Yet another dumb question?

Hi Guys, ( I am prickly) I am really excited as I'm going to make my first project ever that includes resistors. I needed some help regarding (no not resistors) batteries. I need to chose which battery to use either 2 AA batteries (3 LED's in parallel)  or a 9v battery  (3 LED's in series). I want to choose the way in which the LED's will be brighter for longer. Thanks in advance -Prickly Potato

I need suggestions for letter endings that are appropriate to the tech/programming/hacker world for emails. Something like "Peace and Prototypes" but much less cheesy. Also, do these things have a name other than letter endings?

Question ratings

I didn't see a Feedback category, so if this isn't in the right place, please move it. In Q and A, the line is "Don't be shy.....ask it."  OK.  And we've all heard that there are no stupid questions, right?  But if  ibles is trying to encourage honest (non-troll) questions,  rating a question as "Worthless"  has the opposite effect.  Maybe the question has limited interest. Maybe few people view it.  Maybe fewer people answer. These are neutral characteristics, and perhaps they are criterion by which someone judges the questions.  To call a question "Worthless", however,  is a real slap down and not in keeping with the idea of  "be nice".   I see that my questions are sometimes rated "Worthless,"  and,  yeah, I feel bad when I see that. ( Maybe I'm too dumb for ibles?  Maybe I don't measure up to ible standards?  Maybe I'm not really welcome here??)  I ask  questions because I want answers, and this community  is full of helpful people who have useful experience and good ideas.   Despite the worthless  ratings,  I'm getting useful answers from the community and intend to keep asking.  If only authors can see the ratings, is the intent to berate us into asking better questions?  Constructive criticism  might be more effective.  If everyone can see the ratings, is the intent to guide readers away from "worthless" questions or to shame the authors into going away?

Dumb keyword question -- what does "rhs" stand for?

I was looking at Noah's new Office Weapons Guide, and noticed that it included the keyword "rhs". I'm only familiar with this meaning "right hand side" (a.k.a. "rvalue" in C). But it seems like there are a large number of guides (all of them? No, all but about 20) with this keyword included. What does it mean?

Noobariffic LED art question (Batteries)

Uhh, hi everyone. I have a super basic question, and I'm going to appeal for help because I'm running low on time for this project. I have a signpost I want to light up with about 100 3volt LEDs. What kind of power source should I be looking at? Would 4 AA batteries suffice? I've seen online calculators for determining resistors, but not for an ideal power source. Do I just wire up as many batteries as I want and get the proper resistors? I'd like this thing to light for at least eight hours on a full charge, so I can swap batteries daily. Thank you in advance! I'm dumb!

Homemade Electric furnace current question

Good day viewers! I recently found out about the wonders of electric furnaces, cheap to run and no smoke. I went looking around for some designs, there are some nice i'bles about it and I got very exited since my neighbours already start nagging when I strike a match, an electric furnace would be the perfect solution. I decided to go with kanthal wire, its relatively cheap at a few bucks per meter, and it can handle temperatures up to  1300C. I plan to melt alluminium and maybe some brass so I should be fine with that. now to the questions part, I have an ATX PSU with a 12V 16A output (DC), I was wondering how many (centi)meters or inches for the americans under us, it could power (if I can power it it would eventually go up to full temp right?) I am a complete nitwit at these Ohms formulas and electric furnaces, at the moment I am abstaining from sleep to build this furnace and I am sure that others are as well. I hope some nice fellow diyers can help me with it. This could be a dumb questions, maybe I need a wall outlet (230V in my place) or maybe I need some rocket science. I don't know, do you? kind regards and a thank in advance from 2 young exploramenters that want to melt some metal without ruining our lungs. excuse us for spelling mistakes, this written by non-native speakers and with shaking hands,...

Ingenuity in the cannabis community

This is an inquiry aimed at the moderators and staff of the site specifically, but should also involve the community. I live in Northern California, which is one of the world centers of marijuana use and culture. My entire life I have been exposed to users of the drug, and it is a drug, although a largely harmless one in comparison to other legal drugs (and let's not make this a debate, please. it's not the issue at hand, argue about that in other places PLEASE). I would also like to add that I do not, never have, and will most likely never smoke marijuana unless I develop a medical condition for which it is prescribed. Being a maker, I have noticed the large amount of art, ingenuity, and design that goes into the smoking devices that these people use. This creativity and design is something that I feel should be shared on this site. Marijuana is a drug that is legal in many places, either freely available or medicinally, or in a legal gray area. In fact, it seems much more legal, and arguably safer than a portion of the projects on this website. From the perspective of someone who does dumb things safely, I have seen some stuff on here that is terrifying at worst, and dumb at best. That said, it's all usually creative, and awesome, and is by no means representative of the vast majority of content on this site. tl;dr: marijuana apparatus can be very creative and artistic, values supported by this site it is legal in various areas and a lot safer than some things I have seen on here The actual question: What is the official position of the mods/staff/community on posting content including or related to marijuana smoking apparatus? I have made many different kinds of smoking things for my friends, and it is a much more in depth and scientific process than one would imagine. If it's okay, I would like to share some of these creations. also, that's not my picture, just an example of an intricate bong.

