Product Designers & Engineers UK

Hi everyone! I’ve got a project underway and I’m at the stage of looking for product designers and engineers based in the UK, preferably in the South East. I’ve posted in the “Wanted” section of the forums as this wouldn’t initially be paid, more of a collaboration to start, with the goal of turning it into a realistic product/business. Looking for people who have an understanding of (what I believe would be) advanced PCB design, setting up basic SoCs, with a view for mass production. If anyone has any advice on where to find people with these skills, or knows anyone who would be interested, any help would be greatly appreciated! Kind regards, Mike

DESIGN tutorials!

I've been looking around, and it seems like generally instructables users are not web/graphics designers. There needs to be a section for the design tutorials!!! Anyways when my schedule frees up in the future, I'll add some flash and dreamweaver tutorials... otherwise there is a major lacking of web DIY instructables! what you guys think? Dont you guys wanna learn how to DIY (design it yourself)? I am talkin about design here, not art.

Gear design

Hello there, I was wondering if you could help me: I need a simple program to design a basic gear, a pair of twin wheels. I need to set the number of cogs and the diameter of the wheels; this mechanism has to be as tight as possible. The idea is to print the wheels on paper and then cut a metal sheet accordingly; can you tell me a way to transfer the image directly on the metal? That would be of great help... Thanks.

PCB design?

Why do modern PCBs always use straight tracks and 45-degree diagonal tracks? I know it is good practice and design all my boards to this standard, but is there a reason behind it other than it looks visually appealing. It appears only relatively modern boards took this into account, I was looking at some 1970's electronics and quite a lot of them have rounded tracks of no definite thickness.

Circuit design

Hi, I’m hoping someone could help me. I’m looking to design a circuit for a college project that controls a 240v light. The circuit and light will be controlled by a switch however when the switch is first turned on the light needs to remain off (no power supplied) regardless of the amount of time the switch is on. If however the switch was turned on off and on again then the light needs to come on. Any ideas of a circuit and components required to produce something like this? Your help is greatly appreciated.

A neat, rather disturbing bit of rat-based faux-designer wear:TransRatFashionA project by Kristofer Paetau, Rio de Janeiro, 20075 pieces of fake Chanel fashion accessories made out of taxidermised rats:a rat-bra, a rat-slip, a rat-handbag, a rat-handkerchief and a pair of high heel rat-shoes.Note that the webpage is decidedly NOT work-safe, or suitable for those underage. This picture tells the story pretty well on its own.

Design for reuse...

The "1st world" (that would be us) is infamous for its rampant and wasteful consumerism. Buy an electronic gadget with N times the power of the OLPC machine, then throw it away after two years (incidentally filling landfills with all sorts of questionable stuff.) Meanwhile, other parts of the world starve for technology.Do you think it would be possible to SLIGHTLY modify the design of 1st world consumer products to make it easier to reuse them (or parts of them) in devices conceptually similar to OLPC? I mean, consider the cell phone. Modern cell phones have cameras, flash card sockets, relatively high-res (but tiny) displays, relatively high-quality sound capability, low power consumption in standby mode, and radio based networking capabilities. It seems pretty close to an OLPC device to me (tell me an Apple iPhone wouldn't be an adequate replacement for an OLPC...)Why can't "we" convince a cell phone manufacturer to design the internals such that when the phones original life is over, it's guts can get a larger display and keyboard and new software, and become someone's computer or eReader. People are willing to donate their old phones to assorted worthy causes now; they might even be convinced to pay an extra $10 to purchase a phone that is MORE reusable. (or is it more expensive to do this sort of "refurbishment" than to build brand new machines?) Now that wireless headsets are common, it's not even necessary for a cellphone to retain a "phone-like" size and shape. Can I have a paperback sized combination cell phone and eBook reader that will have a second life as "just an eBook reader"?What would it take to make a cellphone reusable as the core of a general purpose computer?1) extend and standardize display interface to allow page-sized display.2) extend and standardize keypad interface to allow keyboard (?)3) internal software nearly completely replacible with a general purpose OS.4) inappropriate radio functions capable of being removed, disabled, or converted to more appropriate functions (ad-hoc wireless networking)Some of those seem like things manufacturers would be doing anyway, just to reduce their own costs. Creating a reusable cellphone core may be more a matter of documentation than anything else (and politics. Not that either is easy.)Next, what other electronic devices do you have that you're likely to be done with before they break? An MP3 player could use the same standardized display link and reprogramability as cell phones. Your LCD monitor could implement the other half (old cell phone plus old monitor = general purpose computer?) I don't think there's enough standardization in the desktop computers to reuse them; their complexity makes reuse too administratively complex, and they're probably too power-hungry anyway. The "maker" community already spends a fair amount of effort reusing "appliances" as general purpose compute engines; usually "improving" the product in its original application space, or getting cheap cycles from a product that failed and is being sold off cheap. Creating intentionally reusable electronics would feed that community some, but it isn't big enough to absorb ALL the discards of our quick-moving society. A lot could be funneled into putting technology where it couldn't afford to be before.(some quick Google use says:In the US, we throw away over 400,000 cell phones PER DAY linkIn Europe, 27% of mobile phone user buy a new phone every year link; only 5% of the old phones are recycled.Overall, less than 1% of cell phones are recycled. link; cell phone sales are expected to exceed 1 billion per year by 2009.)(I pick primarilly on cell phones because they seem SO CLOSE to being a general purpose computer, AND small enough to possibly incorporate into a larger "second life" product.)

