Co2 cartridge cannon? Answered

Hi ... in a quandary, and having problems on were to start.  Drawing a blank.  I need to develope a small Co2 cartridge Cannon that will be placed into a 1/12 scale RC airplane, that will be used to deploy a drouge parachute on command.  Can anyone provide me with a starting point?  Do you by chance have something all ready in your files that can be used.  The drouge shute when deployed, is 72" in diameter, and the package that contains the parachute is 3 x 3 x 3.  It needs to be projected at lease six feet from the airplane before opening up. Thank you very much,  for any assistance that you can provide.  Richard T Leiterman ( KE6RIM )

Repaired plain-text editor -- preview doesn't respect line breaks

Thanks again to Rachel for deploying a fully operational plain-text editor!  I've just noticed a minor, but slightly annoying, bug.  When I use the preview link, all the text is run together just as it used to be, but when I actually post the comment, everything is fine. This misled me the first time, and I went back and stuck in HTML paragraph tags to "correct" the problem.

A look at recent FireFox 3 vulnerabliities...Heads up

True to form, Billy Rios promised a more in depth look at the MSFA2008-35 vulnerability which is another protocol handler flaw in Firefox 3. As previously reported here, this was another protocol handler flaw that led to arbitrary remote command execution, and is especially dangerous since it can be deployed widely through the use of a cross-site scripting attack vector. Note, Firefox3 no longer registers the Gopher protocol handler, which is a great security decision.Site Link - ZDNet

Annoyance: Formatting/URL mistakes suppress preview completely

A new feature deployed recently checks the URLs we put inside comments (i.e., the first token inside square brackets) and reports if we haven't given a valid URL.The annoying bug is that the whole preview is suppressed, and there is no indication of where in the text the error might be. Briefly, the preview actually showed the whole text, but with the error part called out in big red box. That was better, and would be nice to get back.Failing that, maybe just putting the malformed URL into the preview as a literal string, highlighted or underlined or something might be helpful.

How to make coughing powder that will effect animals. Answered

I have always wanted to make a coughing powder that could be thrown into the air and would make animals (who breathed it in) cough like crazy so they will be distracted while I escape . How could I make something like this but have it not be toxic to my subjects? Another things is a question on how I would deploy it. I don't want to use a straw or anything small, but something that would distribute it amounts large enough to distract a bear. By the way I was looking for ingredients from home.

How can I build an electricity monitoring and control system?

The service will be to install energy monitoring equipment in a premises which records kW hours electricity usage and also voltage fluctuations. This data will be collected every few seconds, but summarized every few minutes. The recorded data will be transmitted to local data hubs and then over the internet to analysis software providing outputs which are meaningful to management. Several monitoring devices will be deployed in a building so that data can be collected in individual circuits or individual electrical machines. Additionally there is a requirement to control devices remotely so that they may be switched or moderated remotely. Thus for example, a heater might have a thermostat setting adjusted or be switched on or off.

I was hoping to pimp out my bike with James Bond esque weapons. An example would be a way to deploy oil, tacks, smoke, or water out the back of the bike. Rockets wouldn't be so bad either. Mines or flame thrower would be great. Try mounting the control box on the handle bars. I do have basic Oxy-acetylene setup that is good for all around jobs. I also have black powder and other chemicals like KNO3. Please leave a picture below of the project with details, plans, etc. etc. I know there are a lot of bright minds out there who would find this fun and challenging project tailor-made for them.