Wifi Antenna Questions From A Mac User

Hi. I just recently got a new Mac and my job requires me to travel a bit. They won't pay for a antenna, and I don't really have the money to buy one...so, I need to build one, *shrugs. Basically, what I want is everything for nothing, *grins. I want the smallest, fastest, sleekest, most powerful antenna I can get...for as little as I can get it for. That said, here's what I'm dealing with: ***13-inch MacBook; 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo & all the wifi business is internal ('Airport')*** I'm a bit unknowledgable with Mac so far, so try to dumb down the responses for me, *grins. I've been told that because everything is internal regarding wifi, that I would have to drill or cut into the case to make any sort of antenna for it...but I'm reeeeeallly hoping this isn't true. Shouldn't I be able to still do something a bit easier involving the USB ports? If so, what's a good cheap one to buy? Will it work with an Intel based Mac (seems that comes up alot with everything) ? I've seen the antennas online that talk about receiving signal from x amount of miles, rather than just x amount of feet...how do I accomplish the same distances? What's the best for achieving a balance between power, ease, and portability (i.e. being tossed in and out of a backpack a few times a day) ? I would guess some sort of mesh parabolic like the strainers I've seen used, but I'll leave that up to you guys since you seem to have a better grip on these things than me. Thanx in advance for your help on this one, & I'll be sure to letcha know how your suggestions go! :)

I just learnt that light consists of electric and magnetic fields oscillating at right angles to each other . Now my question is that why can't the electric and magnetic components of light interact with matter. For example why does not the magnetic component in light interact with a external magnetic field and bend toward or away from it. How can i power this unidentifiable motor? Answered

I have a motor that has no markings on it outside except for the letters DMEGC, which I understand to be a Chinese company that produces motor housings among other things. I think that it came off of an electric scooter, but I'm not even sure about that. The person who gave it to me only knew that it was a DC motor from somwhere. It's about three inches deep and the diameter is probably about 4".  It has two wires coming out of it. My question is: What should I use to power this thing? I don't want to waste a bunch of money on it. How risky is it to just test out AC-DC adapters on it? I've got a plug here I wouldn't mind wasting if it will work that outputs 12VDC 500mA. Sorry, I'm a real beginner with electronics and I'm probably asking really dumb questions, but if someone could help me out, I'd be really grateful.

Hard drive enclosure to turn internal into external?

Hello all, I have what may be a dumb question - so hopefully it will be an easy one to answer! I have a couple old hard drives from old computers that I want to put into a case/enclosure to repurpose into an extra external hard drive. When I take exact measurements of the hard drives they are: 4" x 5 3/4' x 1 (W x L x D). I've been looking around for enclosure kits but I don't see any that are 4" in width. I see a lot of 3.5" and not many others besides smaller 2.5" casings. So my possibly stupid question is: Do I want the 3.5" enclosure for my hard drive? Has anyone tried/been able to get a quadcopter flying using an Arduino paired with an Adafruit motor shield?

The motor shield can be found here. Its probably a dumb question as the L293D drivers can only provide 0.6A max current per motor and most of the brushless DC motors I've seen used seem to require more current.  Perhaps I'm mistaken.  Also, I've read that one can piggyback the L293Ds to get more current.  Would this be a possible solution if a single chip can't provide enough current for the job? Perhaps using conventional ESCs that can provide higher current are the only way to go?  I'm very new to tinkering with Arduinos/motors/electronics in general so any suggestions would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Circuit board assistance for a beginner (corded phone hack)?

I'm attempting to hack an old corded phone into a two button device in a smaller enclosure. Reason being my apartment uses landline phones to buzz people into the building, and I wanted to see if I could DIY a fun alternative. As it stands the functionality of two buttons is needed - speaker to answer/hang up, and the 9 key to buzz in - but the board itself is larger than the enclosure I had wanted to put it in. Is there a way to get around this? Would it be a matter of having to trace the circuits and physically break off pieces of the board that aren't relevant (keys 1-8, etc), or do I have it all wrong?  Pictured below is the board and the two buttons in question. EDIT: I accidentally circled the key below the 9 key - I'm aware of this mistake. I am a total newbie when it comes to this stuff so if this is a dumb question I apologize in advance. Additionally, if anyone has alternative solutions or suggestions for this issue I would love to hear them. Thanks!