Designers Wanted: Join a Think-and-Make-Tank for Soul of Africa

Oxford University's Said Business School is running a sort of Peace Corps for designers. Writes Lucy Kimbell, Clark Fellow in Design Leadership: We need up to 10 designers who want to use their design practices and skills to help social enterprise Soul of Africa tackle some of the challenge facing it, during a one-day workshop in Oxford in collaboration with MBA students. The workshop is a participative, creative "think-and-make-tank" that brings together people from management and from design to use visual methods to analyze and tackle specific problems identified by an organization. MBA students from Said Business School will be joined by designers from different disciplines to help social enterprise Soul of Africa engage with key challenges. Soul Of Africa is a charitable initiative and a self-sustainable project created to facilitate employment and funding aimed at helping orphans affected by AIDS through the sale of hand-stitched shoes. Unemployed and unskilled women in South Africa are trained to hand-stitch shoes, giving them the self-empowering ability to feed their families and provide them with essential health care. Download more details here. What we are looking for Designers (recent graduates, current MA or BA design students, and design professionals) are invited to take part. Ideally, we'd like a mixture of people from these backgrounds: - visual communication - product/industrial design - service design - interface design - fashion - design management How to get involved To apply, send an email to Lucy Kimbell at lucy.kimbell@sbs.ox.ac.uk to arrive on or by Friday 20 March 2009. The email must include - your name and contact details and any institutional affiliation - your design discipline (eg product, visual communication) - up to 150 words on why you want to participate. Successful participants will be contacted by Friday 3 April at the latest. Reasonable travel expenses to Oxford (standard class return, UK travel only) will be reimbursed to those who attend the workshop, on the production of a receipt. The Design Leadership blog is here.Via Core77

Help with circuit design! Univeristy design project

I'm a University design student creating a new safety goggle that causes the tool you are using to cut out unless you are wearing your safety goggles and I need help designing a circuit that could demonstrate the way in which it could work as I have very little experience with circuits myself. For the product I am envisaging: 1- the tool is be plugged into a box, which in turn plugs into a wall socket. 2- the box connects to your safety goggles via Bluetooth 3- when wearing the safety goggles, pressure sensors behind your ears help identify that the goggles are being worn rather than being left on the side or on the ground 4- the goggles communicate that the pressure sensors are activated to the box you plugged your tool into and it allows the tool to work 5- if you take the goggles off, then the goggles tell the box that the pressure sensors are no longer activated and the box breaks the circuit to prevent the tool plugged into it from working.Any ideas on how I could build a circuit to demonstrate this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Introducing: Design Challenges!

Design Challenges will be in addition to our other contests. Here is what makes them different than our traditional contests and challenges: You do not create step-by-step Instructables for these contests. Create 3D designs using Fusion360, Tinkercad, or any program that allows you to make .STL files. Design Challenges can only be entered from the contest page. We will usually provide start files to get you started (this will be dependent on the contest and its theme). Our first one is the BOSEbuild Design Challenge. If you have questions specific to the BOSEbuild Challenge, the Speaker Cube, or creating your own custom designs, you can post those questions here. If you have questions about Design Challenges and what they are going to be like, post them here! *If you want to upload more than 1 STL file, upload your main design file in the "Add Design File" section and upload any supporting renders of the design, additional .stl files, or other relevant images to the "Add Images" section.*

BOSEbuild Design Challenge

The BOSEbuild Design Challenge encourages creative expression through the creation of 3D printable designs for the BOSEbuild Speaker Cube. The Speaker Cube is a build-it-yourself Bluetooth speaker engineered for curious minds. It allows for hands-on exploration of how a magnet and coil work together to make a speaker work. The finished Speaker Cube is built from a clip and panel system. You can design your own custom clips and panels and silhouette covers to be 3D printed to create a whole new personality for your finished speaker. And the best part is, the speaker will still work and sound great! The Design Challenge will run from June 19 to July 31, 2017. The winning entries will win an Ultimaker 3D printer, BOSEbuild Speaker Cubes, or Bose Headphones. This forum topic is for the discussion of any questions you have about the Speaker Cube, creating your own custom designs and any other questions you have about the design challenge. We are excited to see what creations you come up with.

Publishing unbuilt designs

I've got a project that I've been designing in SketchUp (a camper platform for attaching a full size tent to a small pickup truck) that I will definitely post on Instructables when, and if, I build it. The thing is, I've never built something like this before and I would really like to have opinions on the design before I start cutting wood. What is general consensus on publishing unbuilt designs? It's not really a collaboration, although that might be a good model for what I'm doing, it's just an incomplete project that I would like to solicit comments on before construction.

Genetic Circuit Design

Hackaday recently posted an article about genetic programming which was pretty cool (although technically it used a stochastic hill climbing algorithm....but who's counting?)The really cool thing was posted by acedio in the comments: genetic circuit designWhat these researchers have done is implemented genetic circuit design on an FPGA to create a circuit to light a light when someone says "go" into a microphone and turn it off when someone says "stop". Which is not really groundbreaking...but the way the genetic algorithm created the circuit is pretty amazing, it used what normal designers would consider unwanted characteristics of the circuit such as stray capacitance and inductance between components to "create" unavailable components out of logic gates, and because of this the researchers have no idea how it works!Computers can now design circuits in ways that would be damned near impossible for humans to do, how cool is that??!Deep thought here we come!
