I got my permit a couple of days ago. Driving just feels right. Any of you new drivers? Got any white knucked parents screaming WE'RE GONNA DIE! digging their fingernails into the dashboard yet? Do any of the rest of you have good stories of back-in-the-day driving or now? Funniest thing a cop has said?

I recently got into taking apart old computers that no longer work (and by no longer work I mean really screwed up and not worth keeping) and see what I can salvage. I found this 80 gigabyte hard drive from a Windows Desktop computer, and i was wondering how i could wipe it without having to put it back in the computer, because it's all in pieces at the moment. If they uploaded correctly, i have pictures of the hard drive and all of it's info. Also, could some tell me the official name of it please? Thanks. :D

These flash drives by Shu-Chun Hsiao are serious. The drives are encased in concrete and are embossed with the weight of each one, a number that correlates with the flash drive's capacity. I love the idea, but 256g sticking out the front of my desktop is just going to destroy itself. P.S. This would make a great entry for the upcoming USB Contest Concrete Memory, Get Totally Cemented via TechEBlog

I have laptop with a dying seagate drive, and before it dies completely, I got a hitachi drive as a replacement. My question is, how can I copy the disk exactly onto the new drive, keeping all files and programs intact so I don't have to re-install windows. I'm guessing I can't just copy and pasts, but maybe using xcopy? I have plenty of other computers and cables to use for transferring if needed.

I am a long time follower, and, if I am not mistaken, first time poster. Please bear with me... I have looked about the site quite a bit, but I have found no solution to my question. Heck, I don't know if it is even possible! I have a few hard drives from older computers that have went the way of many older electronics do... :( ...and I want to do something with them, besides leaving them about to collect dust. Is it at all possible to connect them to a usb port WITHOUT a hard drive enclosure? I was kinda thinking about connecting a usb cable to the ide port, but will it work, and to which pins do I apply wires/solder? If this is possible and someone knows how to do it, please, PLEASE get back to me! Thanks so much!

I need to get a harddrive motor up and running, it has four pins for power, does anyone know exactly what these pins or which is which, the motor is from a harddrive from an old xbox, i worked hard get this wretch out all the way down to the motor, honestly microsoft should build bomb shelters, and the casing of the hard drive is pretty tough, on of the boards on it needed some friendly persuasion from a hacksaw and a hammer after I removed the apparent retaining screws, all 7 million of them, by the way I may do an instructable on how to open an old Xbox with nothing more than a swiss army knife, and it doesn't get damaged at all. To figure out the pins is all I need, left to right arrangement would do I have figured out which way up the bottom is but the crazy hieroglyphis in microscopic size reveal little about the connections,

Hi there. I know most of you reading this are thinking of the simple process that is reformatting a hard drive, and are prepared to offer me an obvious and somewhat novice explanation as "right click > format...". Please don't, this is not the case. I recently acquired an external hard drive previously used as a Direct TV Dvr. The hardware and everything is fine, and my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the disk itself is in a format my Windows-based computer cannot recognize, read, or understand, and - as a result - does not acknowledge it exists. I need to figure out how to reformat this to NTFS / FAT32 to use on a windows machine. Also note, as a result of the lack of recognition of the disk, I can only guess its drive letter. CMD does not recognize it at all - I have tried mounting disks E - Z with no result. If needed, I have access to a Macintosh, but that is preferably the last resort as it resides about an hour away from where I am currently.

I was thinking somthing lik a toaster. :D But really... i want something kool. i mean even somthing totally useless... I just wanna fill them. I did consider using 1/2/3 of them for resivours for a liquid cooling system... but thats a little hard 4 me rit now. I am on a budget. I already gotta pay lik 130-230 for a new mobo. But i still hav som monsy 2 spend on it. So, wat is the coolest 5.25 inch drive bay device u ever saw. I also have 2 3.5 inch ones for smaller things. I've found many instructables, but they all require an expensive SATA to USB adapter. Are there any projects that don't require this item? It would also be acceptable to find one that would let me wire multiple drives to the same SATA port.

Hey I was looking for a broken ipod mini the other day so I could get a new case for mine, and I noticed that many of them still have working hard drives. That's when it hit me. I was thinking, why let all that space go to waste, when you pay $80 at the store for just a 2 gig flash drive. Would it be possible to make a flash drive from the hard drive in the ipod? At first I was just going to wire the drive to a USB port, but I'm thinking that may not work. Does anybody out there know more about how flash drives work? I think I have a good idea, now I'm counting on your imput!

Hi everyone, I have a friend who have helped me to attach some components on the chip of the flash drive to make it possible to select some LEDs to lid. So with this new components I'm going to make a software that changes 4 LEDs in the flash drive. This software that I'm going to develope is going to be on the flash-drive and not on the computer, and when I press a button "turn on green" or something similar the green light should led. Now to my question. What programming language should I use, and how do I make it possible to "talk" to the leds? Hope anyone can help me with this, Thanks in advance xddx