Question by bonze77

DEPLOYABLE FIRE ESCAPES for TOWERING BUILDINGS

The “9/11” World Trade Center disaster horrified Americans as they witnessed people leaping out of 100 story windows to their death. There was simply no available escape system to facilitate a safe yet quick evacuation to the ground floor. Elevators weren’t working and internal staircases were blocked by sporadic debris, black smoke and fires. The situation was virtually hopeless to the point where many chose to jump rather than be burned alive. So here we are, with technology capable of constructing 100+ story buildings but without the means for external fire-escapes. Unfortunately, the public isn’t aware that at our current level of technology we can finally address this problem with our architects. We are talking about a means to rapidly deploy a flexible escape tube-chute from 100+ stories that hangs along a guy-wire which is pre-attached to our escape floor and anchored to the ground (Fig-1). This tube-chute escape system will deliver a person from 100-stories down to ground level and safely outside the building in under 10-minutes. Prior to deployment, the entire system is housed inside a container that is either attached to the outside of the building or built into a structured wall, opening to the outside at various floor levels. When in deployment, the inlet of the flexible escape tube will be anchored to the outside wall of a designated escape window and contain an inner diameter sufficiently sized to accommodate an individual. The tube’s exit end is tethered to a rope-wire that runs down our permanently located guy-wire, through a series of guy-wire slip-rings, and quickly pulls the tube's exit end to ground. The rope-wire is permanently attached to a winch-motor located on the ground. During deployment, the winch pulls the tube’s rope-wire down to ground level by slipping along the guy-wire rings. As the tube-chute deploys downward, it automatically forms a spiral about the guy-wire, creating a very long escape slide that gets anchored to the ground. A fully deployed tube-chute exhibits three basic attachments for stability: 1) a set of flexible slip-rings and tethers attached between the permanent guy-wire and tube to form its downward spiral, 2) a tube-chute inlet anchored to the outside of the building at various floor levels, and 3) a tube-chute exit anchored to the ground and providing a fully deployed and reliable escape system ready for use. As each person enters the tube-chute, they are only aware of the outside winds which buffet the tube plus the internally hanging cloth fingers used to slow their descent as they slide down to safety. They are not aware of any height and feel relatively secure due to their complete envelopment by both the tube and its touching fingers.  A 100-story descent would take about 6-to-10-minutes to reach the outside safety of ground while travelling at a speed of roughly 5-fps (3.5 MPH) as regulated by the spiral-ramp and internal cloth-fingers retarding gravity.   Technical  Details: The tube-chute is reinforced by a sewn-in spiral wire that gives it strength and flexibility. Its tube is made of heavy duty nylon, much like the large yet light air-hoses used on many high stress applications today. The tube cork-screws its way down and around a permanently deployed guy-wire that stretches from the designated floor of the building to the ground. The tube is sized for a person to enter and slide down the spiraling pathway until he reaches ground level. Gravity will act to propel the sliding individual down the tube. To counter gravity, we rely on the tube’s spiraling design to produce a gradually declining ramp that slows and checks an individual’s descent speed. The number of spirals and ramp-angle necessary to reach the ground will be sized to limit the gravity-induced speed so as not to endanger an individual’s sliding descent. That and the internally hanging cloth fingers guard against excessive speeds and will prevent skin-burns from the sliding friction. The tube’s nylon material is impregnated with anti-flammable chemistry and its exterior is aluminized to prevent radiative heatloads from causing a fire due to either direct flames or the radiant heat from indirect flames. A final note on the overall weight for this flexible tube-chute structure. Clearly, since we are designing a deployable fire-escape system, its weight must be kept to a minimum for deployment safety and reliability. Items such as the cloth materials, tube-wire reinforcements, and spiraling tube tether attachments must be carefully chosen for weight, strength and durability. While issues of weathering may not be that important, as it will be housed and protected from the elements, the shelf life of the various materials chosen is of paramount importance.

How to increase life of a device using 3.7v li rechargeable? Wire second in parallel? Use battery with higher mAh?

Hi All Looking for some advice for a project I am working on. I am using mini-GPS trackers with a SIM card to track movements of small objects, so size is an issue. I have a GPS tracker I like that comes 3.7 v rechargeable lithium ion battery, I think it's something like 700 mAh (I will have to double check when I get home). Once removed from the case, the battery and card fit into the space of the objects I am tracking (spheres of about 45 mm diameter, so a little bigger than ping pong balls). Anyway, using the settings necessary for tracking these objects, the tracker only lasts 3-4 days before it's out of battery, and I would like it to last 10-14 days, ideally. How might I go about extending battery life once the trackers are deployed? Should I add a second identical battery in parallel? Try to find a rechargeable battery with same voltage and higher mAh? (And does increasing mAh increase battery size?) Cost and size are issues, and I also wonder if I could replace the batteries with, say, a disposable battery type in order to get more time -- I don't expect to recover the units after they are deployed. Normally replacing a rechargeable lithium ion battery with disposables would be dumb, I don't know enough about batteries in general to know if disposables of the same size/voltage might have more "oomph". Thanks for any thoughts or advice you can offer!

