Can one use a single core of a dual-core processor to create a "virtual" graphics card? Answered

I have a laptop (Thinkpad R61) that has a dual-core processor but horrible integrated graphics. Is there some sort of software that can "split off" one of the cores and use it to simulate a dedicated graphics card? I'm running 32-bit Windows XP at the moment, which might make it difficult to fully utilize the dual-core setup. I'm open to any suggestions that involve Windows 7 or Linux - both are pretty easy for me to get / install.

Will this motherboard support a dual core CPU? Answered

I'm helping my friend do some upgrades on his computer, it's a Compaq Presario SR2034NX desktop. I'm wondering if it will support a dual core processor or not. According to HP, it doesn't, but looking around on the internet, I've seen quite a few people have upgraded to dual cores. However, there's some minor differences with this particular motherboard. It seems that there are actually two different types of motherboards with the same model number from Asus (A8M2N-LA). On the HP site they have different HP model numbers (a more advanced board - the NodusM3-GL8E, and the one I have - the Naos-GL6; both with the same A8M2N-LA number for Asus) It appears that the NodusM3-GL8E supports all sorts of fun things like 8 GiB of DDR2 800 RAM and dual cores up the wazoo. However, the Naos-GL6 looks like a stripped down version of the NodusM3-GL8E (two less RAM sockets, etc.), so it might not support a dual core. I'd like to know before purchasing, since Newegg won't accept processor returns for a refund. Also, 800 Mhz RAM would be nice to have, HP says it only supports 667 Mhz RAM but other people have put 800 Mhz in with no issues. Does anyone know if my friend's mobo will support a dual core and 800 Mhz RAM?

Replacing the CPU on a laptop to a Dual-Core? Answered

I recently downloaded Call of Duty: Black Ops, but there seem to be some problems. My CPU simply isn't powerful enough run it. Price is no option, all I need to know Is whether or not it is even possible to replace the CPU of a laptop. Any recommendations for a dual-core processor, and/or help installing it would be greatly appreciated. EDIT 1: Dayum, that's a lot of suggestions... but very helpful nonetheless. After careful consideration (and some extra cash) I believe an Alienware shopping spree is in order. Thanks everybody :)

Dual HDMI Processing

I have an idea for a project that needs to process 2 hdmi inputs in real time, and 1 hdmi output. What kind of processing power would I need for this? I don't think an arduino would be able to handle it, but would a raspberry pi? Or should I be looking at like a mobile dual-core or something? I'm trying to keep it in a small form factor and have it the least amount of lag possible. Thanks, -Nikon

Eight maybe? CPU Upgrade????? PLEASE REPLY!!!

Hi all. I am looking to upgrade my CPU cooler in my pc. Mycurrent cpu is a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz. My Motherboard is an Asus P5KPL-AM-EPU. I am trying to decide whether to buy a Pentium Dual-Core E6500, or a Core 2 Duo E7600. I USUALLY buy from CircuitCity because of their prices. Again, my choices are: Pentium Dual-Core E6500 Core 2 Duo E7600 I want something BETTER than the Pentium 4, but I dont want to spend much more than 200 dollars, preferably.. closer to 120 or so.. I know that those prices are CHEAP for a CPU, but well.. I dont have the money for a NEW pc, or a Core 2 Quad or expensive Core 2 Duo. If you're wondering why I dont have the money for a new pc or a more expensive CPU, Its because im 12. :D PLEASE REPLY ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!

Raspberry pi 2 processing capability?

