now waterproof, have many colors and applications. Also this is occasionally confused with the chemical illumination. However these paints powders and materials use common phosphorescent materials include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. Use of zinc sulfide for safety related products dates back to the 1930s. However, the development of strontium oxide aluminate, with a luminance approximately 10 times greater than zinc sulfide, has relegated most zinc sulfide based products to the novelty category. Strontium oxide aluminate based pigments are now used in exit signs, pathway marking, and other safety related signage. Hope this helps! 01/2011 - Update Source for Materials ERCK Additional Tritium Resources * U.S. NRC: * U.S. EPA: * U.S. DOE (Argonne National Lab): * California EPA: * University of Idaho:

Direction/turn signal indicators making them brighter with led bulb I need help pls

Hi. I somtimes ride a 1985 yamaha ms50 pogal 50cc moped. It has an 6v electrial system where as modern day scooters are 12v. I bought a knew indicater relay for it and checked all the bulbs as the turn signal indicators are not so easy to see flashing. I mean, on average sunny day other road users would need to look hard to see them flashing. the bulbs are 6v 15w and both old and knew flasher relays gives output of 6v 40w. I would feel much safer when turning if I had a bulb that gives a brighter flash to give other road users a better idea when im turning. I can see on the web there is a 6v 5w and 10w bulb I can try or even 6v leds but I dont know much about leds. the stanadard factory fitted indicater buld 6v 15w gives an ok flash at night, but in sunny daylight I would need to be close up to see it flash which is no good! I don't want to change the originality of this little ped since it has been carefully taken care of over the years and has made it in intact into current times as is. I need to come up with somthing that will work and if I replace a buld with a 5w or 10w when it should be 15w I may get a brigher flash or just blow the bulb. I wonder was there a problem or just bad design with the indicator lights on the yamaha ms50 pogal when they first came out in the 1980's as I have seen a couple of them fitted with suzuki fz50 indicators and other makes of bike turn signal indicaters on them. I don't think the flashers are faulty I feel they where just made that way. I could be wrong. I suppose there could be a bad earth on the flashers. Sorry to go on so much about this. Im looking for your suggestions for a brighter indicator flashers which is purely for safety reasons. If car drivers can see where im turning, im less at risk of being nocked off by them. Im thinking a higher or lower wattage incandescent 6v buld or even a replacment 6v led buld ive seen on ebay but as I said. I know nothing about led bulbs or even if they will work on my moped. Would a equivalent 6v 15w led give a brigher flash than a 6v 15w tradisional incandesant bulb? can someone help me here pls Here's the led ive seen on ebay;=item4d08c3be3d these are the standard 6v 15w bulbs i want to replace with brighter led bulbs
