Question about Drama Project

Hello. I live in Japan, where I'm a freelance translator. I help out at an English school two hours a week. The school has an English Drama Festival every December, in which the students perform English dramas. One of my two classes this year is with two girls in the 8th grade, who are advanced students for their age. Because the class is smaller than normal, we will be doing two comedy duo routines, one from the English-speaking world, and one from Japan translated into English. The native English routine will mostly be a composite of old Burns and Allen routines, with other stuff added. The Japanese routine involves the use of an "oven toaster" prop. A woman playing a grade school girl puts in a slice of bread to toast, and the toaster door opens automatically and ejects the toast across the room. The third time it blows up with smoke and a flash. To see the routine, please look at the YouTube video embedded at the end. The part in question starts at around the 4:20 mark and lasts for about a minute. There are no wires that I can see. I would like to reproduce this scene if possible. The toaster falling apart at the end isn't necessary - just the door, the ejection, and the smoke. I can use wires from the toaster to plug into an outlet offstage. I also have a small budget, and I have very basic skills, so I could probably hook up the wires and a switch. What I hope someone can help me with is how to create that device and effect. I appreciate any advice. Thanks for your time.

The music has brought to me a wonderful story? Give me your opinion

Ok, so while trying to get to sleep, about an hour ago, I decided to listen to "For Crying out Loud" by Meatloaf. I tried to daynightdream (Dreaming while awake at night) me singing the song.... the music has unleashed a story. I tried to keep the story going. I then listened to "Hallelujah" by Paramore, then "No Suprise" by Chris Daughtry. Here is the story: Plot: A man and his band have a dream of becomming big. The man is the singer. He meets a girl, who helps his band out, and is a guest singer with the man.The man feels this may be the perfect girl for him, until a terrible accident happens. Doctors struggle to keep the girl alive, but she ends up dying. The man, being so depressed, departs from his band until he finds life. He starts touring solo around his hometown. He dedicates a performance of a cover of the song "For Crying out Loud" by Meatloaf to the girl. At the end, he breaks down and curls in a ball in the back of the stage. Being so depressed, he doesn't realize that he falls asleep. He wakes up a few hours later. He finally leaves the empty theater, to go to the girls house. It is empty, except for her dog. He feeds the dog. He thens becomes curious, and reads the girls diary. The last entry of the day said "I am not sure why, but something doesn't feel right. If anything happens to me, let (the mans name) know, I love him". The man can't help but to be sad, with a touch of happiness. He places the diary back in her drawer, and goes back to the garage where his band practiced. He soon finds out that the band had found a new singer, and has ditched him... to already have a platinum record released. Will the man find hope to find his dream? Please tell me what you think. Tell me if you think I should try to see if maybe I can write it, then possibly get it published? I really want your opinion. Okay, so I just wrote my first chapter. Here it is: "Hey. Gimmie that drumstick over there. I lost my other one," "Well, you know that being destroyed will leave a void" "Shuddup with your logic, Brian. Wait... destroyed...void. Write that down for a song!" No one knew the drummers name. They just called him "Animal". The lead guitarist is Brian. The rythm guitarists name was Chad. But most importantly, the singers name was Damian. Damian Blue. Everyone knew his name. He was the popular one of the town. "Destroy... and... void.... Got it!" Brian said in a monotone voice. "Killer! Okay, lets practice our song Lost" So they did. They played. This is the bands most enjoyed song. Everyone loved it. The town, the citizens, the kids, and even the mayor showed up at a concert. These are the people, this is the life, this is the band "Pessimist or Optimist?"