Covering

I am building a Sig Tiger rubber band-powered model. I know it's wimpy, but I don't have a budget for anything larger, or a place to fly it. My question is if anyone has experience with model airplane covering. Specifically, I read an article in an old RC Modeler magazine that said plastic wrap, attached with a glue stick, made excellent covering for light models, but that Monokote and Ultrakote will crush light balsa models when it shrinks. Has anyone ever tried this? I'm supposed to use tissue, according to the plans, but ew.Also, I have an ancient U-Control Waco SRE biplane that my uncle built when he was deployed to Korea. It has an old O.S. Max III 35 that has no hope of running again, but I want to at least recover it. Any suggestions for removing old covering? It seems to be Monokote-type stuff.

New comment editor -- nice, but badly slow to load

So I like the new comment editor that's been deployed.  It looks just like the "standard" edit boxes with formatting icons across the top (including the silly pseudo-Micros**t tab edges that don't do anything). However, it is really slow to load.  I timed it a over fifteen seconds just now.  I was able to type in the whole title and keywords for this posting before the edit box was ready to be used.  Caching the icons doesn't seem to be the issue, as this is the third edit box I've opened this morning.  Unless that speed can be improved, this may create more irritation and complaints than it's worth.(Minor update, looks like Eric's announcement that re-editing wouldn't work has been fixed.)

Site software priorities -- aesthetic alterations vs. repairing functionality?

(Yes, this is a rant.  "Suggestions" are implicit in my complaints...) I am curious as to where the rather long list of known and reported bugs falls with respect to priorities regarding the I'bles server software. For the past few weeks, it has been clear that I'ble staff are "experimenting" with altering the appearance and available features of the sites pages.  Switching information around, removing primary category links, eliminating classified lists within categories. Certainly developing and deploying new features, which add value to the site and thereby (hopefully!) increase revenue, should be a high priority for limited staff resources.  However, it doesn't seem quite so obvious that removing features, or tweaking things like font size and color (which for accessibility should be under control of the browser, anyway), really deserve precedence over repairing problems that have been known for months or years.

Laser detector array?

Hi ladies and gentlemen! I am looking to build a proof of concept, then a prototype on a laser detector array. I need a setup that will pick up a laser beam directed at it from up to 200M away. My idea was to use an array of photovoltaic cells hooked up in pattern. When a laser hit one or more of the cells the current would trip a relay that passed the current to a buzzer or alarm. My concern was that sunlight and ambient refection will cause false signals and trip the alarm. I am sure there is a way to set the system up so that the alarm only went off when there was a voltage spike in a single sensor, or put a variable resistor on it so that only light levels above ambient would set it off. The system will be deployed facing down towards the ground so direct sunlight should never hit the array. I would like to start off with a single photovoltaic cell to prove that the system works and then integrate the others to form the array. Thanks for the help!

mission of sputnik 1

Russian technology satellite. One launch, 1957.10.04. Tikhonravov's 1.4 metric ton ISZ satellite was to have been launched by the new R-7 ICBM as the Soviet Union's first satellite, during the International Geophysical Year.    But it was not ready in time, so Korolev hurriedly developed Sputnik 1 as a replacement. It became the first artificial satellite of the earth. Sputnik 1 had 1 watt of power, producing an 0.4 second duration signal on the 7 and 15 m bands. Four antennae were deployed at 35 degree angles. Power was provided by three silver-zinc batteries. Thermo-regulation was by a ventilator. The 580 mm sphere had a mass of 83 kg and was made of highly polished Aluminum AMG6T alloy 2 mm thick. It was built without drawings due to the quick time schedule. Korolev was everywhere, supervising all aspects of its construction. It functioned for 21 days.      AKA: PS-1. Gross mass: 84 kg (185 lb). First date: 1957-10-04. Number: 1 .     the word sputnik is russian word for traveller