I have a Nikon D200 Digital SLR that uses a CompactFlash (Type I/II) MicroDrive and when I'm in the field I take lots of high resolution images that takes a long time to download through the USB port of a laptop. I would like to be able to just carry a self-contained portable hard drive (i.e. 2.5" hard drive in an enclosure) with it's own battery source and just be able to insert the MicroDrive to a card reader connected to the enclosure and download all the images of the MicroDrive without the use of a laptop. A commercial version already exist but they are very pricey like the Epson P-2000. Basically I want the same functionality of the Epson P-2000 but I want the option to use whatever size drive I choose. How much battery would I need to power a hard drive? Would I have to use some sort of circuitry to transfer the images from the MicroDrive to the hard drive with a push of a button? Does anybody already have any instructions on how to build this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'VE BEEN WORKING IN AN OFFICE FOR OVER 25 YEARS, AND WE ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. LITTLE NOOGIES OF PAPER WITH PASSWORDS TO DIFFERENT WEBSITES, SCRATCHED OUT AND CHANGED, ILLEGIBLE, ETC. IS THERE A WAY TO PROGRAM A USB DRIVE TO HOLD ALL YOUR PASSWORDS SO THAT YOU DON'T NEED THE PIECES OF PAPER? SOMEBODY COULD MAKE A TON OF MONEY JUST WHERE I WORK WITH ONE OF THESE!

I am looking for ideas or a complete solution to locking up your car keys when getting drunk, but allowing access to the keys the next day to go to work or whatever. The idea is to make an electronic bank of sorts that you would deposit your car keys into and it would be time delayed, so you could not open it till the following day. Another idea is to make a breathalizer that you could make and install in your vehicle, and not have it monitored or have to make monthly payments on it as they are set up now. I know my son has good intentions of not drinking and driving, but we all know when drunk, your intentions are impaired. if people that wanted to drink, yet not drive, a setup like this could save people from driving when impaired even though they normally wouldn't. If someone has an idea on this issue, I would love to hear about it and could help in the construction of this type of device, be it supplying components, to financing the project. Message me here and I can give you my ph number, etc to make getting together easier. Dan

I am in the (long term) process of rebuilding my tricycle recumbent bike (a tadpole configuration). At present it has the usual long chain driving the rear wheel. I would like to do away with the long chain for several reasons and am toying with the idea of using a hydraulic drive. Cylinders at front and rear with the front driven by my feet and the rear driving a standard pedal set with the normal short chain/gear set - in face the rear frame of a standard bike with the hydraulics rams in place of my legs.. I can't find anywhere that this has been done and this worries me as generally what can be done is done. In metal weight would be a problem but I hope to be able to machine the rams in plastic tubing giving me a light energy transfer from front to back. Hopefully it will be electric assist as well but that is another matter. Any comments would be welcome before I commit to building it so I can see why this is such a bad idea.

I'd like to know, is there any way to copy EVERYTHING from my computer hardrive (this one) and put it on another harddrive, BUT still in this "tower"? As in, I just like swap out the drives. This comp's HD is 70gig, but my other ones 220 gigs. I want to keep all my programs and such, but I want to put it on a bigger HD. Any suggestions? and please please please! let it be freeware. I just love it. Also, I am using XP, and so is the other computer with the bigger HD, but for some reason, the other computer has bigger icons and not as good a quality.

Does anyone know how to make the circuit like the ones inside srevo motors? I am designing a sumo bot with radio control. I need to use contenuously rotating motors with lots of power to drive the robot. I do know how to modify my servos so they contenuously rotate, but I don't think they will have enough power to push around the other robots. I would like to use one of my 12v gearmotors instead of the ones contained in servos, but I don't want to destroy my servos to do it.

I recently finished reading the hitchhiker's guide series. Douglas Adams is a genious! he and authors such as George Orwell, are commonly looked over by todays readers. anyways, on to my question. does anyone know the components required to construct an ifinite improbability drive, like the one from the books? (and for the ignoramous who decides to tell me that its fictional and to shut up, i rebut before you post with, i know, if you had any sense to know that before your reading this, you wouldn't post said comment.) but yeah, does anyone know? i am looking for great minds such as kiteman or gmjhowe, or maybe a less well-known person. whoever you are, thanks in advance.

Hello there instructables, I have another question discussing maglev theory and i was directed that the true way to build this project was to use 3-phase power! So this question, although related, is also an entirely new project in its own right! Now to the point, i have been researching single to 3-phase conversion, and there are a few options available like rotary or static phase converters, but i have been intruiged by a device called a variable frequency drive! Okay so what i understand so far (i think) is that these convert ac to dc, run that dc through a H bridge rectifier using igbt's and then convert the 3 outputs back to ac...... okay assuming my analogy is correct so far, to my question, 1. How are the igbt's triggered in the h bridge? do they use a function generator with altering timesteps to create the seperate phases? 2. Also how are these kept in sequence with eachother? Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I have ran into a issue with a project that i cannot figure the best solution for. Here is what i am trying to do. Imagine a pvc pipe setup in a ladder configuration. On top of each side of the ladder system an aluminum angle rail runs up and down each side. On top of this rail system is another square pvc piece with ball bearing mounted externally allowing the pvc square to ride up and down the rail. My issue has come from automating the pvc square to move back and forth on the this rail system. I thought of using a dc motor driving it to each end where a switch would be contacted to reverse the motor in the opposite direction. The issue is getting a motor that has enough torque to move the pvc square with about 10lbs on top of it maybe less and to do this a fairly slow motion. I had thought of maybe using a cheap 540 rc car motor, but this is where my ? comes in. How do i drive the square with the motor with out getting overally complicated. Would i be able to adjust the speed of the motor with a potentiometer? If so would i be able to keep the torque or would that reduce too? Finally is there another option that would be simplier to exectue?