How do I know whether or not by grade 8 crush likes me? Answered

I'm in grade 6 and I really like this guy but he's in grade 8 and I rarely ever see him. I only started seeing him more when he got in trouble so when I enter the school in the morning he's always there facing the door helping with the lunch "tickets" that I get everyday just to get his attention and even then it feels like he likes me but I'm not sure because he's always so emotionless around me and when I go to get lunch with my best friend, my crush only says hi to my best friend and looks at me I always feel he's eyes on me the only time we ever talked was when I first meet him I asked his name and he smiled and replied, the second was at lunch when I was laughing like crazy and he came up to us and started laughing too cause he over heard me saying something so weird and crazy to a friend of mine and everyone was like what, so yah I really don't know if he likes me or not?, I keep getting mixed messages and somethings it feels like he's ignoring me By the way I'm 5'3 and he's like 5'7 or 5'8 (I don't know why I added that in :>) and he's like the jock of the school, he's popular, cool, and calm and I'm well known around the school but I wouldn't say I was popular, I'm too confident for my own good and I'm not afraid to voice out my opinions and I think that me and my crush are a perfect match

Can a diesel run on 2stroke fuel/be supplemented with 2 stroke fuel mix? Answered

Hi all can a diesel run on 2stroke fuel mix if the 2stroke oil was added to the petrol in heavy enough quantities so that 1. It off set the octane rating of the petrol so that it acted like diesel? 2. It was blended with diesel to supplement the mix?  The reason I ask is that there is a lot of mistakes made at the fuel pump with people putting fuel in diesel and I was wondering if the petrol was know, that a measured amount of 2stroke oil was added that this would solve the problem, rather than the expensive issue of towing, draining and repairs? I have had this experience and drained most of the petrol and then added motor oil to the new diesel to help lubricate and no dramas. Positive comments please.

Building ideas for a onstage train? Answered

My high school is doing Hello Dolly and if possiblelwould like a train to be brought on stage, does anyone have ideas on how to do that? I have a couple but I'm having trouble bring all of it to one idea. I had an idea you can make hand turnable axles and gears for the wheels, other stuff for the smokestack, I was thinking maybe corflute for the body, but its really just chaos in my head right now. Any suggestions?  It needs to be fairly lightweight.  It would be nice to have workable wheels  And not a real smokestack obviously but the appearance of smoke and a whistle Maybe a back platform if at all possible that Dolly could jump on... Our stage is small. It has no special things about it and its roughly 20 by 30 feet. There are two backstage wings that are really just small hallways that let out into the audience, and those are about 20 feet long.  Our plays are all financed by the drama teacher herself so the less expensive the better as well.  If nothing comes up thats ok too. We have an alternative that can be used.

A Disturbing Store Room

We've just returned from staying with friends in Geneva, where we slept in their (large and airy) basement. Next to the bedroom was the room our friends used as a store room - their nuclear bunker! When their house was built, it was a legal requirement for all homes to have a nuclear bunker.  A stocked, functioning nuclear bunker. The door is steel, filled with concrete.  It doesn't have a lock - that huge yellow bolt and spanner hold the door shut against invaders.  The door on the wall is an escape hatch, in case the house collapses on the main door, and the machinery in the corner is the air filter. The shelves double as beds, and the toilet is a bucket with a lid. I found it fascinating, and, to be honest, disturbing.  It took me two days to "get around" to going through and taking these photos. I grew up during the tense days of US/Soviet nuclear proliferation, when Threads wasn't just a disturbing drama, it was almost a government information film.  I paid attention at school - I knew what nuclear weapons really did.  To most kids, they were a cool way of destroying a bunch of stuff (even more so today).  To me, they were (and are) flatly horrifying, and the stuff of genuine nightmares. I look forward to when things like reduced to the kind of novel feature that ranks alongside "original fireplace" or sash windows.

How to make an electric gate?

Hi, so an office building near my work changed from physical record keeping to electronic record keeping. so they got rid of those big sliding records cabinets that were so heavy that they had to be powered by electric motors. - which I grabbed from the dumpster. the motor has a cogged wheel thing that will suit a bicycle chain perfectly, anyway moved in to a house and would like to build a sliding electric gate utilising one of these motors and this remote control unit from ebay- http://tinyurl.com/6zmm99p any one got any ideas? for safety I need to have a safety stopper thing so it doesn't crush a child when it is closing. I have limited area where I park my car so i can't have hinged gates. they have to slide along parallel behind the front fence. yeah. my house is very close to the front frence (about 7 meters) so connecting 240 volts (I'm in OzStraYa) is not a drama. The gate will be a metal frame about 1.8 meters tall and about 3 meters wide. running on a track. ideas please. or links to other DIY electric gates. thanks

How do I attach an LCD Screen to an IP DVR Camera Module?