electronic numeric display board for volleyball

I have searched the Internet hard for a reasonably priced electronic numeric display board to no avail.  I am interested in constructing a remote control scoreboard for volleyball similar to basketball scoreboards deployed in high schools.  For many years I have played and continue to play a LOT of drop in volleyball at various local Rec Centers.  It would be great to be able to keep track of the score with a remote control device in your pocket while playing the game. Alternatively please let me know of any high schools being torn down which could be an opportunity to save a basketball scoreboard that would otherwise be relegated to a land fill site. When you think about the utility of such a device, why hasn't this project been done before?  Maybe it has and if you have any info then PLEASE forward.   I would seriously entertain any posted price for such a completed device if it exists as the hero factor is huge.  The advantage of building it yourself is that you are in a position to manufacture duplicates for others and you become the repair man. The bigger the display board, the better.  I know they exist but are mostly cost prohibitive.  At this point I am prepared to start with a small display for the prototype in order to get this project started since I am very enthused.

Can't delete, unpublish, or make instructables private.

For about a year, I've been trying to get rid of a few select instructables and I keep getting error messages. I've tried unpublishing(error 401), deleting, and now that I got PRO, turning an instructable private. The error messages usually tel me that I can't unpublish because the instructable is entered in a contest. It doesn't tell me which contest(I've entered dozens) and once I've found the contest, there's no way for me to remove an instructable from it. Windows 7 Google Chrome Version 24.0.1312.57 m Instructable I was trying to turn private Page I was brought to Text from the page I was brought to: 500 Servlet Exception javax.servlet.ServletException: javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: ServletException in '/common/layout1col.jspx': org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException: could not initialize proxy - Help... PCF8574T (Expanding "Nano's" Digital Outputs)

- When I saw my RGB Chromatograph clock my teacher built from a kit  I was so impressed with it I  jumped the gun & ordered the parts so I could make one with an arduino version, I never thought much about it, thats so simple I could do in a few hours no problem except I overlooked one simple thing.... This clock uses six 10mm RGB Leds, two for the hour, two for the minutes & two for the seconds, each led has 3 inputs & 1 ground, thats a total of 18 outputs,  thats not including a few other inputs used for status indicators, along with a few inputs for buttons, the problem is that a Nano doesnt have enough digital outputs & I completely overlooked that fact. Anyways I started looking for I/O expanders when I realized that I have a few 1602 displays & PCF8574T backpacks, I have heard some people claim that it can be used to provide an additional 16 digital outputs, if true then it that would resolve my issue very easy Has anyone done this? or example sketch how I could deploy the PCF8574 this way, for example a blink sketch that defines a pin on the PCF8574 as an outputs & turns on a LED connected to the pin Thank you much...

IoT data logger for large file transfers - what protocol to use? (FTP, HTTP, MQTT, …)

Hi there, We manufacture CAN bus data loggers for use in e.g. cars, trucks etc.The logger records data to an SD card. When the logger is in range of a WiFi/Cellular hotspot, it will start pushing the data to a specified server. The files will be ½-20 MB in size and need to be transferred frequently (e.g. every few seconds). A user can have 100-300 loggers deployed, all sending data to the server simultaneously. Today, we handle this using the FTP protocol. It’s been a simple solution that most users understand. However, we fear it’s not future proof and we’d like to look into other options (e.g. HTTP, MQTT) - in particular also to enable easy transfers to e.g. Amazon/Google cloud servers.A few questions that we’d like input on:What do you believe would be the best protocol for the case described above? Do you have any examples of use cases, APIs, open source code etc. in such applications? If we switch from FTP to another protocol, is there a way to keep it simple for our “less techy” users that do not use e.g. Amazon/Google servers, but just their own PCs?Thanks a ton for your inputs! Martin

