Driving Stories

I got my permit a couple of days ago. Driving just feels right. Any of you new drivers? Got any white knucked parents screaming WE'RE GONNA DIE! digging their fingernails into the dashboard yet? Do any of the rest of you have good stories of back-in-the-day driving or now? Funniest thing a cop has said?

Driving speakers?

How do I drive speakers? Like, if I just soldered a cable and a jack onto a speaker, would it work? Or do I need some kind of circuit to go along with it?  Many thanks, Zem.

According to physics, does driving with a heavy load increase traction in winter?

Many Canadians enjoy adding weight to their vehicles over the winter to increase traction. How does it work? Since friction is force normal times mu, thus having a greater force normal means more friction. However since mu is usually so small, the increase in friction is negligible as compared to momentum. The momentum from added weight, mass times velocity would be dramatically increases, meaning longer distances to stop and easier fish tails around corners. Therefore less weight is more benficial. This is my logic, and I may be wrong. I don't know, thats why I'm asking...

Hyper-mile!

I'm afraid you're going to hear more than a few bits of money-saving advice from me! I'm a self-proclaimed Queen of Tightwaddery! We've been honing our skills at our house since I quit my job 3 years ago. I was determined to be a stay-at-home mom, and discovered that by being careful, I could save as much as I was bringing home, and be happier doing it! Hypermiling is one way we save money. The term "hypermiling" is new to us - we read about it in Reader's Digest a few months back. Some hypermilers go crazy and take risks. In our house, we've chosen a few things we can do to improve gas mileage without risking our lives or ticking off other drivers. Here are a few that anyone can do:1. Watch your speed. Driving 75 on the freeway might be legal, but it uses a lot more gas. Keeping it to 65 (or better yet, 60) can save 2-3 miles per gallon or more.2. Avoid accelerations and braking. While this might sound like using cruise control, it goes beyond that. You want to make your speed changes gradually, a) allowing your vehicle to stay in the highest gear possible when accelerating (lower rpms), and b) taking advantage of momentum (coast, don't brake, whenever possible). So if you see a stop sign ahead, stop accelerating sooner and coast. Perfection would mean coasting to a stop without needing the brake (but consideration for drivers behind you usually prohibits this!). See how close you can come! When accelerating, do it gradually, allowing your vehicle to shift earlier (let up on the gas a little to encourage the shift). If you see a slow-down or big curve ahead, ease up and leave room so you don't have to hit the brakes.3. Get the lead out - of your vehicle, that is. I improved the gas mileage on my van about 1-2 mpg by taking out the back two (unused) seats! Don't use your vehicle as a storage unit!4. Check your tires. Under-inflated tires will cost you a mile or two per gallon. There are lots more ways to improve your mileage and save money. Google "hypermile" or "ecomodder" and learn specific things you can do with your make and model of vehicle.Do the math - you might be surprised how much you can save. Here's an example, using a 20 gallon gas tank and 20 MPG:You can drive around looking to save 10 cents a gallon on gas. Assuming you find cheaper gas without burning a lot of it while looking, you'll save $2.00 on a fill up. OR you can apply a few of the principles listed above. I improved my van's gas mileage doing only those things by about 5 mpg. 5mpg x 20 gallons is 100 extra miles I can go on a tank of gas. At 20 mpg, that's a 5 gallon savings - at $3/gallon, that's $15 per fill. (That's like finding gas 75 cents per gallon cheaper!) How many times do you fill in a year? You do your own math and see the savings! My husband drives a lot and is squeezing 41-44 mpg from his car rated for about 33 mpg. With all his driving, he figures he's saved about $175 per month over the last 3 months. All this hypermiling has made us very aware of how much driving a mile costs. Now we look at every trip out in dollars and cents. If you had to pay $2 to run to the store and back, would you still do it? (If you're going for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs, tack the $2 in gas onto that item - is it worth it?) We've started combining trips, planning ahead to avoid extra trips out, carpooling, using the car instead of the van when we can, etc, etc, etc.Awareness is the first step. Try it and see!