Hi, I have a neighbor who moved in across the hall and brought drama with her in the form of more than one angry drunk boyfriend.  Security and police have been called to their door on more than one occasion and they blame me.  Garbage has mysteriously been left at my door and when they did not know I was listening have made some really nasty comments about me.  For my own protection I would like to install a peephole camera.  Since none of the ones I can find in my price range have both a dedicated screen and an ip camera would like to make one. I have found 1) IP Camera with DVR module like the one in the picture: http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00STKFDDC/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid;=25HQ29KSVC2OB&coliid;=I5BW4KF2XAIZR 2)  a billion different lcd screen kits, some generic, some for arduino, some for raspberry pi. This would be my first arduino or raspberry pi project but I am willing to learn.  But I think it may be redundant to use an arduino or raspberry pi as all I need is output, but I could be wrong I have no clue. If anyone could point me in the right direction of  an existing project plan or describe how to do it I would really appreciate it.  I have spent a couple nights searching but it is possible I don`t know the correct terms to find what I am looking for. Totally grateful for any help. Thanks!!!

Our latest project

Read this description: So I haven't posted anything in a long while, and, as well as work, one of the this was down to me and a few friends getting together and forming a YouTube channel called "MTNunlimited". It started out when we did drama at school (a subject which we no longer take) we had a tonne of ideas that we never got to use, and so we can now showcase them on the YouTube channel. Recently, our local youth theatre announced it's closure this Easter, and so we've decided to offer some kind of alternative to anyone who wanted to join in with amateur film-making. Our goal is simply to have fun. If you click onto our channel here, you'll see that we still have a long way to go before we're near the same calibre as a lot of current Internet filmmakers. This is why we have turned to the instructables community for support. We have a few ideas, but we would love to hear other people's thoughts on what we could possibly base a new video on. We'd also greatly appreciate any tips or tricks of the trade that we have not yet been enlightened on. Don’t consider this ‘spam’, as that’s very much the opposite of why I made this forum topic. I posted this to hear guidance and advice from people who have a bit more experience than us. Here's a little montage I made of what we do, in the form of a cinematic trailer, enjoy! And once again, thanks for any support offered :) - Lowney

Computer Science Project: Automated Follow Spot

Hi all!  This is my first post on instructables. I've been using this website for years to facilitate many projects, however this is the first time I'll actually be posting any questions of my own on the forums! Exciting! I'll cut to the chase, for my computer science A - Level I am required to complete a programming project, complex enough to get me a good grade, but feasible enough to actually complete! I decided to take a more practical approach and have arrived at the decision to make a robot of some kind. As I'm heavily involved with the drama department in the school I wanted to create something that could also help them. I decided upon an automated device that can use some form of trilateration to determine the position of a person on stage and then position a light to light them up. For those who have more experience in the world of technical theatre, I'm talking about an Automated follow spot. For those who don't here is a link to a wiki page.    The premise being that a person normally has to control a follow spot, pointing it at the person (or people) on stage, to light them up. An issue we have is that sometimes we don't have enough stage hands to operate the follow spots, which means they're left by the wayside. My idea will negate the need to have a human operator and should simply follow the person around the stage. The main idea at the moment is to use a single long range bluetooth transmitter, attached to a wristband (which would be worn by the actor/actress) and have three long range receivers, which in conjunction can trilaterate the position of the actor/actress and position the light to illuminate them. I have a couple of  questions: 1. Firstly, is this feasible? This is a project that I really want to see through to fruition, especially as it will count towards my final A-level. For someone of my level of knowledge/experience - is this possible? 2. What would be the best method for transmitting the radio signal? Bluetooth sprung to mind instantly, but is this the best option? I know there might be potential pitfalls in that a theatre is full of metal items and interfering signals that could disrupt this, so are there any better alternatives? I know there are only two questions for now, but I've only just started the design of the project. I'm sure when I get seriously into it I'll have many many more, but I trust that the good people of instructables will be able to provide some help! Thanks again, Eliot C-Hill

