How can I use button batteries in place of a 9v?

Hi Guys, ( I am prickly) I am really excited as I'm going to make my first project ever that includes resistors. I needed some help regarding (no not resistors) batteries. I need to chose which battery to use either 2 AA batteries (3 LED's in parallel) or a 9v battery (3 LED's in series). I want to choose the way in which the LED's will be brighter for longer. Thanks in advance -Prickly Potato

Well, i'm not allowed to play knex for a while, cuz i shot my 11 year old bro. Let me tell you the story: I built a cheap block trigger, with a red firing pin (sorta like the one in the picture) and shot his hand from a good distance (6 feet) and he started crying. Get This- The gun had two really stretchy elastics on it, and it couldn't even shoot across my room! I shot my hand from 0.5 feet and hardly felt it! Now my knex is taken away!

I need suggestions for letter endings that are appropriate to the tech/programming/hacker world for emails. Something like "Peace and Prototypes" but much less cheesy. Also, do these things have a name other than letter endings?

I am really bored and I have a pretty high up porch. Is there anyway I can make a parachute out of home made objects that won't cost to much and will actually work?

Hey! I was wondering if there's any clever people out there who can help me with my ambitious project. I'm doing some creative direction for an event and aim to create a telephone network within the venue. I want to put phones on tables and use the table numbers as the phone numbers... I also would like a way of recording everything thats said over the course of the night through the telephones? I have a very basic understanding of how these things work, I've made circuits before- but i am an artist, not an electrician so please be kind and explain to me like you would a child! I've got my hands on a load of old phones, so I just need to rewire them I guess? Thanks!

Ok, everybody's got one. WHat's your most embarassing moment? You know: split your pants, threw up on a friend, toilet paper stuck to your shoe, forgot to cover a hickey- that sort of thing. I'll go first. Today at church (I'm the minister for a small congregation), I forgot and left my cellphone on. "No big deal" you say? My ringtone is David Allen Coe (a VERY "In-your-face" and "offensive in a funny sort of way" country musician). I was just finishing up Sunday school, and getting ready to give my sermon. Then the phone rang, everyone could hear..... "I was drunk, the day my mom, got out of prison...". My wife quickly hung it up (but didn't turn it off). Then it rang AGAIN!! I was looking for something to crawl under. I wanted to die! The church-members all laughed (because they know my sense of humor), but I turned red as a beet. I stepped outside, and returned the call, as we were sort of at a stopping place. I figured it must be an emergency for anyone to call me in the middle of "church". It turns out the call was a church member, who's been out of town for a couple of months wanting to wish everybody well, and see if he could listen in on part of the service. Moral of the story: Get a different ringtone!!! OK, Who's next?

Hello, I recently received a USB power pack but I can't seem to charge the dumb / feature phones that I have. When I use this adapter to connect the phones they say that they are charging but even after 5 hours they seem like they didn't get a charge t all. Is the voltage difference the issue? With the USB being 5V and the phone battery being 3.7V (though the output of the chargers that the phones came with is 5V). Could I have a faulty unit? Thanks for reading.

I was looking at Noah's new Office Weapons Guide, and noticed that it included the keyword "rhs". I'm only familiar with this meaning "right hand side" (a.k.a. "rvalue" in C). But it seems like there are a large number of guides (all of them? No, all but about 20) with this keyword included. What does it mean?

I have a 10W RGB LED like this one: http://dx.com/p/10w-1000lm-rgb-light-9-led-module-silver-white-9-11v-168507 It's rated to 9-11v, so I hooked it up to a 9v battery. The LED has 4 leads: 1) +9v 2) Red - 3) Green - 4) Blue - The green and the blue work as expected, and I can combine them to get cyan. The problem is with the red: 1) It won't combine with any other color. If the red is switched on, the green and blue switch off. 2) It works on both polarities.... It turns on both with +9v and -9v. Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something? Am I going crazy? Am I just stupid!? Please help!