Drunk Driving Bank

I am looking for ideas or a complete solution to locking up your car keys when getting drunk, but allowing access to the keys the next day to go to work or whatever. The idea is to make an electronic bank of sorts that you would deposit your car keys into and it would be time delayed, so you could not open it till the following day. Another idea is to make a breathalizer that you could make and install in your vehicle, and not have it monitored or have to make monthly payments on it as they are set up now. I know my son has good intentions of not drinking and driving, but we all know when drunk, your intentions are impaired. if people that wanted to drink, yet not drive, a setup like this could save people from driving when impaired even though they normally wouldn't. If someone has an idea on this issue, I would love to hear about it and could help in the construction of this type of device, be it supplying components, to financing the project. Message me here and I can give you my ph number, etc to make getting together easier. Dan

CAR WAVE-CONGESTION AVOIDED BY WATCHING YOUR "SIX"

Historians traditionally tell us that to ignore history is to repeat its pitfalls. So how can history help us improve the flow of car traffic? Did you know that many aspects of the world’s legal systems come from biblical origins using tried and true fundamental laws originating from the Ten Commandments? The concept of “watching your six” borrows from these universally accepted laws, whose credo stipulates guidelines for human interaction as well as interaction with god. Your "six" refers to the driver behind you whom you should treat as you would yourself. With this in mind, we have a new credo for today’s need to interact with each other by driving your car responsibly through high density traffic to avoid “wave congestion". This term is used to describe isolated packs of cars suddenly causing a local slow-down in traffic flow, while both upstream and downstream traffic continues to still move well, and so our rule states:   “Drivers are responsible for the immediate driver behind them, keeping him safe and avoiding unnecessary braking”    How This Rule Works In traffic: 1)            The Rule is Expansive, All Inclusive and Saves Us Money If we followed this general rule, we would become responsible for leaving the proper space/time ahead of the car in front of us. Space clearly gives us reasonable reaction time to perhaps "brake by simply coasting" and not force the driver behind us to suddenly brake hard. It will help us to recognize that the proper spacing between cars is not an open invitation to dart between lanes just to get ahead by one car length. This causes “wave congestion” and the possibility of accidents during heavy traffic situations. It assures that braking is something one does as a "last resort" and only when no other circumstance for safety and/or avoiding a collision is available. It holds the “rubber-necker” responsible for maintaining good traffic flow or get ticketed. The rule encourages a driver to adapt the techniques of defensive driving so as to avoid accidents, and to embrace the proper social skills of driver etiquette to mitigate road rage and its associated erratic driving behavior. Ultimately, the rule will financially help us to reduce our car insurance costs by promoting fewer negligence accidents. 2)            Eliminate Reactive Braking … Trust the Driver In Front of You Keep in mind what normally happens in heavy traffic when the first driver uses their brakes either in idle thoughtlessness or in protective response to traffic congestion ahead. Under these circumstances, we reactively use our brakes for two reasons:  a)   Reduced Reaction Time  - The first car’s brake lights go on, giving us less time to react so we over compensate by braking harder than him. This affect gets compounded, causing each subsequent upstream driver to brake still harder, until the reactive braking time becomes impossible to respond to and a collision or multiple collisions occur.  b)   We Don’t Trust Other Drivers  -  We are conditioned not to trust our fellow drivers because they haven’t yet been educated to abide by our Rule. This lack of trust causes us to drive "overly" cautious and results in the over use of our brakes to defend ourselves. Our driving habits have created a psychological situation just waiting for an accident. 3)            Implies Driving Etiquette that Must Become Required Driver’s Education The rule and its derivatives must be taught as part of our driver’s education program, and their concepts definitely reviewed during the licensing exam. The Rule also includes adherence to a driver’s code of etiquette which goes beyond just obeying our basic traffic laws of vehicle safety as is currently done. Highways are becoming too congested to allow rouge drivers to ignore their “social” driving responsibilities and the etiquette of the road.  Traffic tickets for abusing social driving etiquette should be as prolific and costly as our traffic laws for speeding and/or not stopping at a stop sign, etc. 4)            Compliments Our Near Term Use of Self-Controlled Vehicles Our Rule intrinsically implies the responsibility for social driving etiquette and takes us forward with steps that avoid future traffic congestion.  Improvements will come from technological automation which will eventually take the erratic human factor out of our equation to produce the smooth flow of traffic even during congested periods. Something as simple as today’s cruise control helps us to avoid “wave congestion” by maintaining a constant highway speed plus reducing inadvertent “brake riding” which sends the wrong message to the driver behind us.  Our ultimate step towards smooth traffic flow involves using near-term technology that completely eliminates drivers and relies on self-controlled vehicles taking over within regions of high density traffic. Ideally this will eliminate traffic accidents due to the unpredictability of driver shortcomings, making technological glitches our only possible area of concern in the near future. Google, in cooperation with the state of California, is currently in the process of introducing such vehicles onto the state’s roadways.