Homework Excuses thet will be the Talk of the Teachers Lounge

When you forget your homework, it's nice to add some humor to the situation and make the teacher laugh (hopefully).  Here are some excuses I came up with: "It fell into the Twilight Zone!" "My Chicken was in my room while I was doing it, and his diaper fell off.  I figured you didn't want it in the classroom, so I saved everyone the drama and chucked it in the chicken coup for them to enjoy.  Your welcome, by the way." "Well, just as I was finishing, I heard a 'er-er-reh-ah', and my paper turned into o paper figure.  Then there was a 'er-er-er-ee', and it transformed into a paper airplane and flew out the window!  The last thing I saw was a Decepticon insignia on the back.  I'd watch out.  It's a new era of Decepticons!" "My cat ate it, horked it up, and told me to clean it up.  I've got it in a plastic baggy, if you still want it." "Four penguins came into my room, took it, and told me they needed it for a top secret mission.  The leader told me 'You didn't see anything!'.  I assure you, it's being put to good use." "I was doing this outside, when this little green block-thing came up, looked at me, screamed, then blew up.  It's all ash now, so it's useless, so, I drew a picture of a creeper instead!" "Homework doesn't exist in my dimension." "Megatron stole it!  I'm telling you, I wasn't going to NOT give it to him!  He had a blaster in my face and everything!  I spent the rest of the night trying to figure out what happened, so I absolutely had NO time left for re-doing it." "I lost it in a mine.  If you want to find it, the world name is 'Procrastination'." "The neighborhood dog chased me, took the homework in his jaws, and told me 'This ain't over!'  I cannot tell you why he said that, because that is my bussiness." "I ate it.  It was bland until I added barbeque sauce." "Harry Potter turned it into a toad!  I yelled at him to turn it back, but he turned it into $1 million, and I am NOT giving it to you now!" "The TV hypnotized me into thinking it was a rabid squirrel, so I ended up smacking it into oblivion." "Function error; please define 'homework', or reboot." Please check out TheOneAndOnlyMissingNo.'s instructable on fake Windows XP error messages: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Windows-XP-Error-Message/ Its a lot of fun to make, and printing them and giving them to your teacher would be funny as well. NOTE: Realizing now that it might insult the teacher (Thanks, Kiteman), if you DO use one of these, just come clean at the end, smile, and Say "Yes, I forgot to do it.  It won't happen again."

Is working with your hands better than just with your head?