Hearing the announcement of the new latest and greatest Raspberry Pi 2, now a backwards compatible computer with a 0.9GHz ARM Cortex-A7 quad core processor and 1GB of LPDDR2 SDRAM, I was wondering of the feasibility of using it as a very cheap and basic solution for a simple computer for my lab. Currently, I am using a compaq presario C700 Pentium Dual-Core laptop, that has been maxed out with 2GB 800MHz kingston RAM, and is running Kubuntu. I should also not the HDD has been replaced with a 120GB one from an old and broken Xbox. I do not like it much anymore, because although the performance of it is acceptable, the screen is a bit low res, at 1280x800, it's pretty dark (or at least until it 'warms up' to full brightness), it had a major scratch on the screen, (no idea how it got there) and after buffing it out with many methods, including with an eraser, the area has became discolored, like a portion of the screen has higher gamut and brightness, and lower black levels. :( Oh well. The main killer for it is that it's form factor. It is too big, heavy, the screen is too small, and it is very cumbersome to use far away in the corner of my workbench. Of course being a laptop, the 'base' of it is fixed to the screen, and to move it closer to me takes away lots of valuable space on my really messy bench. I mostly use it to research part numbers, get schematics off of google, watch YT videos, log data from serial ports (including my UNI-T multimeter with basic data-logging capabilities), and stuff like that. I may have as many as 20 tabs open at a time, which did tax my old compaq C700 when it had 1GB of RAM, but that was likely due to a memory leak issue with chrome, since I have the SAME issue with my main desktop, with 8GB of DDR3 RAM. If the video by MAKE is anything to judge, it looks just as powerful, as this embedded video is large! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZz8MW3DSqA My hope is to replace it with a raspberry pi, and be able to use it for these basic operations w/ a old cheap LCD monitor which can be picked up off of craigslist for cheap. Generally old 4:3 monitors go for next to nothing. Maybe I can even find one in the dump :P. Maybe I can configure the GPIO pins to be COM ports, w/ clock and everything else! That way an external FTDI chip and using the limited number of USBs is not an issue. Is that possible?

My computer is a SLIMLINE PC with 320GB hard drive and 3GB of system memory. Currently, my graphics card is an Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family. My CPU is a Pentium Dual-Core E5200 @ 2.50GHZ. If you need any more tech-specs, just comment and ask for it. PS: I'm guessing that I'll need a G-Force graphics card, if so, I need it to be at least Direct X 11 or newer.

Need a cheap dual-output, center tapped, 180VA 18V 5A transformer?

I am trying to design a nice dual-rail lab power supply and need a cheap dual-output, center tapped, 180VA 18V 5A transformer. The outputs are as follows: Primary: 120V Secondary 1:  9V-0-9V, @ 5A max. Secondary 2:  9V-0-9V, @ 5A max. ======================OR==================== Primary 120V Secondary 1:  9V, @ 5A max. Secondary 2:  9V, @ 5A max. Secondary 3:  9V, @ 5A max. Secondary 4:  9V, @ 5A max. I prefer a transformer for the linear regulator over a switching preregulator, because a switching preregulator sort of defeats the whole purpose of making a nice, high precision, low-noise lab instrument. However, I also prefer to have more than just 2 separate 18V outputs, since that means when the output is shorted and constant current mode kicks in for either the positive or negative rail, I will have a voltage drop of 18V, at a maximum current of 5A, and thats over 90W of power dissipation!!! I think that I can deal with that if thats the only solution, since I am planning on using a large CPU active heatsink for cooling, but I prefer if I was not pushing a TO-247 device to it's thermal limits. I have found this: http://www.antekinc.com/as-2218-200va-18v-transformer/ It is affordable, but it seems strangely cheaper than a lot of other toroidal Xformers on the market. Also, the 2 primaries are not center tapped. It is 200VA though! I have never heard of that company, and it seems like the description of it is written in chinglish. They act like the fact that they over-engineered and under-specced it is a feature (to me, thats how all ratings should be, that should be normal and standard, not a feature.). I have also found this: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/36-6/36-6-ND/1984766 It would be perfect, but it is $80!!! Very expensive, Also, I do not think it is a nice toroidal transformer, not that that matters much to be, I just like the professional look of a beefy toroidal transformer inside a power supply. Lastly, I have found this: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond-Manufacturing/1182G18/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvwUzoUXIIvySPCJQuQgm7bYNfLdl9rdUYluBT2%2f%252bFqzw%3d%3d It seems to be very similar to the first find, and it is from a reputable distributor. At $70 it is still expensive, and I do not want to spend over $100 for a homemade power supply. I would just get a off-the-shelf solution for that! What about the possibility of modifying a MOT transformer? How many VA or watts can I expect from the output without active cooling? I know they are rated from upwards to 1000W, but I also know they cannot sustain that power output for a long time without overheating and requiring lots of active cooling, and from what I remember, I believe the core is really being pushed into saturation during normal operation, leading to LOTS of power loss in the transformer core, but can they output 180VA continuously and effectively? Approximately how many turns of wire would I need to achieve my requirements, and what gauge wire should I use? I am thinking 20AWG but someone who has done that before would know better than me.