Pig farmer proves that great ideas can come from anywhere

Here's a story with a great moral to it. If you're observant, then you can come up with a brilliant solution to a problem. And it doesn't matter if you went to a fancy design school for it or just need to solve a problem. Canadian pig farmer Mary Haugh had a problem; multiple heart attacks put her husband out of commission, and she alone had to somehow control and herd their 3,000 hogs through the barn. Traditional methods of getting pigs to move are to use a stick, an electric prod or a "chase board," a length of wood the farmer wields horizontally to angle the pigs in a particular direction.Haugh then came up with a roller that dispenses a swath of red cloth--a sort of farm version of the retractable "lane guides" that movie theaters use. Working with her brother Peter Jones, a mechanical engineer, she developed a 30-pound stainless steel prototype that retracted fabric like a windowshade and could unspool 50 feet of material. The pair also designed it so one end could attach to existing stabling, enabling one-person operation. The resulting product rolls up neatly, can easily be carried and deployed by one person, and meets Canadian standards for biosecurity as it can be washed with the pressure washers most farmers already own to clean other equipment. More importantly, it works far better than anything that came before it--testing trials reveal it saves 70% of the time needed to herd hogs, which translates to hours per week. link

DIY Blackout Blinds?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to create a super cheap, super easy way to create some blackout shades for my bedroom without buying expensive custom-sized blackout blinds? I fact, I already have custom-sized blackout blinds -- except they're roller blinds, and when they're deployed, although their size is exactly the same as my windows (about 70" wide by 20" tall) when they're rolled down, and the sun is shining on them, the light literally blasts through on all sides, rendering them almost useless. What  I need is a light barrier that makes the room pitch dark even if the sun is blasting directly on the windows. I looked at this site: http://www.blackoutez.com -- but after ordering, and even if they do ship to Canada, it's liable to be prohibitively expensive. What I need is something cheap, easily mountable, easily unmountable and able to be stowed in a closet every day, then brought out every night for the next day. I thought of using those dollar store poster boards, maybe taped together with duct tape. Black ones would probably do a good job of blocking the light and they're pretty big -- maybe 48" x 36" -- but there is still the problem of how to attach them to the tops of the windows. So again, here are the criteria: Cheap, maybe less than $50 all together Block ALL light completely Easily mounted, easily unmounted Able to be stowed quickly and easily Durable, able to be used every day for months Able to recite the Gettysburg Address with no cue cards (Okay, I'm willing to forego the last one!) Turn your inner geniuses loose! Thanks in advance Nickster

PRESIDENT & GOVERNMENT

OK, I've been a sneaky DIY for a while now, just stealing idea's but not really contributing. Bummer. In my defense I'm currently deployed to Iraq OIF 07-09. Question is what would YOU do as President? How would you help the American people? Background, I'm a gemini, and hope i don't get so out of hand i get banned. (Please keep your input on the U.S. only) Ok, so here i go..... If I was Pres I would round up certain people with certain things (say bums, or the sick and diseased) and "off" them. I would stop competition in consumer goods (ie, why sell energy saving light bulbs, and the crappy ones as well) I would force companies to comply to a higher standard for the greater good.<---this part IS communistic, but only for consumer goods that go to market. If President, I would have large meetings INHOUSE, i would not leave my country to "talk" to other countries, I have a phone, or a VP/VIP i could send. These meetings would gather expert people, in whatever field... for instance the internet, and would make it run flawlessly..... no dead links, no BS info, mmmmm sounds good. I would make a government website, FOR THE PEOPLE, (created by the best web guru's, government guarenteed secure) and it would more or less be an online census, it would be your forced load page.... you couldnt have fun on the web without answering a few questions, about anything. of course personal info, CIA FBI stuff, but mainly for an immediate update as to what the people want, when they want it, and how they expect it done......man ive so soo much more... thats all for now. Call me crazy, i dont care....... what would you do?