I saw this on the BBC, and was so impressed I've reproduced the whole thing here: By Tom de Castella Journalist If the new year and inevitable return to work leaves you yearning for change, is working with your hands the answer? The time for reflection is nigh - a new year, a new you. But is that workstation you've slotted back into looking depressingly familiar? As millions of workers drag themselves back into the office to contemplate another 12 months of drudgery, many will be wondering if they are in the right job. Writer and mechanic Matthew Crawford thinks a lot of us would be better off trading in our mouse for a screwdriver. His recent book, The Case for Working With Your Hands, has been a huge hit in his native United States, praised by critics and politicians alike. Mr Crawford, who used to run a Washington think tank but now mends motorbikes, says it is no wonder people are miserable at work. Jobs have become so specialised and process driven that it is hard to see what difference you are making. And in those rare cases where one's impact is obvious, the result may seem pointless. Jealousy "A lot of us are plagued with a sense of uselessness," he says. "I've created a brand - what good is that? So I've persuaded people to buy something they didn't need." When running a think tank, he says he honestly could not see the rationale for being paid at all, and wondered what tangible goods or services he was providing to anyone. Then he opened a motorbike repair shop and was surprised to find he was not just happier, but more intellectually stimulated. The life of a tradesman is a varied existence, mixing practicality with logic and problem solving, he says. "Imagine you're an electrician, you're installing a conduit pipe and have to bend around the corners to make everything line up. It's the kind of work that requires improvisation and adaptation. It can never be reduced to following set procedures." Not only that, the earning potential for a tradesman is greater than in many office jobs. For instance, a skilled mechanic is likely to earn more than a sociology graduate working in publishing, he argues. Not everything about manual work is rosy. He warns that furniture making is not a good career move - Ikea can undercut you by employing workers in China for a fraction of the price. But a range of trades that need to be done on site cannot be outsourced to low wage economies. After new year introspection, January and February are traditionally one of the busiest periods for moving jobs. Mr Crawford believes doing a trade can make you happier. 'Middle-class paradox' "It offers small moments of confirmation, like when the bike you're mending starts up and runs. Small satisfactions like that can be elusive at a huge organisation with vast layers of management, where the criteria by which you're measured are ambiguous." The Times columnist Giles Coren recently tried working with his hands for the BBC Two show Giles and Sue Live the Good Life. Despite his on-screen schtick of appearing to hate everything the duo are asked to do, he fell in love with it. "I found chasing the chickens and weeding the allotment immensely satisfying," he says. "The pain... was making the television show." He agrees with Mr Crawford that modern life has been blighted by a series of alienating processes, often carried out on mobile phone, laptop and e-mail. In this way, his chosen career - journalism - has been stripped of its sense of adventure and human contact. "Even 15 years ago when I started as a reporter, you left the office to do a story. You went to investigate, visited people and used the cuttings library. Now I just sit... and Google. It's terrible, I wish I was a fireman." Despite his columnist's salary, he is jealous of those whose jobs have a clear purpose like the gardener and cleaner. "My gardener Brian comes in to do the garden every two weeks. He takes his shirt off in the summer and smokes a rollie. I can see him through the window, but I'm sitting indoors, staring at the screen to pay for this guy - it's the classic middle-class paradox." Rory Sutherland, vice-chairman of advertising firm Ogilvy UK, agrees that working with your hands does offer greater satisfaction in the short term. But manual workers lack something many of us crave - influence. Jobs like advertising where you "work with your head" may seem futile, but the ideas they come up with really do change the world, he says. "Five years ago someone worked out that you could have one size lid for the three different sizes of coffee cup that cafes have. Ok, it's emphatically not the cure for cancer, but it's through millions of little ideas like this that we get richer as a society." Perception of value Television dramas like Mad Men depict the office to be a place of invigorating competition, sexual tension and creativity. However stylised the portrayal, Mr Sutherland says there is a definite buzz to working around like-minded people - one that tradesmen miss out on. "People partly enjoy work because it's social, but working with your hands can be lonely." And he believes that experienced trades people are often economically undervalued due to the perverse way that consumers ascribe worth. He cites the behavioural economist Dan Ariely's story about a locksmith. As a young apprentice, the tradesman used to take half an hour to mend a lock, at which point he'd be thanked wholeheartedly and given a tip. When he became more experienced, the locksmith could fix a similar problem in a minute. He charged the same rate and completed the job much faster. But instead of being pleased at his speed, customers complained about his rates and refused to tip him. "It's about our perception of value." And in this respect the skilled tradesman will often struggle, he says. In the course of researching his book The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, Alain de Botton concludes that we all want to make a difference in our job, however banal that change may be. "At the end of the working day we want to feel we've left the planet slightly healthier, tidier, saner than it was at the beginning," he says. "I'm not necessarily talking of huge changes - the difference might merely involve sanding a stair banister, removing the squeak on a door or reuniting someone with their lost luggage." And yet, it is a mistake to romanticise working with your hands, he warns. "At heart, what you're talking about is the charm of craft work. And it's my sense this can happen in places far removed from the workshop. If you're writing computer code you are in a sense displaying many of the same skills as a craftsperson, even if the finished product can't be held or touched." But following the financial crisis, Mr de Botton says attitudes to all types of work may be changing. He detects a move away from the middle-class idea that work lies "at the heart of our self-fulfillment", to the working-class view of employment as a means of feeding yourself and your family. So maybe job satisfaction is slipping down the list of what is important when it comes to work.