He had some other games in mind but I think that would be the most performance game out of all. Out of this it probably needs at least maybe 250GB but if less that is fine. That's all :)

How does the num. of turns & voltage on the primary translate to an ideal voltage on the secondary?

In electronics, one of the things that has been the most confusing to me is the physics behind transformers. I have learned of that stupid formula a while back, where the ratio of turns is proportional to the voltage ratio and inversely proportional to the current, however, I know from reality that it is no where near that straight forward. As far as I can tell, it is a bunch of BS. Anyway, I want to know what the REAL story is, how the AC current going through the transformer is related to the magnetic flux through the core, and how that relates to the output of the secondary. What seems counterintuitive to me is that more windings on the primary should yield to a stronger magnetic field in the core for a given current, which means for magnetic flux (???) which seems like it should yield to more induced current in the secondary. Is the answer related to inductive reactance (more turns = more inductance = more inductive reactance = higher impedance at a given sinusoidal freq. = less current per unit of voltage?) Note: If you have a good physics and calc background and understand it to heart, pls do explain. However, I am currently only nearing the end of calc 2 w/ absolutely no formal education in physics, so I may have some difficulty with wank terms and vocab. (a.k.a. do not try to show off how many terms you know attempting to explain things in the most complicated and technical way possible.) Also, any good tutorials online that go into depth into the topic? ----------------------------------- The reason I want to know these things is that I wasn't to build a good 6A 0-+/-15V dual isolated channel linear power supply with many transformer tabs so I can keep the voltage drop on the pass elements as low as possible at variable output's so huge $$$ heatsinks are not necessary due to lower low power dissipation. (I have mostly figured out the LPS circuitry, but have not found a suitable Xformer online.) I can get the laminated magnetic cores needed relatively cheaply, however if I have to do some custom windings, I want to make sure I do not choose the wrong number of windings for the core. (obviously one turn on the secondary and 5 turns on the primary will pop a breaker @ 60Hz... )

How much is my PC worth?

I don't think I would actually decide to change PCs, but if I were to sell it let's say on Craigslist, what would be a good price? It's an HP Pavilion Slimline. Dual Core 2.50GHz Intel Pentium E5200. 800MHz System Bus 2MB L2 Cache. Running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit with 3GB RAM and 286GB Hard Drive. An average HP keyboard and mouse both wired. No camera. CD R CD RW drive. 3 USB ports broken on back but 4 port Rocketfish USB Hub. A Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 GPU at 1GB. If that's not enough info just let me know. I hope it is at least maybe $350! Last question, is $699.99 a good price for a HPE h8-1360t? Its 3.4GHz and a 2GB NVidia GeForce GT630 with 8GB RAM and 1T hard drive, just to sum it up.

Would it be worth it to buy a new computer?

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline at 2.5GHz Dual-Core processor. It's using a Radeon 7750, a DVD RW CD RW optical drive, and a 286GB I think it is solid state hard drive. It's 2009 with an intel pentium processor and Windows 7 operating system. It has 3 USB 2.0 ports that are broken but with a 4 usb 2.0 port hub and 3GB of RAM. I would like to know if it would be worth it buying a new computer OR if it would be better buying an Intel i7 processor (3rd or 4th gen) and installing it manually. What are some problems I could face with installing one manually? I've seen processors that have Intel HD 4000 graphics in it already without a graphics card, would that interfere with my Radeon 7750? Could I fix that? Would it be worth buying a new gaming computer or would it be better buying an intel i7 processor at 3rd or 4th generation? If I were to buy a computer, I would buy one of the following: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-HP-Pavilion-HPE-H8-1360T-PC-i7-3770-3-4GHz-1TB-Windows-7-Desktop-/111163226377?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash;=item19e1d83909 http://www.ebay.com/itm/CyberpowerPC-AMD-FX-Series-8GB-DDR3-2TB-HDD-Capacity-Desktop-PC-Windows-8-64-Bit-/290968920890 http://www.ebay.com/itm/CyberpowerPC-AMD-FX-Series-8GB-DDR3-1TB-HDD-Capacity-Desktop-PC-Windows-8-64-Bit-/290971505030 Or something that is below $720 and is at least quad core i7 or at least hex core AMD. I would much prefer Intel i7 though. And I would need at least my Radeon 7750 or better. I only use Windows 7, not Windows 8 so if it comes with 8 I will install 7. If I buy an i7 processor and install it into my current computer, what processor would be compatible with my computer? LASTLY: I will pay no more than $350 for the i7 processor. Thanks for reading!