Idea for robot project

I'd like to put in for a scholarship robot. I'm on a postdoc currently, working with the Avida artificial life software. I am working on experiments that will utilize moving Avidians. My idea for an iRobot Create contest entry is to use the robot to instantiate the program used by an Avidian evolved to perform a task based on finding "food" and avoiding "poison". The Avidian genome is a sequence of instructions in a virtual machine language, so on the software side the project involves translating between the Avidian code instructions and the instructions needed to have to the Create robot do the analogous action or computation. On the hardware side, I will need to find an analogous set of sensors to permit the Create robot to perform the same sort of evaluation of its laboratory environment as the Avidian makes of its virtual environment. As an example, an Avidian may detect the presence of an adjacent resource, and utilize input to get information about it. An infrared or visible light sensor might be deployed in an analogous way, where a resource object may give a different reading from empty floor, and some attribute of that reading may distinguish what will be treated as "food" from what will be treated as "poison". One thing to note is that I don't have any immediate plan to implement anything like a neural net system for the Create robot; this would be a straightforward translation of Avidian code to make a program to run the Create robot. Part of what this can demonstrate is the emergence of aspects of behavior that can be considered intelligent, and the ability to instantiate such evolved programs in a physical system like the Create robot.Avidian runs take part of a day to a few days to complete. The Avida instruction set is fairly compact, and is made to be able to permit universal computation. I don't think anything too complex is needed in the way of sensory systems to provide enough data for telling apart two classes of objects. I believe that my idea is feasible to complete by the contest deadline.

The Stair-Climber: My Idea for the Scholarship Contest

My name is Brian Smith and I am a recent graduate of Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina. I have done research in the field of robotics in the past for science competitions. I will be attending Georgia Tech beginning in the fall. What I would like to do with the iRobot Create is simply to extend the original functionality of the Roomba by allowing the robot to both scale and vacuum a carpeted staircase. From a functional perspective, ideally the robot would clean the first floor of a a two story house for some predetermined period of time, and then climb the stairs, cleaning them on ascent. The robot would then clean the second floor of the house for a predetermined period of time before descending the stairs once more to recharge and then begin the cycle again. As far as implementation is concerned, the first step of the cleaning process is quite straightforward; the robot will clean the first floor randomly using the same or similar algorithms as the Roomba. After the predetermined cleaning period for the first floor has elapsed, things get a bit more complicated. The robot will then seek out an infrared beacon marking the base of the staircase to begin ascending/cleaning the stairs. For this task, the mechanics of the system will be just as important as the software. Essentially, the robot must square itself with the first stair at which point it will deploy its equipped "stair rails" which creates a ramp which the robot can use to ascend the first stair. The robot then collects the rails, cleans the first step, and redeploys the rails to ascend the second step. This process continues for each step until the robot reaches the second floor of the house. The then robot resumes random cleaning of the second floor. By similar principles, the robot then descends the stairs and finds its recharging station on the first floor. Although I feel that this project will be challenging, I also feel that it is reasonably within my capabilities to be completed by the deadline.

How to configure clients with WSUS? Answered

Hi!  I am working in a tech shop, and one of the things we do quite often is download and install windows updates on client computers.  The problem is that we are in a isolated area and have painfully slow internet.  I built a server with the idea of using WSUS to speed up the update process by having the clients download the updates from a local server.  I had done this in an AD environment before at another job that I had, but when I was planning this project for this job, I forgot that I had to use GP to deploy it the last time I did it, and A.  I don't want to be configuring GP on consumer computers, and B.  Most computers that we work on are Windows Home Edition, not Professional, so they don't even have GP.  Is there a way to configure my server to "intercept" requests to update.microsoft.com and just respond within our local network?  I tried pointing a DNS A record for update.microsoft.com to our local server, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work (is WSUS a different port or protocol than update.microsoft.com maybe?).  In addition, whenever I want to sync updates on the server with that DNS entry, I would have to delete the DNS entry temporarily, since WSUS services will use the DNS server on my local server no matter what (I have tried telling the server NIC to use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as it's DNS server, and also adding an entry to the hosts file to point it to update.microsoft.com on the server, but it always overrides and uses the DNS entry from my local server). Frankly, I'm not even sure that what I'm trying to do is possible.  If it isn't, my next idea was to create a script that our technicians and I can run on client computers to quickly switch the WSUS server settings to our local server and then when we are done switch them back to Microsoft.  But would that even work on Home edition computers, or just Professional editions? Thanks for your help!