Square Wave Generator (For Resonant Air-Gap Transformer)

I've decided on a project for the new year that is ~~less likely to lead to sterilization~~ better than my old project (which was a homebrew x-ray machine). My new project is something to wirelessly power some LEDs. I've done some research (read as, YES NACHO, I ALREADY GOOGLED IT!) and looked at puffin's unfinished instructable on IPT (it helped a lot). What I've found out is that to start, I will need something to generate a square wave AC signal. The circuit I decided on is a 555 multivibrator. One of my friends let me copy the schematic from his notebook. I've got a couple of questions still (and I hoped you guys could help). 1st. (Dumb Question) That symbol in the second picture is ground, right? 2nd. Once I build the multivibrator, how would I hook it up with the rest of the circuitry for my air gap transformer? (ie. where would the outputs on the circuit be?) 3rd. What does that symbol (it looks like it should just be a resistor symbol), next to the words speaker or other circuit mean? Is it just a resistor or is it actually the outputs I've been looking for? 4th. Is there anyone who has successfully done a project like this before (recently)? Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you change laser diode for LED to produce white light?

Hi All,I have an existing circuit that I'm removing from a donor device that currently uses a class 3R / 5mw laser diode running off of two 357 batteries (1.55v, I believe). The functionality of this module is ideal for my application (has an on/off button positioned exactly where I would like it), but I want to repurpose it to produce white light, not a focused laser beam. I know next to nothing about circuitry, so pardon me in advance if this is either a dumb question or just not feasible: Is it possible to just de-solder the 5mw laser diode and replace it with a white LED, and if so, what specs do I require for the LED? The existing circuit is tiny, so just making a new module is beyond anything I could do, despite simple LED circuits being relatively easy to put together. Thanks in advance to any answer I might get.

A Discussion and Breakdown of Opinions and Controversy Within The Community

So I had this dumb idea that a few of us "KI"ers, as you call us, could have a fruitful and interesting discussion based on several topics through an audio AMA-type format.  The idea is that you guys post a bunch of questions below, and we answer and elaborate as we see fit after a week or so, putting all the discussion in a nice, short 30-ish minute podcast.  If you're interested in hearing us talk about whatever, whether it be our taste in mechanics, or what happened with KI, or even how you guys feel about us, let us know below and we'll see how this goes.  Again, I aim to approach this with a semi-serious and thoughtful tone, so it's not just going to be 30 minutes of us saying "lol those ibles guys are so silly" and such nonsense. I don't expect much to come out of this, but if we have some fun or start a fluid conversation, it'll be worth it.

When a load is rated at 12 volts and hooked up to a 12 volt battery, does it consume all 12 volts?

This may seem like a very dumb question but I took electronics two years ago as a high schooler and cannot seem to remember much about it. So I have a circuit that has a bilge pump hooked up in series with a 12 volt battery. The bilge pump says 12 volts, I know that that means it must have a 12 volt supply, but if I hooked it up with a 12 volt battery, would there be any left over volts to say, power a small light? Deleting comments on your own instructable. Good or bad?

I met one of our contributors at Maker Faire in Austin and he had a concern about people posting comments on his own instructable. He wanted to be able to delete comments that he thought were off-topic or rude.We have a flagging system and we do check the flags as often as we can, but there are a lot of comments out there and as Instructables continues to grow it gets harder to keep up.So the question is whether or not we implement our own comment deleting system that some other sites, such as youtube, employ. Is this a good idea or not? Here's how I see it break down:Pros: Dumb or off-topic comments are spotted earlier by users since they get notified of comments on their own instructable. If I increase voltage input on audio amp, will the volume be able to get louder?

I'm planning on building a portable speaker/boombox and I was looking up some build videos and saw people having a voltmeter built into their speakers and when they increased the volume, voltage started dropping. The audio amplifier I was planning on buying stated that it can handle DC power 8-25v. So my question is, when I increase the voltage input, will the output volume be louder or what will it change, or does the volume rely on the speakers I'm using? Or will the volume rely on the batteries I'm using? Making Shulk's Monado

Hey all,         Thank you for checking out my question. My oldest son wants to be Shulk from Super Smash Bros Wii U this year for Halloween and I am trying to figure out how to make the sword for the character. Its called the Monado. Its huge and it has 5 different symbols that each light up a different color in the clear circle part of the sword. I'm thinking of fabricating it from foam like others have done with fabricated weapons on here. I need to figure out what I can use for the clear circle part. The cheapest option. And how to make it light up and be able to change the lights and have the lights coordinate with the symbols. I'm thinking RGBs and an Arduino Uno could do the job. If I had a matrix of them and code to light them up in the pattern of the symbol in the correct color. Im wondering id this is the cheapest and best solution to the problem and if it will work. And if so, I'm not really sure how to make my own matrix and I'm having trouble finding an instructable that dumbs it down enough for me. Then I need help with the code for it, or to be pushed in the right direction with some started code and a working understanding. The sword is supposed to open and a blade extend but I am not planning on making that part work. Thank you for any help or suggestions you may have. I am having trouble with the uploader to add photos.