Portable Storage Drive

I have a Nikon D200 Digital SLR that uses a CompactFlash (Type I/II) MicroDrive and when I'm in the field I take lots of high resolution images that takes a long time to download through the USB port of a laptop. I would like to be able to just carry a self-contained portable hard drive (i.e. 2.5" hard drive in an enclosure) with it's own battery source and just be able to insert the MicroDrive to a card reader connected to the enclosure and download all the images of the MicroDrive without the use of a laptop. A commercial version already exist but they are very pricey like the Epson P-2000. Basically I want the same functionality of the Epson P-2000 but I want the option to use whatever size drive I choose. How much battery would I need to power a hard drive? Would I have to use some sort of circuitry to transfer the images from the MicroDrive to the hard drive with a push of a button? Does anybody already have any instructions on how to build this?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Reformatting a hard drive? Answered

Hi there. I know most of you reading this are thinking of the simple process that is reformatting a hard drive, and are prepared to offer me an obvious and somewhat novice explanation as "right click > format...". Please don't, this is not the case. I recently acquired an external hard drive previously used as a Direct TV Dvr. The hardware and everything is fine, and my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the disk itself is in a format my Windows-based computer cannot recognize, read, or understand, and - as a result - does not acknowledge it exists. I need to figure out how to reformat this to NTFS / FAT32 to use on a windows machine. Also note, as a result of the lack of recognition of the disk, I can only guess its drive letter. CMD does not recognize it at all - I have tried mounting disks E - Z with no result. If needed, I have access to a Macintosh, but that is preferably the last resort as it resides about an hour away from where I am currently.

Hydraulic drive for trike.? Answered

I am in the (long term) process of rebuilding my tricycle recumbent bike (a tadpole configuration). At present it has the usual long chain driving the rear wheel. I would like to do away with the long chain for several reasons and am toying with the idea of using a hydraulic drive. Cylinders at front and rear with the front driven by my feet and the rear driving a standard pedal set with the normal short chain/gear set - in face the rear frame of a standard bike with the hydraulics rams in place of my legs.. I can't find anywhere that this has been done and this worries me as generally what can be done is done. In metal weight would be a problem but I hope to be able to machine the rams in plastic tubing giving me a light energy transfer from front to back. Hopefully it will be electric assist as well but that is another matter. Any comments would be welcome before I commit to building it so I can see why this is such a bad idea.

Variable frequency drive

Hello there instructables, I have another question discussing maglev theory and i was directed that the true way to build this project was to use 3-phase power! So this question, although related, is also an entirely new project in its own right! Now to the point, i have been researching single to 3-phase conversion, and there are a few options available like rotary or static phase converters, but i have been intruiged by a device called a variable frequency drive! Okay so what i understand so far (i think) is that these convert ac to dc, run that dc through a H bridge rectifier using igbt's and then convert the 3 outputs back to ac...... okay assuming my analogy is correct so far, to my question, 1. How are the igbt's triggered in the h bridge? do they use a function generator with altering timesteps to create the seperate phases? 2. Also how are these kept in sequence with eachother? Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