As some of you know, I left my job at Christmas to return full time to school to get an engineering degree, I'm kinda clever ;-), but my first full time semester was full of suck. I took Thermo, Dynamics, Solid Mech, and Chem for Eng. Chem for Eng was a joke, I never attended class and got an A. Thermo, the teacher, it was his first time, I learned from the book, got a B+ Dynamics, the teacher was a grad student, and he was incredibly passionate about teaching, great class, harder than hell, got a B. And then there is Solid Mech. The grade has been a sword of Damocles hanging over my head, I was doing so poorly that I even registered to take it again in the summer, the first test, I got a 39, and that was greater than one sigma below the mean. Well folks, I just dropped that summer class because I got a C. Yea freakin' ha!!! I never thought I'd be this excited to be average. LOL. So now I have all summer, only one class (materials) and maybe a part time job, expect to see more (low cost) instructables. Ghod, right now I feel awesome.

There have been times in the past where my instructables have been in the newsletter. Putting way too much trust in my computer and email service I never backed up these newsletters. I know, I know, dumb dumb dumb... Moving on though, I went through forums and found a spot that says archived newsletters, ah-ha! thought found it, I was wrong. Someone want to point out where to look, thanks!

When you put up an instructable with pics, do you have to leave your pics in your gallery for the life of the instructable? I.e. if I use a pic in an instructable, then delete the photo from my gallery, does it break the image on the instructable? Thanks for any info!

I can upload images, but they don't seem to store anywhere. The only time it has worked, I accidently uploaded a dumb picture as my avatar when I didn't want one. All I did was upload and suddenly, dumb avatar. I couldn't get rid of it, so uploaded another barely acceptable pic in it's place. I can't put anything in my library, or find any standard patch pictures anywhere. Is it me or my software, or a bug? Windows XP Professional V2002 Service pack 3. IE 7.

Ok, I'm kinda new, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have a Motorola Phone Charger that gives out 5V and 500mA. I want to make it a USB Charger. Will it work? (If I just connect the USB Female End and the Phone Charger directly.) Or do I need some parts or something?

We have the option to flag comments as "not nice", "inappropriate", and "spam". Can we add another flag that reads, "the site is called 'instructables', not 'gobuyables.'" for all the comments where people say, "This is dumb. I could buy that at the dollar store."

No, not a phone in a car--a phone that is a car, or at least looks like one. This car is a converted VW Beetle that is being used to promote a phone company. I think this may be even more exciting to see on the road than the sheepdog from the movie Dumb and Dumber.Link via TechEBlog

After reviewing my latest posting, I noticed that I was able to zoom and rotate the STEP files included with the graphics. Dumb question - has the STEP file viewer always been included on Instructables or is this a relatively new feature? Anyway, it's a nice feature for people that want a better understanding of the part.

Okay, so I want to build a set of two-way speakers. BUT, I'm still confused on this one part. Do I need an amp, or some kind of receiver for them to work? Or can I plug them straight into the device? Thanks for your help, sorry if this is a dumb question.

I have probably asked enough dumb questions already but I think you could do this. I have an old TV remote control. If I would split it open and disconnect the IR and solder a USB cable to it would it work on the computer? (I would have put batteries in it too.) A program would control the remote.

I want to use the 7219 to drive two 3digit 7segment displays with these specs. I want to use 1.85v and 18mA. Here's what the MAX7219 datasheet states as resistor values to be used. I'm too dumb to figure out how the resistor value is calculated. Can someone help? What would the resistor value be for 1.85v 18mA?

Hello world of the internet. I have an Arduino Uno, an ICM7218DIJI, and a ton of leds. I want to make a matrix. Preferably a 64 led matrix. I pretty much need help with all of it because I really have no experience with programming, arduino, or led drivers. The best way would be to dumb everything down. Lol,

Please help. I have 5 UNO R3 clones and I can't install them on my computer. When I plug them in two red LEDs light and the board comes up under Other Devices as a USB V2 device. I've tried every driver I can find, but none are recognized as suitable. I've tried 5 different boards, two computers Win 8.1 and Win 7. I've swapped cables and still nothing. I have a feeling it could be a lack of a bootloader on all the boards. How would I check if this is the case and how would I fix it? I have managed (easily) to install an Arduino Mega with no problems and I've managed to install many other devices so it's not a case of too dumb. Just a little dumb :-) Any help would be very much appreciated. Stu