Re-using Smart TV board from dead TV to make another TV smarter...

Hi, I have just bought LG 47GA6400 TV but I damaged LCD screen (CRD31092201) when I was assembling it.  I couldn't find low cost LCD to replace and I started wondering how I can reuse any remaining parts of this TV. Actually there are many people like me wondering what to do with dead Smart TV. Few years ago you would receive a standard advice – throw it away. But today Smart TV parts are powerful and with your help might be re-used again... Here is an example: My LG TV has mainboard with dual core CPU,  Google TV inside and cool remote controller with QWERTY keyboard and tons of applications.... I wish I could reuse it with other, not so smart LCD TV I have.  The only problem, how to connect Smart TV mainboard to a HDMI.  It doesn't have HDMI out, it has only input ports and one LCD interface cable.... Is it a crazy idea to convert LCD interface back to HDMI or VGA ? Can you create an instructables to show how to do that ?

custom computer build problems with PCI expansion slots? help please!

My build is: ASrock z77 extreme4 mobo Intel core i5 3570K CPU GEIL 8GB (4x2) dual channel DDR3 ram old Samsung HDD (i plan to change this out soon) Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit (and 12.04 32 bit on dvd) old d-link WDA-1320 PCI WiFi card TV/FM winTV-HVR-1600 (also PCI) whenever i plug the WiFi card or TV tuner into the PC slot, the motherboard does not recognize it. (system browser inside the BIOS) this it getting annoying since i don't have WiFi and don't like using my old usb adapter  not to mention the TV (however i think the tuner is shot, not working, it only crashes Ubuntu when it is installed.) i don't know if this something misconfigured or something wrong with the mobo. i recently have been have problems with what i think is my HDD going bad, where Ubuntu crashes and need a fresh install i do have a 1 year extended warenty i bought from newegg to go along with the mobo. i don't have anything to plug into the other slots so i cant test them to see if they are working.

Dead laptop

My acer aspire 6920 laptop doesn't boot. I have tried the POWER RESET (as an option specified on the acer website), by removing the battery, unplugging, and holding the power button for 20-30 seconds. This had no effect. How it happened:I was playing a game called Warzone2100 on Ubuntu, and it FROZE, so i did a hard shutdown and then.....When I press the power button the following happens:>The Cinedash, and power button light come on . The Hard drive and Cd-rom, fan, and HDD start-up as well.>The hard drive light above the caps lock and num lock indicators flashes seven times consistently, with about a 3/4 of a second between each flash.>The system shuts off completely>(without anyone pressing the power button)The system turns back on and nothing happened.>The system requires a hard shut down.During this entire period NOTHING shows up on the screen, and the back light stays off.I think my BIOS is a PHOENIX and according to some research 7 BIOS beeps means its a bad processor. So I think my flashing light could be a Bios indicator. If my conclusion is true, do laptop processors cost ? and where would I be able to get one ?Are they easy to install ? are they interchangeable with desktop processors ?BTW My processor is an Intel Centrino T5750 Dual Core 2.0ghz.Thanks to anyone who helps me out !

MAC or PC?

My brother make videos and we have an iMac, lets just say it is not substantial for his needs.  Now just to get the point across we came up with a fair MAC-Pro, it has an SSD for faster boot and render, then a 1 tb drive for storage, a 4 core cpu, two radion hd whatevers, two monitors and no other special add-ons, price = 6,992.00 USD.  Now we came up with a massive decked out PC based substantially off of Dream Machine 2011.  It has an SSD, an intel i7 3.4 ghz (two more than the mac and 200 dollars less) a 3 tb massive kick ass hard drive which cost less than the one tb, 8 gb of ram for 50 dollars, the mac was well over 300.  The biggest newest graphics card NVIDIA has the 590 costing about 750 dollars.  Two 27" monitors a decked out sound system, a RAT 5 Mouse, a generic keyboard, v8 cpu cooler, fair case from cooler master, 1000w power supply, Blue Ray dual write disk drive thing, and the dream machine mobo.  It came in at 2950 dollars and every price for parts was rounded up to the nearest 5 dollars. Mac = about 7000 PC   = about 3000 Mac = less storage, less speed, less performance PC   = KICK ASS Mac = is it worth it just to do videos PC  = what is a good PC movie aplication/program
